National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) is celebrated nationwide each November. The purpose of this day is to recognize the great contributions of those people active in the philanthropic community. This year we have incorporated the Awards Ceremony into our Annual Regional Philanthropy Conference. As we honor individuals and organizations for their excellence and achievements, we are certain they will inspire not only the Conference attendees, but each and every one of us who are lucky enough to attend. OUTSTANDING CORPORATION AWARD CITY NATIONAL BANK Linda Duncombe Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing, Product and Digital Officer of City National Bank Linda Duncombe is executive vice president and chief marketing, product and digital officer of City National Bank. Linda leads a team that is responsible for advancing the company’s brand and digital strategy, articulating its value proposition and supporting business development. Linda oversees marketing, client experience, advertising and communications, as well as digital channels, product development, credit cards and multicultural outreach. She is also responsible for the bank’s technology innovation team, which identifies and deploys fintech solutions for City National and its clients. Linda is a member of the company’s Executive Committee and reports to Chief Executive Officer Kelly Coffey. She also serves as co-chair of the bank’s Women’s Network and chair of the bank’s LGBTQ Alliance. In 2021, 2020 and 2019, Linda was named to Variety’s list of the most powerful women in Hollywood, and she was recognized as one of the most influential women in banking by the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2021 and 2020. Linda was also named in the Top Teams in American Banker’s most powerful women in banking in 2021. Linda serves on the boards of Broadway Cares, the Grammy Museum, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles and EvoNexus. OUTSTANDING PRIVATE FOUNDATION AWARD STILETTOS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION Nanci Christopher Principal Nanci Christopher is an actress and playwright. She performed her solo show, “AND BABY MAKES TWO – an adoption tale” at the Santa Monica Playhouse for over three months. Nominated for the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Published by Samuel French. Invited guest at the Humana Festival at The Actors Theatre of Louisville and the O’Neill National Playwrights’ Conference in Connecticut. Currently an Associate Member of Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, California. Nanci’s new solo show, “ONE MINUTE OF HAPPINESS – a tale of sisterhood and baking” is a poignant, tragic and often humorous account of her relationship with her severely bi-polar sister, Gloria. Each story flows naturally into the next as Nanci and her family try to survive the upheaval of Gloria’s illness as it rips apart any semblance of normal family life. It is also a story of redemption and healing through the sisters’ attempt to stay connected via their shared passion for baking. Nanci began the Sugar & Stilettos Charitable Foundation over ten years ago as a way to combine her artistic talents with her philanthropic heart and to continue the legacy of giving back she learned from her beloved Dad Murray Neidorf. As a single mom, Nanci could not imagine the desperation she would feel if she could not feed her son. After much research, she chose the Westside Food Bank to be the beneficiary of her efforts to feed as many women, children and families as possible in her own community. To date, the Sugar & Stilettos Charitable Foundation has raised and disbursed over $600,000 to the Westside Food Bank and provided over 2.4 MILLION MEALS…OOH LA LA as we like to say at S&S!


OUTSTANDING NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION AWARD ST. VINCENT MEALS ON WHEELS Veronica Dove CEO/Executive Director of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels of City National Bank Veronica Dover is the CEO/Executive Director of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. Veronica is a seasoned nonprofit executive with 28 years of nonprofit management experience. She has experience in many different types of human services including behavioral health, nutrition, early childhood development, adult day care, senior services, the management of community and senior centers, senior housing programming, communitybased services, child abuse prevention and collaborative community engagement. Veronica holds a master’s degree in psychology and a certificate in aging. She has been the CEO/Executive Director of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels since October of 2018. Prior to her current position, Veronica was the Chief Operating Officer for Family Service Association, a large multi-service nonprofit located in the Inland Empire, where she served for close to 25 years. There are over 250,000 seniors facing hunger insecurity in Los Angeles and many of them are isolated and homebound. St. Vincent Meals on Wheels delivers over 100,000 nutritious meals a month to homebound seniors and other vulnerable residents across Los Angeles, regardless of age, illness, disability, race, religion, or ability to pay. For many, St. Vincent Meals on Wheels is a lifeline. The Covid-19 pandemic presented added challenges for local seniors who were isolated and on lockdown. St. Vincent Meals on Wheels quickly responded, adding service to hundreds of people who needed meals . The organization also added daily breakfast and snacks for those with no other way to get food. Dedicated volunteers connected with clients over the phone to check on them and ease their loneliness providing a lifeline wellness checks in addition to meals. Despite the challenges of mobilizing staff and volunteers during the pandemic, St. Vincent Meals on Wheels delivered nearly a million meals to the homebound and hungry of Los Angeles in 2020 and is set to exceed that number in 2021.

SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY AWARD GUADALUPE RADIO Dr. René Heredia Executive Director Created in 2005, Guadalupe Radio is a nonprofit radio station committed to inform, entertain and educate in human values. Guadalupe Radio reaches an audience that includes migrants and underserved communities from Santa Clarita, California to Tijuana, Mexico. It is a comforting resource and faithful companion in good and bad times because it addresses problems community members face in their daily lives. The station provides content entirely in Spanish from psychologists, family counselors, pastors, motivators, and experts in personal development. In addition to a commitment to improving people’s lives, Guadalupe Radio is also active in supporting communities in time of need. In 2018, the station donated over $92,000 USD to Catholic Charities assisting children separated from their families at the border. In 2017, the station donated $227,000 USD to the Red Cross to help the many families affected by the earthquake in Mexico City. Under the leadership of Dr. René Heredia, Guadalupe Radio modernized the radio and TV studios as well as the chapel with state-of-the-art technology that allows the organization to broadcast formative visual radio content, podcasts and video series. Using the skills learned in over two decades of business management, strategy and organizational change, Dr. Heredia came to the station with a vision for the future and got the support of numerous donors to start the process of digital transformation. Today, Guadalupe Radio has one of the most innovative digital platforms capable of streaming content through mobile (iOS/Android) and TV applications (Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV & Google TV) as well as a new website that enhances the listener experience. Its expansive and unique programming, dedicated audience in California, digital platforms plus its social media presence with over four million followers, make it one of the most relevant Spanish language radio stations in the country and a leader in the digital age.

Stacy Palmer has served as a top editor at the Chronicle of Philanthropy since it was founded in 1988 and has overseen the development of its website, Philanthropy.com. She plays a hands-on role in many Chronicle services, such as its Philanthropy Today daily newsletter and its webinar series offering professional development for people involved in fundraising, grant seeking, advocacy, marketing and social media. Palmer has appeared frequently on radio and television to offer commentary on news in the nonprofit world. She is the editor of Challenges for Philanthropy and Nonprofits, a book published by the University Press of New England that collects three decades of observations by the nonprofit activist and Chronicle columnist Pablo Eisenberg. Before she helped found the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Palmer was editor for government and politics at the Chronicle of Higher Education. She is a graduate of Brown University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations. She has been an active alumna, serving on numerous alumni boards, including chairing the Brown Alumni Magazine and is now a member of the university’s Women’s Leadership Council.

Calvin Chan has cultivated relationships with High Net Worth individuals and families for over fifteen years as an investment and philanthropy advisor. Ten of those years were in the real estate, finance, and banking sectors. He brings traditional for-profit training, experience, and an approach into the non-profit sector that has increased the average gift, retention, and total major donors for the largest homeless services agencies in Los Angeles County.

Part of the field of higher education since 2007, Mooney transitioned from student development to fundraising early in her career. Having worked at Fordham University, where she earned her masters of art, Columbia Law, USC, Cedars-Sinai, and now LMU, also her alma mater, Mooney is dedicated to cultivating philanthropy that helps create the next generation of diverse leaders. As a first-generation college student and the daughter of Central American immigrants, she knows firsthand the transformational power higher education offers. In her current role, Mooney oversees all fundraising efforts for LMU’s College of Communication and Fine Arts, partnering with the Dean, academic leaders, and external partners, including various dedicated boards. Mooney’s extensive experience allows her to deepen relationships with a strategic and thoughtful approach to continue raising support for scholarships, programs, capital, and endowment needs.

