Dear Students, Parents, and Friends: This great prayer was prayed over me when I was young, and it’s my prayer for our Assemblies of God young people:

“Lord, help them to lay foundations strong enough to bear the weight You will later place on them.” Our Assemblies of God Fellowship holds as one of its key values investing in the next generation! I believe one of the primary ways our Fellowship can invest in you is by providing the opportunity for you to attend one of our 18 colleges and universities. We need young people who will change the world, and I can think of no better way to do that than preparing for future life and vocation in one of our schools. The Assemblies of God College Guide gives you an overview of the 18 colleges and universities that carry the endorsement of the Assemblies of God. Please use this Guide to assist you in your selection process. Does it cost money to attend one of our schools? Yes. Is it cheaper to go to a community college? Yes, but is it worth it? It’s worth it to have Spirit-filled and knowledgeable professors. It’s worth it to be surrounded by strong Christian friends. It’s worth it to be in smaller classes taught by a real professor instead of huge classes taught by a graduate teaching assistant. It’s worth it to be in chapel and to experience times of revival. The worth of one of our schools is far greater than the cost! Sincerely yours in Christ,

George O. Wood General Superintendent

Our team in the Alliance for Assemblies of God Higher Education office has prepared this College Guide for anyone interested in our 18 schools. We hope you’ll take the time to read through this informative publication. Some of the most crucial and powerful years in my life were those I spent at an AG college for my undergraduate studies. I also attended another AG school for graduate work. My experience was used by God to shape my life! Our academic programs are excellent; we do not apologize for scholastic rigor. Our commitment to the integration of faith and learning drives our passion for spiritual growth in the lives of our students. Some educational institutions may teach a student how to make a living. We provide more than that for our students; we teach our students how to live, more specifically how to live and make an eternal impact for the kingdom of God. Our schools are also great places to build relationships that can last a lifetime. To this day, I have close friendships with many of the students with whom I walked the campus of an AG college. Though we may now live great distances from each other, we still encourage each other in our faith journey. I hope you will seriously, prayerfully consider attending one of our schools listed in this guide. The educational, spiritual, and relational foundation you can build during your time there can prepare you for the rest of your life! We want YOU to be part of the growing number of men and women who choose to be shaped by God at one of our schools! Investing in the next generation,

Bob Cook - President The Alliance for AG Higher Education

The Spiritual Syllabus By E mily Bar n ey a n d Cou rt n ey G a r c i a

College classes begin with introductions, new faces, and most importantly, a syllabus. This informational packet containing assignment schedules and student expectations serves as the lifeline for students for the next few months. What would happen if we treated God’s syllabus with such care? Much like a college course, God has given instructions to live by and, similar to a professor, He desires to help us learn. If you have spent any time in church, you have probably been told to read your Bible and pray on a daily basis. Sermon clichés aside (“For the thousandth time, read your devotions!”),

Your personal devotional life must be rooted in an understanding of the urgency to meet with God. this is about explaining the necessity of a personal devotional life rather than dependence on community based faith. Many students believe that by attending an AG college or university spiritual disciplines will automatically follow. This misconception leaves college graduates desperate to return to the days of structure and formal chapel services, finding

14

their personal devotional lives lacking. While these resources found in AG colleges are invaluable during the four-year college experience, they are meant to enhance your own personal walk with Christ, not create the foundation upon which your walk is built. The Christian walk requires discipline and communication. Your personal devotional life must be rooted in an understanding of the urgency to meet with God. Time in prayer and devotion is not just something we do; it’s not a task to be accomplished, but instead a discipline to cultivate. Mark 1:35 shows an example Christ set for believers, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” The point of this scripture is not the time of day at which Christ went away to be with God, it is the fact that Christ needed time with God. There are many examples in scripture of Godly men and women seeking Him (Abraham, Job, Jacob, Moses, Hannah, and David). These men and women did not have the New Testament and they understood the importance of time in prayer. This time alone takes work while living in a dorm full of other students; distractions are inevitable. Each individual must determine the place and time that best fits within his or her academic and extracurricular schedule. The college season provides preparation for the future God has for you. What better time to both seek and listen to His guidance for that future?

