By ADW Staff The biggest hurdle has been cleared on the path to a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons as the Atlanta City Council voted late Monday night to approve a funding plan for the new $1 billion retractable roof stadium. Falcons owner Arthur Blank called it ''a win-win'' and earlier promised that the new stadium will help the city continue to compete for all major events, including the Super Bowl. ''That's the only secret ballot in the NFL,'' he said. ''We'll have to earn it. But this public support is an important piece.'' Mayor Kasim Reed called the arrangement ''a great public-private partnership'' that will benefit the city and the state. The council voted 11-4 in favor of using city hotel-motel taxes to pay an estimated $200 million toward construction costs and potentially several times that toward costs of financing, maintaining and operating the stadium through 2050. All things considered, the cost to the public could actually end up being closer to $900 million. Through principal and interest payments, the hotel-motel tax could be as much as $450 million over 30 years and, according to projections cited by the AJC, another $450 million could go to the stadium over the years for operations and expenses through a "waterfall" fund. The $200 million number is a conservative estimate of the cost. The money going toward the stadium comes from the 39.3 percent of Atlanta's 7-cents-per-dollar hotel-motel tax that is mandated by state law to go to the Georgia World Congress Center Authoirty or a stadium project. In light of those numbers, City Councilmember Aaron Watson said he would no longer characterize the public contribution to the project as only the $200 million toward upfront construction.. Page 3

Republicans to Spend $10 Million to Reach Minorities By Associated Press Reeling from back-to-back presidential losses and struggling to cope with the country’s changing racial and ethnic makeup, the Republican National Committee plans to spend $10 million this year to send hundreds of party workers into Hispanic, Black and Asian communities to promote its brand among voters who overwhelmingly supported Democrats in 2012. Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Sunday also proposed shortening the presidential nominating calendar in 2016 and limiting the number of primary-season debates to avoid the self-inflicted damage from inside-party squabbling on the eventual nominee. Priebus’ top-to-bottom changes include picking the moderators for the debates and then crowning the nominee as early as June so he or she could begin a general election campaign as quickly as possible. “Mitt Romney was a sitting duck for two months over the summer,” Priebus said of the 2012 GOP nominee.

To help his party ahead of the 2016 contest already in its earliest stages, Priebus said he would be hiring new staffers to build the GOP among voters in the states. “It will include hundreds of people — paid — across the country, from coast-to-coast, in Hispanic, AfricanAmerican, Asian communities, talking about our party, talking about our brand, talking about what we believe in, going to community events, going to swearing-in ceremonies, being a part of the community on an on-going basis, paid for by the Republican National Committee, to make the case for our party and our candidates,” Priebus said. That move was part of the recommendations included in a month’s long look at what went wrong in 2012. Priebus tapped a handful of respected party leaders to examine how the GOP could better talk with voters, raise money from donors and learn from Democrats’ tactics. Priebus also asked the group to examine how they could work with independent groups, such as super political action committees.

Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary under former president George W. Bush, and Sally Bradshaw, a veteran strategist and top adviser to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, were among those leading the inquiry. Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour, a GOP strategist and nephew of former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, was also part of the group. A historic decline in the number of U.S. Whites and the fast growth of Latinos are blurring traditional Black-White color lines, testing the limits of civil rights laws and reshaping political alliances as ``Whiteness'' begins to lose its numerical dominance. The latest census data and polling from The Associated Press highlight the historic change in a nation in which non-Hispanic Whites will lose their majority in the next generation, somewhere around the year 2043. Despite being a nation of immigrants, America's tip to a White minority has never occurred in its 237-year history and

will be a first among the world's major post-industrial societies. ``The American experience has always been a story of color. In the 20th century it was a story of the Black-White line. In the 21st century we are moving into a new off-White moment,'' says Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, a global expert on immigration and dean of UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. ``Numerically, the U.S. is being transformed. The question now is whether our institutions are being transformed,'' he said.

ATL Aims for Auburn Avenue Development

The Sweet Auburn area of Atlanta has received an economic development designation that city leaders hope will help spur revitalization in the district. The neighborhood along Auburn Avenue just east of downtown was a cradle of Atlanta's African-American wealth and political clout. It includes Martin Luther King Jr.'s boyhood home and other civil rights landmarks. The area was recently designated as Atlanta's latest Opportunity Zone. The classification enables certain state tax incentives for businesses that expand in the zone, with credits of $3,500 per job available for the creation of as few as two net new jobs.

"I, for one, haven't heard much discussion of what the entire amount is going to be over the next 30 years," Watson said, adding he "had taken some comfort" in the $200 million figure but "had been nervous the number was actually more." The contract to build the stadium is based on the framework of a deal announced on March 7 at City Hall, which came after months of private negotiations -- and several years of planning and studies -- involving the governor's office, the World Congress Center Authority and the mayor's office, among others.

