Pastoral Letter “Carry one another’s burdens and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.” St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians Chapter 6, verse 2 You may have some items in the attic that have been passed down through your family that in themselves may not be unique or priceless, but are special in some way. Photos, jewellery, a family Bible, medals or perhaps letters, something that tells a story of your family at a particular moment in the past. One item we have, is a quilted, patchwork blanket, made from a variety of coloured materials, probably from ladies dresses. It is very neatly stitched together to form a collage of colours. On one corner is a label that states, “From the Canadian Red Cross”. The story as I understand it is that the blanket was sent over from Canada during the Blitz (from September 1940) to aid those who were bombed out of their homes, to show solidarity and support in a practical way to many folk in the UK who were facing real hardship. On Sunday 2nd August we will gather for the annual ‘Dieppe Memorial Service’ where we recognise the sacrifice of those who came to our assistance and aid during World War Two from Canada. They came to share our burden and that of much of Western Europe that had fallen under the oppression of Nazi Germany. It is important to recognise when people have gathered to support one another in times of war or crisis, not just in the past, but equally today. Violent and intolerant groups seek to oppress and dictate to others a perverted world view that uses bombs and bullets to promote an evil agenda. We need always to be thankful for the assistance we receive from others in times of need and to be mindful of our responsibility to help those, who, for whatever reason, need their burdens lightened today. Clive and Marion

fourth Sundays of each month, two members of the team are available at the back of church to pray with you during the administration of the Eucharist. You do not need to say anything or be specific about what is troubling you if you don’t wish to. This can be a very special and peaceful time and a great comfort.

A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

From the Editor Welcome to the August edition of Ad Vincula. This month sees Trudy Emberson’s last school report written as she prepares to leave at the end of the Summer term (p12). We wish her well for the future. In addition to the usual articles, we have a report on the Teddy Bears weekend at Xpresso and in Church (p17), Wendy Duff’s report of the Horticultural Society’s visit to Hinton Ampner, including two of her wonderful sketches (p19), an important message from the Parish Council about the twisting of swings in the playground (p21) and a report of the results of the Hort Soc’s June Show (p39). Although August is a fairly quiet month as far as events go, for Wisborough Green there are two important events - one at the beginning and one at the end. The one at the beginning is the annual Dieppe Memorial Service on Sunday 2 August (p6) in the Church where, in conjunction with members of the Canadian Veterans Association, we will remember those that gave their lives in the disastrous raid in August 1942. The second, a much happier affair, is the annual Traditional Fete and Horticultural Show on the Green on Bank Holiday Monday, 31 August (p22-23). I hope to see you at both events. Finally, at the time of writing, Jamie Daniell only has about 60 miles to go to reach his goal of John O’Groats and, by the time you read this, should be safely back home in Wisborough Green having walked about 1100 miles starting in Lands End back in April. I am in awe of his achievement. Best wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

