Volgens de peilingen behoren de lage landen tot de gelukkigste landen ter wereld. Maar wat typeert Nederland, de Hollander, en hoe zien wij dit terug in onze cultuur? Zijn wij echt puur ‘Dutch Design’ als we inzoomen op onze cultuur, of zijn we inmiddels een kunstige, multiculturele mix geworden? In de Nederlandse kunst en design zien we onze cultuur onder andere terug in de avontuurlijkheid, vindingrijkheid en de knipogen naar de werkelijkheid. Mondriaan werd in zijn creaties bijvoorbeeld geïnspireerd op de belijningen in onze landschappen. Er zijn echter ook tal van designers die hun inspiratie niet alleen binnen onze landgrenzen hebben gevonden. Tijdens de nieuwe expositie ‘Culture Cult’ wil het D&A (Design&ARTemis) Platform laten zien welke invloed genetica of de ervaringen met andere culturen hebben in de vorming van kunst en design.

Met als vaandeldrager de kunstenaar die geraakt is door de bourgondische levenswijze en dit overbrengt door middel van zijn creaties en zo eenieder aansteekt en het de NL samenleving in trekt. Maar wat te denken van de globetrotter die vol Nederlandse eigenheid de multiculturele samenleving promoot door hét NL icon in een nieuw, cultureel jasje te steken. Geen kussende poppetjes met boer Harmsen en zijn trouwe Truus, maar een verliefd Aziatisch echtpaar in een gelijksoortige pose, met dezelfde Delft blauwe kleur op de konen. Tijdens de D&A expositie ‘Culture Cult’ presenteren wij de kijk en creaties van in Nederland gevestigde kunstenaars, die voor hun ontwerpen buiten de kaders van ons strak vormgegeven land zijn gegaan. Deze expositie wordt een onderdompeling van culturen waarin de verschillen ten opzichte van ons kikkerlandje in onze wereld van eenheid te ervaren, maar vooral de prachtige versmelting van culturen.

A variety of polls show us that the low countries are among the happiest countries in the world. However, what is it that characterizes a typical Dutchman? And how does it influence our culture? When we dive into our culture, are we really genuine and authentic ‘Dutch Design’, or did we become more of an artistic, multi-cultural mixture? In Dutch art and design our culture gets reflected in things like the adventurous side of it, and the little winks within its reality and ingenuity. For his creations, Mondriaan got inspired by the artistic lines of our country sides. But there are many artists and designers that have spread their wings and found their inspiration beyond the borders of our country. During the new exhibition ‘Culture Cult’, the D&A (Design&ARTemis) Platform wants to show which genetics or experiences with other cultures influenced the formation of Dutch art and design as we know it today. Therefore we present the visions and creations of Dutch based artists who dare to go beyond the artificial boundaries of our culture in order to shape their creations. ’Culture Cult’ will become an immersion of cultures with all its varieties in comparison with our small country where we find a world of unity.

“On a journey through a wide variety of cultures, I get to discover myself, something which gives my work more color” Dutch Design as a colorful mishmash of cultures A mishmash of cultures, led by the capable artist who got touched by the Burgundian way of life and who wants to convey this into the Dutch society through his catchy creations. Or what about a true woman of the world, who promotes our multicultural society in an authentic Dutch manner, by taking a genuine Dutch icon to a whole new level?! No longer it’s a typical Dutch farmer and his loyal wife on wooden shoes who find each other in one of the world’s most famous kisses, but instead you’ll now encounter an Asian couple who seal the love in a similar pose, dressed up in the same Delft blue colors. During this D&A exhibition ‘Culture Cult’ we present the enlightening visions and creations of Dutch based artists, who got inspired far beyond the tightly shaped borders of our culture. In other words, this exhibition will not only be an immersion of cultures, but more even it will be about the fascinating fusion of cultures.

Kathrine Barbro Bendixen (1991, Denemarken) ontving haar bachelor diploma van Design Academy Eindhoven in 2016. Ze werkt nu als een gevestigde ontwerper in Kopenhagen (Denemarken) waar ze zich op het materiaal concentreert. Het idee om natuurlijke materialen te gebruiken, met een focus op duurzaamheid, is een passie van haar geworden. Haar experimenten inspireren haar om nieuwe vormen te creĂŤren en om nieuwe processen te ontwikkelen. Het materiaal betekent de persoonlijkheid en het verhaal van het product, en haar relatie ermee. Ze werkt in het grijze gebied tussen kunst en design en gebruikt vaak artistieke vormen om een functioneel ontwerp te maken.

