Pastoral Letter Philippians 3:14 “So I run straight towards the goal in order to win the prize, which is God’s call through Christ Jesus to the life above.” T.E.V. The Summer of 2016 is crammed full of sport, test matches, Wimbledon, the Euro 2016 tournament, soon to be followed by the Olympics in Brazil. Athletes in whatever discipline, have been in strict training, ensuring that they reach their peak performance at the appropriate time. St. Paul, who wrote the verse above, was also in strict training to ensure that he was in daily readiness to be able to share his hope that was in ‘Christ Jesus’. Not that he was free, rather he was in prison, shackled to prevent his escape, yet able to dictate his concerns and hopes for the first Church he founded in Europe at Philippi, in modern day Greece. Even in prison Paul was to use his time ‘working out’ the sharing of his faith, so much so that even the whole ‘Palace Guard’ knew he was imprisoned because of his faith in Jesus Christ’. This Letter from prison, is full of a joy and confidence that can only be explained because Paul had a goal in this life, which was to tell others of the hope he had. What is your goal in life? Do you have one, or is your focus taken up with day to day concerns, of work, career, school, college, family life etc? It is easy to get caught up in the immediate, which can remove ones focus from the goal itself. This is true for athletes and all of us, unless we keep our eyes on the prize, whether that’s a medal or a cup. For Paul and countless Christians down the ages, the prize was, and is serving the Lord Jesus, living out our life of faith whenever we can and wherever we find ourselves and ultimately to receive the prize. “As for me (St. Paul), the hour has come for me to be sacrificed; the time is here for me to leave this life. I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance, and I have kept the faith. And now there is waiting for me the prize of victory which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who wait with love for him to appear.” St. Paul did not lose his focus on the goal, nor should we! Clive and Marion

Church News

Legacy from the Knight family Many of you will remember Laurence and Pat Knight who were faithful members of St Peter’s congregation over many years and always very generous both in terms of financial support and their personal commitment to our church. Clive, the son of Laurence and Pat, tragically died in 1990. Laurence sadly passed away at the end of 2007 and following the death of Pat in early 2015 the Wephurst estate was sold. During their times as incumbents of this parish both Rev. David Pike and Rev. Simon Newham supported Laurence and Pat, and worked closely with Laurence on a number of projects, some of which came to fruition during their lifetimes including the restoration of the South Porch which was funded in memory of Clive. Laurence took a particular interest in the earlier versions of the building project which we are about to undertake. Laurence and Pat left instructions that our church should benefit from an extremely generous bequest and we have recently received a very considerable sum which will be sufficient to cover the whole of the cost of the proposed building project and a significant part of potential future work. The parish, as the body of Christ in this place, thank God for their lifelong witness and generosity. Dr Graham Parr – Churchwarden Jamie Daniell – Churchwarden Rev Clive Jenkins - Vicar

