Chapter

On April 11th, three Zeta members -Past Presidents Carole Franceschet and Anne Brandt, and Corresponding Secretary Lorna Mangles -delivered a wide variety of new books for babies and toddlers to Mary and Joseph’s Place at the Village Medical Center in North Haven. This non-denominational support organization, administered by Mary Cornwall, provides both educational and material resources and gift baskets to mothers with new babies throughout their rst year of life.

There is strong evidence to show that children who are read to daily, beginning at birth, are more successful in school. With this newest book collection, Zeta Chapter continues its ongoing practice of donating items for children of all ages.

Mary and Joseph’s Place was very grateful for the generous donation. Upon receipt they were immediately able to include one of the books in a baby basket to a newly arrived client.

Women educators in any eld of education and at all stages of their professional careers are invited to inquire about membership in DKG, Zeta Chapter. Membership applications are currently being accepted from all interested educators.

North Haven Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs - April 27th

On Sat., April 27, from 10am2pm, the Town of North Haven and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will be teaming up once again to give the public the opportunity to prevent pill misuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Visitors are asked to bring medications for safe disposal to North Haven Fire Headquarters located at 11 Broadway.

The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. This is the 24th National DEA Takeback Day, with collection events taking place every April and October.

This is a drive through drop-off event. Visitors simply need to pull down the driveway of Fire Headquarters and drive around to the back of the building, where they will be greeted by staff to accept the medications. Visitors will be asked to remain in their vehicles and to hand the medications

through the window to the staff. Visitors are discouraged from exiting their vehicles or walking up to the disposal tables.

Vapes and other e-cigarette devices or cartridges are also now being accepted; please remove the batteries before dropping these items off for safe disposal.

Items that will not be accepted include syringes, needles or other sharps, inhalers, such as those for asthma, aerosol cans, mercury thermometers, iodinecontaining medications and illegal drugs or substances (including marijuana which is still a schedule 1 drug under federal law).

Please leave all medications in their original containers if possible. Cross out the person’s name with a black marker to ensure privacy.

For more information, please contact Carla Picard in Community Services at (203) 239-5321 x504.

levare, which literally means remove the meat. Specically, Carnival was the last occasion for meat consumption, as people abstained from it during the following forty days of Lent.

Laura and her husband Bob travelled with Bobbi Lane and her husband Lee Varis for a photo trip that was Out Of This World. People from all over the world travelled to Venice and dressed in costumes, masks and headpieces that many made themselves. Many of them cost more than $8,000. Some people even made multiple costumes to wear on different days. Bobbi and Lee taught us all the tips and techniques for achieving great photos. If you like to photograph people, this is a photo trip you would love to be part of.

“The people in costumes just want to be photographed. It is truly an incredible experience. You can walk around the streets and approach anyone and ask to take their photograph and almost always the answer is yes.

Our hotel was right near the Fish Market and Vegetable Market, about a 5 minute walk from the famous Rialto Bridge, then another 10 minute walk to St. Mark Square where all the people were posing in costumes.”

Laura grew up learning photography in the family photography studio and darkroom with her dad. She learned photography on her dad’s Rolleiex cameras. Then she photographed her rst wedding at 16 years old with her own Pentax K1000 and began photographing events for the Branford Review about the same time. Photography continued through high school and college and has continued through until today. They have travelled, since meeting Bob, to Iceland, Italy, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada and many other fabulous locations. Photography has brought them to many of these places that would have never been thought of to travel to without photography.

Laura invites all to come and join her as she shares her Venice adventure with the North Haven Camera Club. If you would like to attend please send an email to northhavencameraclub@gmail.com for more information.

North Haven Revaluation 2024GL

The Town of North Haven is starting work for the 2024GL revaluation of all real estate in the town, as mandated by Connecticut State Statutes. This revaluation is a statistical evaluation of all properties based on recent sales. Physical inspections will not be performed on all properties, only those that have made changes since October 1, 2023. It will be effective for the Grand List of October 1, 2024. The taxpayer will be notied in November 2024 of the new valuation. The new values will be included on the tax bills issued for July 1, 2025.

