6889 Rte. 215, Lower Selma On the edge of the bay, stand on the Park’s wharf for an expansive view of the rippling red sand of the Minas Basin exposed at low tide.

87 Main St., Stewiacke 902-639-2345 / mastodonridge.ca Halfway between the North Pole and the equator, you’ll see a large mastodon beckoning from the hill just above Exit 11. Especially popular with the kids, he’s a replica of a creature whose remains were found in 1991 not far from here.

Downtown Truro Shutterbugs will discover fine architecture and old churches throughout the designated heritage district, painted murals, and several tree sculptures depicting the town’s history.

Fundy Tidal Interpretive Centre 9865 Rte. 236, South Maitland 902-261-2250 Offering views of the red cliffs and the historical cantilevered Gosse Bridge, the observation deck over the Shubenacadie River also provides a panoramic view of the roiling tidal bore as the Fundy tides push against the out-flowing river. Eagles soar, fishing the incoming tide. Check tidal bore times.

Walton Lighthouse 119 Lorne Smith Rd., Walton Hants County’s last remaining lighthouse (built in 1873). Climb to the top and enjoy a panorama of the cliffs and the Fundy tides. A walking trail leads visitors through the woods to a shady look-off. On-site museum coming this year. Open May 15–Oct. 15.
