A LEGEND FROM THE

MASTER CRAFTSMEN

To mark 90 years of the finest craftsmanship, Montblanc launched a series of its Meisterst端ck Collection including a brand new collection of timepieces.

35

Montblanc unveiled its Meisterstück Heritage Collection, a new line of watches inspired by the spirit of the Montblanc Meisterstück, the legendary fountain pen which was launched 90 years ago. Distinguished by masterly craftsmanship, timeless design and perfect functionality, these timepieces feature classical design, discriminating complications and sumptuous decorations, manifesting the values of the Montblanc Meisterstück and the traditional features of fine Swiss watchmaking. Set to impress every watch connoisseur, the Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Collection features faceted hands in the classical dauphine shape, which sweep over silver-white dials. This is one of the many features that showcase the mastery of the finest craftsmanship in the tradition of Swiss watchmaking as the manufacture of dauphine hands is extremely challenging -- the clear geometry, straight contours and perfectly smooth flanks would instantly reveal even the tiniest flaw in their manufacturing or assembly. Other elaborate features include the hour circle which combines polished faceted appliqués in three different lengths and an eye-catching applied Roman numeral “XII”. Various finishings on the surfaces such as horizontal satin finishing on the middle piece are seen on the classical shape of the 39 or 41-mmdiameter case. In addition, the crown adorned with Montblanc’s emblem is polished, raised relief against a matte sand-blasted background.

A highlight of this collection is the Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Pulsograph. It pays tribute to the achievement of Minerva Manufacture, the direct ancestor of the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret, which had produced one of the first chronograph calibres for wristwatches in 1923. The chronograph was equipped with pulsometer scales, described as precise measurers of brief intervals which were popular among physicians. Calibrated for 30 pulse beats, a pulsometer scale enables a doctor to read the pulse rate per minute without having to continue feeling the patient’s pulse for a full sixty seconds.

These elaborate features distinguish all models in the Meisterstück Heritage Collection including the classical three-handed wristwatch with date display, the elegant moon-phase watch and grandes complications such as a perpetual calendar and a mono pusher chronograph.

The Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Pulsograph is fitted with a contemporary chronograph movement (Montblanc Calibre MB M13.21) which was developed and manually manufactured in-house, finely adjusted in accord with the principles of the traditional art of Swiss watch making. IMAGES COURTESY OF MONTBLANC | WRITTEN BY SANDY LEE

36

AFFLUENT timepiece

It boasts a combination of classical construction of a mono pusher chronograph with the artisanal manual finishing and decoration of the highest standards. Its hand finished Minerva arrows can be admired through the sapphire crystal case while the pulsometer scale along the dial’s periphery is shown on the outer edge of the dial. The chronograph’s central elapsed seconds hand is made using blue steel. A coating of red gold embellishes the hour and minute hands and the applique hour markers perfectly harmonise with the 18 karat red gold of the 41-mm-diameter case. A Montblanc diamond, cut and polished to form the emblem of the Maison, is inset into the middle piece of the case at “6 o’clock”. In addition, components of the movement are lavishly finished. The plate and bridges are fabricated from rhodium-plated nickel silver; the bridges are bevelled by hand, and these chamfered surfaces are then manually polished. Available in a black alligator-skin strap with large reptilian scales, the Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Pulsograph is limited to 90 timepieces.

In celebration of the 90th anniversary since it launched the Meisterstück iconic writing instrument, Montblanc showcased the finest European craftsmanship, exhibiting rare heritage pieces, a unique selection of leather goods and meticulously crafted timepieces amongst its iconic Meisterstück collection at a transformed Civic Plaza at Ngee Ann City, Singapore in August 2014. The Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Collection is available in Montblanc boutiques worldwide. + www.montblanc.com

AFFLUENT rocks

For the very first time in the world, contemporary model sports cars which are carved out of Burmese jadeite are now made available to sports cars enthusiasts, collectors of rare artifacts and jade lovers. Each unique jade car is a 95% accurate replica of the real life version (size ratio is 1:18) and each is specially hand-crafted by the renowned Thailand-based jade craftsman, Pibolsak, whose mastery of the craft is given royal recognition and appreciation when he was asked to do a carved replica of the Emerald Buddha for His Majesty, King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. This special edition of rare jadeite has just been launched by Genesis-Global which has established itself as a private jewellery atelier which gives total privacy and confidentiality to its customers. The company offers advice to customers who are looking for alternative investments and to beef up their investment portfolio. Genesis-Global is headed by Kelvin Tan, who has been a collector of precious stones and jewellery for more than 16 years. “I am probably the first lawyer-turnedjeweller in the history of Singapore,” said Kelvin, a former legal eagle who combines his knowledge and experience in law, financial instruments and passion for collecting precious gems to provide insights of

such investment opportunities to savvy investors. “I founded my company, Genesis-Global, together with my brother Dennis Tan, to focus on my passion in precious gems as a real and highly lucrative alternative investment. My passion drives me to attract many sophisticated investors who are looking to diversify their investment portfolio beyond the conventional types of investments.” Genesis-Global which also has business interests in Hong Kong, has its own research and studies on the various stones and the trends in the global market to better advice customers. It not only provides jewellery but also deals in the rare premium stones themselves including coloured diamonds, chameleon diamonds, unheated rubies and sapphires from Burma which are limited in supply. Its customers include those who are top professionals to business leaders and savvy private collectors and investors comprising private high/ultra high net-worth individuals as well as corporations. A purveyor of rare and exquisite investment-grade gems and jewellery, Genesis-Global offers this series of limited handcrafted Burmese jadeite painstakingly carved into model sports cars such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. Jadeite carvings for fashion accessories such as belts are also available.

39

Conceptualised in February 2014, these specially custom-made pieces are made from natural Burmese ‘Type A’ Black and White Jadeite which are highly valued because of its rarity and beautiful colours. However, due to the limited supply of good quality Burmese jadeite, production of such exquisite jade cars is limited. Special orders for jade cars are all customized and are now available in different colours of jadeite (e.g. Lavender Jade or Green Jade) which are made according to the preference of customers. Its rarity made them attractive not only to collectors but also as an investment option that appeals to well heeled customers who look for gems for its appreciation value. Ideal as investment, they are also seen as potential family heirloom that can be passed on as inheritance. Such unique pieces are highly recommended to those who are looking for alternative forms of investment as it can serve to protect wealth from inflationary pressure. Who says cars can only be made out of metal? Jade cars can now be a man’s new toy! In fact, they are surely conversational pieces that will grace the desktops of the privileged few, whose discernment for the finer things in life had led them to their special place of success in the first place. +

All About Cars

AMOS MOK’s love for cars has turned into a multi faceted business that has expanded to become a very integral part of his life.