She is now working as an established designer in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she puts focus on the material. The idea of using natural materials, with a focus on sustainability, has become a passion of hers. Her experiments inspire her to create new forms and to develop new processes. The material signifies the personality and the story of the product, and her relation to it. She works within the space between art and design and often uses artistic forms to create a functional design.

The creation of Guy Olivier are full of enormously colorful surprises. From a hammer to a brush, the world is one big atelier and no object is left unused for this versatile artist who finds inspiration in ‘ Le fête continue’. Something which is reflected into a mix of oil paint, acrylic paint and found objects from the street, that find their way into the more than remarkable works of art.

De brug slaan tussen deze twee werelden is onze specialiteit. Niet alleen bij zijn eigen werk was Piet Hein Eek vindingrijk; de sobere vormgeving en gebruik van simpel materiaal met de kast van sloophout waarmee hij bekend werd. Ook in de samenwerking met FairForward waarvoor Eek op reis ging naar Vietnam wist hij op vindingrijke manier een prachtig ontwerp te maken en tegelijk een voorraadprobleem bij de producent op te lossen.

Our approach is the result of decades of experience with promising producers on one hand and the consumer who opt for honest products on the other. The bridge between these two worlds is our specialty. Piet Hein Eek was inventive, not only in his own work; the sober design and use of simple material with the cabinet of reclaimed wood with which he became well known. Also in the cooperation with FairForward for which Eek traveled to Vietnam, he invented a beautiful design in a creative way and at the same time solved a stock problem at the producer.

Kiss myArt&Design ESMERALDA VAN MALDE BEELDENDE KUNST |FINE ART KISSMYART-DESIGN.NL Kunst met een knipoog. Door de jaren heen en mijn bezoeken aan verschillende landen; met name Mexico, werd ik geïnspireerd door de vormen, kleuren, mensen, geloven, natuur en dieren. In de meeste van mijn werken zul je dan ook Mexicaanse invloeden zien gemixt met Aziatische invloeden en andere culturen en geloven. Zo ben ik op het idee gekomen, om een collectie te maken “Colors of life” deze bestaat uit kunst met glaskralen op meerdere decoratie en interieur objecten. Ik vervang hiermee het schilders doek voor echte schedels/ objecten en de verf vervang ik door een nieuw medium 1mm/4mm glaskralen afgegoten met epoxy lak. Een van mijn uitdagingen is om van een alledaags misschien wel saai object, een kleurrijke kunstzinnig stuk te maken, iets waar je niet omheen kunt. Daarnaast wil ik laten zien wat er nog meer mogelijk is en probeer ik op deze manier een tweede nieuw leven in te blazen. Ik wil aan de wereld laten zien wat voor moois je kunt creëren als je alles samen brengt, door het mixen van kleuren, invloeden van mensen, dieren, culturen, geloven en vormen, krijg je een unieke kunstzinnige eyecatcher! Ik zal daar zeker een bepaald gevoel bij de kijker losmaken, daarom associeer ik mijn kunst ook wel eens met: Kunst met een knipoog!

Art with a wink. Over the years and my visits to different countries; especially Mexico, I was inspired by the shapes, colors, people, beliefs, nature and animals. In most of my works, you will see Mexican influences mixed with Asian influences and other cultures and beliefs. Thus I came to the idea of making a collection “Colors of Life”, which consists of art with glass beads on multiple decoration and interior objects. I hereby replace the painters cloth for real skulls / objects and replace the paint with a new medium 1mm / 4mm glass beads ejected with epoxy lacquer.

One of my challenges is to make an everyday, perhaps boring object, a colorful artistic piece, something that you can not surround. In addition, I want to show what is more possible and I try to get a second new life in this way. I want to show the world what beauty you can create if you bring together, by mixing colors, influences of people, animals, cultures, beliefs and shapes, you get a unique artistic eye catcher! I’m sure to loosen a certain feeling with the viewer, so I associate my art with: Art with a wink!

