People, the great value of the natural stone

I

thought that writing a small article related to the marble, a material that represents a large part of my life, was going to be simple and quick. But that thought disappeared when I face a blank page. Many sensations and 4

experiences arised in order to be able to describe what I felt but, how could I put all together in just a few words? That will be understood, immediately, when I explain that , my dilemma, was due to have been born, raised and work

Arquitectura del Mármol

In the most important Marble Region in Spain, Macael. Descendant of several generations of quarrymen, with our most appreciated asset being part of all our squares, streets, fountains, houses, etc., it is not surprising that the colloquial expression “it is written in my DNA”, becomes a reality. Therefore, I have just been able to express that feeling, the passion, that the material, protagonist of my life, produces in each and every one of the people who work with it.

“If you have not yet had the privilege of watching how the quarrymen work, I encourage you to do so”. I will leave aside the indisputable value, already known by everybody, that, since ancient times, marble has had in architecture, to talk about the people that make up this sector. If you have not yet had the privilege of watching how the quarrymen work, (I say that in masculine because there is no

data that there was any woman in this field), I encourage you to do so. Watching them working and, specially, listening them talking about marble, increases its value.

passionate about his work, I have always been told the extraction process, without getting to understand it, with it characteristic slang that not many people could translate.

As a daughter of quarry pal,

I decided, when I saw the

the opportunity with my Master’s degree Project, without hesitation, to dedicate it to the extraction process, what increased my desire to keep researching and developing my career in this natural stone sector. During my career in my current company, I have been able to continue deepening the knowledge of another part that involves marble, which was totally alien to me. I have been able to know the multiple productive processes, necessary to obtain what the current consumer demands. I have even noticed the essential technological advance to maintain the positioning in the global market, generating speed and efficiency. But what I always highlight, day by day, in my company, is

how the workers treat the natural stone. Being able to identify if it presents problems that any other person could identify, or how the craftsman, gives the last ‘touch of magic’ to a Corinthian capital, or to a simple sill with a round edge, turning it into something more than a piece of stone, giving it value and essence. Would La Pietá be the same if it had been done with a CNC? Without forgetting Managers, Architects, Technical Architects, sales people and other components necessary to create projects and give them shape, looking for, always, the best solution to obtain the best results in marble to generate a customer satisfaction, that makes them seeing the natural stone as an essential product. el mármol #38

“Marble as an essential product”.

For all that, when I realized, during my studies, that my classmates were looking for solutions for coatings without taking into account the marble and its derivatives, I had to make them understand why it

must be an essential. As I pointed out, it is in my nature, it is impossible not to defend it, and also, the history, its characteristics and its beauty made them change their opinion without further opposition.

Craftsman doing a carving work on a piece of marble.

“To get a tile of 40x40 cm, there are many people who make any material something unique”. Excuse my daring to want express the emotional value of out natural stone in just a few paragraphs, but I wanted to omit the technical part and showing that to get a tile of 40x40 centimeters, there are many people who make any material something unique.

Thank you for this time, I will end up taking the words of a literature gentleman: the pen is the tongue of the mind. That is what I have tried to do, translating an apex of what goes through my mind, adding a bit of my soul.

T

he exterior walls of any building need resistant materials, capable to hold the weather inclemency, without its beauty is altered. The ‘Blanco

Macael’ marble, magical, with its own light, is, in that

sense, a hundred per cent successful choice. Natural beauty and modernity icon, this material, born in Sierra de los Filabres (Almería, Spain), is the ‘skin’ of innumerable

architectural buildings that, today, remain eternal.

Grupo Cosentino, leader in production and distribution of innovative surfaces for the architecture and design world, has been the material supplier for these three projects,

located in the north of Spain.

‘Blanco Macael’ crushed, design and sustainability They have become in a design elemental

element

for

outdoor

architecture. The use of pebbles and marble crushed is, today, synony-

mous, not only of design and avantgarde, but also, of functionality and sustainability. The so-called ’dry gardens’, created from crushed natural stone with different granulometries, have a zero maintenance cost, high durability

and

significant

water

savings. If, to all this, we join that this variety of material is made in 'Blanco Macael' Marble, the result becomes

insurmountable. el mármol #38

MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES In 1994, with the collaboration of the extractor companies from the Macael quarries, TBM Blanco Macael was created. This Company, belonging to the Macael Brand, has the objective of taking advantage, in a sustainable way, of the material that is extracted in the quarries and will no longer be used in other applications. In this way, products such a marble crushed and pebbles are commercialized for architectural use and micronized marble, is produced to be used in the elaboration of products such a paints, polyesters, pvc, rubbers, paper, fire extinguishers, feed, detergents, cosmetics and food additives, among others.
