MISSION & HISTORY

T

he After School Arts Program (ASAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing young people with opportunities to create beautiful and meaningful works of art in a creative and collaborative environment. By inspiring the next generation to discover and embrace their own creativity ASAP hopes to not only enrich Gradient lives, but to change them forever. Founded in 1999, ASAP’s original goal was to engage local middle school children from Region 12 in an after-school arts program that was otherwise unavailable to them. With success and increased demand for its programs, ASAP expanded its geographic reach and extended the range of the children it serves. Since then, ASAP has produced hundreds of workshops, programs during the school day, summer programs, and events touching the lives of tens of thousands of children and adults from over 100 towns across Connecticut. In 2005 ASAP established the Inter-District Project (IDP) as a way to bring together young people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds to explore the arts through collaborative projects. Through the IDP children from urban and rural areas of CT team up to create poetry, photography, murals, dance, music, and theatre. White

In 2012 ASAP increased its depth and scope of in-school programming by working closely with schools to support math, science, and writing curricula through the arts. ASAP’s special in-school projects connect students to their curriculum through a vibrant experiential learning process. ASAP collaborates with schools in Bridgewater, Litchfield, New Milford, Newtown, Norfolk, Roxbury, Torrington, Trumbull, Washington, Waterbury, and Woodbury. In 2014-15 ASAP reached 93% of its students through in-school, non-tuition based programs, and financial aid. ASAP depends heavily on fundraising events and support from foundations and individual donors to provide these services. Without this support ASAP could not continue its significantly worthwhile and enriching programs.

A note from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, I n our 17th year at ASAP, we are as passionate as ever about creativity and learning. A SAP’s community of families, friends, and schools has grown dramatically because we are united in the belief that the arts are at the heart of educating the whole child. At ASAP, we see children as inventors, explorers, discoverers, leaders, and collaborators. Our students are full of curiosity, wonder and surprise, and we are here to support their individuality and help them in every possible way as they grow to become young adults. The creative process is a journey into the unknown. It requires exploration, observation, a willingness to falter and the determination to see things through. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing children light up with excitement when discovering that they can do something they thought was impossible. These are the human moments that ASAP celebrates. It is a gift and privilege to be a part of each child’s life and we are grateful to work with our communities far and wide providing opportunities for children from all walks of life. Thank you for supporting our journey. All my best, JoAnne Torti, Executive Director ASAP is funded in part by Connecticut Office of the Arts; Diebold Family Fund at the Connecticut Community Foundation; The Jean and Julien Levy Foundation for the Arts, Inc.; The Linda Allard Charitable Fund; Regional School District #12; Bank of America Charitable Foundation; The Breaking the Cycle Foundation; Community Table Foundation; Gould Family Foundation; Parker Rogness Fund at the Connecticut Community Foundation; The Sara & Robert Savage Charitable Foundation; and Union Savings Bank. 11th Annual celebration of Young Writers & ASAP Benefit Auction Saturday, June 4, 2016 • The Gunnery, Washington black

The Celebration of Young Writers began as a way to encourage children to share their love of writing. At this event we recognize their talents by bringing them together with celebrity authors and actors. We also look forward to celebrating teachers through our Frank McCourt Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and to our benefit auction, which allows ASAP to continue its mission of providing artistic and cultural opportunities for children.