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Wisborough Green Primary School News With only a few weeks left of the term, we are looking forward to lots of exciting events before the summer holidays. Rehearsals are underway for our Alice in Wonderland production and everyone is busy learning lines, making costumes and designing the set. Our Beatrix Potter Garden is blooming and we are nearly ready for the Billingshurst Rotary Club judges. If they are lucky they might even get to taste some of the delights we have been growing, especially the giant strawberries! Our year 6 children represented our school so well at the Village Market when they carried out market research in preparation for selling their own produce. Please come along to the next market day on Thursday 14 th July to see what we have to offer. The highlight of the month, for me, has to be the Summer Festival that was held on Saturday 11th June on the village green. It was my first summer event with the school and Wisborough Green certainly knows how to organise an amazing day! From the moment the May Queen and her team left the school, in the most beautiful vintage car, with a floral array of maypole dancers followed by a sea of Union Jacks, I felt a great sense of community spirit. That was just the beginning! Phoebe Foden, our elegant May Queen, gave the most moving and eloquent opening speech and brought a tear to my eye. Intricate patterns were formed as the maypole came to life. The girls worked so hard to weave the colourful ribbons with some exciting and challenging dances. Thank you Mrs Edson for all your hard work. Singing their hearts out, the Rock Choir shared some of their songs from a recent concert performed at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley. It really is a treat listening to the children sing and Mr Harder and Mrs Saunders have worked so hard with the children to produce a choir fit for Britain's Got Talent! As a school, we celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday with a performance of dance and drama choreographed by the children. The sun continued to shine all day and so did the smiles on everyone's faces. It really was a brilliant day and all made possible by the super, special PTA. In all my years working in schools; I have never seen a team of parents work so hard. I cannot thank everyone enough for all their support and energy to make the day so successful. I am very proud to be part of such a great community. We are hoping to purchase some iPads with the money raised for all the children to use in school so thank you to everyone who came along to join in the fun. The next few weeks are going to be busy for us as we start to plan ahead for September. We will be saying goodbye to our kind and caring year 6 children but feeling happy they are prepared for their next journey in life. They have all contributed so much to the school this year and we will miss their bright personalities and creative ideas. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at Wisborough Green Primary School and can't wait to see what next year brings. Warm regards, Amanda Harrison, Head Teacher, 01403 700280 12

From Porto to Santiago do Compostela My friend and I arrived in Porto on the north eastern cost of Portugal on a hot, sunny day in May and spent the afternoon worrying about how we were going to walk for the next 13 days in the heat. We didn't need to worry as the cloud rolled in the next day - Day 1 of our pilgrimage of 250km to Santiago di Compostela - and the rain arrived and stayed with us for much of the next 10 days. In fact the weather was so bad it made the national news in Spain and Portugal. Some days we paddled along the tracks, which had turned to streams and discovered that our fully waterproof boots weren't! We had decided to take the coastal route to just north of Vigo (where we were joined by 3 more friends) before we veered off into countryside northwards to S di C through beautiful, very lush countryside. Much of the coastal route was along boardwalks in amongst the dunes with large waves crashing against the rugged coastline to our left and through seaside villages and towns where there were very few pilgrims. Sometimes the way marker yellow arrows and shells were few and far between, which could be rather a challenge. This changed once we had crossed the estuary of the Rio Mino from Portugal to Spain where it was well signposted. The crossing was an interesting experience because we discovered, having walked through pouring rain all morning to the ferry point, it wasn't running that day. We were advised to walk another 3km along the beach where we would find Mario who would take us in his boat. Fortunately the sun came out at this point and we found Mario who said he would ferry us across after he'd had his lunch. After we'd all had some lunch he bailed the water out of his very small boat and we clamoured in along with an Irish couple we had met and we chugged across the river. As the current was so strong with the tide coming in he couldn't use the jetty, so beached the boat and we were all very relieved to jump out to continue our walk in Spain. Fortunately many of the villages had small cafes where we were able to get a coffee and custard tart or a rustic lunch to sustain us and gave us a welcome sit down in the dry. When the sun did come out the walk was transformed and cheered us no end giving us a spring in our step. We met many interesting people from all over the world who had come to walk ‘The Camino’, stayed in a variety of hostelries, crossed many rivers, fell in love with northern Portugal and Spain, got very tired, sore feet, but it was a wonderful experience with a great sense of achievement. Santiago di Compostela is a fabulous city with a spectacular cathedral and well worth visiting even if you don't walk there! Helen V 13

