Pastoral Letter Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days and at the end of them he was hungry. Luke 4:1-2 Well, that’s an understatement if there ever was one. Not even Bear Grylls would want to contemplate forty days without food! Jesus was pushing his physical body to its limits. The reason for this is that he was to begin his ministry of teaching, preaching, healing and casting out evil spirits. Oscar Wilde once said “the only thing I cannot resist is temptation.” This seems to hold true for many in our world today where the excess of food, drink and drugs can cloud the senses, so that there is a perceived perpetual need for more and more. Jesus was, himself confronted by the greatest tempter of all as the devil sought to prevent Jesus even beginning his ministry. The three temptations could equally be used today. “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” We all require our daily bread and we pray that in the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us today our daily bread.” Yet the devil would like us to ask and crave for hourly cake! This is possible today for so many of us in our consumer society where retail outlets provide mountains of consumables. Just look around you when you next visit a supermarket! Jesus responded to the devil’s temptation by saying, “It is written: man shall not live on bread alone.” (Deuteronomy 8:3). Secondly Jesus was tempted with power and control. The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their wealth saying, “I will give all this if you worship me.” We all seek power in our own lives, even if it is only in the little things. But imagine what you could do if you had authority over others, would it really be all it promised to be? Or instead it could become a living nightmare of control and manipulation, trying to ensure you always come out on top. However, Jesus responded by saying that it was only God himself who deserves our worship and praise: “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.” (Deuteronomy 6:13). The final lie from the devil was to even question Jesus’ motivation and existence, “If you are the Son of God.” Many people today question their own existence and selfworth, asking what life is all about, whether there is purpose in ‘my’ existence. Jesus responds by saying, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” (Deuteronomy 6:16). Christianity teaches that we are created in the image of God to worship him, serve him and enjoy his presence for ever. This promise continues even after death for those who follow in the footsteps of his Son Jesus. During Lent we hope to do just this, exploring what it means to follow the carpenter from Nazareth, both in our services and in the studies in our home groups. Do come and join us for a Lent Course. Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. From the Editor Welcome to the February 2016 edition of Ad Vincula. In addition to the usual articles this month, we have repeat pleas for additional volunteers to help run the fete (p12) and for more drivers/escorts for the Minibus (p13) - both very important village institutions. We have advance notice of the rescheduled Roger Moorey Memorial Concert (p17), a report of the Sideshows Society Senior Citizens New Year Dinner with pictures (p21-23) and a fascinating description of a road trip to the South of France via the Alps (p34). There are certain months where I like the picture on the cover to reflect the relevant Christian festival - e.g. December - the Nativity. Other than these special months, I try to use a local picture that reflects or is relevant to that particular month. Wisborough Green Primary School News Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No! We believe Wisborough Green Primary School was invaded by fire breathing creatures over the Christmas break! After an eventful end to the year we were expecting to return to a calmer and quieter school but that was not to be. The children found evidence that led them to believe the school had been taken over by dragons in the holidays. Large eggs had been laid and left in classrooms along with destruction and chaos. After tidying up the children began their quest to discover the truth about the mystery visitors in school. Watch this space for more information. After overcoming the shock of the dragons some of the children returned to school to find themselves stranded on an island. They had to use their excellent collaborative skills to send messages in bottles and build shelters for their base, to survive the experience. The journey continues to develop a new home on a land far, far away. This year also sees the introduction of the ukulele. The children and teachers were very excited about the arrival of these new instruments and we can't wait to hear our ukulele band in action. Down to the forest went some more children, squelching through the oozing mud, to light a camp fire. Our Forest School continues with a new group of children this term. They will learn about the wonders of the