Todd Richard gets CMT screen time

Todd Richard choked back tears a few times last Thursday night, as he described his journey in the country music scene and his reasons for being there. He and his family, friends and fans had gathered in a conference room at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa to watch the series premiere of CMT's new show Big in a Small Town. Richard is a contestant in the country music based reality series. He's competing against 30 other contestants from across Canada for a recording contract, cash prize and a touring opportunity sponsored by the broadcaster. It's a chance of a lifetime, and watching the premiere for the first time with his supporters brought out strong

emotions. In the show, he told producers how he made a promise to his father that he would follow his musical dreams. His father died about five years ago, and he's been true to his word. Richard has sold his Harrison-based plumbing company, his house and some of the expensive toys he and his wife had bought over the years. They have moved into a 600 square foot home, and he took a job with the school district as a maintenance man. Richard then went on to say that if his wife asked him to give up his dream so she could have her life back, he would do it. But that's not likely to happen anytime soon. His wife Sylvia has been one of Richard's biggest supporters through the years. She sat beside him through the screening at the hotel last

week, and when his segment was over, they shared a kiss. On the show, Richard sang Life's About People, a song he wrote with Rick Tippe. The judges seemed to love him as much as the crowd gathered at the hotel. At the hotel, he sang a few songs including Life's About People, much to the audience's delight. He also described the journey backstage, confessing that he wasn't feeling well in the days leading up to the filming in Penticton. After the show, he hugged supporters and autographed CDs and merchandise. Viewers could "like" their favourite on the show's website www. biginasmalltown.cmt.ca until last Wednesday, Aug. 29. The second show, including another 30 contestants from Eastern Canada

and the results of the West, aired Thursday night, after press time. To find out the results of that show, visit us online at www.ahobserver.com. If Richard makes it through this round, he'll be up against five other contestants vying for the top spot, and the winner will be crowned at the CCMA Awards on Sept. 9. Richard has had plenty of success since letting go and chasing his dream, including being nominated for multiple awards at the Canadian Country Music Awards. You can see Todd Richard perform live this weekend at Bands on the Beach, in Harrison Hot Springs, along with the Vacationers, Ailsa Rose, Chris Buck Band, Trevor Murray, Ken McCoy, Brent Lee, Kenny Hess and Matthew Cheverie. Emcee for the event is Curtis Pope from Country 107.

Many hands make light work

Leadership students help to make first day at school brighter Jessica Peters The Observer

School always starts a few days early for the leadership students at Hope Secondary School. Led by teacher advisor Lenora Poulin, the kids get together for a retreat at the end of every summer to plan out the year ahead. They spend two full school days figuring out the school's special events. They decide on spirit events, fundraisers and activities to fill their calendar. They are the ones who will post their fellow students' names on the homeroom doors, and help plan the back to school barbecue. But this year, they had some other business to attend to first. This year, they donned gardening gloves, grabbed a few rakes, and joined the school's special education teacher, Rose Dennison, in bringing the school gardens back to life. "For the first day of school, it's important to make a good

impression for the students," Poulin said. While it's usually Dennison who cleans up the gardens, and the special education students who take care of them throughout the year, the leadership kids thought they could lend a few hands. And as it turns out, many hands do make light work. "What would have taken her all day took about 10 minutes with everyone helping," Poulin said. About 15 of the 25 leadership students were on hand Thursday morning for the work bee, under Dennison's direction. They raked out the dead leaves and dug up weeds before getting back to their usual routine of planning for the year. "The kids were awesome," Poulin said. But she wasn't surprised. "They do so many great things." Leadership has been offered at Hope Secondary School since Poulin and her husband started the program there in 1997. While it's a

regular class, it happens outside of school hours. The group gets together for an hour, Tuesdays through Thursdays, starting at 7:30 a.m. While learning about leadership, the kids are learning lifelong skills that carry into the workplace, Poulin said. By the time they reach graduation year, they each have a full portfolio outlining the many projects they helped with, planned and carried out. And whether they realize it as teenagers or not, they are learning skills that will last a lifetime. A former leadership student of Poulin came back to work as a student teacher recently. While at HSS, she was able to talk to the kids about the importance of what they're learning, and the benefits of it. "Sometimes they don't even realize that in planning something like a bake sale, they are gaining the skills involved for planning bigger events," Poulin said.

