“As we age, the skin cell replacement process gets slower so it takes longer for new skin cells to replace the dead skin cells. When people say their skin feels leathery, this is why. Just as important, the Collagen + Elastin matrix in the epidermis start to degrade. It’s just like when the columns that support your home become rotten or get eaten by termites. As the columns degrade your skin starts to “fall” which is what we call wrinkles.”



“In fact, we all start to lose about 1% collagen + elastin every year starting from age 18. At around 30 we’re losing about 1.5% every year. By 40, that number is 2%. That means that we lose about 10% of our skin thickness every 10 years."

"OH...you’re probably curious about coffee. Drinking a few cups of coffee a day is actually good for your skin. Caffeine can help stimulate blood flow which in turn helps skin cell regeneration. Just drink enough water and don’t drink 12 cups a day. I think that’s obvious.”

Genetic Factors “You want to know if that agent is full of BS? Well, she’s actually partly correct because genetics do play a part.”

“Asian skin naturally tends to show less visible signs of aging up to about the age of 45 due to a higher level of ceramides. But because of a thinner stratum corneum compared to Caucasian skin they tend to be more sensitive to environmental factors and harsh anti-aging chemicals like Retin-A. This is why you see most Korean skin care products, which are hot right now by the way, use botanical ingredients.”

“African American & Hispanic skin have a thicker dermis than Caucasians but have 50% less ceramides and have larger mast cell granules so it will show more spots, scarring and bumps BUT will show less wrinkles than the average Caucasian skin.”
