MESS GE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It has been an honor to be AIA Indianapolis’ 2021 president, a role once held by so many of my mentors and talented architects that I’ve long admired. Following the lockdown of 2020, it seemed appropriate to theme the year “Arise!” as we collectively rose from quarantine to reconnect with each other and our communities. Even though the quarantine dragged further into the year than anyone anticipated, we did reconnect. We got back together at annual favorite events like the golf outing and the day at the track. I delighted in seeing your collective, stumped expressions in person as I played trivia master at the Indiana Architecture Foundation Trivia Night Fundraiser. I was equally grateful to reconnect with our built environment with tours of the Mills House, North Mass Boulder and the Community Justice Center. If you are like me, you were challenged by Olon Dotson as he shared the history of Indiana Avenue and information about proposed new developments. I didn’t imagine “Arise!” simply as a reaction to COVID. It was a call to action. As an industry, we must do a better job of educating the public about the power of design. We can’t expect the public to demand more from the built environment if they don’t understand why design matters. “Arise!” was an encouragement to stand up from the drafting board to engage and educate the public. This passion for education has been a continuous undercurrent throughout my career. It’s motivated my career choices and my long-term involvement in the Young Architect’s Forum, the Indiana High School Architectural Design Competition and architecture summer camp. There are innumerable ways we can all contribute, and every effort helps advance our cause. I encourage you all to chip in, regardless of the scale. My friend and mentor Lynn Molzan, FAIA, was a tremendous example of how architects can make a difference in our community. When Lynn passed away in 2020, we created AIA Indy’s first-ever documentary. It is a tribute to Lynn, but it is also a story of the difference architects can make through the power of design. It’s free and accessible to everyone through AIA Indiana’s YouTube channel. I encourage you to share it widely.
A
I hope this is the first of many documentaries we create to capture important stories of architects making a difference. It’s one way we can help further AIA’s mission of creating more valuable, healthy, secure and sustainable buildings, neighborhoods and communities.
Brandon Farley, AIA 2021 President / AIA Indianapolis

LIFTING UP ARCHITECTS ONE MONTH AT TIME
FEB
JANUARY “What’s Up Remote: How the Components of an Effective Workplace Fare in a Post-Pandemic World.” Sam Julka, founder of workplace research firm Doris Research, presented research on components of the workplace: collaboration, creativity, innovation, strategy, and productivity; focusing specifically on what each would look like in a post-COVID 19 world. FEBRUARY “Why Indiana Avenue Matters.” Olon Dotson, associate professor of architecture at Ball State University shared how Indiana Avenue was once the hub of Black life and culture, with churches, restaurants and entertainment venues. He has an alternative vision to the proposed multi-story development planned near Madam Walker Legacy Center, which he says should include increased focus on neighborhood engagement and connectivity, including additional retail and community space. “With respect to historic preservation from an African American perspective, we must look beyond the elements featured in the Euro-centered revival, colonial and hegemonic structures that surround us,” he says. “As we are witnessing the erasure of the remains of Black communities constructed under said systems, we must have the capacity to discover our creative and collective determination to persevere that is reflected in places and spaces throughout our state and our nation.” MARCH If you want to grow your business, you need to focus on your mindset, behaviors, and language, according to Indianapolis business coach Brooke Crosely, who provided insights on growing your business. APRIL It takes more than bean bag chairs, bright colors and quirky spaces to inspire employees, especially in an at-home work environment. Britain’s foremost environmental psychologist, Dr. Nigel Oseland, talked about understanding the various ways people find inspiration for work, and it’s not all indoors. MAY It was not your typical May in Indianapolis thanks to the pandemic, but the annual trek to the track continued to be one of the most popular annual programs on the AIA Indy docket.

SEPTEMBER While the pandemic forced the cancellation of the popular Architects’ Home Tour, the fall focus was still devoted to residential design. ONE 10 Studio, Demerly Architects, Matt Black Design Studios and RGCollaborative talked about projects they are working on and hopefully will one day be able to showcase during a home tour. OCTOBER Max Yoder, the author of “Do Better Work,” and CEO of Lessonly in Indianapolis, shared how better work leads to better lives.
JUNE There is no more going back to a normal work situation. Not after nearly two years of work-from-home and hybrid offices. Evelyn Lee, FAIA, founder of Practice Architecture in California helped shed light on how to adapt to build and operate a successful design practice. One way to do that is to give employees control over their workday, which results in better planning for the whole company.
NOVEMBER There’s nothing better than a story about a good transformation, and architects got to see how Blackline transformed an old box factory into a bouldering gym, yoga studio and fitness center called North Mass Boulder (see page 8). DECEMBER Spohn hosted AIA Indy for its annual holiday party, which included voting on the 2022 board of directors, bourbon tasting and a presentation from Longboard Products Business Development about using aluminum extrusions to create sustainable facades.
After being on the Indiana Landmarks’ most endangered list in 2014, the 1956 glass and fieldstone house inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright is capturing new attention after a yearlong renovation. AIA Indy toured the iconic Mills House, which was originally designed by Indianapolis architect Harry Cooler, who studied under Wright at the University of Illinois. Greenwood business owner Todd Anthony bought the house and then hired Cooler’s son, Bill Cooler, AIA, to perform the renovation. It’s now the Harry Cooler Conference Center and is one of the most iconic designs in Greenwood.
AUGUST AIA Indy architects were among the first to be able to tour the 12-story Criminal Justice Center, built on the former site of the Citizens Energy coke plant. Schmidt

JULY Architect and professor Juan Miró, FAIA, has built an international reputation by shaping private and public spaces that connect with nature and define a unique sense of place. He spoke to AIA Indy about his work and how architecture can connect people to the landscape, changing perceptions of density in cities, how cities relate to nature, how public and private spaces shape people and the common threads that connect very diverse people in cities.