Amos Mok, co-founder of Juzz For Cars, is a man who loves everything about cars. His passion for cars started as a young boy and today the company has won several awards, some of which are the Singapore Entrepreneurs Award 2013, Asia Pacific Brands Award 2013 and the most recent 2014 Most Outstanding Enterprise. In 1999, Amos and his partner, Billy, launched Juzz For Cars. “We started as a four member team (including ourselves) and covered car repairs, servicing and maintenance. I did everything from the operations to buying of spare parts and typing of invoices,” recalls Amos. The company today has a staff of 25 people working in four workshop units encompassing maintenance, servicing and upgrades, repairs, QC checks, body-paint work, polishing and a used car department. It all started when Amos joined Performance Motors after 11 years of service with the Singapore Navy. His short stint at Performance Motors motivated

© AMOS MOK

him to start his own business. “I learned quite a lot from Performance Motors and adopted some of the standard operation procedures which I modified to suit the operations at Juzz For Cars.” Juzz For Cars was one of the few workshops that kept track of customers’ car history. “We are able to trace what has been done for the car from day one.” He also pointed out, “When we started 15 years ago, it was rare to wash and vacuum the interior of cars as standard practice when it was sent for servicing but we were already doing it,” he says. Success of his business is attributed to hard work, the ability to keep up with technological advances and exceeding customers’ expectations. “I have benchmarked our services to what I as a car owner would like to see being done; it is always about paying attention to details. In the past, before I started Juzz For Cars, I dreaded collecting my car after servicing because sometimes you see black grease smeared on the seat or steering wheel. At our service centre, we use plastic covers on the seats and floor besides protecting the steering wheel with a wrap when we do the servicing so that the cars will remain as clean and pristine as possible. We try our best to meet our customers’ expectations and if possible to go beyond.” Juzz For Cars has since become known for its specialization with BMWs and has added Minis and Porsches into the foray. “We have a niche market. For example, BMWs are known for its advanced technology. New advances are made regularly. This means that our equipment to do the diagnosis of the car will be outdated after a few years. To keep up, we need to upgrade our equipment constantly as well as our knowledge about the new cars.”

41

Right Amos Mok loves everything about cars and is co-founder of Juzz For Cars which has won several awards, including the Singapore Entrepreneurs Award 2013, Asia Pacific Brands Award 2013 and the most recent 2014 Most Outstanding Enterprise.

For Amos, the most enjoyable part of his work today is meeting customers who have become good friends. “I am happy when a customer gives me a free hand and the opportunity to completely transform a car into something beyond his expectation. The look of a customer’s face and his expression when he sees the car is just priceless. It gives me great satisfaction.” Interestingly, Amos reveals that he led an incredibly disciplined routine as a child. As a national swimmer, he trained in the pool at 5:45am every morning, went to school and returned to the pool at 4:30pm before going home for dinner and ending his day at 7:30pm. He kept to this routine till he was in his teens.

Naturally, he still swims three times a week and participates in international swimming competitions at the Masters’ level around the world. “There are a few people that I am thankful for to be where I am today. Firstly, my father. He has been a great influence in my life. In fact, it was his craze about cars that rubbed off on me. We used to play games about cars which fuelled my interest to discover everything there is to know about cars. He has this mantra: What is easy to achieve is never worth achieving.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Exxon Mobil for giving Juzz For Cars their endless support the past 15 years. We would not be where we are today and become one of the top Mobil 1 Car Care Centres in Singapore without their support.” Amos dreams of taking Juzz For Cars to a whole new level one day: “Everything car related under one roof complete with a café where our customers can sit and chat with fellow car fanatics about their cars and show them off at the same time.” +

COACH

Old House, New Guard The new fall/winter season brings a new crop of young designers to the fore, having taken the creative reins at storied fashion house.

LOEWE Taking over the creative reins from Stuart Vevers since last September, Jonathan Anderson - better known as JW to many of his fans - has overseen a revamp of the historic house. They include creating fresh new logos and creating new packaging for his forthcoming leather-goods collection. Known for his edgy androgynous looks for his own namesake label, the 30-year-old London-based Irish designer debuted his men’s line in February to critical acclaim. Fresh designs include asymmetrically cut cotton shirts and body-hugging knitted tops. But, despite Anderson’s distinct fashion handwriting, loyal fans need not worry as there are still plenty of classic pieces that will not alienate existing customers. They include outerwear constructed from the most supple of leather as well as tailored suede coats. LOUIS VUITTON The fashion world was set abuzz last year when it was announced that Nicolas Ghesquiere was named as the new creative director at Louis Vuitton. He takes over the creative reins from popular American designer Marc Jacobs, who left the company to focus on his own namesake label. Ghesquiere, 43, moved to Vuitton after surrendering his position as creative director at iconic French fashion house, Balenciaga His debut fall/winter 2014 womens collection, which was shown in Paris in

March, was well-received by fashion critics. Ghesquiere presented jackets with chunky square collars reminiscent of the 1960s, raised hemlines as well edgy-yet-feminine cocktail dresses. In terms of leather goods, the Parisbased designer presented cute miniature versions of an old-fashioned suitcase, referring to Vuitton’s heritage as a luggage label, which will no doubt be one of the season’s most covetable It bags. COACH As the newly installed executive creative director at Coach, Stuart Vevers unveiled the American label’s first ready-towear collection at the fall/winter 2014 presentations during New York Fashion Week earlier this year. In 19 outfits, the 40-year-old, who left Loewe after a five-year tenure, neatly dissected chic and cosy duffle coats in tan wools that recalled the furs of teddy bears. There was also patchwork sheepskin coats and cute short skirts constructed from wool and replete with rivet details. The bags, which the label is known for, are also richer in detail. For instance, one of the It bags from the label is called The Ryder, named after the American actress Winona Ryder. The soft, top handle bag features external pockets and looks to become a commercial hit for the American company. +

Fountain of Youth Fight the hands of time with the all-in-one V10 Plus Bio Cell Serum – a best selling favourite designed to reverse the unwanted signs of aging by lifting, firming and hydrating your skin, while also preventing melanin production for a fairer complexion.