The Town of North Haven has contracted eQuality Valuation Services to assist the Assessor’s Ofce with this task. In the coming months, data collectors from eQuality will be visiting properties that have had building permits issued for their property.

Data collectors have been hired, trained, and will be supervised by eQuality. The data collector will carry an ofcial photo identication badge and will be registered with the Assessor’s Of-

ce and Police Department. The Town urges its residents NOT to allow anyone to enter their home without proper ID

Data collectors may ask permission to inspect the interior of the residence. They will verify the exterior measurements of the building on a property and may ask questions. If applicable, they will ask for verication of recent sales information. The data collectors will not be able to answer questions regarding value, assessments or taxes. Residents will be asked to sign the data collection form to verify that a data collector visited the property. If no one is at home, the data collector may measure the exterior of the buildings on the property.

Photographs of every property will be taken. There may be vehicles going throughout the town to do the photography. The vehicle will have a sign identifying it as an eQuality vehicle.

Property owners may call the Assessor’s ofce at (203) 2395321 or email at assessor@ northhaven-ct.us if they have any questions.

Hamden: On Saturday, April 13, “Make a Difference Day”, several volunteers from our Hamden Woman’s Club helped the House of Heroes CT kick off the 2024 season by assisting in the clearing of the yard of a very deserving 90-year old disabled Korean War veteran in Hamden. On this brisk, sunny day, they joined a large group of other HOH volunteers and lawn-care experts to help trim bushes, rake & bag leaves, remove weeds, clear gutters, and more, while professionals cut down the trees. Also, another group painted an enormous fence surrounding the perimeter of the back yard. Later, they helped load several big trucks with the tree cuttings, brush and trash. Result:: A beautiful transformation was made in just one day by volunteers working together, “Serving those who served”!

Later that day, our HWC President Zunny Martinez presented a generous check of almost $4,000.00 to Carol May, HOH Executive Director/Acting Chair. This donation was to be used by the House of Heroes to benet their honorable mission. This money represents one-half of our Hamden Woman’s Club’s prots from our Annual Fall Fundraiser, a fun and successful Murder Mystery Dinner, and the remaining proceeds will go to other worthy charities that the Hamden Women’s Club supports. We are very proud to support the House of Heroes CT in their dedicated mission!

The mission of HOUSE OF HEROES CT (HOHCT. org) is to recognize, honor and serve military and public safety veterans and their spouses who have served our country faithfully and sacricially. Volunteers have provided one-day, no-cost home repairs and improvements to more than 227 Connecticut military & public service veterans & their spouses since its founding in 2012. Their priorities are safety and accessibility. The CT chapter has provided assistance in 63 Connecticut cities and towns and the approximate value of services provided equals $100,000.00 from approximately 250 volunteers.

Hamden Woman’s Club, Inc., GFWC, is a civic, educational and social organization that was organized in 1950. We are proud to be a part of the largest volunteer organization in the world. We meet on the rst Wednesday of each month, from September to June, at 6:30 at the Hamden Miller Memorial Library Senior Center. Our Motto is “A Club that Cares & Shares”, as we provide needed services to our community in a great many ways. The HWC is open to any woman over the age of 18 who would like to volunteer in the greater community, develop new friendships, and have fun at the same time.

We encourage anyone interested in learning more about the HWC to call Carol Noble, at 203- 671-4536, Carolyn DellaPietra @ (203) 675-8444 or Shirley Cavanagh @ (203) 248-9726. Democrat Jen Pope Qualies for Public Financing in Race to Succeed D’Agostino in the 91st

Hamden: Jen Pope has surpassed the fundraising threshold to qualify for public nancing under Connecticut’s CEP program. Her completion time, under two weeks, is one of the fastest this year, establishing her as the frontrunner to succeed Rep. D’Agostino in the State House.

