Greetings from Montana

O

Galloway Breeders,

ver the past couple of years Michelle and I have embarked on a complete life changing journey. We bought a small ranch near Roundup, MT. We have moved the entire Blegen Galloways operation to our new location as of June 2016. We are extremely excited to continue to produce Galloway cattle in the heart of MT cattle country. Our Galloway breed continues to see increased demand. Even with the down turn in the current markets, functional efficient cattle are sought after. The prices may have adjusted some, but the fact that we still have demand is very positive. Beef producers nationwide continue to look at ways to decrease input costs. Most are looking to go back to a more moderate framed, good structured cow that can produce a marketable product without a feed pail tied around her neck. Galloway cattle do that. They are realizing that the high output cattle that they have been using do not last. Retaining and developing replacement females costs a lot of money. Having a cow produce two, three or more years longer has its benefits. A more moderate approach to performance is what keeps producers in the black year to year. The high milking, extreme growth cattle just don’t cut it when you run the numbers. The longevity of the Galloway is an attribute few breeds can relate to, let alone compete with. Use it to your advantage when you are talking with perspective buyers. The grass fed industry continues to see the value in using Galloway genetics. The ability of Galloway cattle to be non-selective grazers is getting noticed. The Galloway cattle’s ability to convert less desirable forages into high quality beef is being celebrated. We breeders have known that the Galloway works well, but struggle to get others to acknowledge it. We need to continue to emphasize the ability. Our need for actual data that represents what our cattle do is a necessity. It helps our association 6 • AGBA Directory

help our breeders. In today’s world of EPD’s, we have a generation of producers that only know how to look at the numbers when they go out selecting seed stock. We need to collect data too and have it available to those parties. As for the association, we have had some changes. We have a new Secretary / Treasurer. At the 2016 annual meeting Joyce Jones officially stepped down. I would like to thank Joyce for her many many years of service to the AGBA and its members. I appreciated her involvement over the past almost two decades. As we are a volunteer organization, I can’t thank enough, the breeders who step up and take an active role in the association business. Joyce, I want to personally say Thank You for everything you have done. The AGBA is going to be actively seeking bids for a revamp of the AGBA website. We are exploring many options, so please let us know what changes or features you would like to see. The website is an invaluable tool for attracting new breeders, and marketing your cattle. We want to WOW people when they go to www.americangalloway.com We are also looking at redoing the Galloway Junior program. We have been lacking in the support of our young Galloway breeders. As the rest of us age, these young people will be taking over. We need to get them involved, keep them involved, and create a group they can be proud to be a member of. I always want to hear feedback from our members. I can only address issues that I am aware of. Feel free to call me at 701-212-0112 if you have something on your mind. My ongoing goal has always been to get the Galloway breed the respect they deserve by the cattle industry. Our breed has so much to offer the cattle industry. I ask for your continued support and involvement as we accomplish it. Promoting Galloway Cattle Harley Blegen — President, American Galloway Breeder’s Association

2016 World Galloway Congress Delegation AT DRUMLANRIG CASTLE WITH THE DUKE OF BUCCLEUCH

SCOTLAND MANY THANKS “Alba – Moran Taing”

A

Caledonian journey complete with Scottish castles, highlands, lowlands, islands, lochs, distilleries, and the historical significance of most everything. A country abounding with every hue of green possible, ancient rock walls for pasture fences, centuries old stone farm houses painted white, frequent rain & pleasant temperatures. Bagpipes, kilts & tartan, lots of sheep & dogs, sweetbread, black pudding & haggis, drams of scotch and pints of lager and most im-portantly all the gracious gentle people of Scotland. A place where America has a lot of its cultural foundation, as well as, the origin of

GALLOWAY NATIONAL SHOW DUMFRIES, SCOTLAND

TOP: Senior Bull Class the Galloway breed of cattle. This is a swift impression of Scot-land which we envision upon reflection of our recent trip in August to the 2016 World Galloway Congress in Scotland. The mystique of Scottish Galloway cattle has always been fascinating to us. Thus, when the opportunity was available to actually visit their ancestral country and area, it was not something we were going to miss. The Congress was extremely well organized and the tours were great. Seeing local Galloway breeders, farmers & cattleman operate in a country so