There is no question that guarding against external environmental stressors is essential in protecting your face from the effects of extrinsic aging, such as photodamage. Yet, all the sunscreens and moisturisers in the world would do little to counter the unavoidable: the natural process of biological aging. ALL-IN-ONE ANSWER TO AGING With the passing of time, one’s skin tissues are bound to suffer from a decline in the rates of epidermal stem cell renewal as well as collagen production, leading to the diminishing of the skin’s health and overall appearance. Working at the DNA level, V10 Plus Bio Cell Serum has been formulated to repair cell damage caused by this process, while stimulating the production and growth of collagen and fibronectin – two crucial components of healthy skin that rapidly drop in levels as we age. THE BEAUTY OF STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY Housed in a fresh pink bottle among the spectrum of V10 Plus’ eleven trademark serums, the Bio Cell Serum comes in a new and improved formula infused with stem cell technology. Its eight different active ingredients include the highly Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture

Extract, which serves as the most fundamental element of all. Plant stem cells, which have the ability to regenerate just as human stem cells do, are extracted from apples and incorporated to boost the skin’s longevity and suppleness. A COCKTAIL OF MIRACLE INGREDIENTS Also present is Rosa Damascena Flower Extract to stimulate and hydrate the skin, along with Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract for its antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties to soothe even the most sensitive of skin types. Honey is added to help protect skin from the sun’s rays, due to its anti-microbial properties and natural antioxidants. By facilitating the skin’s ability to rejuvenate, it leaves your skin’s surface soft and silky to the touch for a refreshed-looking face. As a result, each drop counteracts fine lines and wrinkles by inducing a lifting effect; firms and moisturises; as well as reduces redness to produce a fairer and more even skin tone. Used religiously by celebrities such as Fann Wong and even the CEO and Founder of V10 Plus, Akiko Yokota, you can trust the V10 Plus Bio Cell Serum to ensure that time is, indeed, on your side. + Available at selected beauty retail outlets and salons. www.v10plus.co.jp Left The V10 Plus Bio Cell Serum comes in two bottle sizes of 10ml and 30ml.

Defining The Ideal “S-Line” Of The Face

67

Dr. Kim, Byung Gun of BK Plastic Surgery Hospital, the world’s largest plastic surgery hospital, shares with AFFLUENT readers the latest trend in Korean plastic surgery of desiring the perfect “S-line” for the face.

In the past, many of my clients were mainly concerned about their front facial features, where a balanced symmetry and attractive expression were seen as the ideal beauty. Of late, I have seen many clients who requested to look more beautiful from the side of their faces, not only just the front. This attractive facial curve from the side of the face is what I call the “S-line”, similar to the ideal type of body shape. When other people look at you from the side of your face, they recognize you by the “S-line” which starts from the top of the head to the forehead, nose, lips and ends at the bottom of the chin. To achieve a more natural and beautiful “S-line”, clients usually opted for a forehead augmentation surgery. However, the ratio proportion of nose to the face also plays an important role in obtaining the ideal “S-line”. As a rule of thumb, the ideal nose proportion should be around one third of the face, must not be too big or smaller than the ideal size. Together with an appropriate height of the nose bridge which is in good harmony with the overall “S-line”, a person could look so much more different and attractive. To achieve the ideal “S-line”, it is important to examine the side of the face carefully. Most people will find it difficult to make a sound judgement

by just looking into the mirror. Therefore, I strongly recommend that people have sufficient consultation with the experts prior to the operation. Only after adequate consultations with me and our beauty consultants, will we be able to determine the best procedures to bring out the best results for my clients. It is my goal to help my clients realise their dreams and attain their ideal beauty. In return, they help to fulfill BK Hospital’s dream of being a leader in plastic surgery, and promoting the Korean Medical Tourism to the world. + For more information on plastic surgery at BK Plastic Surgery Hospital, please logon to www.bkhospital.com.

GILDED CAGE The world of Burlesque was the theme of the night when AFFLUENT teamed up with Damiani recently to showcase the latest collection of stunning jewellery from the Italian jewellery house. About 30 elite and wellheeled guests turned up at Damiani’s Scotts Square boutique to mingle and admire the masterpieces during a short fashion show with models parading the jewellery. One of the main highlights of the night was the manchette bracelet. The white gold piece, which recalls the structure and construction of corsets used in the Burlesque world, also featured either white and black diamonds or full black diamonds. +

INDULGENT SURPRISES

The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore exudes heritage and grandeur like no other, offering delightful surprises at every turn. Here, Catherine Ng discovers the perfect balance between setting and service – one that creates truly indulgent moments to remember.

83

Special occasions are made even more unforgettable at The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore, a majestic establishment that is completely built over water along the sparkling Marina Bay waterfront. Upon arriving via the Clifford Pier entrance, it is almost impossible not to stop and marvel at the oversized cylindrical chandelier that is suspended at a dramatic 10-metre height above the reception. Internationally sourced and specially commissioned art pieces from world-renowned French, Korean and Japanese artists grace the breathtaking interiors of the establishment throughout.

What you will find the most captivating, though, is the rich cultural and historic significance that is embodied by The Fullerton Bay Hotel – the result of efforts in redeveloping the historic Marina Bay Waterfront to capture elements of both the past and present. Among the hotel’s 100 rooms and suites are six exclusive, culturally themed suites positioned at the top three levels of the hotel, with unparalleled views of the dazzling Singapore skyline. MODERN HOMAGE TO A BYGONE ERA Measuring 78 square metres each, five of the suites are named after prolific former Governors of the Straits Settlements – namely Sir Hugh Clifford, Sir Shenton Thomas, Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson, Sir John Anderson and Major General Sir William Orfeur Cavenagh. Every suite represents a significant culture that has contributed to the progress of Singapore as a nation, and features bespoke décor that pay tribute to the historical significance of the hotel’s location. A sixth set of rooms that span a total of 150 square metres, the Presidential Suite, stands as an amalgamation of the ethnic cultures. RECREATING HISTORY WITH LUXURY Artwork, antiques, signature fabrics and decorative items within every one of the five themed suites have been painstakingly curated to accurately embody the Chinese, Malay, Indian, Peranakan and Colonial cultures which The Fullerton Bay Hotel seeks to depict.

