YEONHWA SUNG
Yeonhwa Sung’s stated goal in her hanji works is to instigate the flow of streams within the subconscious that slake the stimuli-weary modern soul with internal rest and tranquility. Hanji is the Korean paper-making process that uses the bark and resin from the dak tree to craft a fabric-like, durable writing medium. This message of halcyon reassurance is conveyed with a surprisingly calm semicubist abstracted style that integrates acrylics like warm wheat, faint creamy pinks, buck wheat, swiss coffees, Manhattan grays, almost-purple-deep, umbers and deep slatey blues and grays.
As a singularly-accomplished, multi-award-winning expert in calligraphy, Sung teaches the craft in her hometown of Daegu, South Korea. She often adds lettering and characters to her works, like elegant graffiti. She is also a literal shelf-clearing bestseller after her LA ART premier.
Her chromatic mien of light but also earthy came from the beauty she saw on the canvas from a spilled cup of coffee. Sung often fortifies and adds texture to her framed works with the added tradition of candle-wax curing the surface, adding to the longevity that reinforces her message of comforting impulses. Impulses that parallel her fascination with the ancient elemental ways. She sees these ways as an obverse to today’s productive and convenient but clamorous and often superficial digital world.

I use traditional eastern materials and techniques like calligraphy and hanji, handmade Korean paper, and blend them with acrylics and coffee. I love the warmth and tranquility of all that is ancient and I try to convey these feelings with minimalist compositions and a soft palette of beiges and browns. My work is an abstract reflection of my emotions, stories, and memories; images of myself as a child scribbling, the leaves changing through the seasons, or the gentle sound of the rain.
