LAMMA 2024: FRONTIER TO DEMONSTRTE FORWARD-THINKING SOLUTIONS Forward thinking solutions that build farm resilience and boost business performance

W

ith increasing expectations placed on the agricultural industry to deliver both economically and environmentally, experts from Frontier Agriculture will be at LAMMA 2024 to link farmers with new opportunities and services designed to help future-proof farm businesses. “Farmers have a lot to think about at the moment and for many it will feel quite overwhelming,” says Frontier head of commercial, Russell Dean. “There’s so much to consider when it comes to forward planning.” Significant changes to the UK’s farming schemes, most notably the Sustainable Farming Incentive, were recently announced by Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Barclay, at the Oxford Farming Conference. In his address he said the updated policy aimed to “bring a clearer focus on enabling food production in our environmental land management schemes, because food production can and should go hand in hand with preserving the diversity and abundance of nature.” The SFI now comprises several new actions alongside increased payments and, while the news was

4

welcomed, for many farmers the challenge of knowing how to make the most of the scheme will be even greater. Russell continues: “LAMMA is primarily a show for agricultural innovation and technology, so it’s a great platform for sharing the services we have to help growers make evidence-based decisions when implementing more sustainable farming practices. “Our sustainability specialists will be on hand to discuss what the new SFI options could mean for business planning and wider crop production and land management strategies. They’ll also be joined by advisors from our Kings and SOYL divisions, as well as leading technical, agronomy, trading and digital experts who can demonstrate the tools we have available to help.” "It’s a great platform for sharing the services we have to help growers make evidence-based decisions when implementing more sustainable farming practices." Alongside SFI advice, visitors to the Frontier stand can also hear variable rate technology recommendations to optimise inputs, discover how to benchmark farm business

performance through tools such as MyFarm Analytics and find out how to use mapping technology to record environmental assets on farm. Frontier’s closed transfer system to feature at LAMMA Live At this year’s show, Frontier’s crop production technical lead, Dr Paul Fogg, and closed transfer specialist, Nick Badger, will also take to the floor at LAMMA Live to discuss the technology and benefits behind the business’ closed transfer system (CTS). Developed in collaboration with Richard Garnett of Wisdom Systems – who will also join Paul and Nick for the demonstration - the equipment makes sprayer applications safer while ensuring crop protection products are used in a more sustainable way. An example of innovation developed by Frontier as part of the business’ wider sustainability strategy, ‘The Responsible Choice’, the closed transfer system protects the environment and operators from exposure, optimises operations and reduces the use of plastic on farm. “Alongside Richard Garnett of Wisdom Systems, we’ve developed this technology and have had fantastic feedback from those using it,” says Nick.

MASSEY FERGUSON LAUNCHES OFFICIAL CLOTHING COLLABORATION Special line of dual-branded Raging Bull and Massey Ferguson clothing announced

in a Raging Bull outfit at LAMMA 2024 to launch the collaboration. Raging Bull founder and ex England Rugby captain visits Massey Ferguson stand at LAMMA 24 Raging Bull Clothing, founded by Phil Vickery, one of England’s greatest rugby players, has teamed up with leading agricultural machinery manufacturer Massey Ferguson for a new partnership in 2024. Raging Bull will become an official clothing partner of Massey Ferguson this year. Founder and ex-farmer Phil is well-known for a hugely successful rugby career at both national and international level and being part of the England 2003 World Cup winning team. The values that Phil has put at the heart of Raging Bull were instilled in him whilst growing up on the family farm in North Cornwall and then forged in the fire of international rugby. The spirit of integrity, pride and passion that drive Raging Bull, and Phil’s deep connections with farming, really resonated with Massey Ferguson and led naturally to this strategic brand collaboration. Since retiring from professional rugby in 2010, Phil has established his Raging Bull men’s clothing brand along with winning MasterChef and setting