Aside from a bespoke tropical floral scent that permeates the hotel, one is greeted with an overwhelming sense of luxury of the expansive 17-metre wide lobby, a masterpiece by Hong Kong based architect, Andre Fu. This celebrated design wunderkind is also responsible for four of the hotel’s dining destinations – The Landing Point, The Clifford Pier, Lantern and Clifford – each with an utterly unique sense of refinement. With elaborate amenities including 25-metre rooftop infinity pool overlooking Marina Bay and a round-the-clock gym offering the latest Technogym fitness equipment, The Fullerton Bay Hotel no doubt presents an experience that will pamper you to no end.

Catherine Ng, General Manager of AFFLUENT Magazine, had the pleasure of celebrating her birthday by enjoying a weekend staycation at the Robinson Suite (Suite 409). Named after Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson, governor of the Straits Settlements from 1877 to 1889, the suite’s interior is the very picture of chinoiserie chic. Stately ceramic urns, silk wall panels, and a hand-woven Chinese wall relief in the living room are just some of the unique decorative items that draw one into a lavish oriental journey back in time.

Thus, I was pleasantly surprised that when I stepped into the Robinson Suite to discover that the entire place had been decorated with colourful heart-shaped balloons especially for the occasion,” she enthuses. “There was even a personalised chocolate birthday cake with my name on it; a bottle of chilled PerrierJouët champagne coupled with light refreshments; and a pair of the signature Fullerton teddy bears decked out in Chinese wedding attire placed on my bed.” A second series of surprises followed on Sunday morning, when she discovered that a hotel staff had assisted Catherine’s friend in showing up at her room unannounced with a large bouquet of flowers. The blooms were later on arranged exquisitely within the suite while Catherine was out having breakfast at The Clifford Pier, the hotel’s recently launched destination restaurant. “I was greeted with a smile and addressed by my name throughout my entire stay, and every gesture from the staff and management of the hotel was so genuine and sweet,” recalls Catherine fondly. “Out of all the hotels that I have checked into, The Fullerton Bay Hotel has undoubtedly given me one of the best experiences.” + The Fullerton Bay Hotel 80 Collayer Quay Singapore 049326 Tel: +65 6222 8088 www.fullertonbayhotel.com

FIDUCIARY DUTY, DUTY OF FIDELITY AND CONFLICT OF INTERESTS You would be surprised if I told you that many people who occupy committee positions in voluntary and social organizations are unaware of, or unfamiliar with, their legal obligations including the fiduciary duty and duty of fidelity owed by them to the organization. This article is intended to enlighten or remind those of us who occupy committee positions in voluntary and social organizations, as many AFFLUENT readers do, of our legal obligations to the organizations that we serve as a volunteer. The law imposes a fiduciary duty on committee members of social and voluntary organizations who are in a position of trust and confidence. A fiduciary duty imposes a high standard of loyalty and selflessness in which the committee member must act in the organization’s interests even if the committee member has to sacrifice his own interests. Under a fiduciary duty, there is a duty of fidelity to: (a) act in good faith vis a vis the organization; (b) not make a profit out of his position of trust eg when negotiating with vendors and sponsors on behalf of the organization; (c) not act in conflict of interests eg champion his own interests at the expense of the organization’s interests; and (d) not act for his own benefit or another’s benefit instead of the organization’s benefit. These legal duties could make it awkward for an individual to concurrently hold committee positions in two organizations that compete for the same pool of members, vendors, sponsors, and organize similar social events for their respective members. For ease of reference, let’s call such an individual a “two-timer”. If the two-timer comes across a vendor or sponsor who only has enough budget to offer a sweet deal to the members of one organization, the two-timer would be in breach of his fiduciary duty and duty of fidelity owed to one organization if he swings the vendor or sponsor to the other organization. Or if the two-timer stumbles upon a brilliant idea for a one-of-a-kind exclusive event, he would again, breach his fiduciary duty and duty of fidelity to one organization if he gifts his brilliant idea to the other. Or if one organization wishes to do something which the other organization opposes, the two-timer would be caught between a rock and a hard place. These awkward circumstances that the two-timer has created for himself by occupying committee positions in two competing organizations puts him in a situation known legally as “conflict of interests”. The higher a position the two-timer occupies in one or both the organizations, the more serious the conflict of interests gets. If the two-timer’s fellow committee members do not know where his loyalties lie and whether or not he would poach their ideas, contacts, vendors, sponsors or deals for his other organization, the two-timer’s presence would cause unease, stir unrest, and create distrust among his fellow committee members. While the two-timer preserves his committee positions in both organizations concurrently, the two organizations should guard themselves against being drawn into any conflict, upset the live-and-letlive relationship between them, and not allow the unhappy situation to sow discord between the two organizations and their members. Unless an organization is so starved of candidates for committee positions, it would do well to steer clear of individuals who are committee members of competing organizations. On the part of individual volunteers, bearing in mind their fiduciary duty and duty of fidelity, they should not vie for a committee position in more than one competing organization at the same time. This article is intended to entertain, enlighten and educate. Any resemblances or similarities to any individuals or organizations are purely coincidental.

AFFLUENT moves

The McLaren Spider has gradually risen to a somewhat cult status among the legends of the sports motoring world. Its 650S incarnation bears a striking appearance that carves a niche among the hearts of motoring aficionados, no less than its sister models like the McLaren 12C and the McLaren P1. This dashing new stallion from the decorated motorsport titan takes its name from its power. 650PS is the power output of its cutting-edge M838T twin turbo V8 engine, while the ‘S’ in 650S is McLaren’s declaration of this offering being a strictly sporting endeavour.

Presented to an eagerly anticipating faithful at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the 650S Spider trailblazes the zero to hundred test with a timing of 3 seconds, a tenth of a second faster than the McLaren 12C, while a tad slower than the light-footed McLaren P1. 3 seconds is a commendable effort, considering that rival production car manufacturers the likes of Hennessey, SSC, Koenigsegg, Bugatti and newcomer Ariel are all in heated competition to break the 2 second barrier. The 650S Spider’s true power only manifests at the 8.4 seconds mark, when it blitzes the 200km/h mark.