SERVICE AWARDS
KENNEDY AND BOWEN HONORED WITH GOLD MEDAL AWARD Indianapolis residents and visitors who like to dine out downtown, go to live theater or sporting events or hike and boat at Eagle Creek have an architect to thank. Robert F. Kennedy, FAIA, has received the Gold Medal Award from the American Institute of Architects Indiana for his role in in helping Indianapolis become a thriving city. Kennedy spent several years advocating for downtown as director of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development beginning in 1976. It was a time when there was nothing to do downtown, and not a soul to be found after 5 p.m., and when he told friends he was buying a house downtown, people were aghast at the thought. Architects have David Bowen, FAIA, to thank for helping build and grow the architecture profession through his leadership on local, state and national AIA committees, boards and task forces. He’s been an advocate for great design as both a business leader and community leader. A native of Indianapolis, Bowen went to University of Cincinnati but migrated back to Indianapolis where he spent most of his career managing design teams and projects at Odle McQuire and Shook. Bowen also received the Gold Medal Award for his commitment to the profession and community during the AIA Indiana convention this month. INDY DESIGNERS WORK FOR STRONGER COMMUNITIES Gary Vance, FAIA, a nationally recognized healthcare architect and founding member of the American College of Healthcare Architects, received The Edward

Ask a group of architects to come up with the most significant postwar architecture in Indianapolis, and you’ll get a long list. Ask them to pare it down to ten, and you’ve got a debate on your hands. AIA Indianapolis came up with a list of the most significant architecture in Indianapolis since World War II.

D. Pierre Award. Throughout Vance’s 40-year design career, he has sought innovative strategies to improve patient experiences and healthcare performances through facility planning and design. With a passion for preservation, Scott Pannicke, AIA, helped establish and update policies and procedures for the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, and he works to preserve and improve historic buildings, such as the new Bottleworks District, Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Pannicke is associate principal, historic preservation specialist, technical expert and specifications manager at RATIO. For all his work, he received The Juliet Peddle Award. YOUNG ARCHITECT AWARD Architects Joe Yount, AIA, of RATIO, and Matt Jennings, AIA, of American Structurepoint, both received the Tony Costello Young Architect Award. Joe Yount received the award for his work to get Indiana’s building codes updated, advocacy for equity and diversity within the design and building industry and mentoring of high school students.

Matt Jennings is an ambassador for building more inclusive, collaborative and engaging design processes. Utilizing technology, design expertise and client engagement skills, Matt invites clients to participate in real time, interactive working sessions. Matt also takes an active role mentoring interns, participating in Ball State student juries, and engaging with young professionals through the Young Architect’s Forum.
“It is arguably visually the biggest anchor at least in the northwest quadrant if not the north-most part of Indianapolis,” said Jason Larrison, AIA Indy Board secretary. “You know it’s unique, it’s easy to identify. If you are in any building downtown looking north, the Pyramids reflect. It’s easy to find.”

It’s definitely a more interesting, more thoughtful take on an urban office building,” Farley said. “They (designers) preserved the urban edge, made some interesting site choices, and daylighting was a big driving factor. It’s really a nice building.”

COSTELLO RECEIVES AWARDS FOR WORK IN HAITI When Anthony Costello, FAIA, watched the devastation of homes and buildings collapse after an earthquake in Haiti, he wanted to understand why. So he traveled to the country to learn about its building practices. He’s now been to Haiti more than 26 times to learn and then to help develop methods to make buildings stronger and also to design Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage Village Campus in Plaine de Nord. It’s been a work of passion for the Muncie architect and Ball State University architecture professor, who worked alongside his students to make the orphanage and safer building practices a reality. For all of his work, AIA Indiana presented Costello with the first-ever Humanitarian Award. He also received the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb. The Distinguished Hoosier Award recognizes those whose distinguish themselves through significant contributions to their communities and whose qualities and characteristics reflect the best of the great State of Indiana and whose actions endear them in the hearts and minds of all Hoosiers. THREE INDY FIRMS WIN AIA INDIANA DESIGN AWARDS Architects get inspiration from all different kinds of things, even roundabouts. RATIO received an Honor Award for its design of Wabash Valley Power’s 60,000-square-foot headquarters in InTech Park on Indy’s northwest side. Its curved form mimics the nearby roundabout. See pages 22-23. One 10 Studio received a Citation Award in new construction for its design of a home it called Papillon. Designers created a serene retreat in the middle of a busy suburban area, which has a butterfly habitat and a vegetated roof system among other sustainable features. See pages 24-25. Blackline received a Merit Award in Interior Architecture for transforming a former box factory into a rock-climbing facility and fitness center called North Mass Boulder. See page 19. The jury said, “This project respected the industrial structural bones of the original building and embraced the insertion of the artful boulder forms within the volume. There was a strong utilization of the existing footprint to organize the various programs of bouldering, fitness and socialization. In addition, there was a commitment of bringing art and color to the space in large murals and colorful bouldering shapes.”

HONOR
Wabash Valley Power / “The site planning is clear, smart, and takes advantage of the frontage to the trees/woods, working on sustainable ways for water detention and reforestation. The curve shape of the building is attractive, adjusting to the natural surroundings. The interior is restrained and elegant, with few materials, few colors and the beautiful circulation along the curve allow all users to connect to nature.
22
23
CITATION
Papillon House / “The architect made an effort to open the house to the backyard and nature with the L-shape plan. Materials are extended from the interior to the exterior with the effect of bringing the exterior green inside reinforced by including roof gardens. They were able to bring light to many spaces including the lower level with large glass windows and light shafts.”