up his own restaurant. Growing up on a farm in Cornwall now run by his brother, Phil was born to farm and regularly returns to work on the farm and fully appreciates the daily challenges that farmers face. Phil comments: “Growing up in the farming community, Massey Ferguson has always been there; red, reliable and ready for work. Over the years I’ve watched all their equipment become more and more sophisticated, giving farmers the support they need to get the job done. So now I am delighted to be developing a collaboration clothing range with the fantastic people at Massey Ferguson, with whom we share a very similar set of values – Integrity, Pride and Passion. It is an honour and a privilege to be one of Massey Ferguson’s official partners and I can’t wait to see this partnership with Raging Bull unfold.” The collaboration will design dual-branded Raging Bull and Massey Ferguson clothing in various styles, which will be available through the Raging Bull website and shops and the AGCO dealer network later this year. Visitors to LAMMA 2024, the UK’s biggest agricultural machinery event, will have the chance to win a Raging Bull outfit. Plus, a special edition Raging Bull t-shirt will mark the start of the new collaboration with Massey Ferguson and herald the launch of the new MF 9S. The limited-edition t-shirt

will be sold through the Raging Bull website. Lindsay Haddon, advertising and sales promotion manager, Massey Ferguson UK, IRL and Middle East, says the opportunity to work with Raging Bull and Phil Vickery is exciting for several reasons. “Phil’s farming background, love of the countryside and eating local will resonate with our customers. The launch of our new flagship MF 9S tractor and in particular its features and styling; our very own Raging Bull, mirrors the Raging Bull imagery and Phil’s reputation on the rugby field.” Sandrine Grenet, merchandise brand manager, Massey Ferguson EME concludes: “We know our farmers appreciate quality, functionality, durability and great-looking products, that’s why the collaboration with Raging Bull is such a perfect fit. There’s huge respect for Phil Vickery’s incredible success on the rugby pitch but also an appreciation that with his farming background he understands the needs of our customers. I am proud to say, together, we have come up with an exceptional range of stylish clothing, which is not only practical but a pleasure to wear”. Massey Ferguson will be in hall 12 on stand 470 at LAMMA 2024.

RETHINK NEEED INTO HOW WE REGULATE DELIVERY OF AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION

Radical rethink needed into how we regulate and incentivise the delivery of agricultural innovation in the UK

E

xpressed per head of population, or in relation to GDP, the United Kingdom leads the world in terms of high-citation academic publications in agriculture, according to a recent study. High-citation papers are defined as those most likely to support innovation and deliver impact. So why does UK leadership in academic science not translate into leadership in agricultural productivity growth, in which the UK continues to lag behind most other developed agricultural economies? And why has it not positioned the UK as a major destination for private sector investment in agricultural innovation – compared, for example, to Britain’s healthcare or medical life science sectors? Plant scientist Professor Tina Barsby offers some thoughts. A remarkable statistic was presented to me recently. According to an analysis of high-citation academic studies in agriculture, the UK ranked third, behind China and the USA. This analysis of agricultural papers in the world’s leading food producing economies between 2018 and 2022 was conducted by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), defining highcitation papers as a ‘gauge of innovation capacity’, and therefore those most likely to deliver impact. A total of 2,926 Chinese papers

6

were classified as high-citation papers, accounting for about 27 per cent of all such papers in the 22 countries studied. The United States (1,738) and the UK (634) had the secondand third-highest number, the academy said. But expressed per head of population, or in relation to GDP, this puts the UK streets ahead of both China and the USA in terms of the value and impact of our agricultural research base. By any standards this is a remarkable achievement, and a reflection of the significance attached to high-quality public sector research by successive UK Governments. But why, though, does UK leadership in academic science not translate into leadership in agricultural productivity growth, in which the UK continues to lag behind most other developed agricultural economies? And why has it not positioned the UK as a major destination for private sector investment in agricultural innovation – compared, for example, to Britain’s healthcare or medical life science sectors? As we mark 10 years since the launch of the UK Agri-Tech Strategy, whose introduction I was involved in as a member of the Agri-Tech Leadership Council, these are questions which have puzzled and frustrated me beyond measure.