Zahra Nealy is a relationship-driven healthcare public relations and communications professional with specialties in media relations, development and donor communications, nonprofits and community outreach/relations. She’s worked on behalf of local and national public-affairs initiatives and nonprofit organizations including the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA and Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Nealy is currently the development communications specialist at Cedars-Sinai. She is the recipient of PR Daily’s 2017 Digital PR & Social Media Awards - Best Multichannel Campaign of the Year: “Wage Hope Together” for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Nealy has a BA in anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles and an MA in strategic public relations from USC Annenberg.

Jai Phillips manages and implements CCF’s public-private partnership with the Los Angeles County Probation Department, along with the Foundation’s youth development and boys and men of color portfolios, in order to advance CCF’s vision and goals and provide youth and families with culturallyresponsive, asset-based, high-quality resources and opportunities that create successful pathways to adulthood. Previously, Phillips managed CCF’s BLOOM (Building a Lifetime of Options and Opportunities for Men) initiative, an effort to redirect South Los Angeles’ justice-impacted Black male youth toward improved educational and employment opportunities. The BLOOM Alliance now stands firmly as a community resource to serve youth throughout L.A. County. A lifelong South Los Angeles resident with a proven history of community involvement, Phillips is committed to changing the trajectory of children and youth through a comprehensive approach that addresses their multifaceted needs. Prior to joining CCF, he served as regional development officer for Children’s Defense Fund-California, where he led the organization’s strategies for developing relationships and partnerships to achieve fundraising goals. He also served for nine years as development and operations manager for the Jackie Robinson Foundation, responsible for providing scholarships, mentoring and leadership opportunities for underserved youth. Phillips studied at Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in both psychology and Black studies.s.

David has over 30 years of experience providing day-to-day leadership and strategic oversight at three successful marketing firms that he founded. David works closely with both staff and agency clients, providing hands-on account management and creative guidance on communications that range from identity development, advertising, and marketing communications to the full gamut of digital and social media communications. David has enjoyed partnering with a wide range of clients from start-ups to nonprofits, and the Fortune 500 across myriad categories. David is the cofounder of Perceptiv, a full service, integrated communications firm based in Pasadena. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, David went on to further hone his skills at the Art Center College of Design, Otis Parsons Institute, and WSAAA workshops.

WELLNESS FACILITATOR Dr. Zerri Gross Whole Life Coach, Greater Self Dr. Zerri (Dr. Z) Gross is a Veteran business owner of Greater Self LLC® and Dr. Zerri Gross Family Counseling Inc. Through Greater Self LLC® Dr. Z is certified to provide trauma informed yoga, guided meditation, whole life coaching for leaders and business owners, and mindful facilitation of diversity, inclusion, and racism. Dr. Z provides workshops and trainings for agencies and organizations to support their goals for wellness, diversity, and mindset for productivity. Dr. Z also provides psychotherapy through Dr. Zerri Gross Family Counseling Inc as a licensed marriage and family therapist for individuals, families, and adolescents with a focus on anxiety, mild to moderate depression, ADHD, OCD, life transitions, performance improvement, and PTSD. Dr. Z has been providing services to the community for over 10 years in her personal businesses and through community agencies. Dr. Z is dedicated to doing the work to improve herself so she can continue to show up for others in multiple capacities to support others on their journey to their Greater Self.

SPECIAL GUEST PRESENTER Lynne Thompson Healthcare Public Relations and Communications Professional Lynne Thompson is the 2021-2022 Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, her poetry collections include Beg No Pardon (2007), winner of the Perugia Press Prize and the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award; Start With A Small Guitar (2013), from What Books Press; and Fretwork (2019), winner of the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize. Thompson’s honors include the Tucson Festival of Books Literary Award (poetry) and the Stephen Dunn Prize for Poetry as well as fellowships from the City of Los Angeles, Vermont Studio Center, and the Summer Literary Series in Kenya. Her work has appeared in Ploughshares, Poetry, Poem-A-Day (Academy of American Poets), New England Review, Colorado Review, Pleiades, Ecotone, and Best American Poetry, to name a few. A lawyer by training, Thompson sits on the boards of the Los Angeles Review of Books and Cave Canem and is the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Scripps College, her alma mater. She facilitates private workshops, most recently for Beyond Baroque, Poetry By the Sea Conference, Moorpark College Writers Festival, and Central Coast Writers’ Conference. Thompson is a native of Los Angeles, California, where she resides. .
