THIS WAS OUR
The Florida Canyon Emergency Pipeline Project in San Diego challenged contractor Hazard Construction. The “emergency” required immediate replacement of 550’ of rusted metal storm drainage pipe with 10’-diameter cement pipe. Excavation depth ranged from 15’ wide/15’ deep to 26’ deep to protect steep slopes and allow for pipe size and required vertical clearance. Tight work space radius was both a safety and functional concern. With confined trench space and heavy piping materials, expert shoring was critical to the project’s success. A Trench Shoring Company (TSC) Operations Manager and Slide Rail Specialist were involved from project scope through excavation phases. Multiple inventory locations allowed TSC to provide 100’ of its SBH® Slide Rail Shoring from local stock. Leap-frogging the slide rails ahead 5-1/2 times as each pipe section was laid resulted in better control of shoring used, project cost and time savings. We offer the largest inventory of Slide Rail Systems with panel sizes from 6’-28’, so we’ll be there for your challenging project too! © 2019 Trench Shoring Company

Every two years, we award the contractors that build the outstanding buildings and supporting infrastructure that help make San Diego America’s Finest City. Our record number of award entries showcase the diversity of projects from a new downtown hotel to the neighborhood fire station. A range of jobs are represented as you review the 2019 award projects: hospitality, education, recreation, health services, military, energy, tourism, bridge and road work, faith-based, and institutional work. These projects, public or private, are an integral part of the region’s economy, and they represent the hard work of architects, engineers, and construction firms. Communities around our region will benefit from these projects for years to come as they provide infrastructure to our growing region, as well as provide services to the residents and visitors. Projects this year include transformations to iconic locations along with new structures to our city landscape. Each company should take great pride in what they have built for our city. BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: Southwestern College Wellness & Aquatic Complex CONTRACTOR: Balfour Beatty OWNER: Southwestern College ARCHITECT: Gensler PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The new $54 million complex replaces the college’s former gymnasium
and aquatic facilities. It houses a three-court gymnasium with team locker rooms, cardio and weight training space, multi-purpose instructional space, staff offices, and a community room. The aquatic area consists of three pools; a 50 meter “Fast Pool” to support competitive swim and water polo events; a 5 meter “Flex Pool” with variable depths to support diving, physical education programs, recreational swimming, water safety programs; and a 25 yard “Adaptive Therapy Pool.” The facility serves as both the home for several school athletic teams as well as the wellness and recreation epicenter of the campus and community.

PROJECT: Bayside Fire Station No. 2 CONTRACTOR: Barnhart-Reese Construction, Inc. OWNER: Civic San Diego ARCHITECT: Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood, the fire station solves a
longstanding problem for the local Fire Department – meeting response times for the waterfront areas of downtown, west of the busy railroad and trolley lines. The building includes a single-story of below-grade parking, an apparatus bay and lobby at ground level, and living spaces on the second and third floors – all connected by both a slide and fire pole. Challenges included the station’s location along the busy Pacific Highway/Cedar Street corridor, both of which are major arteries entering and exiting Downtown San Diego. Great care was taken to coordinate daily with the City of San Diego Traffic Department, and two other large construction projects to ensure both pedestrian and vehicle traffic were not impacted with road closures.

_ PROJECT: Huaxyacac Hall, San Diego State University CONTRACTOR: Clark Construction Group – California, LP OWNER: San Diego State University ARCHITECT: AC Martin PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This new housing facility blends seamlessly with the campus’ historic Mission-Revival core and supports the University’s mission of providing an environment that fosters _
success and bolsters recruitment, retention, and graduation rates. Huaxyacac Hall provides a focused freshman experience and a “place to call home.” The 200,000 square foot project includes faculty offices, kitchen, market, café, outdoor courtyard spaces, and can accommodate up to 1,200 residents. The team had to create the site area by building a large 53 feet high by 220 feet long retaining wall on a canyon. Despite this, Clark stayed on schedule and on budget to allow students to move in as committed.