All In Due Time The long-awaited 650S Spider is both a McLaren-style labour of love and show of force.

43

Also available as a Coupé for SGD1,150,000 before taxes and COE, the McLaren 650S Spider is yours for a cool SGD1,250,000. Both variants of the emphatic 650S clock almost identical performance statistics. The key ingredients to this speed freak’s capabilities include the incorporation of firmer McLaren springs, newly developed damper mounts, tough and dynamic ceramic brakes, Pirelli Corsa tyres and the implementation of McLaren’s powerful twin-clutch transmission. These industry-leading features make no compromise, coupling with a low chassis to dramatically increase the downward force of the 650S. The gripping new aesthetics of the 650S aren’t just superficial; its chassis is evolved from Formula One technology and plays an indispensible role in improving handling. Over the years, carbon-fibre chassis have become a signature McLaren trait,

which the Surrey-based carmaker now swears by. The carbon-fibre MonoCell is safer and more durable than those cast in traditional materials like aerospace-grade steel and aluminium, exhibiting vast improvements in performance, besides delivering a knockout look. Endowed with a distinguishing growl, the 650S touts impressive fuel economy figures: 24.2mpg and 275g/km. Its ride is bolstered by satellite navigation, DAB radio, rear parking cameras and a fully electric steering column. Hand-assembled in McLaren’s workshop, each Alcantara leather-trimmed beauty is customisable in McLaren’s recently expanded bespoke programme. The 650S Spider registers a top speed of 329km/h. The McLaren brand has always been about exclusivity; holding membership to a select group, and like the McLaren cars that have preceded it, the 650S is a love affair that can only begin in the eye of the beholder. + McLaren Singapore 45 Leng Kee Road Singapore159103 Tel: +65 6430 4888

AFFLUENT moves

The fruit of their labour:

an atypical Ferrari that shunts Ferrari’s conventionally flat and low CG structure, for a car with impeccable feel and unexpected agility.

Flaunting its own, albeit distinctively Ferrari, purr, the California T is eye-catching predominantly because it is one of Ferrari’s most daring swerves from looks that the Ferrari faithful are used to. Wielding a potent seventh gear that churns out a massive 755Nm of torque, the Ferrari California T is a bountiful improvement that boasts a 15% reduction in fuel consumption from its predecessor California model. Despite earth-friendly savings, this economical yet certainly uncompromising machine enjoys a 49% increase in power output from the Ferrari California.

ATHLETIC BODY Endowed with a muscular physique yet elegantly sleek, the aerodynamic Ferrari California T was recently debuted at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show. Sporting an off-kilter chassis designed by long-time collaborator Pininfarina, its flagrant flanks pay tribute to the celebrated pontoon fender styling of the 250 Testa Rossa. With the new Ferrari California T, amalgamating aerodynamics with aesthetics was the name of the game. To achieve this dreamy incarnation of the modern race car, the Italian icon’s world-class engineers worked intimately with acclaimed designers. The fruit of their labour: an atypical Ferrari that shunts Ferrari’s conventionally flat and low CG structure, for a car with impeccable feel and unexpected agility. Below Sprinting from 0 to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, the new Ferrari California T brandishes a state-ofthe-art V8 engine and an enhanced fourwheel drive system.

BIG BROTHER The new retainer of the Ferrari clan.

45

Additional air vents through the racy bonnet boost the efficiency of its front radiator, while the lower section of its bumper is prominently profiled to channel air into its coolers. Its curvaceous silhouette ends in the form of a triple-fence diffuser. BEAUTIFUL HEART When cruising, this limber stallion exudes a very much Grand Tourer type feel. Furthermore, three configurations, ski, golf and country, allow further customisation to one’s driving preferences. Armed with a capable four-wheel-drive system, the marquee highlight of the Ferrari California T has to be its direct-injection 3855cc V8 turbo engine. Not your run-of-the-mill V8 engine by a long shot, Ferrari’s new rendition of the powerful system sprints the Ferrari California T from zero to a hundred in 3.6

seconds. Ferrari’s unprecedented V8 engine further unleashes the potential of modern motoring science, with the help of a new steering box, new suspension setup, new springs and Magnaride dampers. CCM3 carbon-ceramic brakes couple with an elite ABS system and an ESP 8.0 Premium system, decreasing the Ferrari California T’s stopping distance to an extremely short 34m, when braking from 100 to 0 km/h. In terms of being able to tailor one’s vehicle to his or her whim and fancy, Ferrari leads the pack. Few sports car manufacturers can proclaim that their cockpits are hand-stitched from leather finer than that which Ferrari employs. Neither can many challenge the number of options that the highly bespoke Ferrari California T affords, including a sleek full-length glass roof that has enthralled many a motor racing enthusiast. + ITAL Auto Pte Ltd 30 Leng Kee Road Singapore 159100 Tel: +65 6475 1118 www.italauto.com.sg

AFFLUENT indulgence

Japan’s best loved Sichuan restaurant featuring the best of three generations of award-winning chefs delights gourmets at Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore. Singapore’s reputation as a gourmet paradise has been bolstered by the opening of Japan’s popular Sichuan restaurant chain, Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore.