Nature Notes On the drive back from Oxford a few days ago, I counted 21 red kites. The cloud layer was thick and quite low, and one or two birds floated across not very far above me, affording perfect views of their gorgeous russet undercarriages! And now we have at least one of these athletic flyers making regular appearances over Wisborough Green. It’s been seen above Carters Way and Hughes Hill, and at least twice directly over our garden. Wonderful sight. This great picture of a little owl was taken up behind the allotments at Harsfold. Apparently it was just sitting on their fence. There’ve been little owls in the old farmyard for years it seems, but this was a first in the garden – what a lovely view. Little owls are such engaging birds. They often hunt in the daytime when they’re feeding young, and seem to tolerate humans fairly well. They usually nest at a lower level than other owls, needing strategically placed branches for the young birds to clamber onto. Their early flying skills leave a bit to be desired! Another picture, also very gratefully received, comes from a house up on the Bedham Road. When the sun’s been shining a patch of lavender has been attracting clouds of small tortoiseshell butterflies - also lots of bumblebees up there too. There are encouraging numbers of many different butterflies this year, which is very cheering. A gardener with his ride-on tractor over in Plaistow got a bit of a surprise recently as he was trundling across the grass. An unsuspecting rabbit was grabbed by a divebombing buzzard, right in front of him. He jammed on the brake, expecting the bird to throw itself back up into the air and escape. But it calmly picked up its meal and flew off with it - totally unconcerned about the tractor or its driver. Also in Plaistow the other day, five swallows were seen chasing off a sparrowhawk, with a lot of noise and kerfuffle. Another exciting moment. By the way, our buzzards here are very vocal now, and we are pretty sure there is at least one youngster airborne, which is a nice result. So that’s Crows 0 – Buzzards 1 (so far) Lastly a picture for you to envisage, as sadly I didn’t have my phone with me to capture it. There’s an old oak tree near the road just before Kirdford village. It has some leaves low down, but the whole of the top is a rather lovely shaped ‘bowl’ of completely bare branches. One evening this week all of these branches were covered in starlings. It was almost like an oddly, and darkly, decorated Christmas tree. There were dozens of them, like shiny black baubles, literally one per twig. And the whole thing was bathed in evening sunlight. I went back the next night hoping for a picture. There was one starling sitting rather forlornly, right at the top. Can you spot it? PS Deer has eaten the roses again…….sigh. Sue J 11

Wisborough Green Primary School News We have had such a busy term and, with only a few days to go as I write my final letter to the village for this academic year, and my time as headteacher, it’s time to reflect on all that we have achieved in the past five years… Wisborough Green Primary School is now a one-form entry primary school, with seven classes. The numbers have risen from around 130 to 180 since I became headteacher in September 2010. We now have a beautiful building which we are all proud to take care of. This has been one of the main areas of focus for me and it has taken a huge amount of time and determination to achieve the best result possible for the children. The school has been transformed; with new heating, boiler, windows, roof and a classroom. Along with a lick of paint, new furniture (mostly free!) and new green carpets everywhere, we have the basis for a fantastic learning environment. Even the outside area has been changed for the better, with our newly extended pond area and playground, with its fabulously colourful markings, of course. The children in School Council have played an enormous role in transforming the school for the better as the decisions we have made have been agreed with them along the way. Of course it was the appointment of a Premises Manager that changed my life after the first year! I must thank Mr Goodchild who has supported me so brilliantly, as we have worked on making the building work better for the children. He will be leaving the school this term and will be sadly missed by all; the children, staff and parents adore him! We have overhauled teaching and learning, mainly by introducing new and exciting learning journeys. Homework is now completed by the vast majority of the children and they really enjoy their tasks! Our children’s work is always praised by other schools; we offer such an engaging curriculum. Sports Day is now enjoyed by all, with the teams (red, blue, green and yellow) competing against each other. This means brothers and sisters can work together and families can enjoy seeing the children taking part. The more competitive running races are watched by the whole school and celebrated by all. Parents, toddlers and the teachers of course have to have a go. I will be leaving Wisborough with my hat trick ‘Three-Legged Race’ winner title intact (thanks to Mrs Crook!). Many traditions have continued at the school, the Summer Fayre with the May Queen has been established for many, many years. Our legendary end of year production is always a key feature of the Summer Term. This year’s ‘The Jungle Book’ performances were absolutely brilliant. The children performed fantastically, as usual, with stunning costumes and make up. Year 3 performed their Samba to the audience as an opener to the show which was brilliant! Mr Harder has yet again excelled himself with this latest adaptation of the story. Miss Greenway was in charge of costumes, Miss Croucher choreographed the dancing and Mr Loizides designed the set. All in all it was a fantastic team effort which we all enjoyed immensely. I have always enjoyed the end of year productions at Wisborough Green because, as I said after the show, it just highlights how amazingly confident the children at Wisborough Green become as they progress through the school. These are just a few of the triumphs we have achieved over the past five years. I will (Continued on page 13)

miss working in this wonderful school with such talented children (and staff). I will always remember my time here fondly and will be keeping an eye on the website to see how everyone is getting on. With my very best wishes and thanks to everyone in Wisborough Green for their wonderful support. Trudy Emberson, Headteacher