After last week's stadium deal announcement City Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell said he was encouraged and promised public hearings in the near future. Those meetings never happened and the City Council held only one open public forum about the project, at which former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young voiced support for it, saying the stadium was "another opportunity that gives [Atlanta] a chance to shape the future." Common Cause Georgia, a government accountability and advocacy group, however, claims that the entire project has been put together behind closed doors and the public has been misled. "You're left very clearly with the negotiating parties excluding the public while including the public's money," Common Cause Board Member Wyc Orr has said in earlier statements.

‘Our House’ Celebrates 25 Years of Help for the Homeless By CATHERiNE WiTHERSPOON ADW Staff When Sarah (name withheld) came to Our House, she was living in a homeless shelter with her 4-month-old daughter, jobless and abandoned by the baby’s father. All she hoped for, she says, was a job that would allow her to get out of the shelter and be able to pay bills. Today she is in the Master’s Program at Emory University and currently employed part time at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and as a Research Associate at Emory. “The person at Emory who showed me I could do this I met through my family advocate right here at Our House,” says Sarah . “People ask me how did I do it… it’s because I had Our House. I trusted them with my baby. I trust the people here,” she adds. “They were with me all the way.” Our House is celebrating its 25th anniversary helping to end homelessness through comprehensive support services and early childhood education. "We are proud of our 25 years of providing a place where homeless children can learn and get a great start on their lives and education," said Tyese Lawyer, Our House executive director, “and where their parents can find the support they need to ‘break the chains of homelessness.’” Our House was founded in 1988 by a group of shelter volunteers who saw a need to assist homeless women with their childcare needs. The women were required to vacate homeless shelters each morning with their children in tow and not return until the evening. “These women had to juggle finding a job, securing a home, acquiring job training and getting access to mainstream benefits, all while caring for their children. They did not have dependable, affordable childcare assistance,” Lawyer says. The reality is that homelessness most negatively impacts the children involved, she notes. Statistics show more than 41,500 children experience homelessness in Georgia every year.

Additionally, 16 percent of homeless children are not as proficient at reading and math as their classmates and fewer than 25 percent go on to graduate from high school. Our House, a 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award recipient, has as its primary objective to make certain every child that comes to them is school ready. The students are taught in small classrooms that are geared towards providing more structure for those students who may have emotional and behavioral issues and developmental and cognitive needs. The children who attend the program range from infant to Pre-K. The teachers at Our House use a creative curriculum in their classrooms that is focused on supporting the development of pre-literacy skills, self-help skills, confidence and resiliency all geared towards helping the children to accelerate in kindergarten once they leave the program. “As a mother, you want the best for your child, and with Our House, they have advanced with my son, and I can see when my son hits kindergarten, he will be ready,” says Ivory (name withheld) whose 5-year-old son attends the program. “That’s what Our House does for my child from the time I leave him here until the time I come to pick him up.”

The writings and work of Dr. Walter Rodney (1942-1980), a prominent Pan-Africanist, who was important in the Black Power movement in the Caribbean and North America, will be discussed at the 10th Annual Walter Rodney Symposium. Tyler Perry Previews Temptation in ATL

Compiled by ADW Staff The highly-anticipated new Tyler Perry flick “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor” previewed in Hotlanta this week at a star-studded event that brought paparazzi out of the woodwork. The movie officially opens on March 29 and stars Jurnee Smollet-Bell (“The Great Debaters”), Lance Gross ("House of Payne"), Robbie Jones ("90210"), Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Williams and Brandy Norwood. Writer-director-actor Tyler Perry spoke of what he hopes is his "most thought-provoking" movie yet, and gave high marks to his young cast. He also singled out Kardashian, who attended the opening sporting her baby bump and “baby’s daddy” Kanye West. "Kim was very, very professional from Day 1," said Perry. pictures through the trees." Perry joked that while such behavior was normal in New York or L.A., "This is Atlanta. You get your ass kicked doing that down here." But in a more serious vein, Perry said the film takes its tone from the subject matter: "It's about relationships and bad choices, and about how one moment can ruin your life." Smollet-Bell plays Judith, an ambitious, married woman who is tempted into adultery by a sexy billionaire named Harley (Jones). In the trailer, Harley is ruthless in his pursuit of Judith, capitalizing LANCE GROSS on her vulnerabilities and her husband Brice’s (Gross) inattentiveness. Harley wines and dines her, flies her around on his private jet, heals her sprained ankle, and offers her mind-blowing passion. But things get violent as her husband finally starts to notice that things are different, and Harley’s chivalrous facade starts to crumble. The haunting words, ROBBIE JONES presumably spoken from Judith’s mother, “That man is going to hurt you bad… he’s going to take you straight to hell,” foreshadow a tragic, Shakespearean end.

