Marie-Hélène VandenBrugge-Smith, known as “Bébette,” empties out a tray of filled chocolates at her Augusta shop. La Bonbonnière specializes in Belgian chocolate shapes and flavors reminiscent of VandenBrugge-Smith’s childhood.

From left: Bébette VandenBrugge-Smith cashes out a customer at her Augusta chocolate shop, La Bonbonnière. VandenBrugge-Smith’s chocolates pay homage to her native Belgium in their ingredients, flavors and shapes, such as these hazelnut marbles, which are filled chocolates in the shape of seahorses and shells. Her red velvet chocolates, however, are inspired by her love for the Southern cake of the same name.

During the annual Island Treasures event, beachcombers search for glass floats that are stamped with the year, an identifying number and sometimes the artist's name or logo. Treasure hunters can register their float at the visitor’s center to receive a biography of the artist and a certificate of authenticity. Photo | The Jekyll Island Authority
