Season 2016-17

Journeys A journey to our mind is a jump from old habits and ideas to new experiences. This is why we travel so we can chase our indescribable dreams. It is a gamble, a bet, a take off to somewhere unknown but dreamt of. A leap to new worlds full of different peoples and different cultures, discoveries, perspectives and possibilities. AFTEC is a Learning TheatreTM and we make the connection for all those we meet through meaningful voyages they have never known before. Through the programmes in which they engage, we take them on expeditions to encounters, inspirations and reveries that we hope will empower them to change their thinking and perhaps even their lives. In Part 1 Engaging Participants, 24 individuals share their views on what journeys mean to them. In Part 2 Creating Theatre, we review the past season. Throughout, we aim to offer you a compendium of the arts and the positive impact they have on human lives. Our deepest appreciation and thanks to our Board of Directors for their belief in us and for their support for our work in 2016-2017; to our sponsors, partners and collaborators for turning our dreams into reality; and most of all, to our colleagues who have been so dedicated to the wanting, planning, executing and sharing the joy of arriving at multiple destinations together.

Bravo! Bravo! has proved to me that every action, every emotion as well as every connection we make on the stage, comes with preparation and hard work. This is evident not only on-stage, but also true in our everyday lives - schoolwork, exams, presentations...

To always keep learning and never be afraid to ask questions. As said by a LAMDA tutor Eleanor, “Be certain of the uncertainties.” I realised asking questions leads to true learning.

The journey is a process of enriching oneself —— at the start and end points of the various stages of life, you have many chances to gain knowledge and experience so that you can continue your journey with confidence.

Bravo!

Bravo! has shown me there is no end to learning. I am more willing to read and ask with a curious mind so as not to live in the dark. Through this detail-oriented learning journey, I was able to experience and improve various interpretations in acting. 16

Bravo!

To sum it up, it has been eye-opening and one-of-a-kind. I was mentored by passionate theatre practitioners who have taught me valuable life lessons on top of theatrical techniques. Bravo! ’s personalised education that I received from people with different backgrounds showed me how arts shaped me into a better person.

Bravo!

Bravo! is a gutsy life-education programme. It is not a superficial, impractical and patched-up programme with airs. Bravo! led my growing kids to explore life’s many paths without being suffocated by our stifling education system. This programme offered positive values and mutual benefits to all. It widened my youngsters’ vision and yet reminded them not to lose sight of their roots, to look after their families, the elderly, the weak and to contribute back to society. As the Chinese saying goes, “Even those who dine together like family, each work at their own spiritual salvation”. I hope these young people will learn the greater truth by taking baby steps.

AFTEC’s Poet-in-Education initiative challenged me to focus my writing on something specific, in this case theatre, and to build from the topic outwards. Usually I write in a way where I'll string words or lines together and then shape it towards a focal point. Starting from a focal point, and one with which I'm not very familiar, was an interesting challenge. My writing journey with AFTEC has influenced me deeply and made me a better, more versatile writer.

Thanks to the Poet-in-Education project, I have met people and students from all walks of life. Some were medical undergraduates, others were autistic children or students with learning difficulties. They inspired me and made me realise that children with different abilities have their own thoughts and desires to perform, and unleash their potential. 21

Like a seed, Sm-ART Youth Project is a long-term project. When you have three long years of exposure to different art forms, these seeds are well positioned. Their quality and interest will dictate the pace of growth and flowering time. There will be at least one art form that will stimulate their potential and talent. 24

Over the years, we have been delivering programmes on one level. In reality, we have also been researching, questioning, collecting data, analysing, adjusting and evolving a hypothesis that will support our artsin-education work with young people. We wish to make a case that the arts, when taken seriously, recognised for their innate power and worked on at a steady, sustained pace, are fundamental to personal growth and transformation. Below is the Theory of Change that we first published in a compact booklet entitled Arts Change Lives Social Impact Assessment in 2016. It is in this over-arching context that you may wish to read Part 2 of this report, or re-read Part 1 again.

When young people regularly and continuously REFLECT and ASK QUESTIONS, they become INTROSPECTIVE and understand the self better IN RELATIONS TO OTHERS.

They are more involved in COGNITIVE & SOCIAL EXPERIENCES AUTHENTICALLY, not just going through motions mechanically.

They are more able to PROBLEM-FIND before they solve problems & see from DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES, without the rush for instant results.

32

Over time, young people redefine success & failure, REDUCING THE FEAR OF TAKING RISKS and becoming more motivated.

Their COMMITMENT & PERSEVERANCE increase resulting in clearer direction and PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION.

Becoming a doctor is a tough but meaningful journey as the role allows me to reflect on what professionalism means when facing different patients at different times. Before this workshop, I thought it was just the doctors that healed the patients. Working as an ensemble, rather than in a solo part, is not only more fun but also challenges me more as a performer because I am tested on how well I am able to change and adapt to a new role.

It was the first time that I was surrounded by so many like-minded people who were passionate about the arts and held the same values of love, respect and open-mindedness. Playing can give us great insight into creativity. We played with lots of everyday objects in order to become more sensitive to our body movements in our training. If we do not apply what we have learnt and use it to compose a piece, then this work will remain as just training, and not a new way to convey a message. We had to learn to use this new knowledge as a personal resource.

We work as an ensemble and as a team. We rely and depend on each other. Someone else’s line or action will be the cue of mine. That’s why we have to know each other well and to pass the ball fluently and beautifully. The energy mustn’t drop.

We went to the National Theatre to experience various effects created by different stages. My eyes widened as I saw different connections between audience members and actors from a multitude of angles.

Experiences with the humanities teach us how to imagine other worlds. But they offer so much more than that. Because when we can fully imagine other worlds — using cultural knowledge and explanations for our human experience — we inevitably develop a more acute perspective on our own world. We learn to see when models and financial innovations are diverging from the truth. We recognise patterns . . . that shed light on insights and, ultimately, help us form a gigantic perspective. And perspectives, in the long run, always prove far more profitable — to both your bank account and your life — than confinement in a cage of data. (Madsbjerg, 2017:xx-xxi).