College education packs a financial punch, and the cost plays a vital role in determining the college you will attend. Hona Amer, Evangel University graduate and author of Smart Work U, understands the crucial process of handling college debt before, during, and after your educational experience. “I knew that if I had college debt, it would limit my options after college. And, college debt limits people’s dreams every day,” Amer said. “They struggle to be a youth pastor, missionary, teacher, or to follow God’s call into the business world because of student loan debt.” Financial pressures are at the forefront of many students’ minds, but many options are available to ease the burden significantly. Scholarships and the other forms of financial aid provide money for tuition and other fees related to the college experience.

Tap into College Resources to Cut Expenses The Alliance for AG Higher Education, in partnership with other AG departments of the General Council,

extend a helping hand to many students each year attending one of our AG colleges or universities. More information about our scholarships is available online, at colleges.ag.org/students/scholarships.cfm. • Riggs Scholarship • J. Robert Ashcroft National Youth Scholarship • Making the Difference Scholarship • Ethnic Minority Scholarship Many other scholarship opportunities are available at the school you wish to attend, which will involve some of your own research. Never be afraid to contact a college to ask questions about a scholarship opportunity through E-mail or phone correspondence. Scholarships hack away at tuition, but many students need extra income to provide for costs of living while attending school. For extra cash, serve at your favorite restaurant, give plasma to a nearby plasma center (you can do homework while you’re there!), or sell unneeded possessions on Craigslist. These are just a few suggestions. Feel free to get creative!

Explore Community and Church Benefits Community and church organizations can offer financial rewards for their participants; have a chat with some of your organizational leaders to find out what applies to you. Also, your parents’ employers sometimes provide financial benefits to dependents in higher education, so it is good to check with them. Almost every scholarship application requires you to record the organizations and extracurricular activities in which you have participated. While researching what types of financial assistance your organizations offer, save time by recording your activities and years or months of involvement so you can copy this information over to scholarship applications.

Fuel Funding at the Federal Level Evie Meyers has been director of Financial Aid for more than 15 years at Valley Forge Christian College and knows the “ins and outs” of the federal assistance provided to students on the college level. “Most of government aid is based on financial need, which is determined by income tax information – your own and that of your parent(s) or legal guardian,” Meyers said. File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine how much aid you are eligible to receive from the government. Be wary, though, of receiving loans if you do not need them for tuition payments. Many students assume this “free money” will

Begin with an End in Mind So how do you financially prepare for your future? The journey from point A (high school grad) to point B (college grad) is anything but clear. If you have not set up a budget already, start now. Budgets give you binoculars to see down your financial path—some further than others. Plus, budgeting teaches you self-discipline, and ultimately puts slack on the financial leash that others may hold. Sounds marvelous, right? Above all, communicate with God, close friends and faculty. They are your sources of wisdom and encouragement through your deepest financial struggles. Use the resources you have and trust God to multiply these resources. Amer said, “By the time you get close to the end of high school or college, you are ready to move on to the next chapter of your life. But first, you have to begin with the end in mind. You have to envision yourself graduating from college. Define the end goal, and then apply strategic planning to make the end goal happen.”

help boost their college lifestyle, whether through a sleek entertainment system, snazzy car or a bulky wardrobe from the Gap. And it will, until the loan payments kick in. Learning to the Highest Degree By matt smith