Public sector investment over the lifetime of the Strategy has led to the creation of valuable new facilities in the UK agritech sector which might otherwise not have existed, but the Strategy itself has simply not delivered on its original ambition to unlock a stepchange in productivity growth, inward investment, technologybased exports and new models of collaboration between Government, industry and the science base. As the Government looks to reshape and revitalise the Strategy, possibly by combining three of the four Agri-Tech Centres into a single Agri-Tech Catapult, we must be honest and upfront in trying to understand why this was the case. I have previously discussed concerns that the Strategy’s funding model was overly focused on capital expenditure, making successful outcomes dependent on industry co-funding, and that the Agri-Tech Centres lacked a thematic focus on genetic innovation, the single biggest driver of agricultural productivity growth. But other factors are undoubtedly at play. I’ll offer a few suggestions, in the hope that others might contribute their own thoughts in return. The first is the regulatory environment. While the Precision Breeding Act is certainly one of the potential

NEWS

RETHINK NEEED INTO HOW WE REGULATE DELIVERY OF AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION

Radical rethink needed into how we regulate and incentivise the delivery of agricultural innovation in the UK benefits to flow from Brexit, the immediate reality of Britain’s departure from the EU has been a significant increase in the regulatory costs and resources required to service a much smaller market. Whether it is the approval of new crop varieties, new pesticides, GMO imports for animal feed or novel feed additives, the UK’s regulatory system is overstretched, with applications taking longer and costing more than elsewhere, even including the EU. With very few of the companies bringing forward these innovations actually based in Britain, this will be seriously focusing minds about the viability and attractiveness of the UK market. The second is the farm policy environment. The UK has no clear targets for agricultural productivity growth, and farm policies do not recognise food production as a ‘public good’. Instead, the majority of subsidy options under ELMS and SFI, including those most recently announced at the Oxford Farming Conference, reward farmers for adopting less productive practices, or for taking land out of production. The UK Government has confirmed that it has not carried out an ex ante impact assessment of its policies in terms of farm-level yields, agricultural productivity growth or domestic food production. This is in stark contrast to the United States, for example,

whose farm policies emphasise the use of agricultural science and innovation, with a stated aim of increasing farm output by 40%, while cutting the environmental footprint of US agriculture in half, by 2050. The third factor is the UK R&D environment, which is not sufficiently focused on translational and applied agricultural research in key areas. In plant genetics, for example, while UK institutes and universities remain world leaders in published research (as evidenced by the CAAS study), current R&D policy lacks a long-term commitment to fund the research activity needed to transfer early-stage discoveries into germplasm and tools of value to commercial plant breeders and farmers, with the possible exception of wheat. This 'Valley of Death' hiatus in the crop innovation pipeline has been repeatedly highlighted in Government-led plant science reviews over the past 20 years. UK public sector investment in translational genetics, through the Genetic Improvement Networks (GINs), totalled £5.5m over 5 years from 2018-2023. This compares with £90m investment over 4 years in digital and precision farming technologies through the Government's flagship Transforming Food Production R&D programme – a 20-fold difference, which needs to be rebalanced in favour of

genetics. So, in many respects, we stand at a crossroads. Before jumping two-footed into ‘more of the same’ with the planned Agri-Tech Catapult, we must examine whether our regulatory, policy and research ecosystem is fit for purpose, and/or focused on the right objectives. In my view, the post-Brexit era of regulatory delays and stalling agricultural productivity growth should prompt us to challenge and rethink how we regulate and incentivise the delivery of agricultural innovation. In terms of regulation, are there ways in which we can streamline current approaches, and/or allow greater emphasis on reciprocal recognition of authorisations by other trusted countries? There may be mileage in exploring former science minister George Freeman MP’s suggestion that the UK could harness its agricultural science expertise and its reputation as a trusted regulator by developing a global regulatory ‘sandbox’ capacity as a test-bed for new agricultural technologies and innovations, providing the data needed by companies worldwide to gain internationally recognised authorisation for their products.