world outside the school building. This also gives the children the opportunity to develop the vital life skills they need to be successful citizens in the future. As we continue on our exciting maths improvement journey we opened our doors to share the fantastic new resources we have with parents. All classes have Numicon maths resources to support learning in class and they really are very popular. It was great to see the children teaching their parents how the Numicon helps them whilst having so much fun. This term promises to be full of many exciting experiences which we are all looking forward to. If you would like to share our love of learning then there are many ways you can support us. We are currently looking for people to come and listen to children read and would love to invite members of the local community in to school to help. If you feel you can offer some time then please contact the school office or pop in and see us. We are also looking for an additional community governor and would be interested to hear from you if this is something you can help us with. It is a very important role and we are looking for someone, independent of the school, to support us on our exciting journey. Wisborough Green Fete Society – Needs your help! It might not be the rain that stops the Fete this year…..we really need new members to join the organising committee in order to ensure that this fantastic village tradition continues. What would the August Bank Holiday be like with no more village Fete! We are a friendly and fun group of local people. We meet 5 or 6 times a year in the pub (of course!) to keep abreast of the event planning, there is some work to be done between meetings and you would ideally need to be available on the August Bank Holiday weekend. It isn’t that onerous but we do need volunteers who have some time to take on some of the organising and planning tasks. WANTED! New Drivers/Escorts for the Wisborough Green Minibus We are a branch of the West Sussex Community Minibus Association, which is a charity completely run by unpaid volunteers. We have our own VW 6seater minibus, which is presently used twice-weekly to collect our member passengers from their homes and take them out – sometimes for essential shopping, sometimes for social reasons. Our operation of the Village Minibus is entirely due to the commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteer drivers and escorts, and I should like to take this opportunity to thank them for the time and effort they have so generously given to ensure that this service continues. I should very much appreciate hearing from anyone who feels they could devote one or two mornings (or sometimes afternoons) a month to help maintain our service to those who otherwise might become progressively more isolated – the minibus can become a lifeline to some, being their only means of transport, and, in many cases I hope it is also a great source of friendship. KKWG Update March 11th 2015 was the date on which the Oil/Gas company Celtique Energie withdrew from the Public Inquiry which had been initiated when they appealed the unanimous refusal by West Sussex County Council to permit their application for an Exploratory drill on land to the south of Boxal Bridge right on the Parish borders of Kirdford and Wisborough Green. To mark the occasion we felt that the Parishes could use the day to launch joint initiatives involving the local heritage and wildlife. With that in mind we have invited Michael Blencowe, People and Wildlife Officer, based at the Sussex Wildlife Trust to come and talk to us about the marvellous wildlife which thrives in our particular area of West Sussex and part of which is now included within the South Downs National Park. Michael has a reputation for making his talks very enjoyable occasions and will talk on The Wildlife of Kirdford and Wisborough Green. After Michael's talk we will have a brief discussion about how we can, working cooperatively as neighbouring communities, continue to safeguard our local environment. Any dormant fuchsias that you’ve over-
wintered in the greenhouse can be put on the staging so that they are in full light and given a misting of water to encourage them to start wakening up.
This is your last chance to winter prune that wisteria. Really! Check stored dahlia tubers, discarding any that have rotted. Move the
tubers into a light, warm place and they’ll soon come into growth.
Start planning this year’s bedding display. Time to plant antirrhinums,
marigolds, begonias, cosmos, lobelia petunias and pansies from seed.
Hopefully you’ve been saving egg boxes to use for chitting your seed
potatoes. If not then a seed tray or similar will do. Chit them now for planting from mid-March onwards.
Sow windowsill crops of salad leaves and herbs. Start planting Broad Beans, Brassicas, Carrots, Parsnips and onions. Indoors sowing of tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies and peppers. Plant new fruit trees and continue to prune those that are already
established.
