Bendigo Community Bank Vic Country vs VAFA The WorkSafe AFL Vic Country side has fallen short in the 2017 Brian Molony Cup against the VAFA after going down by 82 points at Frankston Oval on Saturday. The Vic Country side were unable to contain the extreme running ability of their metro rivals and were outclassed around the ball, leading to a comfortable 24.8 (152) to 10.10 (70) score line. Rochester Football Club’s Steven Stroobants finished with four goals for Vic Country while teammate Chris Moreland kicked two in what was a tough day at the office for the country side. Captain Jack Geary lead from the front all day while North Shore’s Jason Davenport was sensational in a best on ground performance for Vic Country but was overshadowed by a very challenging VAFA outfit. In his first game as head coach, Danny Frawley said he was proud of how his boys played but recognised that the VAFA side was better on the day. “You could see that the VAFA really came in with a plan and executed it perfectly,” he said. “Our guys had a dip but there is no way we can polish it up, they were far too good. “We’ve got two years to lick our wounds and do a fair bit of training but we’ll be back better and stronger than ever.” It was a different story for Vic Country in the Under 19 Challenge Cup with the Energy Safe Under 19 squad defeating VAFA by four points. In wet and greasy conditions at Frankston Oval, the very best young talent from country Victoria held off a fast finishing VAFA outfit in what was an outstanding display of skill and class from both sides. The final score: 9.13 (67) to 9.9 (63).
A goal from St. Joeseph’s Jackson McLachlan halfway through the last-term gave the Vic Country side a comfortable 29-point lead before an onslaught led by VAFA sharpshooter Alessandro Mastromanno brought his side back to almost pip the country side on the siren. Karingal’s Jake Kelly was extraordinary up forward, booting two while having an incredible presence in the forward half, while Shepparton’s Luke Smith popped up for two of his own to help starve off a gallant VAFA side. Vic Country captain Shaun Mannagh electrified the midfield in a best on ground performance while Shaun Downie, Matthew LaFontaine and Jack Blood were solid contributors for Vic Country’s fourth consecutive Under 19 Challenge Cup win.