Kiss myArt&Design NADINE VAN GESTEL BEELDENDE KUNST | FINE ART KISSMYART-DESIGN.NL Al op vroege leeftijd heb ik veel van de wereld mogen zien en ontdekken, door deze ervaringen heb ik enorm veel inspiratie op gedaan en zag ik hoe mooi de wereld eigenlijk kan zijn. Schilderen is voor mij een uitlating van de ziel en mijn emotie, als het ware een dagboek in kleur. Elk schilderij heeft dan ook een eigen verhaal, verscholen gedachtes en dromen. Ik maak wat ik voel, dat kan zowel abstract als contemporary art zijn. In de loop der jaren heb ik een bepaalde abstracte stijl ontwikkeld die ik zelf zou benoemen als layers in mysterious harmony. Kijk, lees, denk, geniet, hersenspinsels .. en ervaar!

I had the opportunity to see and discover a lot of the world at an early age, because of these experiences I have gained a lot of inspiration and saw how beautiful the world can be. For me, painting is an expression of the soul and my emotion, as like a diary in color. Every painting has its own story, hidden thoughts and dreams. Het is de meest eenvoudige manier om een constructie te maken die niet wiebelt. De eenvoud zelve, niet te verbeteren. “Ik concentreerde me op één detail: het punt waar de drie stokken bij elkaar komen. Door dit te verlengen en samen te binden ontstaat een nieuw eigenzinnig silhouet. Een nekje dat doet denken aan de vrouwen van een Zuid Afrikaanse stam die elk jaar weer een volgende zilveren ring om hun hals krijgen als sieraad.” Door de keuzes uit bladen en poten ontstaat een serie van unieke objecten. Makkelijk te tillen met een hand worden het je nomadische huisgenoten, die zich elegant voegen bij hun omgeving.

Everybody has seen a tripoid table before. It’s the easiest way to make a construction that does not wobble. Perfectly simple, not so easy to improve. “I concentrated on one essential detail: the very spot where the three rods meet. By extruding the form and joining the legs by winding metal wire around them a new stunningly clever and functional design is created. As van Dansik saw this elegant long ringed ‘neck’ emerge in the silhouette of his table it reminded him imediaty of the adorned necks of the Ndebele women of South Afrika. The iconic Ndebele table is so light, one can pick it up by the neck and carry it around in one hand. Still it is surprisingly strong and capable of supporting objects up to 5 kilo. It is likely to lead a nomadic existence in your house, it will go wherever you need it to be, just to place your favourite object on it.

Deze interventie kan functioneren als een arena voor reflectie en dialoog over de relatie tussen locatie, etniciteit, identiteit, cultuur en hun representaties. Zal elke toerist een actueel Nederlands kussend paartje als zodanig herkennen? En zal elke Nederlander zich hiermee identificeren?

By adding new multicultural kissing couples to the original one, I want to continue the adaptation process of this souvenir by narrating actual valuable aspects of Dutch Culture. This intervention may provide an arena for reflection and dialogue about the relationship between location, ethnicity, identity, culture and their representation. Could every tourist recognize today’s Dutch Kissing Couple? Does every Dutch citizen identify with it?

“To Kiss or not to Kiss” is een project waarin ik het actualiseren van lokale souvenirs onderzoek door te zoeken naar hetgeen dat ‘authenticiteit’ en ‘representatie’ van Nederland als multi-cultureel en divers land verbeeld.

“To Kiss or not to Kiss” is a project where I explore the actualization of local souvenirs by searching for new depictions of what is ‘authentic’ and ‘representative’ of the Netherlands as a multicultural and diverse society.

Daarom is onze missie: mensen uit verschillende culturen de mogelijkheid bieden om een duurzame band op te bouwen.

To achieve this we give workshops that guide people through the process of talking about cultural backgrounds, differences and similarities. Our tangible toolkit provides participants with a new and approachable way to start a conversation.

Om deze missie te bereiken, geven we workshops waarin deelnemers culturele verschillen en overeenkomsten ontdekken en leren begrijpen. Hierbij gebruiken we de tastbare Connecting Cultures toolkit. Zo bieden we een toegankelijke manier om het gesprek te starten.