Wey & Arun Canal Trust WALKS EXPLORE CANAL HISTORY HISTORIC locations on a 19th Century canal route will be explored during two guided walks over the 2015 Heritage Open Days weekend. They are being run by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust, which is inviting members of the public to find out about its restoration work on the northern section of the waterway. “These are opportunities for people to hear about what we are doing to bring the canal in Surrey back to life, as well as enjoy pleasant and interesting excursions in the countryside,” said Trust Chairman Sally Schupke. The first walk is on Saturday, September 12, meeting at 2.15pm in the car park of Shamley Green Church, Church Hill, Shamley Green, Surrey GU4 0UD. Led by the Trust’s technical liaison officer, Alan Johnson, it will follow a four-mile circular route to visit four sites containing relics of the canal and the Horsham to Guildford railway, including three iron-framed bridges. On Sunday, September 13, walkers will meet at 2pm at the Gunpowder Store, Stonebridge Wharf, on the River Wey at Shalford. With Trust publicity officer Rob Searle, they will explore parts of the canal route down to the former Bramley Wharf. This 1½ mile stroll, taking approximately two hours, will take in the Tannery Lane roving bridge and the sites of the Tannery Lane Lock and the unique Gosden Aqueduct. It is also an opportunity to explore the new Hunt Nature Park which is being created by Trust volunteers and it is hoped the Gunpowder Store – which held the products of Chilworth Gunpowder Mills before shipment by barge – will be open for the day. Parking is available at Broadford Business Park, Shalford GU4 8EP, behind the Parrot Inn on the A248. Most of the walk routes are not on metalled surfaces, so it will be essential to wear walking boots, stout shoes or trainers. The walks are free, but donations to the Trust will be welcome. Booking is essential, by e-mail to events@weyandarun.co.uk or by calling 01483 505566, by September 3 for the Saturday and September 11 for the Sunday. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is restoring a 23-mile canal between the Wey at Shalford and the River Arun at Pallingham in West Sussex. Find out more at: www.weyandarun.co.uk. 13

TEDDY BEARS COME OUT FOR THE WEEKEND So many Teddy Bears arrived at a special Xpresso Coffee Morning in the church on Friday 10th July. The occasion was to raise funds for FSW, the Chichester Diocese charity Family Support Work. The Climbing Bears came clutching Teddies large and small. Wizzy-Tots were there as well. They were greeted by The Revd Panda from the pulpit, resplendent in his multi-coloured stole, and his assistants Squash and Honey Southampton. After a teddy bear biscuit and a drink, the children sat happily at the front of the church to hear their teacher, Nina, read them all a story about (of course) even more Teddy Bears. Several ladies from Wyatt House came and supported the event and brought their Teddy Bears as well. On the Sunday, at the 8 o’clock service, The Revd Panda assisted Revd Andrew Pearson with his sermon! At the 10.30 service many more Teddies arrived. This time Revd Jack Mulder called the children and their Teddies to the front of the church, and introduced them one by one to the congregation. It was all such great fun! Donations were given for FSW at the Xpresso Coffee Morning. Peter & Hilary