ROGER MOOREY MEMORIAL CONCERT 2016 Some of you will remember the concert held in November 2014 in memory of Roger. He was a joyous musician who played his clarinet and sax in St Peter's, rock groups, the Slinfold Concert Band and later the Riverboat Shuffle jazz band. I am thrilled to say that the Glee Singers and Riverboat Shuffle have agreed to another concert on Saturday March 12th at 7pm in church, in aid of St Peter's and Family Support Work. We are also hoping for musical contributions from Malcolm and the choir – and from other friends. Hopefully the Moorey ensemble will also play. Wisborough Green Sideshows Society New Year Dinner 16 January 2016 Each year the Sideshows Society hosts a New Year Dinner for the retired members of our village and this year was no exception - other than we gave the dinner a 007 Theme. M was there so were Q and Miss Moneypenny and lots and lots of James Bonds as well as a number of Bond girls. On January 16th eighty people attended our Dinner – Phil and Sandra from “Pimpernel Events” transformed the village hall into “Casino Royale” with the round dinner tables dressed to look like roulette wheels with huge Martini glasses filled with Bond’s favourite tipple as centre pieces thus creating an amazing ambiance.
On arrival our guests were treated to a champagne reception, shaken - not stirred of course. This was followed by a threecourse meal with wine plus a selection of cheeses accompanied by port, gin or whisky and, finally, tea, coffee and mints. I think you will agree a sumptuous feast. This was an amazing meal for which we cannot really take credit; it was completely sourced, cooked and supplied by “The Three Crowns”. Tim Skinner has been absolutely brilliant with his outstanding support to the Sideshows Society in helping us to continue this village tradition. Recipe of the Month Smoked Haddock Florentine This is an easy, but delicious version of a fish pie which can be assembled the day before. Coating the fish in cornflour prevents the sauce from becoming too wet. You could serve it with rice, mashed potato or garlic and herb bread. Serves 5-6 Ingredients 40g/1.5ozbutter 225g/0.5lb mushrooms, thickly sliced 350g/0.75lb fresh young spinach Salt and pepper Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg 600g/1.25lb undyed smoked haddock, skinned, cut into pieces (allowing two per serving) and coated in seasoned cornflour 3 hard boiled eggs, shelled and sliced 25g/1oz fresh breadcrumbs 40g/1.5oz freshly grated Parmesan Sauce 600mls/20fl oz milk 1 onion, peeled and halved 1 bay leaf Parsley stalks 50g/2oz butter 50g/2oz plain flour 50g/2oz mature cheddar, grated 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Method - 220C/G7/425F/200C fan 1. Put the milk into a saucepan and add the onion, bay leaf and parsley stalks. Bring to just under boiling point and leave for 30 minutes to infuse. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Melt 2oz of butter in a pan and remove from the heat before stirring in the flour. Gradually add the strained hot milk and return to the heat and slowly bring to the boil, stirring all the time until thickened. Cover with a lid to prevent a skin forming. 3. Melt 1.5oz butter in a large pan, add the mushrooms and fry briskly for a minute or two, then add the spinach and cook until it has just wilted. Season well with salt, pepper and nutmeg. 4. Mix 3 tablespoons of the sauce with the mushroom mixture and spread on the base of a shallow, buttered ovenproof dish. Then cover with the hard boiled eggs. 5. Sit the fish on top of the eggs. 6. Add the grated cheddar and mustard to the remaining sauce and pour over the raw fish. Sprinkle the top with breadcrumbs. 7. Bake for about 30 minutes until the haddock is cooked and the topping is golden. Helen V 27

Wisborough Green History - FROM The introduction of the Poor Law Amendment Act described last month obliged all of the unions in the country to enact the regulations introduced by the Poor Law Commissioners that defined just about every aspect of the running of a poor law union and its workhouses. The regulations started with the inmates' daily routine. They were required to rise at 6am, take breakfast from 6.30 to 7am whereupon they worked until noon. Dinner was for an hour, they then worked until 6pm when they had an hour for supper. There followed an unspecified hour in which they were allowed some recreation, perhaps with some donated books, magazines, etc. Workhouses also started to host occasional talks and musical entertainment, often performed by visiting groups. Bedtime followed at 8pm. In winter, the inmates rose and started work an hour later. Half an hour after the workhouse bell was rung for rising, the Master or Matron performed