CONTINENTAL: COUNTING THE COST OF COMPACTION

A wet autumn has left some farmers using min and zero tillage establishment systems concerned about soil compaction.

A

wet autumn has hampered planting and left some farmers using min and zero tillage establishment systems concerned about soil compaction. Waterlogging caused by soil compaction has been attributed to plateauing crop yields by the Potash Development Association, with some losses likely to reach 80%. The PDA suggests that whilst little can be done to change the higher than average rainfalls experienced in many areas of the UK, farmers can take measures to reduce compaction. Machinery and tyre specialists, such as Continental’s Tom Godwin, have been working with farmers to explain the technology available to help reduce the impact of heavy machinery on soils. “Managing tyre pressures using pressure monitoring systems and choosing VF tyres to operate at 40% less pressure than standard radial tyres will make a 16

significant difference to soil health. This will be particularly prevalent in mintill and zero tillage systems when operators are not turning over land to alleviate or remove compaction,” says Mr Godwin. In a November report the PDA suggests that yield losses due to waterlogging may vary between 15% and 80% in 2023/24, depending on the crop species and growth stage, soil type and duration of the stress, which will result in severe economic penalties. The report says: “Establishment is the most critical period in any annual crop’s life-cycle, as it is the time when the yield potential is set…and that… any management decisions taken from this point onwards only helps limit the reduction in this yield potential.” Mr Godwin echoes this, saying: “Continental has been working with farms for five years, as part of our Stamp Out Soil Compaction initiative, to help improve land management

decisions through the use of more efficient tyres. Our TractorMaster tyres have been specifically designed to reduce compaction by operating at lower pressures and we are always looking for ways to explain these benefits to operators who want to improve soil health.” It is widely accepted that compacted and waterlogged soils block oxygen supply to roots, restrict root growth and reduce nutrient uptake. As the wet weather has taken its toll again in 2023, it is hoped that with investments in tyre technology the severity of the problem can be reduced in the future. “It is easy to say that waterlogging is just the effect of heavy rainfall and gloss over the real issue. Farms that have understood the threat and changed their tyres to minimise the impact of heavy machinery on soil will suffer less now, and in the future, with soil compaction and waterlogging,” he concludes.

ew MF 9S flagship tractor range shown for the first time to the UK market. Anniversary edition MF 5S.145 to celebrate 30 years of steep-nose tractor design. Special spec MF 6S.165 and the full range of MF green and gold harvest products. Massey Ferguson will launch its brand-new flagship MF 9S large frame tractor to the UK market when it returns to LAMMA 2024. After over five years away from the show, Massey Ferguson will showcase its new six-model MF 9S range at LAMMA, which tops out at 425hp. Key features include an updated six-cylinder, 8.4-litre AGCO Power engine, with Engine Power Management (EPM) offering up to 30hp extra for all models, apart from the flagship MF 9S.425, which gets a constant 425hp. The new MF 9S range has the innovative Protec-U design featuring an 18cm gap between the bonnet and the cab to improve operator comfort and allow best-inclass visibility. William Judge, MF brand manager, UK, EIRE and

Middle East, says previewing the new MF flagship tractor at the premiere machinery event in the UK was one of the key reasons for returning. “There has been a high number of requests from both customers and dealers for Massey Ferguson to go back to LAMMA and, with the launch of our new MF 9S range, it was a perfect time to return. There has been a lot of speculation around the new tractor, and we are incredibly excited to bring it to market in 2024 to further cement our position in the high HP sector.” All models feature a DynaVT transmission as standard and are only available in Exclusive spec featuring a Datatronic 5 screen, Multipad joystick and vDisplay A-pillar readout. For the first time, MF will offer a central trye inflation system, which uses twin 650-litre/ min compressors to adjust tyre pressures, helping to reduce soil compaction. Other technology options include MF AutoTurn and Auto Headland. The stand will feature a 30-year celebration of MF’s iconic sloping bonnet design. Originally introduced

TRANSPORT AND MACHINERY SAFETY IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate the agriculture endures

T

ransport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate that agriculture endures. Here are some simple ways you can reduce the risk and keep you, and others, safe.