Hort Soc Visit to Hinton Ampner on June 16th Let us draw a veil over the first hour of this visit! Suffice it to say it was a beautiful sunny day and we sat drinking coffee by the village green awaiting our transport. Eventually we arrived at Hinton Ampner and were confronted by a large block of scaffolding and plastic engulfing the house – the roof having blown off in the recent gales! Whatever next? However, armed with our maps we all set off on our individual tours of discovery – and what enchanting and exciting discovery!! The site, overlooking the South Downs, had been inhabited by the Dutton family for the last 400 years, and when, in 1960, the old Victorian house was devastated by fire, the last of the Duttons, Ralph, 8th Lord of Sherborne, rebuilt the house in the classical Georgian style (but with all 20th century creature comforts.) The parkland and gardens were designed so that from any window of the house your eyes rested on a vista, be it a long, narrow and elegant lily pond, an avenue of topiary culminating in statuary, or a flight of steps leading to a terraced garden, seamlessly blending, by judicious use of a ha-ha, with a wide sweeping view of the Downs. Inside the house, it was a joy to see the beautifully proportioned rooms bedecked with gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers yet with a lovely homely feeling. There were many tables inlaid with colourful stones including a large collection of Derbyshire Blue John pieces. I noticed in the library that the backs of the chairs echoed the shapes of some of the topiary yews and wondered which came first, chair back or clipped yew? Striding along the wide grass walks, the air was filled with the delicious scent of roses. One border was underplanted with aquilegia of every combination of colour and hue. I spent quite a bit of time sitting in the little gazebo, labelled on the map as the ”Temple”, enjoying the classic perspective of a walk bordered with roses, Philadelphia and other scented shrubs, (Continued on page 21)

leading to the lime avenue, the vanishing point culminating in an obelisk. Going past more topiary towards the sundial, it was now time to head for the courtyard and sustenance from the tea shop to regain strength for the walled garden, the orchard, and finally, just time for a quick visit to the church of “All Saints”, whose flint tower dominates the North side of the gardens. A small church but with breathtakingly colourful, modern stained glass windows at the East end. Two tall, narrow lancet windows depicting the time the Israelites spent in the wilderness, following the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, a wonderful vision of blues, purples and reds. Not horticultural but a fitting end to a gloriously colourful day. Wendy Duff

Village Playground – Twisted Chains In recent weeks, the older children’s swing chains have been twisted around until the swings cannot be used. It’s presumably great fun at the time but unfortunately it takes them out of action until someone untangles (often takes over an hour to do this) and could also damage the chains. If the chains are damaged, the Parish Council will have no other option but to close off the swings until new chains can be installed, which could be several weeks (not to mention the expense!). It would be such a shame to lose the swings just as the school summer holidays start, so could we please ask parents to highlight this issue to your children. Thank you. kend in Wisborough Green August Horticultural and Craft Show Marquee on the Green Monday 31st August 2015 2pm – 4.45pm Exhibitors set up by 10.15am The weather has been kind to crops so far, but ….? Will the gardeners of WG be brave again and put in what did well? Everyone enjoys seeing new competitors. Be brave, enter. Those who do, have a deep experience awaiting them. An experience of anxiety and tension and satisfaction; even a possibility of joy at the end. Above all there will be such stories to tell and laugh about later. Please put in as many entries as you can. It is a real commitment to being part of this community by taking part and joining in a traditional English village Show. The Show Schedule is at the Village Shop so you know precisely what you could put in. There is really helpful information at the back to maximise your entries' performance as well as plenty of tips and advice. All members have these Schedules, but if mislaid, then they can be bought at WG Stores from behind the counter. You do have to ask! Non members from anywhere can also enter lots of classes, just get a Schedule. So, if your friend out of the Village is a marvel at flower arranging, make a day of it and give WG entrants a bit of competition. Do browse through the Schedule and find something to enter. None of our gardens have exactly the same growing conditions, be it soil, shelter, aspect, shade or being under the right rain cloud at the right time. So you could be the one with the best..... … because you had the best conditions this year. Newcomers to showing in particular are welcome. Be brave, enter. The box for entry slips will be on the fence of the The Old Forge by the toilets at the side of the Green.