Historic Atlanta Churches in the Way of New Stadium Associated Press

Members of two historic Atlanta churches in the path of a proposed new NFL stadium are considering their options. Mt. Vernon Baptist Church is in the middle of the favored site for the Atlanta Falcons' new home, just south of the Georgia Dome. Friendship Baptist Church is just across Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which would have to be rerouted through the church's property to make way for the new stadium. Both congregations now face the weighty decision on whether to sell out to make way for a new stadium -- and if so for how much. “There’s no exact details yet on a proposal,” Lloyd Hawk, who chairs Friendship’s board, said at a recent service. “And when we do, we will bring to the congregation a vote to decide. We are a Baptist church, and at a Baptist church all decisions go to the congregation.” Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Blank both say they prefer the site near the churches, which would keep the stadium about as close as the Dome is to MARTA

and CNN Center. But they’re holding an option for a site about a half-mile north if negotiations with the churches fail. The churches have storied histories in the city. The late Mayor Maynard Jackson's father once preached at Friendship Baptist, a congregation whose history dates to the early days of the American Civil War. Morehouse College housed classes in the congregation in 1879 and Spelman began in the church's basement two years later. Mt. Vernon, which began as a storefront church in 1915, moved several times before landing at the property near the Georgia Dome, including a 1955 move because of road expansion. The negotiations are ongoing as other details of the stadium agreement crystallize. Georgia World Congress Center officials are invited to speak at Mt. Vernon on March 26. And city officials have already met several times with Friendship’s leaders to start hashing out a deal. “I’m confident we’ll get something done,” said Reed.

Michael Vick Returns to Atlanta for Church Appearance

Just days after cancelling book signings due to death threats, Michael Vick made a special appearance at a Stone Mountain church last week. It's been several years since Vick was convicted on dog fighting charges. He's since worked to try to change things, and last Saturday he brought his message back to the Atlanta area. Vick received a warm reception at the Victory for the World church, where he encouraged teens to make the right choices and avoid having to get second chances. "I'm glad to be back," Vick told the congregation. "Every decision counts, it's very important to think before you speak, think before you act, and kind of depend on the people who really believe in you." Vick was invited by Team Freedom Outreach, a program that works with teens in youth detention centers. The appearance came days after Vick cancelled book signings in Atlanta and two other states. He's been promoting his autobiography, "Finally Free." Vick's book "Finally Free" shows how a gifted athlete's life spiralled out of control under the glare of money and fame, aided by his own poor choices.

Mike Tyson Cable Series, ‘Being’ Announced

By RUTH MANUEL-LOGAN News One Fox Sports 1 (FS1) and boxing icon Mike Tyson have just announced their upcoming cable series “Being.” It will feature the famed sports figure in an all-access way, pulling no punches when it comes to letting viewers see who the man behind the tribal facial tattoo really is. It will be shot documentary style. The Tyson segment will spearhead a slew of programs on the network, which is rumored to be an ESPN rival, according to Fox Sports. The network’s launch will be in mid-August and its head honchos are boasting that it will produce nearly 5,000 hours of sports programming, news and live events annually. FS1 is expected to be televised in 90 million

homes and plans to utilize all of Fox’s resources. Already being touted as a “not your typical 24-hour sports network,” the “Being” series, which is in production now, will spotlight Tyson as not only a boxing legend; it will show him as a family man, husband and dad who is trying to maintain the life that he has established in Nevada. The “Being” series comes on the heels of the autobiographical one-man Spike Lee-directed Broadway show that Tyson appeared in last year. The former heavyweight champ has also appeared in multiple movies and has done TV guest spots.

Atlanta Dream Signs Sydney Carter To Training Camp Contract

The Atlanta Dream recently announced the team has signed Sydney Carter to a training camp contract. Carter, a 5’-6” guard, was a standout at Texas A&M, helping the Aggies win the 2011 NCAA National Championship while being named the Most Outstanding Player at the Dallas Regionals that season. A three-time co-captain for Texas A&M, Carter was twice named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team. Carter averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists as a senior, earning All-Big 12 Second Team honors. She was honorable mention All-Big 12 as both a junior and sophomore, and was a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. She most recently played in one game as a rookie with the Chicago Sky in 2012.