“Qualifying in under two weeks from when we announced is a testament to the support and grassroots organizing we’ve already built in this campaign,” Pope stated. “People in this District want a progressive, thoughtful voice ghting for them in Hartford, and I’m ready to take on the most challenging issues for our communities. Fighting for a more affordable Hamden for working and middle-class families, ensuring education funding is equitable, and making a woman’s right to choose a constitutional right in this state are all top priorities for my campaign. Over the coming months, I look forward to hearing directly from voters about what they want in their next Rep-

resentative and sharing my vision for our future.”

Jen Pope is a University of California--Davis graduate with a bachelor’s of science in psychobiology. She has two daughters, Lily, a Hamden High School sophomore, Abigail, a Hamden Middle School 8th grader, and a step-daughter, Isabelle, a John Jay University of Criminal Justice graduate student. Jen lives with her daughters and ance, Ernest Adamo, son of Joseph Adamo, former State Representative in the 116th District. Jen founded the Hamden Progressive Action Network in 2016 and has served as a Democratic State Central Representative since 2018. She currently works as a Clinical Research Manager at the Yale Cancer Center. She’s a former UNITE HERE Local 34 member and previously worked with veterans with mental illness to improve care delivery at the Department of Veterans Affairs before joining Yale.

The rst is the Spring DanceA Prom on Sat., May 18 at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church basement from 6:30-9pm for people with a disability over 18 years old. Music will be by DJ Brian Testa. The cost is $10.00 for Hamden residents and $15.00 for non-residents. A supper will be served, so please let us know of any special food requirements. NOTE: There will be no walk-ins allowed.

The second event is a Picnic for families with a person who has a disability at a Yard Goats Baseball Game. The code is $43.00, half of which the commission will pay for the disabled person’s ticket and for any family members between 4 years and 10 years old. It may seem like a high price, but when you consider a general admission ticket costs $21.00 without any food, and the picnic pavilion provides all-you can-eat for two hours, it’s a deal. Registration forms can be obtained at the Park and Recreation ofce in the Hamden Government Center on Dixwell Avenue.

WHAT IS A WAKE?

A wake is another term for a funeral reception where family and friends gather to remember a loved one. The word “wake” refers to the watch or vigil that mourners used to keep over the body between the time of death and burial. While wakes once used to focus on viewing the body prior to a funeral service, they are now often held after a funeral, burial, or memorial service. A wake is usually more casual than a funeral and focuses on people coming together to celebrate the deceased’s life. It is customary to come and go as you please. Food and drinks are often served, and sometimes a memorial activity is planned to honor the deceased.

North Haven Funeral Home offers personalized, professional, and compassionate services to you and your family. Our goal is to lessen alleviate you burden so that you can focus on celebrating your loved one’s life and beginning your journey towards healing. To learn more about the funeral services at our funeral home, please call 203-239-1179. You are welcome to visit our home at 36 Washington Avenue.

Wallingford Sheltie Earns AKC Agility Championship Title

ship points in the Master Standard class and/or the Master Jumpers with Weaves class.

A dog must exhibit superior performance on the agility course with speed and consistency being the two major qualities denoting “superior performance”.

This is how a MACH title is achieved:

One Championship Point (CP) is awarded for each full second (no partial points awarded) under standard course time (SCT) in each of the two classesMaster Standard and Master Jumpers with Weaves, with a dog earning a perfect 100 score in each class.

Example: A dog runs a course, scoring a perfect 100 and the SCT = 65 seconds and the dog runs the course in 42 seconds, the dog is awarded 23 CPs. However, if the dog ran the course in 42.05 seconds, the dog is awarded 22 CPs.

While accumulating the 750 championship points, the dog must also earn 20 Double Qualifying Scores (QQ’s). That is, dogs qualifying with perfect scores of 100 in BOTH the Master Standard class and the Master Jumpers with Weaves class on the SAME DAY = 1 (QQ).

Example: A dog runs the Master Standard Class and Master Jumpers

with Weaves classes and qualies with a perfect 100 score in each class-the dog earns 1 (QQ). However, if a dog runs the Master Standard class and qualies with a perfect 100 score but runs the Master Jumpers with Weaves class and does not qualify-earning a non-qualifying score (NQ), there is no QQ awarded.