Nature Notes A month of news – a lot of it good, some not so good. Firstly, the orchids in the lane have survived the dreaded council mowers. They just missed ‘em – hooray! And what may be a Heath Spotted orchid has mysteriously appeared not far from our old shed out the back. We had some chippings put in the little field years ago when we had ponies, because of the mud. The stones came from Bedham, and there are many similar orchids up there. So has a seed come down and lurked in the ground till now? Nature biding its time and surviving, yet again? We had a big crowd of starlings on the grass by the feeders yesterday. About thirty, many of them with babies chasing and fluttering for food. And a cheeky crow took a shower last week perched on a beanpole as we sprayed our runner beans. He was definitely enjoying it, ruffling his feathers and doing the odd preen! Also, after several frogless years, joy of joys, I’ve seen at least three so far in our pond, so fingers crossed for them... Further afield, there are four peregrine youngsters at Chichester Cathedral all doing well so far, which is amazing! There are telescopes set up and the birds are viewable until the second week in August. Here’s a link https://youtu.be/_Q87UA6dGq0 (thanks to our Ed!) There is also a raven’s nest up in Bedham, and another peregrine nest at the Quarry there too, with chicks this year, we think. All really good – but now some bad news. The company working up there plan to take down a big section in August, including this nest. So these birds would be homeless next year. Could a compromise be reached – with a reasonable sized piece of the quarry edge left upright, or even a pinnacle, with the nest intact? I’d really like to think so!! These birds are heavily protected, surely? Also, the other day, Peter sadly found two hedgehogs dead on his patio. They were badly mauled, and I picked up another next day, in a similar state, alongside the A272 directly in a line down from his house. Maybe the culprit was a badger, who was disturbed? Any other ideas, anyone? Back to good news – I’ve seen a goldcrest twice, so maybe they’ve settled for one of our leylandii. Hooray again! And our wildflower field is really coming along – a swathe of campion earlier and now it’s awash with ox-eye daisies. Peter sent me this picture of a handsome cinnabar moth on r a g wo r t n e a r P u l b o r o u g h . Ragwort’s a toxic plant for horses and cattle, so in places needs controlling, but the caterpillars love it. Also very toxic are the water dropwort or hemlock plants that have taken over from the cow parsley in our lanes. They do look similar, but the flower heads are much more rounded. Attractive, but treat them with caution. Great news to end. July 15th -Village Hall – Illustrated Talk on Dragonflies. And August 15th - Bat Walk and Talk - both highly recommended! Sue J

Can you give an hour of your time to our fabulous August Bank Holiday Fete? Many of you are no doubt planning on attending Wisborough Green’s annual village fete on 29th August. The fete is totally reliant on volunteers to organise and run it and we are a very small team! If you are around on the Bank Holiday weekend, please consider helping us out; you only need give an hour of your time and it really does make all the difference to us. You could help us set up the night before or put up marquees early on fete day. You could help out on one of our stalls or join in organising the fun dog show or the family races. At the end of the day we would love to have a few energetic helpers to join the clear up operation. It really is good fun – honestly – and we even throw in refreshments! To find out more or to volunteer please contact Louise on 01403 700689 or email clerk@wisboroughgreenpc.org

WANTED! New Drivers / Escorts for the Wisborough Green Minibus We are a branch of the West Sussex Community Minibus Association, which is a charity completely run by unpaid volunteers. We have our own Ford Transit minibus, which is used twice, sometimes thrice, weekly to collect our member passengers from their homes and take them out – sometimes for essential shopping, sometimes for social reasons. Our operation of the Village Minibus is entirely due to the commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteer drivers and escorts, and I should like to take this opportunity to thank them for the time and effort they have so generously given to ensure that this service continues. I should very much appreciate hearing from anyone who feels they could devote one or two mornings (or an occasional afternoons) a month to help maintain our service to those who otherwise might become progressively more isolated – the minibus can become a lifeline to some, being their only means of transport, and, in many cases I hope it is also a great source of friendship. If you could find the time to help, I should be very happy to hear from you, and will explain what is required. Thank you. Pat Farmer E: farmerpatricia@btinternet.com T: 01403 700492 17

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice We haven’t had a NW page for a couple of months so here is a round-up of what’s happening with some useful advice applicable to everybody.

Phishing Campaign Targeting University Students A new phishing campaign which has hit students of UK universities claims that the student has been awarded an educational grant by the Department for Education. The email purports to have come from the finance department of the student’s university and tricks the recipient into clicking on a link contained in the message to provide personal and banking details. One victim reported that after submitting their sensitive information (including name, address, date of birth, contact details, telephone provider, bank account details, student ID, National Insurance Number, driving licence number and mother’s maiden name), they were taken to a spoofed website which appeared like a genuine website of their bank, where they were asked to type in their online banking login credentials.