ALL SPICED AND REFINED

48

The debut of Shisen Hanten has redefined the world of fine dining with its multimillion dollar interior which exudes modern oriental design juxtaposed against contemporary furnishing in hues of subtle gold and earthly tones. The elegant and contemporary feel of its ambience is highlighted by classic chandeliers perched from the ceiling. On the 35 storey of Mandarin Orchard Hotel, diners get a wonderful bird’s eye view of the city. Specially designed for those with exquisite taste, an extensive selection of dishes not only from Sichuan but also influences of Japan is offered. Service staff members are very well versed with the menu and most likely will recommend several of the chef’s most well known dishes including Mapo Doufu as it is a family recipe. However several dishes will tantalise even the most discerning gourmets. As a starter, a cold dish of boneless chicken served with Sichuan sauce, garnished with fresh slices of tomato and cucumber and topped with crashed cashew nuts is highly recommended. It was a refreshing way to whet an appetite as the chicken was not only tasty and tender but also added much zest with its spicy sauce. The chef’s Japanese influence is captured in several dishes. A must is the foie gras chawan mushi with crab roe soup. It was indeed very flavourful as the foie gras chawan mushi was added to the lightly starched soup coloured by the crab roe

topped with some crab meat. It was an excellent combination. Mastery in Sichuan dishes is also evident in two wonderful vegetable dishes – cabbage with sliced pork belly in Sichuan sauce and string beans with minced meat. The renowned Sichuan flavours of hot, spicy, salty were well orchestrated and the dishes go well with Hokkaido steamed rice. Indeed the finesse of skills is manifested with the desserts which were beautifully presented. The almond pudding was extra ordinarily smooth and its topping of three pieces of Chinese gooseberries added a touch of beautiful red. Another refreshing order was the aloe vera jelly with calamansi sherbet. You can finish the meal with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. What is most commendable is the attentive service. Staff members often keep a look out at different tables filling tea cups regularly and also ensuring that your plate is refilled. Besides ala carte menu, set lunch and dinner menus are also available. During lunch, the restaurant also offers an impressive selection of freshly made dim sum. + All images Enjoy the best of Sichuan dishes from three generations of awarding winning chefs in elegant and modern setting at Shisen Hanten.

Palate Pleaser – The Italian Way A great culinary adventure awaits gourmets at Buona Terra which delights with exceptional Italian cuisine and impressive service.

Dining at Buona Terra, a contemporary fine dining restaurant located at 29 Scotts Road, is almost like having your very own private kitchen. One of the few restaurants nestled among the row of colonial bungalows along Scotts Road, Buona Terra presents a highlycustomised menu that promises an unforgettable culinary experience in cosy ambience. At our recent visit, chef de cuisine Denis Lucchi impresses with his highly flexible menu and surprises with his versatility. He is supported by a highly personalised service headed by its chief sommelier Gabriele Rizzardi who has brought together an interesting selection of wines including some rare labels. Its Constellation of the Stars (3-course Star Menu, 4-course Moon Menu and 5-course Sun Menu) highlights the chef’s wide breadth of culinary skills. “You can have all three starters for your three courses if you like and if there is anything you don’t like, we will change it,” said Gabriele. Those out for a gastronomic adventure will appreciate the chef’s degustation menu which features about 8-10 courses that promise to tantalise with inspiration from the chef’s Italian heritage. There is also a seasonal set with prices subject to ingredients featured.

We soon discover that the team is all out to please. One of the service staff Jeffrey Hong made some excellent recommendations and offered to divide the dishes into two portions so that we can taste more of the dishes. The chef teased with the amuse bouche, a mini dish of crème brulee topped with truffle and it worked like magic as it whetted a great appetite for more of his surprises. For starters, Wagyu beef carpaccio with pear and Parmesan cheese, Burratina cheese from Andria; combined with Parma Ham “Galloni Aged 24 Months” made good beginnings. We got a kick when Jeffrey treated us to a few drops of a limited edition of balsamic vinegar which was aged for 40 years on the Burratina cheese. For those who love seafood and soup, the chef offered a very flavourful Mediterranean fish and seafood soup. A personal favourite is the linguine with squid ink served with bamboo clams. It was beautifully presented in the bamboo clam shell on a black clay plate and it did not disappoint. Another surprise that pleases the palate was the chef’s oxtail Tortelli “Plin” Stile with spugnole mushrooms.

Above Enjoy a gourmet adventure with Denis Lucchi’s highly flexible menu and delights with his versatility.

For main course, highly recommended is charcoal grilled Iberico pork jaw served with apple sauce which highlights the chef’s mastery in serving very tender slices that melt in your mouth. Those who enjoy lamb will be equally impressed with the chef’s lamb loin served with artichoke and potato pave. End the meal with several choices for desserts including nougat parfait with Passito wine sauce and molten chocolate lava cake in addition to traditional tiramisu with white chocolate. The restaurant opens for dinner only. +

HIS DRIVING FORCES

At work, LEONG YEW KIT drives his team hard to achieve significant cost reductions. At leisure, his super cars and 800-strong collection of model cars keep him up to speed with his dreams.

Having been an auditor and now a financial controller means Leong Yew Kit has had to watch company finances very closely. In addition, he would come up with creative solutions to reduce operation costs and increase profits. Once, when one of the companies he had worked for was going to be in the red, the stringent financial controller went back to the cost accounting book to scrutinise all the costs incurred. Leong believes in plugging gaps and there indeed, he found gaps – in fact, ones so large he managed to recover millions of dollars for his company. “We did a lot of work building a case to recover all the extra costs for the project we did. There were a lot of gaps between what we quoted and what we actually incurred for variation works. So I plugged all the gaps to recover $6 to $8 million, and that put the company back on track, from almost losing about $5 million to being profitable.” Below The Ferrari 348 is Leong Yew Kit’s latest baby, after his Porsches.

Opposite In Leong’s treasure trove collection of over 800 model cars, there are handcrafted limited edition models such as the Michael Schumacher F12001 scaled at 20 per cent of the actual car.

51

Leong is currently the International Financial Controller of Ultratech SE Asia. The accounting graduate started his career in KPMG Singapore as an auditor in mid-1995 and was promoted to Audit Senior before moving on to Philips Electronics Singapore in 1998. At Philips Electronics, the highly valued auditor was appointed Financial Controller of the nation-wide project – the Electronic Road Pricing System. Leong is well respected for his passion in pushing every company he has worked for towards sizeable cost reductions of 5 to 15 per cent per annum. Over the years, he has organised overhauls and improved each company’s system to lead to more impressive figures in their annual statements. In the early years of his career, Leong would even stay up to 6am in the office to help whenever his sales colleagues were to prepare quotations for bids and tenders. Work aside, since his university days, Leong fell in love with die cast car models. Now, three decades later, his collection features 800 models, which currently spill out of a whole bedroom. But he is in the midst of moving out and has factored in a design at his new place to better showcase his proud assembly. To explain how much he loves his model cars, Leong recounts how he felt at the end of his university days in Australia, when he could not bring his precious collection back to Singapore. “I felt as though I was leaving a part of myself behind then,” he recalls. “I can still remember every one of those cars that I had to sell while preparing to come home.” Despite that, he did not give up on this first love and slowly built up his collection again. Not surprisingly, his current model cars are even more outstanding. Leong takes pride in his limited edition Formula 1 cars – this treasure trove of model cars are all hand-crafted just like the real thing to every last detail. And they include the biggest car in his collection, the Michael Schumacher F1-2001. Scaled at 20 per cent of the size of the actual car, it takes up about a quarter of a small room.

