I WAS JUST THINKING...........

North Haven

I was just thinking about how I can convince you folks to vote in the Budget Referendum on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. All voting will take place at the Rec. Center between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM. PLEASE VOTE!!

When I served on the Board of Finance (BOF) from 1985-1989, there were no Referendums. Back then, the budget was voted on by the people at the Budget Town Meeting. This meant that the budget was adopted (never rejected) by approximately 100 people who showed up at the meeting. Most were town employees. It was not a very democratic system.

But along came a woman named Ann Rocco and she formed the North Haven Taxpayer’s Association. Using State law, she forced the Town to have a town-wide Referendum starting in 1991 and about 5,000 people voted. We’ve had Budget Referendums ever since. Since that time, approximately 20% of proposed budgets have been rejected, forcing the BOF to come up with a lower budget. One year, again in the early 90s, the budget was rejected 5 times!! Twice now, in 2010 and 2015, Mr. Freda’s proposed budget was rejected. Thanks to Mrs. Rocco, democracy has had a ghting chance here in North Haven. However, last year, only about 700 people voted in the Referendum. Mr. Freda and I have both publicly asked for a better turnout this year.

The proposed budget for the upcoming scal year will raise your taxes – a lot, by 8.1%. And remember, your taxes went up 6.3% this year. Ination has been blamed for these tax increases. But I have simply not seen such high increases in other Towns. Yes, many towns are increasing taxes but in the 3-4% range. Wallingford is the highest I’ve seen with a tax increase of 5.4%, still well below our 8.1%.

I believe we created too many new positions in recent years when we had federal pandemic money pouring in. That money is gone, and now the taxpayers must pay. Wages alone are up $1 million on the town side of this proposed budget (page 45). And other employee related line items like social security, pension and medical are also much higher. Everybody gets raises every year. One position in the Finance ofce has a $17,000 raise this year. (page 41).

Please review the budget. It is available on-line, at the Town’s website, click on Finance Dept., then Fiscal year budget 2024/2025. Make your own conclusions, but please vote on May 21st.

K of C May Family of the Month

Hamden: The Knights of Columbus Council 14664, has selected the Lucas Family as May’s Family of the Month.

Bill, Gail and their daughter Kerry have been active for many years in the SPVI parish (starting with St Joan of Arc then merging with OLMC). Bill and Gail have supported many of the activities involved with Social justice from packing up food for the Thanksgiving food drive to collecting bottles for babies (fundraiser). In the past with Kerry, they would make and deliver sandwiches to the New Haven homeless. Gail and Kerry have volunteered with Habitat for humanity. Each is always willing to share their time and talent with those in need. Bill is a Sacristan at OLMC, as well as EM and alter server. Bill is also the Retreat chairman for the annual Men’s retreat for OLMC attending for well over 25 years. Kerry currently is serving on the Parish Council and can be seen welcoming parishioners during weekend masses.

Whether together or separate, the Lucas’s who are avid runners can be seen not only on the Farmington Canal but running from one parish sponsored event to another- always willing to lend a hand as they continue to do God’s work.

NH Town Budget Needs to be Streamlined

To The Editor: May 15, 2024

North Haven has been a great place to live and to raise a family. We have enjoyed a lower tax base than our neighbors such as Hamden, Wallingford, West Haven and others. The town has always had good leadership and has been fiscally responsible, and residents have enjoyed a good quality of life.

Over the last two to three years, we have been faced with runaway inflation and unforeseen cost of living. Home and auto insurance have increased 35%, groceries 30-40%, gas and energy, well, you don’t need me to tell you. It costs an average of $11,000 more to run a household vs 2021.

The proposed town budget calls for an increase of 2.65 mills. This equates to an 8.1% increase. Just one year ago we had a 1.94 mill increase which equates to a 5.9% increase. That is a 14% increase in two years. Has the average North Haven household’s income increased that much in two years? In times like these we need to be more fiscally responsible than ever, and do not want to wind up spending recklessly as they do in Washington, DC. I recently retired from a company where last year we have a 30% reduction in the workforce. We all had to step to the plate and pick up the slack and were able to meet the demands of management.

Now, I’m certainly not asking for a 30% reduction, but what I am saying is we need to bring spending more in line and putting less strain on people’s budgets. East Haven proposed a budget with a 4.55% increase, and North Branford’s was at 3.9% which is more in line with the mainstream. I encourage everyone to vote No on May 21st to this budget and have the Board of Finance come back with a more reasonable budget, perhaps in the 4 to 5% range.

Prioritize Safety on Memorial Day

To The Editor: May 15, 2024

This Memorial Day, Americans will pause to honor the courageous men and women in uniform who gave their lives to defend our nation’s freedom and security. Whatever plans you have for the long weekend, we invite you to join all of us at Dichello Distributors, Inc. in celebrating our fallen heroes on May 27th and raising a glass in their honor. For many Americans, the long weekend also represents the start of summer gatherings, and unfortunately it has become one of the most dangerous times of year for drivers on our roads. If your plans involve drinking, remember to prioritize the essential thing that our service members fought to uphold: our safety and wellbeing. Drunk driving is 100% preventable and we can all do our part to keep our loved ones and neighbors safe by leaving the car keys at home.

Over the last 35 years, Anheuser-Busch and its wholesaler partners have invested more than $1 billion in community-based programs and initiatives to prevent underage drinking, impaired driving and other harmful uses of alcohol. All of us at Dichello Distributors are once again teaming up with Anheuser-Busch, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Uber to encourage all to Decide To Ride by planning ahead for a safe ride home if you are drinking.