Protect Yourself:  Do not click on any links or open attachments contained within unsolicited emails.  Do not reply to scam emails or contact the senders in any way.  If an email appears to have come from a person or organisation you know of but the message is unexpected or unusual, contact them directly via another method to confirm that they sent you the email.  If you receive an email which asks you to login to an online account via a link provided in the email, instead of clicking on the link, open your browser and go directly to the company’s website yourself.  If you have clicked on a link in the email, do not supply any information on the website that may open. If you think you may have compromised the safety of your bank details and/or have lost money due to fraudulent misuse of your cards, you should immediately contact your bank, and report it to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk or calling 0300 123 2040.

The best defence again burglary is prevention.  Make your home look occupied by asking a trusted relative, friend or neighbour to check your home, collect mail and water plants.  Don’t leave your curtains closed in the daytime as this shows the house us empty.  Use automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it’s dark.  Cancel regular deliveries such as newspapers and milk.  Avoid discussing holiday plans on social media.  Put all your tools including ladders away so they can’t be used to break into your home.  Don’t forget to shut and lock all external doors and windows removing and hiding the keys.

Farm Watch Update The number of animals loose on the highway every month is disappointingly high with 42 sheep and 26 horses reported in one week alone. Remember to check fences, hedges and gates daily to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

General Farmyard Security:  Restrict access to your yard. Install gates and fix them to a sturdy concrete or metal post. Keep locked.  Make your plant and equipment less attractive to thieves by making it more distinctive. Use livery stickers or paint your plant and equipment in corporate colours. Security devices such as Datatag marking or trackers should be considered as an option.  Keep a register of plant and equipment, noting serial numbers, markings colour etc. Photographs are also a useful way of recording the scale of items.  Store your tools and smaller machinery items in a building with enhanced security features close to the farmhouse.  Fencing, hedges and walls should be robust, well maintained and checked regularly for breaches.  Consider installing an alarm in vulnerable areas. An alarm will emit an audible warning and CCTV will provide surveillance on places out of view of the farmhouse.  Illuminate areas which are overlooked from the dwelling or covered by CCTV. If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999. Regards, Priscilla Pinkham 21

Village ‘Moans & Groans’ Page Well here we go again having received several words of encouragement on last month’s village page here are a few more, Does and Don’ts and Moans and Groans about things that go on in the village and nobody talks about. I have received several moans about the McDonalds litter problem in both the Kirdford road and Durbans road it would appear that somebody is throwing empty McDonalds boxes and wrappers out of the car window in roughly the same spot several times a week. I have contacted McDonalds and they say they can’t be responsible for litter throwing but do run a litter picking service from their local restaurants. When I explained it was 6 miles to the nearest restaurant they declined to pick the rubbish up saying it was too far away. Please keep eyes open and if you see rubbish being thrown take the number and make of car and time of day please. Another moan was the parking in front of the Cricketers Arms which I am sure is going to be an ongoing problem in the village for some time to come. I know the parish council is looking for alternative parking solutions in and around the village. Please DO give consideration to other road users when parking around the village especially around road junctions where visibility becomes an issue. Having just come back from a 2 week break in Sicily my Dos and Don’ts for this month have to be: DO pick up any litter and place it in a bin and DON’T drop it or let it blow away. We have a great collection and recycling service in this country as long as the rubbish is in the bin in the first place. From last month can I remind you to report a pothole at this link: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/report-a-problem-with-a-roador-pavement/ They will not get repaired unless we report them. One final GROAN - an eagle eyed resident spotted that the Union Flag used in the Parish Council’s “Keep Calm” commemorative photo poster reproduced in the Ad Vincula magazine last month was actually upside down and showing distress. I am not sure where the picture has come from but I have checked it out and Yes it is well spotted Peter. More info and moans next month let’s get our village cleaned up in the meantime. If you have something you want to get off your chest do email me at : kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk Ken V

QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY WG Primary School Summer Festival A RIGHT ROYAL OCCASION There can be no doubt about how much the village enjoyed the Wisborough Green School Festival this year. It really was a memorable occasion for all. The weather was exceptionally kind to us as other parts of the area were doused in torrential rain, and the crowds came out in huge numbers to enjoy the royal festivities. The festival kicked off in traditional style with the children parading from the school led by this year’s May Queen, Phoebe Foden, who opened the festival with an amazing speech. This was followed by some splendid maypole dancing and the school’s Rock Choir in fine voice. VMA Dance Academy and Wisborough Green’s own Glee Choir added to the entertainment, before the village came together for the historic commemorative photo to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. There was lots to do for everyone, and we had some amazing entries for our Right Royal Bake Off which was made particularly special by the appearance of a very special royal visitor indeed – her Majesty in person! Very many thanks to Mrs Turrell for making their day so special by gracing the stall and presenting the prizes. We hope everyone enjoyed their day, we are sure that everyone’s generous support has raised lots of money for the school, and we would like to say a very special thank you to the Cricket Club & Sports Pavillion, the Parish Council, Tim Skinner at the Three Crowns, Brian Smith for parking facilities, Ad Vincula of course, plus all of our generous donors, sponsors, advertisers and supporters for their efforts. Anybody wishing to make a donation to the school, can do so at our JustGiving page – we are currently raising money to equip the school with the latest computer equipment essential for the children’s learning. https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/wisboroughgreenschoolpta WGSPTA 26

CELEBRATION WEEKEND Thank you for a fabulous turnout! Against all British traditions, the sun was shining and the rain held at bay, for a wonderful event on the village green organised by the Wisborough Green Primary School PTA. That, and the commemorative photo, organised by your Parish Council as a memento of the Queen’s 90th birthday. At precisely 3pm everyone gathered on the green as the plane flew overhead and captured a wonderful moment of village life. The results are pretty amazing and you can now download your own copy of the main photo (see centre pages overleaf) as well as having a look at the others that were taken; visit the village website (www.wisboroughgreen.org). We’ll also be sending a commemorative copy to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as well as giving a copy to the West Sussex Records Office. Once again thank you to everyone who made the photo event possible, including the WGPS PTA, the festival compères and, of course, you! WG Parish Council

Sunday 12 June at St Peter’s Thank you to all who were involved with our celebration on Sunday 12th June. Our Time For God service, ‘A Royal Special’, was well supported and many crowns were created, royal cakes decorated, ‘love your neighbour’ cards written and stamps built up a collage of Her Majesty. The afternoon saw many folk attend the Vicarage for a Garden Party, where good conversation was had along with a cream tea and choice of cakes. Thank you to all who helped decorate the marquee and the garden with bunting, balloons and flags and to those who baked and served the teas, tastefully dressed in red, white and blue! The day concluded with a service of Songs of Praise, which included many well-known hymns and anthems with a royal flavour. Thank you to Malcolm and choir for their contribution! 27

Recipe of the Month

Pepper, tomato and basil pasta (BBC Good Food Recipe) A gorgeous supper dish inspired by flavours from the Mediterranean - roasted peppers, tomatoes and a simple basil sauce. Serve with your favourite pasta. Preparation time - less than 30 mins. Cooking time - 30mins to 1hour. Serves 4 Ingredients  3 peppers, red, yellow or orange  handful cherry tomatoes  2 cloves of garlic, peeled  4 tbsp olive oil  large bunch basil  400g/14oz pasta shapes (orecchiette is nice)  salt and pepper Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Halve the peppers lengthways, trim out the seeds and membrane. Lay them in a fairly large roasting tin facing upwards. Halve the cherry tomatoes and place them inside the peppers. Finely slice the garlic and tuck them in with the tomatoes. Drizzle the peppers with olive oil, season, to taste, with salt and freshly pepper. Bake in the oven while you get on with the basil oil. 3. Set aside a few sprigs of basil and blend the rest in a food processor with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and a little salt until you have a bright green basil oil. 4. When 30 minutes or so have passed and the peppers and tomatoes are beginning to soften, pour over the basil dressing. Return to the oven for a further 20 minutes or until the vegetables are slightly charred around the edges. Lift the peppers and tomatoes out of the tray with a slotted spoon and set aside. 5. Cook the pasta in boiling salted water according to the packet instructions. Drain. 6. Tip the cooked, drained pasta into the roasting tin, and stir well to scrape up any caramelised peppers stuck to the pan. 7. Serve the pasta in bowls, tearing in the remaining basil. Spoon the roasted peppers and tomatoes on top.