Daily and regular checks By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

Maintenance. Why you should care. Ensuring your machines and transport are well maintained will also ensure it is running efficiently and therefore likely to reduce long term costs associated with the machine, while also having the potential to increase its longevity. A well-maintained vehicle or machine is more likely to be complaint with what is considered roadworthy. As such, if an incident should occur (that is not your fault), you are likely to be in a more favourable position if your vehicle or machine is well maintained.

With nitrogen fertiliser currently costing around £360/ tonne, a 3 tonne spreader is carrying just over £1,000 of product each time it leaves the yard. At a rate of 200kg/ha a spreader with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 20% could be costing you around £240 in lost revenue due to uneven application. The NSTS test aims to achieve a CV of below 10% when a spreader is tray tested and an important factor is being able to SPRAYERS achieve this by testing the

product first. Litre weight, hardness and size range of granules are checked against manufacturers recommended settings and the machine set accordingly. Settings options in spreader apps are a very good guide but variability of product from when it was first tested can mean a small tweak to the suggested settings is needed. The kit required to do the product tests is relatively cheap and can be purchased separately however some spreader manufacturers do supply the kits with new machines.

BOUMATIC GROUP INTRODUCES THE NEXT GENERATION OF GEMINI MILKING ROBOT BouMatic: Introducing the Gemini UP, a distinctive solution for any herd size

B

ouMatic Group (consisting of the brands BouMatic, SAC andHokofarm) introduces the next generation of Gemini, the milking robot. The firstgeneration robot was launched in 2011. Over the years the model has been optimized with new benefits to take it to the next level. Therefore, the new milking robot will be launched with the name of Gemini UP to help reinforce the new level of performance that can be achieved for milk production. The Gemini UP has been developed with the focus on the best milking practices, cow comfort and lowering energy consumption. On top of the unrivaled, well known Gemini robot features, such as the unique rear attachment approach and the unobstructed open view, the upgrade contains a vast list of new cutting-edge features. Optimized milk path, according to BouMatic Group milking philosophy One of the major upgrades, at the heart of the milking robot,is the optimized milk

24

path, resulting in simply better milking. The milk flows now per quarter, without any restrictions, into the milk receiver. The new quarter milk line has an internal diameter of 19mm, which is

unprecedent in the market.

BouMatic and SAC flows are milked optimally in the Gemini UP. This proves that our robotic system follows the same tried-and-true method as conventional milking. Improved energy consumption in a

modular system.

Furthermore, the Gemini UP features This leads to maximum an improved energy vacuum stability and a consumption. This is mainly continuous milk flow without due to the new mechanical any blockages. Even cows circulation cleaning, which with the highest milk consumes less water at a Gemini UP – Double box, lower temperature. The available from BouMatic and washing unit is placed in SAC Gemini UP – Single the external technical room box, available from and is centralized regardless

BOUMATIC GROUP INTRODUCES THE NEXT GENERATION OF GEMINI MILKING ROBOT BouMatic: Introducing the Gemini UP, a distinctive solution for any herd size of the number of robots in a dairy farm. So, in case a farm has numerous robots, one washing unit manages all cleaning cycles. The same counts for the vacuum system and buffer tank. These are now centralized into one unit. More Geminis can be attached to these central units. This means that the system is modular and adaptable to all kinds of configurations, from small family farms to big commercial farms. Cutting edge vision system Gemini UP attaches cows fast and accurately thanks to machine learning technology implementation. This breakthrough technology now looks at udder imagery gathered from a wide range of cows and has allowed attachment and ultimately the throughput to rise-up to the next level for your dairy. The vision system helps to continuously adjust knowledge about different,