WISBOROUGH GREEN ART SHOW 2015 Our local Art Show will be held as usual on the Bank Holiday weekend - Sunday 30th and Monday 31st August from 11 am to 6 pm at the lovely Barn on the Green on the corner of Kirdford and Durbans Roads. We welcome all arts and crafts in any media to show and to sell so please bring them in. If you are not on our mailing list there will be entry forms available from the village shop in early August and from Sheila Armistead on 01403 700319. 23

A very special thank you to Gill Parish and Val Mourilyan for coordinating the amazing array of food and drink, to Keith and Jenny Carter for running the tombola, and to Richard Parish and Gillian Gough for their great work behind the bar. It was, as usual, a very enjoyable evening and raised £569.87 towards Minibus funds. Wisborough Green History - WW2 Some new information regarding aerial attacks has been give to me by Tony Overington who lives in Newpound. The details that he has described were provided as a result of the article in the June issue on incendiary bombs some of which were dropped on Carter Brothers factory in Newpound. Tony wrote: "In June 1974 my wife and I purchased 5 Daniels Cottages in Newpound that had been empty and semi-derelict for ten years. It had previously been the home of Earnest Farrell, the foreman carpenter for Carter Brothers in Reliance Works Newpound. Number 3 was lived in by Don Matthews who had also been employed by Carter Brothers and who was a millwright". "Before we could start work on restoration and new building work, Eric Clark sent in one of his men with a bulldozer to clear and level the ground and dig out a driveway. During this work two unexploded WW2 incendiary bombs were unearthed and dealt with by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit. Two days later, my son Stuart (then aged 12 years) and my daughter Sarah (aged 8 years) were exploring a very deep ditch that ran through the garden, when Stuart called out "Dad, Sarah has found another torpedo". To my horror, Sarah was holding the bomb close to her chest. I said to her "Put it down very gently" and with that she said "Oh, it's okay we have been playing catch with it!" She then threw it back across the ditch to Stuart which was frightening to say the least! It fell to the ground and this caused a small slit to open in the very badly corroded case, allowing the contents to start to leak out. The Bomb Disposal Unit was quickly on scene and dealt with it". "The officer in charge said that if the bomb had disintegrated as the children were playing with it, they would have been very badly burnt as it contained a phosphorous substance that when ignited burnt a brilliant white flame acting as a pathfinder for the following bombers. They then decided that they would carry out a full search of the gardens of numbers 4, 5 and 6 with their detectors. As a result, a further nine unexploded bombs, all in a dangerous condition, were found and removed". "Up until about two years ago, whilst reorganising the garden, I was still digging up the fins of bombs that had exploded. At that time I told Don Matthews at no. 3 about the bombs and he said that during the bombing raids the carpenters shop and timber stores were completely burnt out. (These were located where warehouses, etc stood behind OCSL and those between there and the OCSL car park at the north-west end RB.) The bombs narrowly missed Tanner Cottages, three very old brick and timber cottages that stood on what is now OCSL car park and which Don had helped demolish in 1947. These cottages had been the homes of the Truelove and Hampshire families employed at Carter Brothers, one of whom had a mentally retarded daughter and who was wrongly accused of setting fire to the workshops but, happily, the real cause of the fires was soon apparent." Tony added that the bombs had fallen in a line drawn from his house and into the field behind, the nearest one fell in his garden about 50' beyond his back door. They fell in bundles from the aircraft and separated as they fell coming down with a screaming sound. The bombs dropped on Newpound were very different from the ones dropped on 30

AERIAL ATTACKS 4 (A Postscript) Kirdford Road that were illustrated in the June issue. These consisted of a long tube and were by far the most common. The ones that dropped on Newpound were similar to the one illustrated. They were made of aluminium and were 2½" wide by Photo courtesy of Australian War Memorial 14" long of which the four fins occupied the last 2½" and they weighed about 4lb each. The main differences from the illustration were a more pointed tip and the body being gently curved for its entire length. Richard B.

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Summer Burglary Campaign A burglary in your own home is a devastating experience that can affect you and your family long after the incident has occurred. The good news is that the risk of becoming a victim of burglary in Sussex is low. However, during the summer that risk can increase because doors and windows left open make it easier for burglars to gain access. Stay secure at home this summer. Check our essential home security tips here and join us in tackling burglary in Sussex.