PROJECT: Pine Valley Fire Station #44 CONTRACTOR: EC Constructors, Inc. OWNER: County of San Diego ARCHITECT: Jeff Katz Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Work on this project involved the demolition of an existing 6,900 square
foot building and the construction of a new 13,000 square foot fire station. This LEED Silver building was completed utilizing a Design Build delivery method, enabling the project to be designed and constructed in 18 months, from award of contract to grand opening. The true measure of design excellence is the building’s ability to hold up over time to the heavy use these types of facilities encounter. With this in mind, the walls in the apparatus bay and support spaces were constructed with CMU and integral colored board formed cast-in-place concrete.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: Sage Creek High School Performing Arts Center CONTRACTOR: Erickson-Hall Construction Co. OWNER: Carlsbad Unified School District ARCHITECT: Rachlin Partners PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 17,272-square-foot project features a two-story lobby, 345-seat
auditorium, and a back-of-house Black Box/Multi-purpose Room separated from the auditorium by a double wall and corridor to reduce noise and open flexibility for indoor/outdoor use. Consideration was given to sight lines and acoustics that deliver a more intimate experience and improve student attentiveness. Perforated metal panels on the entry facade are suspended in front of a structural glazed curtain wall to control the amount of sunlight cascading into the building. Construction activities were executed on the active high school campus without disruption to the learning environment, while ensuring the constant safety of students, faculty, staff and campus visitors.

PROJECT: Alvin Dunn / La Mirada Academy CONTRACTOR: Lusardi Construction Company OWNER: San Marcos Unified School District ARCHITECT: PJHM PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project replaced the Alvin Dunn School, which was constructed by
Lusardi Construction in 1960. It consisted of three new buildings totaling 120,000 square feet with 51 classrooms, library, innovation lab, kiln room, theatre, full-service kitchen, band room, multipurpose gymnasium, and administration spaces. The newly constructed school was built on an active school site over a two-year phased construction schedule with zero class interruptions or interim campus being needed. Lusardi Construction donated several building material samples that are being housed in the new multipurpose building display case. These samples give a snapshot of what products were used to create their new school.

PROJECT: SDUHSD Torrey Pines High School, Performing Arts Center CONTRACTOR: McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. OWNER: San Dieguito Union High School District ARCHITECT: Roesling, Nakamura, Terada Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This $24 million project includes a Black Box Theater, 350-seat proscenium theater, state-of-the-art lighting, audio/visual soundboards, acoustical panels, scene shop, green room, dressing rooms, a new dance room, music building, and outdoor amphitheater. Innovative construction techniques were used in this Construction Manager – Multi Prime project, including a posttensioned architectural cast-in-place concrete bridge, tension grids, and the integration of the heather systems into the BIM coordination process. Delays due to steel detailing and procurement were mitigated by tightening of the CMU activities and coordination amongst finish trades.

PROJECT: San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Parking Plaza CONTRACTOR: Swinerton OWNER: San Diego County Regional Airport Authority ARCHITECT: Watry Design and Gensler PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This Progressive Design-Build project serves as one of the gateways to
the airport, and provides a seamless transition from the travelers’ vehicles to the terminal. The site is over 9 acres, and the parking plaza is over 1 million square feet in total parking structure area, containing over 3,000 parking spaces. Off-site improvements consisted of parking lot reconfigurations, utility relocations, and connection into the existing campus. The most innovative sustainability component was the onsite rainwater harvesting system that holds 112,500 gallons. It reuses otherwise wasted water and eliminates the need to install a huge underground tank with fresh water. This reduces the amount of domestic water the Airport needs to operate its Central Plant when naturally occurring rain water is available.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: Emmanuel Faith Community Church Children’s Ministry Building CONTRACTOR: Erickson-Hall Construction Co. OWNER: Emmanuel Faith Community Church ARCHITECT: BGW (Building God’s Way) PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 45,000-square-foot, two-story building features large multipurpose
rooms with interactive play areas and big classic toys used as props and play apparatus. Building systems include state-of-the-art audio/visual technology and LED lighting. Site improvements included installation of a new traffic signal at a nearby intersection. A unique challenge was creating a facility that was colorful and fun for kids, with a color theme to match the church’s current logo using six primary and secondary colors. Three innovative materials and construction techniques that were used on the project were the 3Form art piece, a rooftop patio, and an underground storm structure.