Yes, this is challenging and hard work and TEAM MISSY accomplished and achieved this challenging title of MACH on March 23rd along with a QQ and another QQ on Sunday, March 24th = (4) perfect 100 scores in one weekend. Onward to MACH2 in which TEAM MISSY needs 713 championship points and only one QQ-we already have 19 QQ’s!

North Haven Garden Club April Meeting On Container Gardening

North Haven: On April 11th, the North Haven Garden Club held a meeting featuring speaker Gregory Bugbee on “Container Gardening Indoors and Out”. Greg holds a BS degree in Agronomy from UCONN. His expertise is in invasive aquatic plants, soil fertility, potting media, and composting. He is in charge of soil testing in CAES’s New Haven ofce, and works with the public to solve soil and water related problems. Growing plants in pots require different strategies from growing plants in the ground. Greg’s presentation focused on choosing the proper plants, fertilizing and watering, and starting plants from seed and cuttings. A few facts about what we refer to as potting soil. There is actually no soil in the mix, it contains a mixture of either peatmoss, vermiculite, styrofoam, and or coconut bers. This blend will hold moisture and more air which is better than plant soil, this is important for the root system of your plants. When planting indoors or in pots try to use taller pots instead of short pots, taller pots provide more air movement for the root system of the plant.

Before the meeting, North Haven Garden Club member Ellie Tessmer gave a short presentation on “Summer Flowering Bulbs”. Ellie shared the different types of bulbs available to plant with the club. Types of bulbs are True, Corm, Tuber, Tuberous root, and Rhizome. As always Ellie’s presentation was both interesting and informative.

Hostesses for the evening were Sandy Ginter, Angela Buzzelli and Lee Fermo with the table arrangementS provided by Mary Cameron and Maria Yankura.

Question & Answer - Dr. Richard Durocher

Q: What is a bunion and what can be done about it?

A: A bunion is a bump that is present on the inside of your foot at the level of where the big toe is connected to the foot. It is actually a prominence of a bone at the great toe joint. In most people that great toe and attached bone are in good alignment, but in some people that bone points toward the other foot and the great toe points the other way. This can be painful as it progresses. The pain can be within that joint or on the bump itself. The bump may also have some redness and inflammation caused by irritation from the shoe gear worn, due to the tightness of the shoes.

The bunion can develop slowly from an imbalance of the muscles and structure of the foot. Inherited foot types can also contribute to bunion formation. To help slow the progression of the bunion, orthotics (custom arch supports) may be recommended. Wearing wider shoes can take some pressure off the bump to relieve the discomfort. Pictured Top: Ginger with her children and other family members. Bottom: Ginger with her grandchildren, and Ginger with her birthday cake.

North Haven: North Haven resident Ginger Ballough enjoyed her wonderful 80th birthday celebration with many family and friends at the Libero Pensiero Society Club in Wallingford. On April 13, 2024, at 2:00 pm everyone waited for Ginger to arrive at the club and when she entered the club, everyone stood up, clapped, and yelled happy birthday. Ginger was so happy to see so many family and friends, she had a big smile on her face. She was greeted by many who hugged and kissed her, and her daughter Stacey escorted her to a table decorated with a white table cloth, and she was

seated at the head of the table with 80th birthday silver balloons tied to her chair. There was so much laughter and warm feelings in the room, everyone had a wonderful time. After an hour everyone went up to the buffet tables set up with delicious food, of a large fruit tray, tossed salad, ziti macaroni, chicken marsala. There was an open bar, many bottles of water, and soda. After everyone ate, a beautiful birthday cake with candles on it was set down in front of Ginger, everyone sang happy birthday and Ginger and her grandson blew out the candles. It was a wonderful 80th birthday celebration, Ginger we wish you many more with many blessings.

Hamden Knights Honor The Bartholomew Family

Hamden: The Bartholomew family has been honored as the April, 2024 Family of the Month by the Hamden Council #14664 of the Knights of Columbus.

