IN MEMORIUM - OUR FRIEND, YSIDRO R. BARRON

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of long-time Las Vegas Architect Ysidro R. Barron on December 15th, 2022. Ysidro was born in Tucson, AZ. in 1953. After graduating from Tucson High School, Ysidro attended Yale University and graduated with a degree in Architecture.

Ysidro moved to Las Vegas in 1981 to begin his career in architecture which he continued till his passing. He built his own architectural practice focusing on and contributing to the built environment by way of schools, public housing, civic and hospitality projects. He is remembered by those in his industry as a hands on mentor who led by example.

Ysidro accomplished many things and was always very proud of his family. Those who knew him will remember him as a fun-loving person who enjoyed entertaining friends at the bar he built in his home and rooting for the Green Bay Packers. He was also an avid athlete who loved playing squash and golfing at the Black Mountain Golf Course.

A celebration of life was held on January 17th. He is survived by his wife Ann, his brothers Ron and Alex, his daughters Amalia Kindel Ranck (Steve) and Amanda Katherine Barron.

Aia Las Vegas Educational Outreach Committee

John O. Torpey, AIA Chair

The Committee was busy with several activities at the end of the 2022 year.

Our Committee participated in the Community Night at Lied STEM Academy on November 3, 2002. I would like to recognize and thank Mili Turnbull, AIA for attending this event with me. It was a chance to interact with students and their parents.

Our Committee is also participating in a weekly class visit to Mr. Gavin Romzek’s Architecture and Construction class at Lied STEM Academy. This class allows us to have one on one contact with students and the opportunity to introduce design concepts to his students and discuss their ideas. This weekly activity started on November 7, 2022 and will continue into 2023.

The career fair on November 15, 2022 at Eldorado High School was well attended. I want to give a big thank you to those Committee members who helped make this event a success. Thank you, Stacey Hatfield (NSBAID), Christian Nelson AIA, Rick Van Diepen AIA, Ivan-Gonzalez-Vazquez (AIAS) and Nathaniel Becenti (AIAS).

This year looks promising for additional opportunities to meet with students as well. The Committee has been asked to attend two more High School Career Fairs for March 3 and March 9, and a speaking engagement scheduled at Lied STEM Academy in February.

If you are currently not a member of the AIA Education Outreach Committee and would like the opportunity to participate please contact me via e-mail: johntorpeyaia@gmail.com or my cell number 702 580-5903.

Liora’s ideal world lies at the intersection of design, business, and strategy. She connects the dots at OBMI – designing and facilitating our interactive workshops with clients and partners, managing staff, clearing roadblocks, and ensuring projects move forward on time and on budget. Liora’s influence keeps OBMI striving for excellence, a value she communicates in five different languages: English, Spanish, German, Hebrew, and French.

As the joint head of the OBMI Destination Creation studio, Liora oversees the professional staff in Miami and coordinates with the firm’s worldwide offices. Her vast international expertise in urban design and planning stems from a keen interest in the cities, cultures, and environments affected by architecture. Liora began her professional career in Chile, where she ran her own practice and directed landmark projects for public and private clients. In Miami, Liora launched a strategic business development consultancy for design, urban planning, and tourism that bridged Latin American and U.S. markets. She joined OBMI in 2006.

Liora holds a professional degree in architecture from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a Master of Science in Architecture with a focus on urban design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a Chilean Registered Architect, an international associate of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Outside of the office, Liora practices 5Rhythms and teaches Iyengar yoga as a licensed instructor. She’s also an ex-competitive skier and an active publisher.

There will be two more Klai Juba Wald Lectures this spring. Plans and dates are being finalized and will be announced as soon as they are confirmed. Please remember that Klai Juba Wald Lectures qualify to self-reporting to AIA National for CE Credits.

This fuzzy math reminds me of the two engineers who argued over which of them was the smartest. One tells the other, "You don't know anything--I know at least twice as much as you!"

CUNHINGHAM'S SUKREET SINGH KNOWS THE WHATS, WHYS AND HOWS OF NET ZERO

Not so long ago, the concept of designing to net zero, whether energy, water, waste or carbon emissions, seemed beyond reach.

Then came the obvious weather extremes, many of which could be attributable to climate change. Now, the race is on to do something about it. In response, net zero has evolved from an abstract concept to encompassing strategies used by government and businesses to help tackle the causes of increasing climate-change risks.

But what is net zero? It can be many things including net zero energy, net zero water, net zero waste, etc. But, in this context, and probably the most holistic and metric that encompasses everything is net zero carbon. It is a state in which greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere are balanced by their removal from that same atmosphere.

This is the theory. CLICK HERE to read the rest of the article Join
