On behalf of the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 44th Annual Western North Carolina Parade of Homes.
This year’s Parade showcases the incredible craftsmanship, creativity, and dedication of our region’s builders, architects, designers, and trade partners. From modern mountain retreats to timeless family homes, the Parade offers a diverse range of styles and communities — each reflecting the unique character of Western North Carolina.
As we mark one year since Hurricane Helene, this Parade also reflects the strength and resilience of our community. Over the past year, our members and partners have not only built beautiful homes but have also rolled up their sleeves to rebuild lives and neighborhoods impacted by the storm. The 44th Annual Parade is both a celebration of design and craftsmanship and a testament to the perseverance and generosity that define Western North Carolina.

• Altamont Construction Forged by a Young Builder with Big Dreams •
Dylan Whitley grew up in Candler, hauling tools and turning wrenches for his dad’s plumbing company, Whitley Plumbing. While most kids his age were mowing lawns or bagging groceries, he was logging hundreds of hours on jobsites and laying the foundation for his own company.
“By the time I was 19, I knew I wanted to be a builder — not just someone who worked on homes, but someone who led the entire process from the ground up,” Whitley said.
At just 23, Whitley turned that ambition into action. After a brief stint in an office job, he stepped away from the desk and launched Altamont Construction.
“Altamont Construction came to life through a lot of hustle and a desire to build differently,” he said. “From day one, the focus has been on communication, transparency, and collaboration. We don’t overcomplicate it: We treat people well, keep the process clear, and build homes we’re proud to put our name on.”
His approach has paid off. Today, nearly a decade later, Altamont has evolved from scrappy beginnings into a sought-after builder of custom homes. The firm
focuses primarily on Buncombe County, with projects extending into neighboring Henderson and Transylvania counties — generally within an hour’s drive of Asheville.
For Whitley, working close to home is part of the appeal. “As a lifelong Ashevillian, building here means more than just business. It’s personal,” he said. “We know the land, the neighborhoods, and the way things move around here, and we build with that in mind.”
That connection to place is on full display in this year’s Parade of Homes entry, Highland Ridge Farm. Inspired by the French countryside, the Weaverville estate features limestone, hand-detailed finishes, and timeless design choices. “We’re incredibly proud of how it turned out and how well it reflects our brand,” Whitley said.
As Altamont looks ahead, Whitley is determined to keep raising the bar. “We’re continuing to grow and build across Asheville, taking on new projects that reflect our values and commitment to quality,” he said.

This historic district home required a delicate balance of modern functionality and character preservation for a busy family of doctors and their young children. The kitchen was completely re-imagined with sleek paneled appliances that seamlessly integrate with custom cabinetry, maintaining the home's historic charm while delivering contemporary convenience, plus a cleverly concealed pantry that maximizes storage. The powder room renovation embraces boldness with classy, timeless finishes, while we also transformed the welcoming foyer and updated an additional bathroom. Every design decision honored the home's historic significance while creating functional spaces for modern family life.
In 2023, the Asheville-Buncombe Community Land Trust (ABCLT) purchased this home on Fayetteville Street in the Burton Street neighborhood, where entrepreneur Edward Walton Pearson developed a thriving African-American community before the destruction caused by urban renewal. Built in 1927, it is one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood. ABCLT addressed structural issues, replaced the roofing, rebuilt the rear porch, updated the kitchen, and painted the interior of the home. The rehabilitation unearthed the history of the Burton Street community, including a neighborhood barber shop. The rehabilitation of the property was completed in 2025 and ABCLT will sell this home below $200,000 – less than half of market value. Through a partnership with PSABC, this home will be permanently affordable!

The bathroom also includes a double vanity with ample counter space and storage, along with a separate toilet closet for privacy. Thoughtful design, luxurious finishes, and an immersive connection to nature make this bathroom an elegant and tranquil haven within the home. Whether enjoying a morning soak or an evening steam, the views and ambiance elevate everyday routines into moments of relaxation.

This home was deemed a total loss after multiple tree strikes during Hurricane Helene. Fortunately, the foundation remained sound, reducing rebuilding costs. With the structure taken down to the foundation walls, our team collaborated with the owners to reimagine the space and adjust the floor plan. Walls between the kitchen and living area were removed, and the ceiling was vaulted to create a bright, open layout. The primary bath was completely redesigned with modern finishes, while the original kitchen cabinets were refurbished and reinstalled. The home now features energy-efficient windows and a tighter thermal envelope. Outside, vinyl siding was replaced with board-and-batten, giving the home a fresh, modern farmhouse look.

East End Revitalization
Full Home Rehabilitation • Project Cost: CUSTOM
In 2022, the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County (PSABC) purchased this home on Grail Street in the East End/Valley Street neighborhood, a historic African-American community in Asheville. Built in 1910, it is the oldest home on the block and has an amazing front porch. However, at the time of purchase, there were foundation issues, deteriorated framing, worn out aluminum siding and existing windows. Saving it from demolition, PSABC recruited volunteers who spent hundreds of hours preparing the home for renovation. Contractor John Olup took on a full rehabilitation, which was completed in the summer of 2025. PSABC will sell the home to ABCLT, who will sell it for below $250,000 – less than half the market value. Through this partnership, this home, along with other properties in the neighborhood, will be permanently preserved and permanently affordable!
Jake's Rock Retreat

This ambitious three-level transformation completely reimagines a family home, maximizing every square foot for exceptional value. The primary suite transformation represents luxury at its finest, annexing the adjacent guest bathroom creating a spa-like retreat with walk-in closet and wet room featuring a striking 550-pound concrete soaking tub. New hardwood flooring spans the top levels, while all three received energy-efficient windows, doors, updated

deck work and thoughtful landscaping, completing this comprehensive renovation.
Cane Break Cabin
From foundation to finish, this renovation is a seamless transformation that honors rustic charm while embracing modern performance. What was once a dated cabin is now a cohesive, custom retreat where every detail tells a story of craftsmanship, vision, and precision. The original millwork and trim were carefully restored or recreated, preserving the character that made the home unique. In a remarkable feat of engineering, the house was lifted 38.5 inches to create additional livable space without altering the footprint. The transformed lower level now features two welcoming guest suites and a recreation area, expanding functionality while maintaining intimacy. Fully upgraded systems—including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and windows—ensure comfort, efficiency, and durability for decades to come.
