En medio de la tiranía estalinista, la madre de Leelo, una niña de seis años, es enviada a un campo de prisioneros. Perseguida por las últimas palabras de su madre en las que le decía que fuera una buena niña, Leelo jura portarse lo mejor posible en el confuso mundo de los adultos con la esperanza de que se le devuelva su madre.