Red Apple store rolls into Agassiz

The Observer

Signs for Red Apple went up at the old Fields location in Agassiz last Thursday, and this week the company issued a statement announcing the store’s opening. While the head company that bought Fields earlier this year had announced the store would become The Bargain! Shop, Red Apple signs have been popping up across B.C. TBS Acquireco Inc. is opening moire than 30 Red

Apples in stores that were Bargain! Shops or were to become them. And opening day is getting closer, the release announced. The projects will include 3.25 kilometres of new and upgraded roads and a 47-kilometre, 138-kilovolt transmission line from the existing Tipella Creek Waterpower Project to the Shovel Creek Waterpower project. The commercial operational date (electricity delivery date to the BC Hydro grid) is Dec. 2015 for Tretheway Creek and Nov. 2016 for Shovel Creek and Big Silver Creek. There are several requirements listed including maintaining a minimum instream flow requirement, developing and implementing a Spotted Owl Habitat Mitigation Plan, and a "Navigation Mitigation Plan" for each the projects to address impacts to recreational boat use such as kayaking.

Hydro projects get green light from Minister Lake

Innergex has received environmental assessment certificates for three hydroelectric projects in the Harrison Lake area. The projects which have been granted certificates are Tretheway Creek, Shovel Creek and Big Silver Creek. Innergex currently operates 18 run of river plants, nine in B.C. The decision to grant the certifcates was made by ministers Terry Lake (environment) and Rich Coleman (mines). The proposed projects total an estimated $194-million, and will produce up to 72 megawatts of hydroelectric energy. That is enough to power 27,500 homes per year, according to a release from the provincial government announcing the certification.

Opinion

Looking back One local reader, Sylvia Barker, recently happened upon a few yellowing copies of newspapers, including a daily that stoical announced Bobby Kennedy had been laid to rest. She also discovered a 1990 Observer and two copies of the Agassiz Advance; one from '68 and one from '89. Instead of tossing the historical papers in the trash, she brought them to us. And as could be expected, reading them provided quite an interesting afternoon of time travel, amusement and contemplation. It was in 1968, we read, that new flood gates were installed at Hammersley. The pump was planned, designed and installed back when Wes Johnson was mayor, the Kilby's were retiring and Harrison Hot Springs was simply discussing a sewer system that has since been upgraded. Seems like a long time ago. Certainly technology has changed significantly over the past 44 years, and the upgrades that have been announced are long overdue. Like flood management, many concerns have stayed constant over time. The lack of local interest in tourism was outlined in a piece by then-editor John Green. He pointed out that "people are still crying the blues year after year" despite tourism being the fastest-

B.C. ViEws Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – NDP leader Adrian Dix has announced that one of his first acts as premier would be to withdraw B.C. from the joint review of the Enbridge pipeline proposal from Alberta to Kitimat. The two-year federal-led review will be mostly done by next May, but Dix proposes to start a new provincial assessment to examine at the B.C. portion. He doesn’t know how much it would cost, and under questioning he all but admitted the intention is to study the pipeline to death. Fresh from a summer tour of the pipeline route to reaffirm solidarity with its opponents, Dix is hardly in a position to consider anything but maximum resistance. As Premier Christy Clark did in her showdown

growing business. Sound familiar? Perhaps, he opined, business owners with an interest in boosting tourism could learn more about the Sasquatch, and start attending the screenings of a film being shown at Memorial Hall. Seems like solid advice that's finally being taken. Fast forward to '89/'90, which doesn't seem so far away, and you'll find even closer similarities. Even the names in the paper were familiar – John Allen, Lorne Fisher, Leo Facio, Terrill Scott and Andy Bodnar to name a few – although all for different reasons than today. It goes to show you that people who are inclined to speak out for the community will always do so, whether you agree with the tone of that speech or not. And in community news, a softball coaching clinic was cancelled due to lack of interest, and a singles club in Agassiz announced that three members wasn't enough to keep together. It would be easy to say some things never change, sure. But it's probably more apt to note our own history tells us it's those who are busy speaking up, making their voices heard, and getting involved in the community who really move progress along.