Beyond model cars, Leong fantasised about exotic cars. In fact, it was his passion for cars that brought him and his wife together, as they met and interacted online in the ’90s about fast cars they love. His dream finally materialised in 2002 when he bought his first Porsche 911. This car lover has since moved on to his second 911 in 2009 and a Ferrari 348 in 2012. “My wife never objects to any cars that I buy. Now, she ferries the kids around daily in the Porsche Cayenne, and occasionally drives the 911, too,” shares Leong. But he cheekily confesses to us at the end of this interview: “I know my love for nice sports cars is my weakness. In fact, it doesn’t tally. When I first bought my sports car, my then MD saw me and said, ‘You’re the first finance guy I’ve seen with a sports car. I’d have thought you’d be driving a Nissan Cefiro.’ He could never picture a finance guy driving something more expensive than a four-door saloon!” laughs Leong. +

The boom of our neighbouring economic region, Iskandar, and this special tax-free zone within called Medini is well known in Asia. Now, a developer from Singapore has upped the ante with the upcoming launch of its sleek and iconic residential project – Privé Medini – as Marie Wee and Chia Boon Teck find out.

Page 53 Stylish with a twist, being inspired by fast cars and gentlemen’s clubs, Privé Medini will be one of Iskandar’s sleekest luxury condominiums to watch out for.

This page Intense attention to detail and luxurious fittings can be found in Privé Medini. Opposite page Built on elevated ground and above a multi-storey carpark, the residential units of Privé Medini enjoy an awe-inspiring view; Optimus Developments’ managing director Melvin Ho at one of his developments.

Soon, you will be able to read your morning papers on a rapid train, reach Kuala Lumpur for your business meeting in merely 90 minutes, and head right back for your afternoon appointment in Singapore. No more arriving two hours in advance for the flights; and no more driving in heavy traffic near the CIQs. This vision will be realised in less than six years’ time in 2020, when the High Speed Rail (HSR) starts connecting Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. With a proposed stop in Nusajaya, Iskandar in Johor Bahru before the HSR reaches Singapore, these two neighbouring regions will no doubt be seeing bustling businesses and even more investment activities. For those who wish to commute with ease every day between Singapore and Iskandar, the good news is that the Rapid Transit System’s (RTS) launch

in 2019 will link it to Singapore’s Thomson-East Coast Line MRT. The value of any real estate is intricately linked to its location and the transport network around it. With the proximity of Iskandar to us, and such international transport projects going through this economic region, not to mention a 14.5km coastal highway already in place, savvy property buyers have been snapping up the real estate here. ZOOMING IN ON MEDINI Melvin Ho, managing director of Optimus Developments, is a strong advocate of Iskandar with his vision of its future prospects. With his belief in the potential of the region, he has singled out one of the best locations in the heart of it: Medini, the central business district (CBD) of its flagship Nusajaya Zone, for his latest development. Many incentives for

55

businesses have been granted only in Medini, being the CBD of Iskandar, and one of these attractive incentives is corporate tax exemption for 10 years. “Many people didn’t know about Iskandar a few years ago – they think it is all about Legoland. This economic region is actually three times the size of Singapore,” comments Ho.

properties are exempted from the usual price cap for foreigners to purchase a property in Iskandar and there can be 100 per cent foreign ownership (from the sale or sub-sale of properties). These are the reasons why Ho feels that Medini “is a perfect place for foreigners to invest in.”

Today, the success of Iskandar is a household story. Of the RM131.6 billion (S$51.5 billion) in the committed investments that Iskandar had attracted since its launch in 2006 till December last year, a quarter of it went into residential properties, according to The Straits Times in July this year.

NUSAJAYA: THE FLAGSHIP TO WATCH Medini is strategically located in Nusajaya, which is a mere 10 minutes’ drive from Singapore’s second link to Malaysia. It is cleverly located within a 45-minute drive from Singapore’s Changi airport, and just 20 minutes from Johor’s own Senai International Airport.

zone for Iskandar. Among them, there is the majestic Kota Iskandar, Johor state’s new administrative centre, and EduCity, which includes international colleges such as the famous Newcastle Medical School and Marlborough College boarding school, both from the UK, as well as MDIS the Management Development Institute of Singapore. Highly hyped catalyst projects also attract worldwide attention, investments and talent – among them, the most oft-talked about projects are the Legoland theme park, the first Legoland in Asia and first international park in Malaysia; British film and television studio, Pinewood, which is developed following its strategic agreement with the Malaysian government’s investment holding arm, Khazanah Nasional Berhad; and an integrated autosports hub that is a joint venture between Fastrack Autosports, which is part-owned by Singapore tycoon Peter Lim and the Johor royal family, and UEM Land, the Malaysian state-owned real estate company. ABSOLUTE PRIVACY If you’re a fan of James Bond, you would be excited by Ho’s plan for his development named Prive Medini. This sleek residential project is conceptualised as a “gentlemen’s club”, where fast cars and luxury living take centrestage. Its single sky-scraping residential tower displays a top floor where one can find a sky-pool with a breath-taking view of the cityscape and the coast, a sleek Whiskey and Cigar Lounge. Privé Medini will be a private haven, complete with private lifts for every unit, for exotic and luxury car owners to live near the action of the region’s most anticipated autosports hub. Ho’s