Wisborough Green History - FROM With the workhouse completely empty, work commenced on the conversion to the village hall. The first photo shows the rather forlorn and derelict building awaiting conversion in 1954. The south wing that was demolished shortly afterwards can just be seen.

The second photo shows a stage in the demolition. Of note is the fire escape to the first floor flat and the massive chimney breast that housed the range used by the workhouse cooks and latterly the school canteen dinner ladies. The vertical cut-out of the wall on the right shows where the end wall of the current hall and maisonette was to be. The part to the right of the cut-out is the unsafe part of the south wing that was demolished shortly afterwards. The main wall of the hall only survived for another 22 years as it too was demolished to allow the hall to be widened in 1977. (Continued on page 33)

32

POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 14 (Continued from page 32)

After the demolition was complete, the following rebuilding work took place:  The original poorhouse was converted into the village hall by removing the canteen and the first and attic floors  An entrance hall was built on the south side of the western extension.  The open end of the remaining part of the south wing was bricked in and windows provided for the workhouse staircase area that remained.  The canteen entrance door was removed and the original window was reinstated (see last month's issue)  The first floor flat entrance became the fire escape. The architect was Mrs M Parish and the builders were Allfrey and Co. of Pulborough. The official opening of the new village hall was 8th September 1956. A second rebuilding was undertaken shortly afterwards in 1957; the tasks performed were:  The provision of two one-bedroom flats in the first and second floors of the remaining part of the south wing. It had been intended that a two-bedroom maisonette was to be provided but Barbara Wyatt, part of the Village Hall Committee, paid for the reconstruction work of the flats provided that two separate flats were provided.  Removal of the dormer window on the east roof  The demolition of the workhouse keeper’s cottage  The conversion of the yard into a car park. To be concluded next month. Richard B. 33

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Dead-head annuals and perennials to avoid self-seeding and to encourage prolonged flowering.  Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for over-wintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials.  Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best.  Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. Feed weekly with dilute tomato fertiliser.  Start harvesting garlic and overwintered onions, freeing up ground for other crops. I’ll be planting my late flowering Dahlias in these beds.  Harvest marrows and courgettes regularly to encourage a continued supply.  Watch for blackfly on your broad beans, pinching out affected growing tips.  Spray tomato plants and potato foliage with Bordeaux mixture to prevent blight. Take a look at www.blightwatch.co.uk where you can register for blight warnings in your area.  Use untreated grass clippings as a mulch around most vegetables plants to suppress weed growth. They will eventually rot in and help feed your crops.  Peg down runners on your strawberry plants to provide more plants for next year. If you don't need extra plants simply remove the strawberry runners completely.  Prune your plum, apricot, peach and cherry trees now. Pruning these species in the summer reduces the risk of these trees getting silver leaf disease.  Check the leaves of gooseberry bushes for sawfly larvae, which can completely strip the foliage in a matter of days. Jet them off with water or pick them off by hand.