Thank you for your support of this shared mission to put an end to drunk driving. We wish you a memorable and safe Memorial Day. Tony Lota, Alcohol Awareness and Education Coordinator Dichello Distributors, Inc., Orange, CT

Book Club Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Pictured (L-R): Members from Hamden, North Haven, and Wallingford, Starr O’Connor, Lori Borsari, Eileen Carpinella, Ellen D’Agostino, Lara Anderson, Sandi Hurd, Jeanne Harwood, Judy Donroe, Debbie Baser, Stephanie Kollet, Brenda Burt,Kathy DePasqual, Debby Surprise, Jackie Dunn, Jackie Church, Janet Reich, Kathy Imholt.

Hamden: Members of the “Are U Dunn Yet?” book club celebrated their twenty year anniversary recently at Cafe Amici in Hamden. The members, past and present, shared a meal and were entertained with a slide show of highlights of the group from the last twenty years. The event was organized by Debby Surprise and Jackie Dunn and the slide show was produced by Jackie Church.Book covers and favorite titles were displayed by Lara Anderson and Stephanie Kollet.

The group, started in 2004, when Jackie Dunn’s youngest child left for college and she discovered she had “free time”. Jackie called friends in Hamden and North Haven to invite them to start a book club with her. Jackie still keeps the group organized twenty years later. Over the years, members would see each other outside of book club and often ask, “Are You done with the book yet?” Thus, the group name evolved. Debbie Baser presented Jackie Dunn with a plaque and gift card for her dedication to the group. Members go above and beyond hosting meetings.

Meals reect the culture or time frame of the book being discussed, or are a duplication of food in the story. Some members have dressed for the book’s time period and decorated their homes in a tting ambiance. Occasionally, the meetings have been held at restaurants that reect the setting of the book. During the height of Covid, meetings were held outdoors or on Zoom.

The group has read and discussed 165 books across all genres, but the favorite and most often read genre is historical ction. The inaugural book was The Secret Life of Bees. Recent titles included The Covenant of Water, The First Ladies, and The Women. Now that most members are retired, the group expands their understanding of books with eld trips.

After reading The Personal Librarian , about Belle Green, the Black woman librarian hired in 1905 to expand and curate The Morgan Library and Museum in Manhattan, the group travelled to NYC and toured the Morgan Library and Museum.

Members and former members attending the celebration included Jackie Dunn, Jackie Church, Debby Surprise, Brenda Burt, Stephanie Kollet, Debbie Baser, Lara Anderson, Kathy DePasquale, Jeanne Harwood, Sandra Hurd, Janet Reich, Eileen Carpinella, Starr O’Connor, Ellen D’Agostino, Lori Borsari, Judith Donroe, and Kathy Imholt.

Question & Answer - Dr. Richard Durocher

Q: What is a bunion and what can be done about it?

A: A bunion is a bump that is present on the inside of your foot at the level of where the big toe is connected to the foot. It is actually a prominence of a bone at the great toe joint. In most people that great toe and attached bone are in good alignment, but in some people that bone points toward the other foot and the great toe points the other way. This can be painful as it progresses. The pain can be within that joint or on the bump itself. The bump may also have some redness and inammation caused by irritation from the shoe gear worn, due to the tightness of the shoes.

The bunion can develop slowly from an imbalance of the muscles and structure of the foot. Inherited foot types can also contribute to bunion formation. To help slow the progression of the bunion, orthotics (custom arch supports) may be recommended. Wearing wider shoes can take some pressure off the bump to relieve the discomfort. For moderate to severe cases or when it is very painful surgical intervention is recommended to relieve the pain and realign the great toe/joint.

Contact Dr. Durocher for further evaluation of this condition. Early Morning and Evening Hours Available 20

Affordable Mausoleum Options

A mausoleum is a type of above-ground tomb used to house the deceased. It is a free-standing memorial that offers a private resting and visiting place. Mausoleums can be indoor or outdoor and public or private. Mausoleums used to be reserved for the elite because the monuments required a large investment. But if you or your loved one prefer an above-ground resting place, there are more affordable options to consider. Public mausoleums are shared by many deceased within the same space. The higher up the crypt is within the public wall, the more affordable the space is. Alternatively, a public garden mausoleum offers an outdoor, open space for multiple tombs that are visited much like a gravesite.

Affordable Mausoleum Options

Burial or entombments in a mausoleum are just a couple of the choices available at North Haven Funeral Home. Cost will vary, depending upon the type of funeral services and merchandise selected. To learn about our funeral services, please call 203239-1179. Our facility offers three spacious parlors with the comfort and warmth of ones home. We are located at 36 Washington Avenue. Church Member Gives Beautiful Mother’s Day Speech

Pictured (L-R): Pauline McInnis, Reverend JP. Morgan.

North Haven: At the Montowese Baptist Church on mothers day, I surprised my wonderful friend Pauline McInnis by going to her church, she was making a speech honoring her mother and all mothers. She did a wonderful job saying how she had a great relationship with her mom and all the things her mom sacriced for her to have a wonderful life. It was a touching speech for all mothers not only for hers. Pauline went up to the altar after Reverend J. P. Morgan gave his sermon. We all sang and said prayers and had a wonderful feeling in our hearts after the speech and sermon. Delicious desserts and coffee were served after the mass. Pauline handles the thrift shop in the back of the church and all the money goes to the church. Thank you Pauline, Rev. Morgan and all the church members that make you feel welcome by their warmth and kindness. Everyone received a real rose and Pauline made a ower for all. God Bless All of you and our Mothers and Fathers for all they do for us everyday thank you.