As I write, Chaka Khan’s empowering “I’m Every Woman” loops in my head – like a soundtrack. (By the way, have you seen her lately? All slim, trim and more fabulous than ever). It’s Women’s History Month and the lyrics to that iconic anthem should be resonating with all women, and those who love us, as we celebrate ourselves and the countless contributions we make everyday – both large and small -- that keep the world turning. No matter how small or far-reaching the radius of your world is every choice you make is important. Nielsen shines the light on women’s choices and our dynamic impact as consumers with two new global reports: Does Gender Matter and 10 Things to Know About Today’s Female Consumer. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – “Vive la différence.” Yes, we know that girls are just as smart as boys and women can do pretty much everything a man can – but, like it or not – our brains are wired differently. And, that’s OK. Women are master multitaskers, and there’s a scientific reason for that. Who knew, right? Nielsen’s NeuroFocus research shows that “ability” is driven by what happens to developing brains in the womb. Traits like big-picture thinking and multitasking are hard-wired in women’s brains, along with “gut” reasoning, social and verbal skills and the worry/empathy tendency. We balance work (either outside or in the home), take care of our families – nurture, budget, shop, schedule, run hither and yon – and keep it tight with ourselves as best we can. Men’s brains, on the other hand, are pre-conditioned for concrete thinking, goal-oriented tasks, logical solutions and competition/defense. (Cheryl’s translation: give them one thing to do at a time if you really want something to get done). How we think and respond influences the way companies and advertisers design their messages to us to achieve their economic bottom line. See how much power we have? These types of insights tell them that women respond to concepts that are authentic. Touch our hearts and you might earn our dollars. Even those of us who may be tomboys at heart, messages that focus on conflict simply aren’t going to resonate. And, you know how we love a bargain and will hunt high and low to find the best price? That’s something American women have in common with our sisters around the world. A Nielsen survey of more than 29,000 people with internet access in 58 countries shows that we women are browsers, no matter where we live – going for the best deal (in the store or online) while men are more likely to pay a higher price. That’s because men are typically on a mission to just win (uh, get the item no matter what). Here and across the globe, women are responsible for $12 trillion of the $18 trillion of global buying power. So, if marketers want our business, they need to offer products and services that reflect our needs. Consider these facts: • Women worldwide are optimistic about their roles, with 90% reporting they believe their role is changing for the better. • Worldwide, 70% of women surveyed have cut household spending over the past year in clothes, gas, electricity and entertainment outside the home. • Women in the U.S. spend significantly more time on social media sites than men. We’re online users of social media 44% more than men; and visit social media sites on our mobile devices 39% more than men. • African-American women between 18-35 are 72% more likely to publish a blog or express our preferences online via links or “likes” than the average adult in this country. • In the United States, African-American households are 127% more likely to include a single parent – usually a woman. (These are my people, as I am one of them, and I live by the mantra, ‘If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy’). This past week was full of activities that I want to share with you. I went to Tyler Perry’s house after a private screening of his new movie, “Temptation, Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.” I saw a world premiere opera by the Capitol City Opera Company titled “The Secret Agent.” And, I heard a panel of women talking about the challenges of balancing work and family courtesy of the YWCA. And through all three of these vastly different experiences, I came away with the same feeling: women have a hard row to hoe. In both the movie and the opera, the characters showed that one wrong move can ruin your life. At the real-life YWCA event, the women agreed that the “do all, be all syndrome” is a constant struggle and generally a losing battle. Now I don’t want to ruin your movie experience, (Tyler Perry’s newest opens the end of this month.) but I will say he has no mercy for his character. She knows she’s about to make a bad choice, but makes it anyway. At the screening, Perry said he wanted us to be ambassadors for the movie. He added that he wanted us to carry the message of the movie. Even if you make a bad choice, you always have a chance to redeem yourself. Thank goodness for that. But in his right vs. wrong world, it can be terribly difficult to come back from the abyss. I will say I enjoyed watching the stunningly talented Jurnee Smollett-Bell navigate her way through hell and back. I also think Vanessa Williams had the best line of the movie. Madea could not have said it better. But Lord, the women in this movie definitely had a hard luck life, all dependent on men who let them down. Then, there were the real life experiences shared by a panel of executive women including Rabbi Analia Bortz, also a medical doctor; Nita Sardana, vice president of American Cyber Systems; Alvetta Peterman Thomas, president of Atlanta Technical College; and Jannet Walker, vice president CH2MHill. The panel was moderated by Monica Richardson, managing editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In response to a question about barriers to leadership for women, Atlanta Tech’s Thomas said the job she has now would have been too demanding to do and raise her children at the same time. “Women get ill because of stress,” she noted. “It will kill you.” As a woman, she said she has learned to say no to things and, “give my best when I do say yes.” CH2MHill’s Walker added that in some cases, the “glass ceiling” that keeps women from breaking through has given way to the “sticky floor,” – including self- imposed barriers like picking family over career. And finally, the opera premiere had a lot of wonderful voices, but the plot unveiled a very bad ending for the lead woman. She was a devoted wife, sister to a special needs brother, but ultimately got played for a fool by her husband and an almost lover. It was classic operatic tragedy.