PROJECT: Intercontinental San Diego CONTRACTOR: Hensel Phelps OWNER: LFS Development, LLC ARCHITECT: John Portman & Associates PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is located where the Pacific Coast League Padres played
from 1936 to 1957. The luxury, 400-room hotel showcases a 210-foot-tall building that includes 24 suites with floor to ceiling windows. Features include three levels of subterranean parking for 686 cars; 35,000 square feet of multipurpose indoor spaces; and 60,000 square feet of outdoor space. There is also a rooftop bar, a pool bar, and a café on the 19th floor. Hensel Phelps self-performed the concrete and placed 8,500 yards of concrete for the Mat foundation in a single 24 hour pour. Multi-agency oversight created challenges; however, the “give and take” became the motto and theme as all issues were skillfully resolved.

PROJECT: Sycuan Casino Resort CONTRACTOR: Swinerton OWNER: Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation ARCHITECT: Hnedak Bobo Group PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project included over 500,000 square feet of expansion and remodel
to the existing casino, including a new ground-up, 4 diamond, 12-story, 302 key hotel, swimming pools, spas, and a lazy river. This project also included 25,000 square feet of a new conference and events center. Architectural features include a cantilevered edge bar at level one of the casino, pitched roof with an eight-foot overhang at both sides of the hotel tower, and 12 floors of adhered stone on both stair towers. BIM coordination ensured all prefabrication was maximized and field efficiencies were achieved. The project was initially over budget by $25 million, but the Swinerton team used value engineering to reduce cost yet maintain the intent of the overall project.

PROJECT: Hale Ave. Emergency Sewer Replacement CONTRACTOR: Orion Construction Corporation OWNER: City of Escondido ENGINEER: Orion Construction Corporation PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The City of Escondido faced an immediate emergency after the
inspection of a deteriorated sewer trunk main feeding into the Hale Avenue Resource Recovery Facility sewage treatment plant. In April 2018, the City approached Orion Construction, which had crews and equipment working onsite by the end of the month. 1580 linear feet of 36” sewer main and 580 linear feet of 30” sewer main was replaced, a sewer bypass was installed, 11 sewer manholes were replaced, and 36 feet of abandoned lines were 100% filled with grout. Work was completed in August 2018, and it was an extremely fast-paced emergency public project in heavily trafficked areas on numerous private properties.

HEAVY/HIGHWAY PROJECT: Willow Street Bridge Replacement Project CONTRACTOR: Flatiron West, Inc. OWNER: City of Chula Vista ARCHITECT: T.Y. Lin International PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project required the removal and replacement of the existing Willow
Street Bridge. To maintain access across the Sweetwater River during construction, the new bridge was constructed in two phases. The 620-foot post tensioned Box Girder Bridge was built on 32 cast-in-drilled-hold piles, which varied in size from 30 to 96 inches. To convey local storm runoff from the project site, the contract required significant improvements to the area’s drainage. One of the more complex operations was the construction of a 600-foot long double box culvert. The 15-foot-wide by 5-foot-deep culvert ran down Willow Street and crossed the busy intersection at Bonita Road.

PROJECT: Gilman Drive Bridge CONTRACTOR: Mid-Coast Transit Constructors OWNER: San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) ARCHITECT: Safdie Rabines Architects, KTU+A Planning + Landscape Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This was a distinct project within the Mid-Coast Corridor Projects’
umbrella. The Gilman Drive Bridge is a 406-foot concrete arch bridge with three spans and a multicell post-tensioned box section covering eight lanes of Interstate 5. The superstructure, including the arch legs, consists of over nine million pounds of concrete. The complex design, coupled with the challenges of working over an active freeway, required innovative construction techniques to safely construct the bridge. which improves traffic flow and the movement of commodities and people between the United States and Mexico. It was broken up into ten phases to minimize public disruption. Work included clearing and grubbing, tree removals, excavation, grading, curb & gutter, HMA, PCC pavement, signage, striping, storm drain infrastructure, new irrigation services, street lights, traffic signal improvements and communication, and BRT station amenities. Best management practices were used to protect against excessive amounts of dirt, silica, and constant maintenance.

