THE RENDERING (H x W x D =) At the invitation of the FRONT Triennial, Barbara Bloom has created a work specifically for the Ellen Johnson Gallery. This space was designed by the architect Robert Venturi in the 1970s. Far from a neutral white cube, the gallery is a complex space that screams “Architecture” with a capital A. Rather than ignore the gallery’s eccentricities, Bloom has chosen to accentuate them. Bloom has carefully curated and placed a selection of works from the collection of the Allen Memorial Art Museum, all of which depict architecture in some form. The artworks featured here include paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs from a wide range of cultures and time periods. They are shown using a variety of display devices that allow the viewer to navigate the space architecturally, and to experience these works as though they are willing themselves off of the two-dimensional plane and into the third dimension. This process of reverse-rendering highlights and heightens their architectural essences, and further directs attention back to the space of the gallery itself.

All works listed are in the collection of the Allen Memorial Art Museum. All works on paper, except the photographs, are exhibition copies.

Eleven Cultural Exercises

An American City

An American City: Eleven Cultural Exercises is the first iteration of FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art, a multi-venue exhibition that takes form as a fluid critical system across Cleveland, Akron, and Oberlin. Responding to the histories of these communities as well as to their dynamic present-day social fabric, each of the more than 115 national, international, and local participating artists brings a distinctive perspective to the conditions shaping the American city today. In keeping with FRONT’s spirit of experimentation, collaboration, and partnership, the exhibition weaves through neighborhoods and communities as readily as it populates civic institutions and landmarks. Civil servants, public administrators, and community leaders have worked alongside educators, scholars, curators, and artists to make this presentation possible. The resulting exhibition spans place and time. From city to city, museum to hospital, library to school, public market to steamship, art gallery to backyard, the installations, performances, projects, and cultural exercises comprised in this inaugural edition of FRONT engage in the local, the popular, and the obscure, shifting between city past, city present, and city future. With its varied, diverse, and decentered organizational structure, An American City challenges cultural hierarchies and encourages active viewer participation and interpretation. Likewise, its many artworks and cultural exercises reconstruct, reinterpret, and at times upend urban lore, its codes, and its histories. Ultimately, the exhibition does not promote a single, closed reading of what the American City means today, instead celebrating its enduring role as a focal point of our cultural imagination.
