A Great Read // The book lovers’ club Members

Dear book lover,

W

elcome to our summer magazine. As usual we have packed it with exciting new titles, special sales and reviews.

Years ago, book clubs got a bad press for sending out unsolicited books – the so-called ‘editor’s choice’. A Great Read book club does not – and never has. We offer good prices all of the time; and never send you books unless you’ve specifically ordered them. As a book club, we ask our members to spend at least £20.00 during their first 12 months membership (your initial order makes you a member and counts towards this modest requirement). We will send you a free bi-monthly magazine like this one. You will never be asked to make a purchase from each magazine, nor will you be charged any fees. • • • •

We deliver UK wide for FREE (minimum order value of £5.00 otherwise it’s a flat rate of £1.99) and aim to dispatch your order the following working day. Our magazines represent a carefully curated book selection: all publishers’ offers are scrutinised to select the key titles - and some of the more off-beat ones too! Our website features over 100,000 books currently available from key UK publishers. We do not list everything possible: we choose those where we can offer you keen prices. On agreatread.co.uk you can pre-order upcoming books. We make our selections about 3 months in advance of publication. All pre-ordered books are discounted. Any order that contains books that are already available will be dispatched promptly with the pre-ordered book(s) following upon publication - and at no further postage charge! If you have any queries please email websales@agreatread.co.uk or ring 01373 823 451 or 08453 679 676 to speak to someone between 8:30am and 6pm Monday to Friday.

review // So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed

A magnificent book Daily Mail

I

was giddy with joy. I was Braveheart striding through a field, at first alone, and then it becomes clear that hundreds are marching behind me. So says Ronson as he recounts the swelling of support he received from the Twittersphere during his own personal shaming of a group of academics trying to hijack his online identity. “The wonderful feeling overwhelmed me like a sedative”. Riding a wave of pubic righteousness could be positive and empowering, such as during the backlash against Jan Moir for her homophobic column about the death of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately. “These were great times. We hurt the Mail with a weapon they didn’t understand – a social media shaming”. But has the rise of information technology and social media simply created a platform for the democratisation of social justice; or is there a darker side? Has it actually mobilised 140-character fuelled lynch mobs in a worrying renaissance of long outmoded public punishments? Are these ground swells of public opinion punching up, down or even in the right direction, and how well informed are they in reality? As ever, answers won’t come via a straight path of reasoned argument. Rather we must set out on an investigative journey, observing events through a voyeuristic window into Ronson’s often neurotic mind as he takes another winding road trip through the ridiculous. Indeed it is this identifiably human approach to examining larger themes which sets the author apart from many of

his peers, lending humour and a sense of the absurd to often serious issues. Meeting along the way the likes of eccentric Texas judge Ted Poe who specialises in sentencing criminals to imaginative and cruel public punishments; FIA chief Max Mosley whose Nazi themed bondage games made tabloid headlines; bestselling plagiarist Jonah Lehrer, as well as the woman who tweeted a tasteless joke whilst boarding a plane and alighted 11 hours later to find her life ruined by widespread international vilification – we gain an insight into what it means in the 21st Century to be publicly shamed.
