The Victoria singer-songwriter’s powerful expressive voice lights up the stage. BY JOSEPH BLAKE

Ange Hehr began her career as a 16-year-old musician playing in her father’s rock band in northern B.C. From their home in Fort Nelson, the band played halls and bars for almost a decade before Ange moved to Victoria, where she “worked in construction, retail, lots of odd jobs before returning to music about two years ago.” As we sit with her dog Dexter on the patio of the Cook Street Moka House, the youthful-looking 34-year-old describes her music as “Top 40 across many decades. I like to play music that makes people’s eyes light up.”

Asked what makes her own eyes light up, Ange brushes her short, dark hair back from her face and says, “Anything by Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. It’s such an honour to sing any of her songs ... and Jann Arden’s Good Mother. I relate to her a lot. I’m really close to my family too, so I change the words to Good Mother a little to reference my family.” Hehr continues, “I’m really passionate about my family, my partner and nerdy things like video games and puzzles.” en while giving Dexter a pat on the head, she quietly adds, “I like to read too.” Her father started her out on drums when she was six. She played drums in school bands and also plays piano (“I can make stuff up, but I’m no piano player.”), but her main instrument is guitar. She plays a Guild acoustic and a Fender Stratocaster she has played since she was 17. Asked if she’s a guitar geek, the singer-songwriter shakes her head. “No, I’m an ear nerd. I can emulate anything I listen to, but Lane Arndt is the real guitarist in my band,” which also includes 54-40 veteran Matt Johnson on drums and D’Arcy Ladret on bass. “I’m playing live four or five nights a week at Irish Times, Bard and Banker, Penny Farthing Pub and Moby’s Pub on Salt Spring Island. Most of those are solo gigs, but I love playing with my band too.” When I heard Hehr playing solo at Bard and Banker the night aer the Super Bowl, she capped her first set with a playfully passionate Katy Perry medley aer belting out songs by e Eagles, Imagine Dragons and Beyoncė. producing a soulful reading of “Killing Me Soly.” She’s a charismatic, strong singer who is currently focusing her creative energies towards writing original songs. Catch her live.

HERE IS SOMETHING I LIKE about Whitehorse. I’ve been listening to the music put out by contemporary bands, trying to identify what it is about their sound that defines the sound of our generation. Every decade has a distinctive sound to it. ere is a distinctive sound to the style of singing, and particularity to the instrumentation. For example, if you listen to Petula Clark’s “Don’t Sleep in the Subway”, you will note that her voice goes to certain places, that it falls on certain grace notes, and that an orchestral arrangement was the obvious choice to support her voice. is kind of a sound is pure 1960s. ere are other 1960s styles, naturally, but the cadence of the voice in most songs from the 1960s tends to follow certain patterns. e same can be said for the very distinctive singing styles of the 1980s, the 1930s, or the 1950s. People imitate each other, and they also get inspired by the money that others are making by singing in a popular style. is leads me to the style of today. We live in a time when every style that has ever existed presently jangles together in the public ear, but through this, there is a specific and identifiable method of approach to the notes. is style oen involves halting vocals, and sailing the voice up to high notes here and there, to surprise. It oen involves falsetto singing that sounds like it has been recorded inside a large tin can. It is likely that Arcade Fire is at least partially to blame for this. A lot of people love to imitate Regina Spector, too. Each person who copies an original without innovating makes something a little less pure and wonderful. ere are a lot of bad and woefully derivative artists out there getting more press than they deserve. I like Whitehorse because they don’t sing this way. It’s not that they are imitating a style from the past, or trying to be retro. Yes, they have elements, flashes that recall a different era, but these elements are like small hints of familiar spice in a complex dish. It isn’t that they are some kind of historical archivist act. But it also isn’t that they are trying to cash in on bending their voices to sound contemporary. As opposed to the self-absorbed and difficult to hear lyrics one so oen hears in songs, songs that seem to have been written in a musical equivalent of the passive voice, Whitehorse offers gritty, straight ahead tunes that apologize for nothing. ey build their foundations on clean and staccato guitar riffs that go right to the body’s spine. Over this, the vocals and harmonies come in like intentional placements of sound. I like Whitehorse because they make music about doubt that is full of self-confidence. e spark between the players is obvious, and it is visible in their sound. Whitehorse is coming to Victoria on April 8th; Go see them.

When asked why he performs under the name White Buffalo, Jake Smith doesn’t have a clear answer. “I could be more than myself. Or not. Maybe it’s more mysterious.” Smith is even less certain about his style of music. “Rock. Folk. Country. And elements of roots.” And what about his latest album Shadows, Greys and Evil Ways , which follows the narrative of one man’s life? “ere was no specific person, I just wanted to write a longer narrative.” Despite the ambiguity of Smith’s character, his songwriting is succinct — each song is a mini tale of heartbreak, love, and murder. Shadows, Greys and Evil Ways focuses on a single narrative: the tale of a young man going off to war, returning home changed, and ultimately struggling to “assimilate back into normal society.” Aer six albums and 15 years in the business, the White Buffalo has learned what makes a memorable song. “Even at my most primitive songwriting, I’ve always explored the good and evil in people. I find we don’t write about the shadowy parts of life enough.” With track titles like “is Year” (upbeat yet wistful), “When I’m Gone” (reflective) and “e Getaway” (Bob Dylan-inspired), the White Buffalo requires more than one listen. Smith is quick to point out that not every song is dark — he does have a so side.

Smith brings his passion for lyrical storytelling to Victoria at the Upstairs Cabaret on March 23. But one stop of many on his Canadian tour, this tour is his longest to date. Expect new material, as Smith plans to road test songs from the upcoming album. “I’m touring solo this time and these shows are a more intimate experience. e performance is more about the songs, more about the words,” says Smith. “You still get the peaks and valleys and the emotional energy. A stripped-down, more animalistic White Buﬀalo.” Fans of FX’s Sons of Anarchy may recognize the White Buﬀalo’s signature country-drawl. His music has been heavily featured in the cable network’s breakout hit, including original compositions created for the series.

“I don’t write terribly radio friendly songs and so have that kind of access to fans and reach people I’d never reach, it’s really wonderful,” says Smith. e White Buffalo has also been featured on the Californication and Lone Ranger soundtracks. Despite the recent commercial success, Smith’s still focused on connecting with fans. He counts Canadian audiences as the most enthusiastic. So while the White Buffalo remains a mystery to himself, he does remember one key Victoria detail. “Big Bad John’s was my favourite bar.