a roll-call. The bell also announced meal breaks during which the rules required that "silence, order and decorum shall be maintained". Communal prayers were read before breakfast and after supper every day and Divine Service performed every Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day when no work, except necessary housework and cooking, was done by the inmates. The inmates' diet was defined by the Poor Law Commissioners who issued six sample dietary tables from which the workhouses could decide which was most suitable when considering local food availability. The main constituent of inmates' diet was bread. At breakfast it was supplemented by gruel or porridge both made from water and oatmeal. Tea (often without milk) was often provided for the aged and infirm at breakfast, together with a small amount of butter. Supper was usually similar to breakfast. The midday dinner was often bread and cheese, but was also the meal that varied most and included: Soup: this was usually broth with a few vegetables added and thickened with barley, rice or oatmeal. Meat and potatoes: the meat was usually boiled and was usually cheap cuts of beef or mutton, with occasional pork or bacon. The potatoes would usually be grown in the workhouse plot (now the village allotments). Pudding: this would be either rice-pudding or steamed suet pudding that was served plain though later served with gravy, or sultanas added to make plum pudding particularly when served to children or the infirm. Children and the aged had a slightly different diet, usually with more meat-based meals and with inclusion of milk or tea. Special or medical cases might require extra or alternative food. Most workhouses had at least a small infirmary area for the care of sick inmates, but nursing care in the workhouse was invariably in the hands of female inmates who were often illiterate; this could be a serious problem when dealing with labels on medicine bottles. However, the provision of free medical care and the free education for children was a real benefit as neither was available to the poor who lived outside workhouses until the early 20th century. There was a list of rules under which workhouses operated. These were often printed (Continued on page 31)

and prominently displayed in the workhouse, and also read out aloud each week so that the illiterate could have no excuse for disobeying them. For example, disorderly conduct could be punished by a withdrawal of food 'luxuries' such as cheese or tea while stubborn resistance to authority could result in a period of solitary confinement. Inmates were given a variety of work to perform, much of which was involved in running the workhouse. The women mostly did domestic jobs such as cleaning or helping in the kitchen or laundry. Some workhouses had workshops for sewing, spinning and weaving or other local trades. Others had their own vegetable gardens where the inmates worked to provide food for the workhouse. Men's work was sometimes performed outside the workhouse, e.g. agricultural labour and the breaking of stones for road construction. Wisborough Green's workhouse housed children aged up to 16 who were sometimes orphans and sometimes illegitimate offspring. Of course, no work was expected of them, but there was still housework. Not all pauper children in the union area were inmates of Wisborough as some were able to remain with their parents in the Petworth workhouse. In addition to the master and matron in residence in Wisborough, there were adult cooks and cleaners (the latter frequently imbecilic) to look after the children. In the 1851 census, 67 children were accommodated although by 1871, the number had dropped to 30. Education was provided and although the workhouse employed its own teachers they were often a problem. They were poorly paid without any formal training and faced large classes of unruly children with little interest in their lessons. Few stayed in the job for more than a few months. In an effort to force workhouses to offer at least a basic level of education, legis lation was passed in 1845 requiring all pauper children to be able to read and sign their own papers when they became apprentices. The photo shows the workhouse in 1912 towards the end of its use as a workhouse; the second floor windows and the front entrance are quite prominent. Its appearance would have been just the same in 1834, the date when the new Poor Law came into force. Continued next month. Richard B. 31

Driving to the South o There are, of course, many different routes you can take to reach the south of France, by car, but for adventure, excitement, unmatched scenery and sheer enjoyment, it would be hard to beat taking the Route des Grande Alpes.