Studying projects to death with Alberta over benefits, Dix hinted that provincial permits for river and wildlife crossings would be made as expensive as possible, if not refused. The same fate awaits the Kinder Morgan plan to twin the existing Trans-Mountain oil pipeline to Burnaby. Dix left the impression that he would undo the years of work that have gone into bringing some rational sense to environmental approvals that can be, and have been, dragged out for years. The B.C. hearings would provide another platform for opponents, and more complaints to justify refusal at the provincial level, to go along with court cases and directaction protests. Speaking of which, the frontal assault by agitators at the federal Enbridge hearings has mostly petered out. After 4,000odd people were signed up to speak, most didn’t bother, and some hearings were cancelled.

The Agassiz ❖ Harrison ❖ Hope

Apparently slacktivists such as “Jonathan L. Seagull” and “Cave Man” didn’t make it out of their Vancouver basement suites to tell the panel oil is bad. Professional environmentalists

“The frontal assault by agitators at the federal Enbridge hearings has mostly petered out” are now wringing their hands over Ottawa’s decision to leave smallerscale reviews to the province. This means, for example, that there won’t be a duplicate federal review of the urgently needed refit of the John Hart Dam on the Campbell River. One reader suggested that environmental pioneer Roderick Haig-Brown is still spinning in his grave over the damming of this

legendary salmon river. Perhaps, but that was in 1947. Does it make sense today to lard pointless bureaucracy onto a reconstruction that replaces wooden pipes and provides earthquake protection, without expanding river impact? NDP environment critic Rob Fleming hammered away at the B.C. Liberals about this in the spring, reminding them that Auditor General John Doyle had exposed a lack of resources in the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, even before Ottawa’s changes. Fleming makes it sound like a huge new burden has been dumped on B.C. False. Provincial assessment already must be done with the participation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transport Canada, the provincial ministries of natural resources and energy and mines, and of course aboriginal communities. This is why it’s so long and expensive. And don’t be fooled into

believing that a federal review would go out and count the tadpoles and caribou again. It’s only the desk jobs that have proliferated. There weren’t just two levels of duplicate review, but three. Earlier in their mandate, the B.C. Liberals exempted major projects such as mines and energy generation from local government control, citing the “provincial interest” similar to the federal authority over projects that cross provincial borders. I agree with the NDP that B.C. environmental assessment needs more resources, in particular to do the follow-up on approved projects, as called for by the auditor general. Forest management needs more money too. All the more reason not to waste resources on political gestures. Hooked on Books club starting up for the fall

We’re still hooked – on books that is! The Agassiz-Harrison Hooked on Books book club is starting up for the fall. It can’t begin soon enough for those of us who’ve gone two whole months without a book club fix. Much like the addictive nature of caffeine and sweets (which we also provide), it is hard to say no to the temptation of a good read. We’re looking for willing converts to ensnare in our devious web of literacy, snacks and conversation; so we hope you’ll come and become one of us — unable to resist the lure of a good book and lively discussion. Even better, for those of you out there unable to admit to a book addiction, the Hooked on Books book club is the epitome of a recreational habit; you don’t have to come every month or even read every book. You’re welcome drop in and out when convenient. Satisfy your craving at our first meeting of the year, on Sept. 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Agassiz Library. Our first tantaliz-

Time to run for Terry Fox's dream

The Terry Fox Run is getting closer and organizers in Harrison Hot Springs want to get the word out. The Run will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16 from the main plaza at the beach. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the 5K walk/ run starts at 10 a.m. There is no entry fee, but donations are welcome. The Terry Fox Run continues the effort's of Fox's Marathon of Hope, in the hopes of finding a cure for cancer. A run is also being held in Hope on the same day, beginning at the Hope Recreation Centre. Registration for the Hope Fox Run is at 8 a.m., with a 9 a.m. start. They will be holding a 5K and a 10K walk/run. For more information, to start a team, learn about raising pledges, or to read Terry Fox's story, visit www.terryfox.org.