Soon, high school classes, study habits and extracurricular activities will be elevated by the rigor of college courses and experiences. Semesterlong projects, research papers and activities hosted by college organizations will consume most of your time and energy as a full-time college student. How should students approach this new life? Michele Vanasse, Chair of the Teacher Education program at Trinity Bible College, suggests a three-fold approach: 1 Determine passions and interests (general or specific) 2 Make your course choices based on the above 3 Stick to it “College is a time of preparation for the future,” Vanasse said. “The habits developed in college will continue on throughout your lifetime.” In order to achieve a high GPA and maintain awarded scholarships it is important to develop study habits early. To maximize time and efficiency, plan ahead to complete

assignments. Study for finals on the way to events or use the library for projects requiring total focus. Online classes and Web sites, if used correctly, can boost productivity with research, communication and understanding of material. In addition to great study habits, continuous, clear communication with professors is essential. According to Vanasse, classes give multiple opportunities for interaction, and students must “actively participate” to truly process and apply what they are learning for future endeavors. It is important for students to initiate questions, because it enables professors to relate content to specific needs from his or her own personal background and life experience. “This type of interaction gives students a lens by which they may view the terrain of their vocational goals and aspirations, helping them to make wise educational choices,” Vanasse said. Robert Love, Vice Provost and Dean of Education at Global University, states, “Even though

well prepared online courses are highly effective, there needs to be sufficient instructor contact, support services, and technology training.” Love teaches his students exclusively online, but maintains that teachers can give their students just as much feedback and aid in learning the material as a classroom setting. “High school seniors should prepare themselves for a new kind of life, a life in which they must take responsibility for their own learning,” Love said. “Today’s adult learners need to be practical problem solvers. They must become autonomous, self-directed, and goal oriented.” The true key to academic success lies in responsibility and adaptation to the college environment. While your purpose in attending college is to focus on academics and to achieve the best overall college experience, you should participate in extra-curricular activities, build friendships and schedule breaks. A balanced college career takes both work and commitment but is not only achievable; it is within your grasp.

college checklist Fall of Junior Year Prayerfully consider what kind of college you would like to attend. Take the PSAT/NMSQT® in October. This standardized test provides opportunities to earn scholarships. Collect information concerning schools of interest. You can obtain information from the internet, college fairs, college catalogs and even students in your area who may attend these schools.

Spring of Junior Year Narrow your college choices as much as possible. Visit colleges you have selected. Get a tour of the campus, attend chapel, eat in the cafeteria, visit classes, meet professors, and spend the night in the residence halls. Take the ACT or SAT. The guidance counseling office of your high school can tell you how to sign up for the test. (Take the test two or three times in order to obtain the best score possible.)

Summer before Senior Year N arrow your college choices to your top three. B egin your scholarship search! Start a rough draft of your admissions and scholarship essays to include with applications.

Fall of Senior Year Submit applications to the colleges you have chosen. Some schools have different application prices for electronic and paper applications. Find out if the schools to which you are applying do. If you haven’t visited the campuses of all your top choices already, be sure to do so this semester, if you are able. Research/complete any scholarship and financial aid forms you may need. Become aware of interview or audition dates that pertain to you. Don’t let deadlines pass you by…be proactive! Consider the option of retaking the ACT or SAT, if you think you can improve your score. You usually get to use your highest score, even if you don’t improve it the second time.

Spring of Senior Year Look for acceptance letters in the mail. Ask your parent(s) or guardian(s) to file their income tax returns as soon as possible. You will also need to file yours if you have income to report.

F ill out your housing/roommate application and any other departmental applications. Your college may also require a deposit. O nce you receive your financial package from your top schools, figure out how much the college will cost and how much money you will need for living expenses. Work out a general budget for the next 4 years. D ecide whether you will need to take out loans or get a job...or both. Make your final college decision, if at all possible. Graduate from high school. Congratulations!

Summer before College Find out when the residence halls or campus will be open and plan your arrival. Keep in mind you may need to arrive early for freshman orientation activities. A sk the college admissions counselor if you can register early for your classes. C omplete health documentation and financial aid forms, as required. G et ready...You are about to embark on an amazing journey!

Complete the FAFSA before the priority deadline. The earlier you submit the form, the more likely you are to receive all of the aid for which you are eligible.
