MEGAN MICKAEL

Growing up, Megan Mickael’s family moved constantly: the only space that never changed was her mother’s art studio. This studio became Megan’s safe space, and generated the passion for art that shaped her into the artist she is today. Megan works in the medium of photography, snapping her documentary images anywhere and everywhere; deeply introspective, at times psychologically charged. Megan’s oeuvre exhibits a broad range of subject matters, yet is all connected by the reverence she feels towards the visual phenomena she experiences at any given moment.

Megan likes to explore places and spaces that are not viewed as photographically picturesque. Precision matters less to her than producing imagery that piques a viewer’s curiosity and elicits strong feelings. Megan received a BFA in Painting and Photography from Southern Methodist University’s Meadow School of the Arts. Today, she dedicates herself to her art full-time, and she belongs to the LA Center for Photographic Arts and the Palos Verdes Art Center. Her achievements in photography would not be so if it were not for the time spent in her mother’s studio; in fact, at age eight, she told her mother she would be an artist when she grew up. Megan never lost sight of this dream, and she still finds fulfillment in expressing herself through art.

As an artist I set out to create pieces that provoke curiosity and passion. I am an explorer of unfamiliar, unobserved beauty; handing myself over emotionally and submerging myself in the moment. I listen for the whispering of people, places, and things begging to be documented and acknowledged. Over the years, my work has evolved from precision of line and light to the exploration of composition, color, texture, and manipulation. Precision matters, yet arousing curiosity and strong emotion is more important to me. By lending a painterly feel to the photographic medium, paired with collages and new world mixed media, each piece I fashion becomes intimately unique and personal.