PROJECT: General Dynamics NASSCO Graving Dock Cofferdam CONTRACTOR: R.E. Staite Engineering, Inc. OWNER: General Dynamics NASSCO ARCHITECT: Triton Engineers, Inc. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This massive project was designed and constructed utilizing approximately
750 tons of heavy custom-fabricated steel components. It consisted of H-Pile, a steel waler system and sheet pile, each averaging 120 feet long, and driven up to 90 feet deep into the underlying mudline beneath San Diego Bay in an average depth of 30 feet of tidal bay saltwater. Dewatering the entire Graving Deck involved the around-the-clock pumping of 25 million gallons of water through NASSCO’s water filtration system, and R.E. Staite continues to monitor the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One of the biggest challenges is that the cofferdam had to be watertight and maintained within 6 feet of elevation in order to functional.

PROJECT: I-805 North HOV/BRT Design Build Project CONTRACTOR: Skanska OWNER: Caltrans ARCHITECT: AECOM PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project added one high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) / bus rapid
transit (BRT) lane in each direction of the I-805 freeway for approximately 4 miles from SR-52 to Mira Mesa Boulevard and the south-facing direct access ramps (DAR) at Carroll Canyon Road. The 2,280 foot DAR included a new 480 foot bridge and two 1,800 foot soil nail / tie-back walls with a maximum height of 45 feet. The new lanes, joined with the existing HOV/BRT lanes, now provide continuous HOV access to SR-52. An Integrated Project Office, formal facilitated partnering, over the shoulder design review meetings ensured that project schedule, budget, and performance objectives were met. Together, Skanska and Caltrans delivered the project with zero recordable injuries.

UNIQUE SMALL PROJECT PROJECT: South Mission Beach Lifeguard Station CONTRACTOR: EC Constructors, Inc. OWNER: City of San Diego ARCHITECT: Ruhnau Clarke PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project included demolition of an existing 897 square foot, three-story
lifeguard tower, built in 1974, and construction of a new 3,676 square foot, three-story lifeguard station. The new lifeguard station was built side by side the existing station to maintain lifeguard service in the area during construction. Work also included erosion control barrier; extension of a six-foot wide sidewalk; re-striping of accessible parking stalls; and landscaping repair. The project duration included a two-year delay due to a lawsuit filed against the City of San Diego by the Citizens for Beach Rights, and a three-month absence of work due to beach moratorium periods from late May to early September.

PROJECT: Avenida De La Playa Storm Drain Reconstruction – Phase 2 CONTRACTOR: KTA Construction, Inc. OWNER: City of San Diego ENGINEER: Rick Engineering PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project involved the removal of an existing, failed, pre-cast concrete
drainage structure and replacement with a new cast-in-place concrete structure. Each structure was approximately 650 linear feet in length and included curbs, streets, cross gutters, hardscape & landscape. Challenges included working in a limited construction area; a short construction schedule; continuous dewatering due to rainfall and tidal influence; as well as beach and property access issues for the residents, merchants, and public. Even with the adverse working conditions, the project was completed on time and on budget thanks to innovative construction methods, such as a well point dewatering system, shoring system, and effective stabilization of the trench walls.

PROJECT: Ladera Street (Sunset Cliffs) Emergency Bluff Stabilization CONTRACTOR: Orion Construction Corporation OWNER: City of San Diego ENGINEER: WSP PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A portion of the bluff near the historic surfer access staircase had collapsed
and fallen into the ocean. The City of San Diego was concerned for the bluff’s stability because it posed a serious threat to life and safety of the beach goers. The city, however, wanted to maintain access to the popular surf spot during construction. Orion Construction and WSP were engaged as emergency contractors, and promptly completed a stability assessment and presented several options for bluff stabilization. After the preferred option was selected, Orion rapidly completed planning and execution of design and construction work to restore safe access for surfers to the base of the bluff on an expedited time frame.

PROJECT: San Diego Zoo Rex’s Roar CONTRACTOR: Swinerton OWNER: San Diego Zoo Global ARCHITECT: FPBA PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 5,000-square foot site renovation, located at the front entrance of
the San Diego Zoo, is a 10-ton, 27-foot tall bronze sculpture of Rex the Lion landing on one paw at a 30-degree angle. This cantilevered structure is made possible by the large 50-ton footing on which Rex rests his paw, and by the stainless-steel skeletal frame which supports the 200 bronze pieces that make up his body. 3D printing was used to scale the sculpture from a 12-inch model to a 7-foot, and a preconstruction 3D site logistics plan helped with the 14-hour installation window in time for a surprise unveiling. There were safety challenges, but barricades allowed construction works to get in and out of the site with minimal disruption to the Zoo’s daily operations.