Route des Grandes Alpes It was at the beginning of the last century that the French began work on a motor route that would run much of the length of the Alps, from Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) in the north, to the Mediterranean, in the south. In 1909 The Touring Club of France began work on the project, which would eventually take almost 30 years. In the early days most of the route was just dirt, mud, sand and gravel, with many stretches barely adequate for the new mode of transport – the automobile. The easier sections were completed first, and while an inaugural run was made along much of the route in 1913 – it took five days – work came to a four-year stop during the 1914/18 World War. After the war, work continued, and by 1937 the section across Europe’s highest pass – the Col de l'Iseran – was finished, and to all intents and purposes the original concept of a road along the full length of the Alps was completed. Such is the way of man, that the route, or parts of it, was soon being used for everything from the Monte Carlo Rally for cars, to the Tour de France for bicycles, and every imaginable sport or leisure pastime in between. Of course, many of the higher passes are often closed for up to six months of the year because of snow, but during the other six months anyone lucky enough to traverse even part of the route will experience some of the world’s most dramatic, magnificent and glorious mountain scenery. In 2010 we ran a Jolly Good Tour along most of the route. Not all of it, as, without hurrying, this would have taken longer than a week. Ours was a more leisurely 34
of France – via the Alps trip, lasting five days, but we did our best to give the 15 cars entered a taste of the more scenic sections. We used the following four hotels, all of which were excellent, albeit not cheap, but France is not short of less-expensive places to stay, in each of the overnight areas. Hotel de la La Verniaz et ses Chalets, Evian-les-Bains. L’Abbaye de Talloires, Talloires. Villa Morelia, Jausiers. Fairmont hotel, Monte Carlo. And the route we took…
Day 1. Evian to Talloires. Evian, Thonon, Bellevaux, St Jeoire, Marnaz, Col de Colombiere, Le Grand-Bornand, St Jean-de-Sixt, Col de la Croix-Fry, Thones, Cemetery des Glieres, Col de Bluffy, Talloires.
Day 2. Talloires to Jausiers. Talloires, Albertville, Col de la La Madeline, Chambre, Col du Telegraph, Valloire, Col du Galibier, Col du Lautaret, Briancon, Mont Dauphin, Col de Vars, Jausiers.
Day 3. Jausiers and back to Jausiers. Jausiers, Barcelonnette, Gorges du Bachelard, Col du Cayolle, St Martin-d’Entraunes, Col des Champs, Colmars, Col d’Allos, Barcelonnette, Jausiers.

And the maps? Well, the normal Michelin Road Atlas will give you an outline, at a scale of 1:200,000, but for real enjoyment, use Michelin maps numbers 328, 333, 334 & 341, in the Michelin ‘LOCAL France’ series, at 1: 150,000. Do try this dramatic drive sometime, perhaps in June or September/early October. In July – Tour de France time – and August even the higher passes can get busy, and in other months snow can be a problem. One slight caveat; although the roads are generally superb and well maintained, there are some mountain stretches without guard rails, so take care and you’ll have the drive of your life. There's just one bit of news to pass on, our singles competition the 'Reg Carter Trophy' came to its conclusion in mid December. Firstly in the semi finals, David Luxford was victorious over Marilyn Knight and Bernard Adsett beating Joan Goodchild to give an all male final. The Final was a close and well contested affair with David taking an early lead. Bernard then pulling it back to leave the scores level going into the final end, with David eventually prevailing to retain the trophy. The program of friendly matches are now in full swing. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday, 1st February 2016 - 8pm Village Hall Talk by Ray Broughton with “Tips & New Ideas” Ray still teaches occasionally at Sparsholt College, after being the Head of Horticulture there. The college will be familiar to listeners to Gardeners' Question Time. Those who came to Ray’s talk to us on Soil Management and Micro flora will undoubtedly be back. Here are some helpful lore from then: Break up subsoil to improve drainage. Loosen it and add half composted material. The worms will do the rest. Water will penetrate more easily as will plant roots. Clean out water butts to keep the water free from fungal spores, which dampen off seedlings. The Hot Cook Compost method needs neither worms nor turning. Weeds are totally broken down and it is fast – three months to cook. The best manure is from over wintering bullock pens. The