Fire department honours volunteer Darjes has been cleaning streets for eight years

The Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department has recognized a local man for his commitment to the community. Retired Harrison resident Art Darjes works seven days a week in all weather roaming the Village ensuring the streets are clean of litter, says Fire Chief Don Labossiere. And he does it out of a sense of community — not for pay. The retired volunteer firefighter from Ontario has been scooting around the Village for eight years now. “You can see Art in his custom built scooter two hours each day,” says Labossiere. To keep him safe, and to say thank you, the local fire department outfitted Darjes’ scooter with some high visibility decals and a LED light, in support of his community spirit. “Our department also recognizes the commitment of

A local cyclist is hoping that by participating in the BC Senior Games, he can inspire others to get active, too. Michael Scott, a 74 year old from Harrison Hot Springs, took

part in the Games in Burnaby last weekend, and was on the search for some familiar faces. He didn't find many. "I think Harrison has a significant population of seniors and I think they may be missing an opportunity," he said, by not participating in the

Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received. One (1) grand prize is available to be won, consisting of a seven (7) night holiday to Cancun, Mexico including airfare and accommodation for two (2) adults at the Villa Del Palmar Cancun Beach Resort & Spa (approximate retail value of $3,000.00 CDN). Games. "For me, it was exhilarating," he said. This was Scott's first time competing, but he bikes about five days a week, and will sometimes bike along the Haig to Hope and back. The route has two good biking hills, which helped prepare him for the 6.7 km loop around Burnaby, eight times over. "There were more hills than I do out here," he said. His efforts landed him a silver and bronze medal. But more than that, it's inspired one of this year's volunteers, Linda Andersen, to take part in the Games herself. "My experience has been such that I have been 'bitten by the bug' of the enthusiasm and kind spirit of the people I have met, including participants, non participants and volunteers, that I will register and participate in the 2013 BC Seniors Games," she wrote in an email to The Observer. She said it has been Scott's own willingness to get out and maintain a healthy lifestyle that has pushed her to compete. "His beaming smile is engaging enough to cause others to want to be a part of the good feel that participating

in events such as these Games," she said. Scott said he hasn't always been the pillar of good health. But over time he has changed his lifestyle to a healthier one. Competing in the Games was just another way to keep improving, he said. "I started riding because I wanted to lose weight and I can't run anymore," he said. "And then I got bored." When he heard about the BC Seniors Games,

he knew he had train. He filed his paperwork at the last minute, and made it a goal. He's hoping that when the Games come around next year, in Kamloops from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, he'll see more of his neighbours participating along with him. "It was so much fun, and there are so many opportunities for seniors to participate," he said. news@ahobserver.com

RCMP gave fines for noisy mufflers

q ECHOES FROM THE PAST Welcome to ‘Mahskeetoe Ville’

50 Years Ago, 1962 • Ernie Gover was to have a letter allowing him to go through the western gate of the Mountain Prison at any time. This was because part of the gate was on a public road giving access to the back of his property. The rest of the gate was on his land. • Agassiz police were hoping that Kent would pass an anti-noise bylaw in the near future, but in the meantime, they were doing what they could with the law they have and were cracking down on noisy mufflers with fines of $15 for inadequate mufflers. Harrison Mills Community Hall members made light of this year’s heavy mosquito population with a message in their billboard that reads: “Welcome to Mahskeetoe Ville No Swatting Plse.”

It was decided that the majority of members wished to carry on and that a new director should be found. • Perennial winner in the PNE Poultry show was “Timothy” of Agassiz who took first prize with his Silver Spangled Hamburg cock. The bird was also the best male Hamburg in the show. Mr. Timothy had 81 entries in the show. – submitted by the Agassiz Harrison Historical Society