individual cow features such as udder and teat shapes and colors leading into a quicker and more reliable milking. BouMatic

herewith introduces AI into the milking industry. Full robotics solutions for all farm types “Continuing development and innovation is what BouMatic Group represents. We are always working on the optimization of our systems, taking the feedback from our customers and dealers into account. This new milking robot is thoroughly tested, and we believe it offers excellent performance and cow comfort, “says Uwe Osthues, Chief Commercial Officer at BouMatic.

“The new features are too numerous to sum up,” completes Rik Schoenmaker, Sales Director at SAC. “But one of the most important advantages is that we can now offer a full robotic solution to all types of dairy farmers, from small farms with less then 240 cows up to big commercial farms with 2000 cows. Mainly thanks to the abovementioned centralized systems and the recently added Gemini MAX, Herd milking system. In this system a group of cows are guided at fixed times to the robotic parlour”. Availability The Gemini UP milking robot is available on the market immediately through the worldwide BouMatic and SAC dealer network. COMMENT: WE ARE GREATER THAN THE SUM OF OUR PARTS

Vaccinating UK poultry flocks for avian influenza has been described as ‘cost prohibitive’

B

y Gary Ford, chief executive, British Egg Industry Council

I am very proud and pleased to be writing my first article for Poultry Business magazine in my new role as CEO of the BEIC after serving as Deputy from mid-August 2023. At the BEIC Council meeting held at the BEIC offices, London on 6 December, Andrew Joret retired from his long-standing role as BEIC Chairman, after 23 years as CEO, Mark Williams stepped into the Chairman role and I took on the CEO role. The four months in the Deputy role has given me the opportunity to get out and about and to engage with many stakeholders. This engagement – which has been very informative – will continue over the coming weeks and months and, in reality, will be an important and ongoing part of my role as I build on Mark and Andrew’s solid foundation. Engagement was a key part of my role at the NFU when I was Chief Poultry Adviser and is equally important to me in my new role. Collaboration is also a key part of the role. I firmly believe that we, industry representative groups, can achieve more working together than the sum of our parts. It is too

28

easy to work in silos, whilst doing a good job, but working together can amplify and enhance our effectiveness be that in policy work, for example, government polices around disease control or animal welfare, or in building a more resilient sector that is able to better face into current challenges or those challenges that have gone quiet or have simply not yet materialised. I am pleased that there have already been several examples of collaboration recently – the joint BEIC/BFREPA letter regarding the new laying hen welfare standards published by the RSPCA in midNovember and the BEIC/NFU Cymru/BFREPA letter to the Welsh Assembly calling for the 16 week housing consultation for free range layers to be published. Looking forward, we are also collaborating with BFREPA and the NFU regarding a Lion producer roadshow series of meetings to be held in February and March. The programme will involve around ten meetings spread throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The meetings will be held in the early evening and will be an opportunity to further outline Version 8 of the Lion Code as well as an update on Avian Influenza. The AI element of the meetings will include hearing from a

producer that has first-hand experience of going through AI as an Infected Premise (IP), sharing their lessons learnt. It should not be forgotten that version 8 of the Lion Code of Practice simply consolidated and amalgamated the various amendments that had been made to version 7, as well as pulling together the bird welfare elements into their own sections. In fact, there are few new standards and those are there to protect both site operators as well as the Lion scheme. It is now over four months since version 8 of the Lion Code came into force on 1 September and the roadshows will be an opportunity to give feedback on what the Lion auditors, NSF, are seeing on-farm. If you can make the Lion producer meetings, please come along as this is a two-way process – I firmly believe that working together we will continue to strengthen the Lion which is important as we all benefit from a strong Lion. 77% of consumers that we surveyed in June 2023 commented that the Lion brand stands for a guarantee of quality. This is something that we need to continue to work hard to retain – and build on – and, as part of this, it is important that all Lion registered sites are audit ready all of the time, 24/7, 365 days of the year.