Diego Union Tribune Newspaper buildings to a state-of-the-art creative office facility. Both buildings were gutted down to the concrete walls and ceilings. Bergelectric was responsible for all aspects of the electrical installation, which included re-routing the 12kV distribution, and the demolition and re-routing of a co-generation system. The existing concrete structures made for a difficult electrical installation, and the power requirements for the old newspaper machines created challenges.

PROJECT: Sycamore Ranch CONTRACTOR: TC Construction Co., Inc. OWNER: William Lyons Home ENGINEER: Fuscoe Engineering PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This roadway project consisted of clearing and grubbing,
grading, creek diversion, storm drains, keystone retaining walls, sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt paving, crash cushions, lodge pole fencing, landscaping, and the installation of an enviro-flex erosion system. The cast in place concrete hydro arch culvert, which serves as a roadway bridge, had to be installed quickly, since there is only one excavator grappling attachment in the United States. The presence of ground water created challenges, but dewatering pumps and a highline allowed for the delivery of free water to a nearby golf course. It took 25 years for the project to be approved, but the constructed roadway now unites two communities.

SUSTAINABLE PROJECT PROJECT: County of San Diego North Coastal Live Well Health Center CONTRACTOR: Balfour Beatty OWNER: County of San Diego ARCHITECT: HMC Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by the environment that surrounds it, this project is a beacon of
hope and a shining example of sustainability. The three-story, 36,000 square foot facility houses the County’s Aging and Independence Services, a Military and Veterans Resource Center, Community Health Promotions, Regional Administration, Public Health Services, and Behavioral Health Services. Lean construction was incorporated into this Design-Bid-Build project, as integrated project delivery was utilized, as was A3 problem solving, and a Start-Stop-Keep process. Given a tight budget and short timeline, the team embraced the County of San Diego’s vision and delivered the first Zero Net Energy Facility in California and a LEED Platinum certified project.
SUSTAINABLE PROJECT PROJECT: UC San Diego Mesa Nueva Graduate and Professional Student Housing CONTRACTOR: Hensel Phelps OWNER: The Regents of the University of California ARCHITECT: Mithun, Inc. and RJC Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is the first of a three-phase program and one of the most student-friendly, energy-efficient, a nd technologically a dvanced s tudent h ousing c enters in the United States. The new $188 million mixed-use project includes 618,076 square feet of five residential buildings with 1,355 beds, as well as a 5-story, 904 stall parking structure. The state-ofthe-art campus housing has 11,000 square-feet of common amenity and administration space serving as a collaboration area for students, faculty, and residents. Through teamwork and a proactive approach, the team overcame a faucet manufacturing defect that partially flooded one of the buildings. The project was designed for sustainability and efficiency and received LEED Gold Certification.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Desert View Drive Slope Repair and Restoration CONTRACTOR: Cass Arrieta OWNER: City of San Diego ENGINEER: City of San Diego PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project was completed in a timely manner with the coordinated efforts
of civil, environmental, legal, geotechnical, and construction professionals. Due to the proximity to homes and a major highway, Homeland Security was consulted to create a landside disaster plan, and I-5 had to be shut down at night to bring in materials. The slope repair was designed to improve the eroded slot canyon beyond the original condition and stabilize the landslide potential. The storm drain was realigned and extended downhill to a safe point of discharge. Slope repair was complicated by limited access, coordination with multiple stakeholders, elevated safety concerns, access from I-5, construction extending into the rainy season, and permitting through multiple agencies.
UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: University of California, San Diego Satellite Utility Plant CONTRACTOR: Dynalectric Company OWNER: The Regents of the University of California ELECTRICAL ENGINEER: P2S Engineering, Inc. ARCHITECT: Hanna Gabriel Wells PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This new 7,000 square foot utility plant is the only integrated emergency
power control system on campus that serves a multi-building complex. It allows for offsite utility distribution, which eliminates generators in buildings and offers additional power reliability. Housing the entire system in one location offers cost savings to the university through ease of maintenance. In addition, the complex manhole systems allow for accessible maintenance and isolation. Another distinctive aspect is the architectural and structural excellence in the striated concrete building. The aesthetics were created through a process of mock-ups to ensure the layers of concrete reproduced an appearance that is cohesive with the existing campus.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Pine Valley Fire Station #44 CONTRACTOR: EC Constructors, Inc. OWNER: County of San Diego ARCHITECT: Jeff Katz Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 13,000-square-foot two-story fire station includes three deep bays for
