Yeshiva Har Torah Year In Review 2019–2020 • 5780 / ‫תש”פ‬

Yeshiva Har Torah is a Centrist Orthodox yeshiva for boys and girls. Our mission is to educate children in a warm, caring environment that brings out the unique qualities and maximum potential of each child. As a religious school, Yeshiva Har Torah is dedicated to Torah values, Halacha (Jewish law), and Medinat Yisrael (the State of Israel). Our goal is to provide a challenging and innovative academic program and to foster a love of learning in each child, while integrating Kavod HaBriot (respect for humanity) in all that we do.

Dear YHT Family, What a year this has been! Nearly two-thirds into a very productive and successful school year, we were confronted with a global pandemic. In addition to causing terrible loss and suffering, it threatened that to which we have grown so accustomed and even taken for granted: our ability to educate our precious children in person! While we were forced to literally close our doors overnight, I am proud that we did not miss even one day of classes. More significantly, we offered our students much more than just a quality educational program. We created a sense of community by engaging our students and families in a host of spiritually uplifting, intellectually stimulating and fun activities, including our erev Shabbat oneg, musical Havdalah and Hallel, scavenger hunts, game shows, and evening art and physical fitness classes. Our physical separation did not in any way diminish our beloved Yeshiva’s ability to thrive and inspire. How prophetic that our theme for the year was #BetterTogether. My revered Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, zt”l, distinguished between the Torah’s use of the words machaneh and edah in reference to the Jewish people while travelling through the desert. A machaneh implies a defensive formation, a group coming together for mutual protection for the purpose of survival. Edah, on the other hand, connotes a congregation which comes together because they share a common vision, a shared aspiration. An edah is a creative group that is able to accomplish what none of its members could achieve individually. This past year, our Yeshiva Har Torah family, our students, our teachers, our lay leaders and our parents, came together as an edah, a vibrant school community with a strong sense of mission to continue to inspire our children. We overcame many challenges and did it together! I hope you enjoy our 2019-20/5780 Year in Review, which I believe, beautifully captures our very special school community through this most unique school year.

Academics

‫אקדמאים‬

As our families were heading to their respective Purim seudot we received word of a positive Covid-19 test in our family. That night, an already prepared action plan was put in motion. YHT had distance learning up and running the next morning, without missing a single day of school. One component of that plan was a conscious decision that, given the challenges of quarantine, our distance learning program should be directed to our families as a whole.

Grants

Our Director of Student Activities, Mr. Rafi Allman, with the help of so many others, held a night activity that first night and continued right until the end of school. We also developed a "YHT Conviviality" website devoted entirely to fun activities, including bedtime stories, art projects, physical education, social media challenges, live workouts, weekly onegs with highlight videos and singing, life-skill videos for students -- including how

to clean a toilet (yes, really) and how to make a bed -- and so much more. We also sent photographers around on Yom Haatzmaut to take distanced family pictures on front lawns as a fun surprise. We capped the year off with a series of in-person but distanced events, including Early Childhood end of year programs, ice cream parties, and an unforgettable 8th-grade drivein graduation (pictures on the front and back cover of this publication).

‫מענקים‬

Ramapo for Children Comes to YHT To further enhance our Early Childhood program, our teachers received training from Ramapo for Children in strategies and best practices for creating a classroom environment that supports success for all students. Ramapo’s approach is consistent with YHT’s -- that all young people want the same things: to learn, to feel valued for who they are, and to experience success. The Ramapo Toolbox helps teachers see challenging behaviors through the lens of unmet needs and lagging skills, and provides strategies to help children achieve their potential. Teachers learned valuable techniques that they have been able to implement to benefit our children.

We were fortunate to receive two recent grants from The Legacy Heritage Foundation. The first was primarily focused on Board and brand development. The funds were used to hire Fridman Strategies to coach and advise the YHT Board of Directors. In addition, Viva La Brand consulted on school branding and helped continue recent efforts to hone and unify YHT’s messaging and branding. A second matching grant from The Legacy Heritage Foundation will be used on a range of initiatives that will be implemented in the coming year. YHT also received a significant and generous matching grant from UJA-Federation of New York to amplify scholarship funds. Like other private schools, we benefit from the work of Teach NYS in advocating for increased government funding for private schools.

Expansion Campaign

‫קמפיין לפרוייקט התרחבות‬

After more than a year of preparation, we closed on a second property just one mile down the road from our current facility. The new property is almost two acres and, although the Covid-19 pandemic has temporarily slowed fundraising efforts, we look forward to renewing our capital drive to raise the funds necessary to develop the new property into a state-of-the-art early childhood center!

Operating Budget

‫תקציב תפעולי‬

As a result of continuous review and analysis of its financial position, for the 2019-2020 academic year, Yeshiva Har Torah operated on a balanced budget of approximately $9MM.

Better Together ● To ensure we were able to meet the needs of as many of our families as possible during the current economic downturn, YHT launched the 36 hour Better Together Campaign with a goal of raising $300,000. Due to the incredible generosity and foresight of our Better Together Matchers, every dollar that was pledged to this campaign was matched dollar for dollar. Many of our parents took on personal fundraising goals to help. As a result of the incredible support from all of our matchers, donors, and volunteers we succeeded in raising over $380,000 in 36 hours.

MiDor L’Dor Program * As the generation that built the current Jewish education infrastructure, we recognize grandparents’ talent and vital role in educating our students. The MiDor L’Dor program is one way grandparents can help. Our grandparent society is an important initiative that helps us provide the rich educational experience their grandchildren so richly deserve. We also invite grandparents to get involved in their grandchildren’s yeshiva in other ways. They can volunteer to serve lunch to their grandchildren and their friends, read the “book of the month” to their grandchildren’s class, and contribute their unique talents in most any way they can think of! Throughout, our grandparents derive immeasurable nachat!