CONSULTATION OPENS ON CHANGING EGG LABELLING RULES The Animal Welfare Commitee of the Welsh government has published a report outlining alternatives to culling newly hatched chicks

C

onsultation opens on changing egg labelling rules

Producers will no longer need to change how eggs are labelled during an outbreak of avian influenza under proposals planned to support British farmers set out by the Government. Currently, when mandatory housing measures are introduced, eggs from freerange birds may continue to be labelled as ‘free-range’ for 16 weeks – the existing ‘derogation’ period under the Egg Marketing Standards Regulations. After that period, these eggs must then be labelled as barn eggs. The proposals for England and Scotland – subject to an eight-week consultation – will amend the regulations to remove the ‘derogation’ period, meaning that free-range eggs can stay labelled as such throughout mandatory housing measures. The change has long been campaigned for by industry bodies including the British Egg Industry Council. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is now a global threat and the scale

of outbreaks in recent years across the UK and Europe have been unprecedented, with more than 360 cases confirmed across Great Britain since late October 2021. In both 2021/22 and 2022/23 the 16-week derogation period was exceeded, which led to significant costs for industry as egg packaging had to be changed to comply with legislation. Farming Minister Mark Spencer said: “We understand the pressures bird flu outbreaks place on our poultry and egg producers, which is why we continue to prioritise ways to support the industry during outbreaks of this disease. “I encourage all those with an interest to take part in this consultation to ensure that our free-range industry continues to thrive in years to come.” Chief Executive of the British Egg Industry Council, Gary Ford said: “With the vast majority of eggs produced in the UK meeting freerange standards, the sector is very important to both British consumers and farmers. BEIC has been calling for an amendment

to the egg marketing legislation to ensure that our free-range egg farmers can remain competitive and continue to provide British consumers with free-range eggs. This has become increasingly important due to the unprecedented levels of Avian influenza in recent years. The changes are essential to ensure a long-term future for British free-range eggs, which we know consumers want, and we strongly support the consultation”. Chief Executive of British Free Range Egg Producers Association, Robert Gooch said: “The British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) is delighted that producers should be able to protect their hens from the risk of bird flu by housing their hens in accordance with Government requirements without having to relabel their eggs, as a result of this consultation. It would also align the free range egg marketing rules with the European Union, which is important as it means that British producers will be on a level playing field with European farmers.” The consultation is open until 5 March 2024. 29

ALTERNATIVES TO CHICK CULLING EXAMINED IN NEW REPORT

The Animal Welfare Commitee of the Welsh government has published a report outlining alternatives to culling newly hatched chicks

T

he Animal Welfare Committee of the Welsh government has published a report outlining alternatives to culling newly hatched chicks in the egg and poultry industry.

in the laying hen industry, eg through identifying the sex of the chick embryos before hatching. The report also examines any welfare risks that might result from newly hatched male chicks no longer being culled.

The report looks at culling in different parts of the poultry industry including commercial egg production, chicks and embryos from broiler breeder birds, newly hatched turkey poults and newly hatched ducklings.

The report recommends that government should make the routine culling of newly hatched chicks and turkey poults, due to their sex, illegal as soon as reliable, accurate methods for sexing eggs prior to hatch are available to be implemented in British hatcheries.

The report considers technologies that could help end the culling of newly hatched male chicks

When this happens, the

import of eggs and of female chicks and poults from production systems in which there is routine culling should be made illegal. The report also recommends that any future Government welfare labelling scheme should, when defining its standards, take account of whether, in the production system used, chicks or poults are routinely culled due to their sex. The culling of hatched birds that have been wrongly sexed, and of those with evident abnormalities, should continue to be permitted, the report states. 31