57

vision is highly enticing: An exclusive property development with less than 200 units of generously spaced studio apartments and two-bedders available by invitation or recommendation to super car owners. Besides being fitted with high-end European brands such as De Dietrich within the apartments, it also comes with super car-inspired facilities to cater to the needs of its residents. There is also a podium marked out as a special parking zone, where the residents’ top-end collectors’ cars can be parked and showcased along with UK-imported F1 simulators akin to those that Lewis Hamilton trains with. Now, how’s that for a showpiece to impress your guests the moment they enter the driveway? And that is just the beginning. Host your guests at the top-floor private dining room with a fully equipped kitchen for your chef-on-hire. Postdinner, guests can enjoy a glass of single malt at the Whiskey Bar and a smoke at the Cigar Lounge, or even a classic movie together at the Screening Room, which is also slated as a possible venue for pre-drive briefings for the residents. To conclude, Ho adds, “We do not just develop properties, we develop land

into living legacies of style. Potential owners will know about the launch of Privé Medini in September by invitation only – that’s how unique and exclusive this will be.” BUILT ON EXPERIENCE Suave and youthful-looking, Ho’s looks belie his age and experience as a property investor and developer. At the tender age of 26, Ho actually gave up a career in his family business of shipbuilding, which has lasted two generations, to be an entrepreneur. After a series of business start-ups, the entrepreneur started trading his first property in the prime River Valley area in 2004. Since then, he has

personally put his design touch in all his property projects. To date, this developer has proven that he has an eye for style and concept to make his establishments such successes. Privé Medini will be his high-speed vehicle to international success. + This page The top floor of Privé Medini’s multi-storey carpark features F1 simulators while it is also a designated podium for the residents’ top-end collectors’ cars; a private dining room in the sky is one of the facilities that residents at Privé can look forward to.

Opposite page Privé Medini’s Whiskey and Cigar Lounge is reminiscent of a designer rooftop bar; Being a member of the ExotiCar Club has inspired Melvin Ho’s unique concept of Privé Medini, which is tailored to the needs of super car owners.

SKY’S THE LIMIT

Armani/Casa’s new collection evokes celestial bodies through artisanal techniques and exotic fabrics.

This page Living spaces re-imagined with precious materials and fabrics. Opposite Armani Casa 2014 Collection.

65

Design idol Giorgio Armani’s recent desire was to craft the night sky within the luxury bedroom. Utilising uncommon silks to realise the dream of sleeping under the stars indoors, Armani/Casa’s tasteful new endeavour is vastly permeated by Signor Armani’s keen eye for detail. He introduces materials like Shantung silk, from the eastern regions of China, which is easily identifiable by its slub yarns, using the soft fabric’s alternating matt and shiny property to reminisce natural settings. Palm tree and trompe l’oeil motifs in sepia and light blue/beige accentuate the wall covering’s vivacious look in trademark Armani sophistication. Continuing Armani/Casa’s fruitful partnership with Jannelli&Volpi, other wall coverings from this new collection employ specialised weaving patterns of metallic threads upon marble pattern silk to create a tranquil contrast. Also beautified by metallic thread is a fabric obtained from the agave plant, named sisal. These interweaves add vibrancy to the light blue and beige shell pattern that embellishes the covering. Of all possible areas of design, Giorgio Armani feels that domestic architecture is the one with the most opportunity for sensitive creative nuances. He elucidates that these utilitarian pieces of art fuse the formal rigours of architecture with the atmospheric input of interior design, in his view reflecting the passage of time, shifting opinions and changing individual points of view.

His new art-inspired foray is also highlighted by functional yet nonetheless aesthetically engaging pieces of furniture. The Exception decorative screen, for instance, brandishes palm tree motifs and a black maple finish frame upon a captivating fabric base of nubby silk, while the dashing Elliot storage unit embellishes its technical shagreen fabric with wallpaper-coated interiors. The bamboo cane design of the Riesling bar cabinet draws attention to this labour of love’s relief that is sculpted from walnut, which is furthermore both waxed and finished by hand. Manual craftsmanship spans creations like the Trocadero dining table, whose patinated linen top and black maple legs are complemented by a tedious silver leaf finish in order to achieve a playful chiaroscuro effect. Classic Italian detailing also manifests in the form of lighting, which illuminates these mentioned pieces in their most flattering shades. The muse of Armani/Casa’s array of lighting options is evidently traditional oriental lamps. Notably, a stunning glass table lamp named after the lauded Italian astronomer Margherita Hack furnishes the Armani/Casa study. It is joined by a similarly memorable glass pendant lamp named Halley after the famous comet. Members of this collection like the glass-based Hyades exhibit

traditional Murano glassmaking techniques passed down through the generations, lighting up pieces like the Hemingway leather-leafed desk with Panama inlays. All these lighting solutions of the 2014 Armani/Casa series are available in two versions – either with a layer of gold leaf applied when hot to an opal glass base, which is then covered with a coat of grey tinted glass, or with veins similar to those found in rock, fusing grey matt glass rods on a blue mass of glass, which is then placed over an internal layer of opal glass. Armani/Casa’s celebrated collaboration with Rubelli also sees a revival this collection, with handlooms of natural silk and linen decorated with metallic threads and lurex. Featuring mother of pearl, shells and stones as embroidered embellishments, an emphatic range of yarns put together by rare skills binds together the stellar Armani/Casa Exclusive Textiles by Rubelli collection, whose contoured silk, organza and taffeta offerings weft with fil coupe details. + Da Vinci Home Collection 191 Upper Bukit Timah Road Tel: +65 6468 6333 www.davinciasia.com IMAGES COURTESY OF DA VINCI HOME | WRITTEN BY ANDRE FROIS

AFFLUENT art

Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre over the weekend of 4 – 7 October, Fine Art Asia 2014 has outdone itself once again with its strongest-ever collection of museumquality fine art. Around one hundred prestigious art galleries congregated at the fair, which was organised by Art & Antique International Fair Ltd (AAIF), to present a remarkable selection of Asian and Western art. These comprised paintings, textiles, jades, ceramic wares, jewellery, antique furniture and silver, and timepieces from all eras and origins. WONDERS OF THE WORLD This year, returning international dealers had much to offer. In the antiques section, David Aaron Ancient Arts, London, showcased an exceptional female idol dating from Luristan, Iran, dating back to the 1st millennium B.C. Fine Art Asia once again continued its close collaboration with its partners Cathay Pacific Airways as the fair official carrier; Grand Hyatt Hong Kong as its official hotel partner; and Martell, which sponsored an exclusive VIP lounge at the fair once again, as well as co-presented a showcase of precious artworks at the fair to celebrate its 300th birthday. + www.fineartasia.com Left Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), The Kiss (conceived 1886, cast c. 1905), Bowman Sculpture, London.