parking fire apparatus and a half bay for an ambulance or battalion chief vehicle, support spaces, an administrative/training area, and living accommodations. The living spaces include a fitness room, kitchen, dining, day room, individual bunk rooms and restroom facilities, and administrate office space. The walls in the apparatus bay and support spaces were constructed with CMU and integral colored board formed cast-in-place concrete. The combination of concrete and CMU provide the durability, sustainability, and cleanability a fire station requires. Additionally, the rich texture and colors of the CMU complement the aesthetics and architectural character of this rural neighborhood.
UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Sharp Healthcare Chula Vista Ocean View Tower CONTRACTOR: Hensel Phelps OWNER: Sharp Healthcare ARCHITECT: SmithGroup PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This $190 million, 197,696-square-foot, seven-story tower connects to the
existing hospital on the medical campus, and features a large double-height lobby with a lightfilled space, and 106 spacious and private patient rooms. The new hospital includes six high-tech operating rooms, ten ICU suites, medical-surgical patient rooms, central nurse stations, family waiting areas, rooftop cafĂŠ, and indoor/outdoor dining with 270-degree panoramic ocean views. With two weeks until the deadline for the compressed collaborative structural review with OSHPD, the team came up with a solution regarding the mat foundation questions and preserved the schedule.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: The Plunge CONTRACTOR: Lusardi Construction Company OWNER: Pacifica Enterprises ARCHITECT: James Gates Architect PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Southern California’s oldest and largest swimming pool opened in 1925
as a Natatorium in Belmont Park, fed by ocean saltwater. This new state-of-the-art facility, designed for two separate climate conditions, features a glass retractable roof and mechanical system that brings fresh air and maintains a set temperature. Due to the harsh environment (just 100 yards from the ocean) all construction and finishes were designed to be anticorrosive. The mosaic tile within the pool is an exact replica of the tile that was used in 1925, and the arches are replicas of original precast arches that not only tie The Plunge back to its origin but also a majority of historic San Diego. Taking over the design of the pool’s equipment and filtration system was a challenge, but countless in-person design meetings allowed the team to pass inspection.
UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Gilman Drive Bridge CONTRACTOR: Mid-Coast Transit Constructors OWNER: San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) ARCHITECT: Safdie Rabines Architects, KTU+A Planning + Landscape Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This was the first Construction-Manager / General Contractor (CM / GC)
project delivered by SANDAG. The 406-foot concrete arch bridge with three spans and a multicell post-tensioned box section covers eight lanes of Interstate 5. The complex geometry required unique falsework and form designs. The superstructure, including the arch legs, consists of over nine million pounds of concrete. elected to perform a “Full Utility Corridor Upgrade” due to the potential of major traffic and community impacts. Catalina Boulevard is the main access point for Naval Base Point Loma, Point Loma Nazarene University, Cabrillo National Monument, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, and many other small businesses and local residents. Upgrades and replacements included six different parallel pipelines, 24” Steel Watermain, 16” PVC Watermain, 12” Sewer Main, 54 Private Property Sewer Lateral Replumbs, 18” RCP Storm Drain, and a new Fiber Optic Cable.
UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Walkabout Australia at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park CONTRACTOR: Pacific Building Group OWNER: San Diego Zoo Global ARCHITECT: Hubbell & Hubbell SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK ARCHITECT: Robyn Badger PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This $14 million, 3.5-acre project, includes a new 8 foot wide visitor path
that winds along several exhibit yards, an airlock house at the entry of the kangaroo exhibit, and three new barns that provide animal holding areas. Designed to look like an antique Australian Woolshed with reclaimed wood and metal, the largest barn also has an event space on the second floor. Small ponds and water features, including a donated water tank from a local farm, were added to the animal yards, while artists’ concrete formations, elevated decks and a rebuilt windmill added dimension to the exhibit. Pacific Building Group overcame challenges by working closely with animal keepers and the Zoo’s horticulture department to maintain the safety of animals, plants, and people at all times.