straw will be almost semi composted by spring. Always check with the grower if fields where the animals have grazed have had selective weed killers on them. Test your new manure for the wrong sort of chemicals in it by sowing a seed tray with cress. In two weeks you will see how it grows and be able to judge. Test the quality of your water butt water the same way. Don’t let your dog chew cocoa shell mulches. Compost pine needles for 4 months until they are not sticky and you can run your hand through them. Slugs hate this mulch. Weeds don’t have much of a chance either. Find a pal with a pine tree. Try the big barley bale method of growing tomatoes. Maybe this former Head of Horticulture at Sparsholt will reveal: how to get rid of moles for years? Or even how to get rid of moss? Now for some sad news. June Clark passed away unexpectedly on 12 January. Her organisational abilities were invaluable to WGHS for very many years. She was meticulous and far thinking. June was a tremendous gardener as we all have seen even just by driving past on the A272. That impressive sweep of the front garden always reminded me of the colourful perfection of the old Sutton's Seed Catalogue covers from years ago. June always had something to put into the Competitions at the Meetings and give us pleasure. What a treasure. The Table Top competition starts again. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the AGM. The great fish and fresh dressed crab and the onion seller's wares were particularly mentioned. Someone called over the pedestrian crossing on the A272 to tell me how delicious the French onions were. Really special. Hopefully they will be on sale next December. Now we hope all our stallholders are in fine fettle for 2016 and that everyone coming to the Market will have a really pleasant New Year and find just what they are looking for. WI Report On the 7th January 2016 we were treated to a talk by The Reverend Clive Jenkins, Vicar of Wisborough Green about his experiences as a Chaplain to the emergency services. He has been a chaplain for many years to the Fire Service, Medical Service and the Police for which he has had to undergo training similar to the members of these services. He showed us some slides and the various uniforms that he has to wear when attending various scenes. He told us his role is mainly with the actual workforce of the services, not the casualties. He was also a Special Constable for 12 years. All very enlightening. Our next meeting on the 4th February will be a talk and hands on meeting with Ruth Izaacs. Her expertise in needle work is legendary and not to be missed. It is with deep sadness that we have to report the death of one of our founder members, June Clark. She sadly passed away on Tuesday 12th January at St. Richards Hospital. We shall certainly miss her greatly and our thoughts are with Eric and family. RIP June. Weather Watch Not sure it was a good idea to name these Atlantic storms for it seems they are worse than usual! Parts of the UK have had a truly dreadful time – in the South we have been luckier. Wisborough Green Rainfall for December was 99mm (59mm last year –my 8 yr average is 123mm). Honister Pass in Cumbria set a new record for 24hr rainfall in the UK with a total of 341mm on 5/6 December. At time of writing (14 th January) we have already had more rain than last month, No surprise it was the warmest December on record – a massive 5°C above the 19812010 average. No wonder the daffodils are in bloom! Surely we must get some colder weather to slow what could be a very early spring. A very grey December – sunshine levels were only 60 % of the norm. Weathervane
CYBER TIPS iTip of the Month
I have finally made it into the 21st Century. And I am quite proud of it too! As one of Wisborough Green’s newest Octogenarians I am now the owner of a splendid iPad. My generous and lovely family presented me with the tablet on my Birthday a month or so ago, together with a bottle of an amazing special limited edition Malt Whisky ( there is still some left!). My first concern about the iPad, as you might imagine, was security. I had heard that Apple devices do not attract viruses and the like: this is not strictly true, so care has to be taken to keep your personal data personal. I had no idea, for example, that those who do such things can track the owner or user of an iPhone or iPad if certain boxes are not ticked or unticked which ever the case may be. After a little searching, I found a very helpful website under the umbrella of BT. Simply Google “How to make your iPad and iPhone more secure”. It’s all there, is simple to follow and, as the entry suggests, it is wise to take these precautions on all Apple devices.