Carmela and her husband Paul have a long history of being involved in Parish activities - being very active members of the St. Rita’s community since 1995. Since the inception of ALPHA in 2019 - both have shared their time and talents for both the in person as well as online sessions. Now that many parishioners have experienced the rewards of ALPHA - they are now involved in formulating

CONNECT groups to ultimately assist parishioners in discovering their individual charisms. Aside from their ALPHA focus, they continue their online weekly work with the Taize prayer group which now has been in place for the past 4 years. Both Paul and Carmela have also assisted in coordinating parish mission work that was held at St Rita’s. Paul was a former Parish Council member and Carmela currently is a member of the Leadership Council. Basically, they believe in serving in whatever ways they can - believe in living out their faith and forming a faith based community.

Please Do Not Kiss Your Fish!

We’ve all seen those T.V. fishing personalities who kiss their fish before the release. We all also have friends (or maybe have ourselves) kissed a particularly notable or special catch. From here on out, do yourself a favor -- don’t!

Studies have shown that kissing a fresh-caught fish can lead to the contraction of an annoying intestinal parasite, known as Giardia. This tough little parasite can lead to a lengthly battle with some not-so-pleasant side effects!

On the boat or fishing from shore, there are many ways of protecting yourself from the possibility of an infection. Besides not kissing a fish, use Purell or any of the other hand disintectants. Immediately clean any cuts or scrapes and keep your hands away from your mouth.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some people with Giardia infection never develop signs or symptoms but still carry the parasite and can spread it to others. For those who do get sick, signs and symptoms usually appear one to two weeks after exposure and may include: diarrhea, fatigue, nausea and weight loss -- as much as 10 percent of your body weight.

Signs and symptoms of Giardia infection usually improve in two to six weeks, but can become chronic, lasting for months or years. Medical intervention is the only sure way to eradicate the pest.

So as stated above, please refrain from that urge to lay one on that personal best bass, trout or pickerel and keep your hands and cuts clean to ensure a safe and healthy fishing season.

Sen. Cicarella Reacts to Beach Mayhem and Road Rage Shooting

State Sen. Paul Cicarella (RNorth Haven), ranking member of the Public Safety and Security Committee, has implored Majority Democrats to address the ongoing crime across Connecticut, including the recent violent gathering of a reported 2,000 people on West Haven Beach and subsequent shooting at a gas station in the town. Also, in Bristol, a man was shot in an apparent “road rage” incident.

“What we witnessed in West Haven should give everyone pause. Until recently, incidents like this would be beyond belief. Sadly, crime and violence in Connecticut have become the norm and it’s at a fever pitch. The same goes for incidents on our roads, where a similar ‘road rage’ incident turned deadly in Meriden earlier this year. When will enough be enough?

“Thank you to West Haven Police and Bristol Police for their professionalism. I hope that the two injured West Haven officers make a quick recovery. I again ask my colleagues to join me in making meaningful changes to our laws to restore deterrence for these crimes, and hold criminals accountable.

SMALL WELDING REPAIRS, FABRICATIONS from drilling or tapping a thread, to welding a lawn mower handle, to machining a bushing, to fabricating a bracket, or even repetitive job shop welding on a rotary positioner. Often it’s the small things that can present bigger issues. If I can help, I’d be happy to. All types of welding, TIG, MIG, Stick, Plasma cutting. Steel, cast iron or aluminum. Lathe and milling operations also. Retired welder, hobby shop, very reasonable. Call Joe, (203) 288-5832. BASEMENT WATERPROOFING: Install a permanent de-watering

Sen. Cicarella Reacts to “Surge” of CT Vehicle Thefts

State Sen. Paul Cicarella (RNorth Haven), ranking member of the Public Safety and Security Committee, has reacted to news of the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) report that revealed a 33 percent surge in vehicle thefts across Connecticut in 2023.

“Families and businesses in our district are not surprised at

this alarming statistic. I have heard from hundreds of people who have been a victim themselves or have a family member who’s been a victim. This trend is a result of bad policy that has eliminated nearly any consequence for the crime of motor vehicle theft, particularly for juveniles. I have and will continue to offer better solutions to restore deterrence to these oftentimes violent crimes. I encourage the majority to join me in addressing the true concerns of residents,” said Sen. Cicarella.