Wey & Arun Canal Trust News ‘LAST PUSH’ FOR CANAL BRIDGE APPEAL A ‘LAST PUSH’ appeal is being made to complete a new bridge which will allow a section of historic canal to be re-opened. Wey & Arun Canal Trust is seeking to raise £120,000 to finish the crossing in Alfold, its largest restoration scheme so far in Surrey. With volunteers now busy on the final stages of construction work, the Trust has calculated this amount is needed for the completion of the Compasses Bridge project. The bridge is on the waterway’s Summit Level, at one of the entrances to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex. Replacing a 1930s concrete causeway which blocked the canal, it was opened to traffic at Easter. “The Trust is launching this new ‘last push’ appeal so that we can complete this project by the end of the year,” said Trust Chairman Sally Schupke. Work started at the bridge site a year ago. Volunteers are currently laying facing bricks on the concrete shell and demolishing the causeway, with jobs to be finished including landscaping and building a public viewing platform. The bridge will be officially opened on Sunday, October 2 nd, as part of celebrations marking the Wey & Arun Canal’s bicentenary. Around a mile of waterway will be available to navigation by small boats, towards Tickner’s Heath at Dunsfold and going up to the A281 in Alfold. “We hope that the public will respond generously and help us complete the project in 2016,” added Ms Schupke. “Then our teams can move on to the next restoration project and keep up the momentum of bringing a 23-mile green corridor back to life.” Donations can be m ade via the hom e page of www.weyandarun.co.uk; or by sending a cheque made out to the Wey & Arun Canal Trust to Compasses Appeal, WACT Northern Office, Bridge End, Somerswey, Shalford, Guildford, Surrey GU4 8EQ. The Trust asks that eligible donors Gift Aid the money they give, which adds 25p from the Government to every £1 – declaration forms available via the website if required. WI Report On 2 June our monthly meeting was back in our usual venue, the Village Hall. “My Life and Works” was the title given to her talk by Julie Round, a local author from Worthing. She talked about how she came to be a teacher, how she met her husband and the various moves around England due to his work. Ideas for her books were inspired from her life experiences and she explained the process of self-publishing and all it entailed. We next meet on 7 July, at 8 pm, when “Confessions of a Sword Swallower” is Fred Delius' talk – visitors are welcome to come along to join us to find out what these confessions turn out to be! Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for May was 33mm (59mm last year – my 8 yr average is 54mm). Lowest temperature was -5.6°C at Tulloch Bridge, Inverness-shire and the highest was 22.7°C at St James’ Park, London. Apparently June 1st was colder than Christmas Day! Sunshine was only 92% of the 1981-2010 mean. Weathervane

CYBER TIPS It’s worth reiterating my very first Cyber Tip Because it is still happening. Have you wondered how scammers get hold of your e-mail address and use it in an attempt to beguile other people into parting with their money? Well, it might be your own fault! You could certainly be guilty if you send e-mails to multiple addressees and place them all in the “To” or “CC” (Carbon Copy) windows. This will mean that all recipients receive all the addresses. On the other hand if you send the e-mail to yourself and place all the addressees in the “BCC” (Blind Carbon Copy) window, each addressee will see only their own. Why is this important? Imagine that you send an e-mail to ten people using the “To” window and those ten people send it on to ten more recipients and this happens just six times, one million people will have received the e-mail and it is quite possible that one of those is less than honest or, at least, passes on those addresses to someone else who is a scammer. The scams work like this: Joe Smith’s e-mail address is joesmith@hotmail.com but you have him entered in your address book as Joe Smith. The scammer registers a new e-mail address as imascammer@yahoo.com and uses this address to send out e -mails in the name of “Joe Smith” so that it recognises the Joe Smith in your Address Book. If you open Joe Smith’s address by clicking on his name in the scam e-mail it will read joesmith@hotmail.com. But if you click the reply button and then click “Joe Smith” you will see imascammer@yahoo.com.

Never even reply to email scams let alone follow their instructions! Peter Edmonds

Village Hall 50 Club Draw The winner of the June draw is Peter McLaughlin who wins £75.00 The winner of the second prize of £20.00 is Tim Harris The July draw will be at the Cricketers at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 6 July 2016 and if any member or prospective member would like to attend they will be very welcome.