MIDDLE: Beauty C1437 of Romesboech & bull calf BOTTOM: Blackcraig Sid Supreme Champion of all Breeds at Dumfries far from Oklahoma was very enjoyable and insightful. History and tradition are wrapped into the whole fabric of Scottish life. It seemed natural that Galloway cattle are part of the rural culture. Another aspect to this World Congress was the association with Galloway breeders from around the world amounting to approximately 250 people from 15 countries. This experience apart from all other things was amazing. An event founded with common Galloway interest bringing folks from different countries, cultures, environment, and perspective combine to create an occasion with a life of its own. This is one of the things we didn’t expect. The Galloway cattle we saw in Scotland were another item which we weren’t quite prepared for

either. We visited the Royal National Galloway show at Dumfries, as well as, several solid and belted Galloway herds in the region. The belted Galloway cattle tended to be more what we consider

traditional with moderate frame and look similar to belties in American. However, the solids which for the vast majority were Black, were very large framed cattle. We didn’t see any moderate sized black

Galloway. These cattle possessed the basic traits of our American Galloway, yet it was obvious that the Scottish selection criteria was a different focus than America’s today. Their current trend reminded us of the late 1970’s and 80’s trend we experienced in “the states” and Canada. As a personal observation, we hope there are traditional Galloway herds in the UK which have not followed this large frame size trend.

It would be easy to go on and on about our Caledonian experience, but the simple and quick summary – it is a beautiful & historical country, fascinating farms & livestock, unique global interest & relationships, and especially, the wonderful Scottish people and their

culture. Innsidh na geòidh as t-fhoghar e. “The geese will tell it in autumn.” Meaning: All will be revealed in due course. ~ Slainte (Cheers),

We’ve sold breeding stock from New England to Alberta to Oklahoma and all over the Midwest. You can recognize Kaehler’s Mill Galloway by their distinctive carcass length. In addition, we have direct marketed outstanding 100% grassfinished Galloway beef since 1996. Years ago DNA testing confirmed that Kaehler’s Mill Galloway are at the top of the tenderness scale. Canadian Galloway Association 2016 Report

H

ello fellow Galloway breeders & enthusiasts, to finish Galloway or Galloway-influenced The Canadian Gallowaywanting Association would this year the Canadian Galloway Association cattle on grass and providing “naturally” raised beef to has seen anto influxthank of newer members full of meet the growing consumer demandthe for these products. like everyone who attended great new ideas that will help us rebrand our breed Breeding stock sales have stayed consistent with past World Conference within Canada and hopefully abroad. ItGalloway was most eviyears as there are new peoplein wanting to start with Galdent at this year’s AGM in Campbellville, Ontario. Most Ontario loway. We have also seen a renewed foreign interest in Guelph, 28 • AGBA Directory of those in attendance were first-time AGM attendees that brought an open mind and fresh perspective, which will help update the Association’s image. Following the meeting, the board of directors elected the 2016/2017 executive: President Brian Robertson (Caroline, AB), Vice President Jim King (Innisfail, AB) and Executive Secretary Simon Lagace (St Hyacinthe, QC). The rest of the directors consisted of new-comers Vanessa Beach (Stouffville, ON), Chris Schapp (Drumbo, ON), and sitting are Kelly Worthington (Carstairs, AB), and Ward Marshall (Innisfail, AB). We were so glad to see new faces but also sad to see old ones go as their allowable consecutive terms were up. This year we also recognized the Russell Horvey family (Big Deal Galloways) for 50 years of Galloway promotion. Yet again we had a number of breeders do their part for breed promotion across Canada. Many attended the Royal Winter Fair (Toronto, ON), Farm Fair International (Edmonton, AB), Outdoor Farm Show (Woodstock, ON) and various fall fairs across Ontario. There has also been a rise in demand of beef producers 32 • AGBA Directory

Canadian Genetics be it live cattle embryos or semen. These positive trends may be a reflection of improved promotion and advertising methods. The Association has pursued some new ways to advertise. We have a new website that has been up for a couple years now and have made a new Facebook group that you can join: “Canadian Galloway Association.” This year marks the trial of selling a new annual gestation calendar that displays pictures of all three breeds from various herds. Contact the Association Secretary if you are interested in purchasing a calendar. They would make great Christmas gifts! The promotion committee is also in the process of creating brand names and a new logo that will be recognizable and can be universallyused for marketing anything from naturally-raised beef to top-end breeding stock throughout Canada. All-in-all the future looks bright for Galloway despite low market prices. Times like these force us to look outside-the-box and try new things. — Submitted by Brian Robertson, President of CGA