Keep your home secure this summer  If you leave your house empty - even when you are in the back garden - lock all the doors and windows and make sure fanlight windows are closed. Be especially careful about those on the ground floor and above flat roof areas.  When you leave a room unattended, close the windows and doors - especially on the ground floor.  Keep all wallets, purses, credit cards and car keys out of sight.  If you want to leave your windows open while you are asleep, have window restrictors fitted to stop people climbing in.  Double check fences and boundaries to make sure they keep burglars out.  Secure garden tools and ladders in a locked shed or garage to prevent them being used to break in to your or a neighbour's home.  Consider laying gravel on your footpaths or driveway, which can deter burglars from approaching your property.  Fit outside security lighting and a visible burglar alarm to help deter burglars.  Burglars know the price of everything but the value of nothing. The best defence against burglary is prevention.  In an emergency, or if you see a crime in progress, always call 999 Stay secure

Beware of “One-day Sales” Trading Standards are warning residents about the potential perils of attending one day sales which appear to be offering big brand items at bargain prices. These sales, often described as bankrupt or liquidation stock sales, are typically advertised via flyers delivered through letterboxes. A recent sale in a pub in Crawley led to victims handing over cash for what they were told were iPad’s and other big brand items but in reality the goods they received were very low value and nothing like what they had been led to believe. The key thing to remember always is that if an offer sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. If there is any doubt whatsoever, residents are strongly advised to never part with their money without first examining the goods they are purchasing in order to satisfy themselves that they are correctly described, safe and genuine. To report an incident or concern direct to West Sussex Trading Standards go to www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport. Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Bridge Club The club usually meets on a Tuesday evening, at a Member’s house, 7.30 pm-9.30pm. We are a small friendly group, and welcome bridge players of all standards, on a social basis. Phone Kay Wooldridge on 01403 700464 for more details.

Wisborough Green Spitfire Simulator Club Why not join the Spitfire Simulator Club? The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. However, with the Simulator Club, members make a small donation to the RAFBF ( ÂŁ5 per year ) and their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight for free. To join the group, contact Brian Smith on 01403 700346 or briansmithair@uwclub.net

Wisborough Green History Society Wisborough Green Village History Society is a small group of people who enjoy talking about and researching the history of the village. Several of our members are life-long residents of the village, others have lived here for many years and all have interesting memories and anecdotes to relate. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month in the village hall committee room at 10.30 am. Sue Killingbeck, Secretary

Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club It's usually quiet through the summer on the short mat bowls front as most clubs shut down in favour of the outdoor game. At WGSMBC we carry on the whole year round as we have no outdoor facilities and of course we love the game. Unfortunately I have had to sit out recently as I have cracked a bone in my elbow, so I have had to leave it to my 'minions' to carry the flag, although they seem to be doing better without me. In our only recent match, against Alfold, we had comfortable victories on both mats. On mat 1 Jane Adsett, Evelyn Ringrose, David Luxford and Bernard Adsett winning 26 - 8 and on mat 2 Dawn Smith/Sue Taber, Joan Goodchild, Marilyn Knight and Shirley Bundy winning 26 - 20. All our matches are played on a friendly basis, they are played in the best spirit and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We meet in the Village Hall on a Monday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30pm and Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30pm. New members of all ages always welcome. See Village Directory at back of magazine for contact details. Monica Enticknap, Captain 35

Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 13th August 2015 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm

Market News It's the same time and the same place, in or out depending on the weather as usual. In July our herbs and spices stall (Poppy the van) popped up at Parham Garden Fair, which happens once a year. We happen eleven months a year A group of excited WG school children joined us at the Market with their creations made from recycled materials. It was part of a school project to develop creative thinking, design and selling. They were surprised and happy about the success of their eco projects, thanks to the Market customers. Just found out that the Pain d'Alsace bread that James sells at our Market won a silver medal at the World Bread Awards last year. James supplies the Hungry Guest Bakery in Petworth with milled grain that his business grows locally. The Petworth Loaf that you can buy from James uses flour from The Weald and Downland' s own Lurgashall Mill, which you can visit when at the Museum. Our artistic blacksmith Robin Maher solved my problem with Rosa Centifolia that had overflowed its obelisk and blocked a path. Too gorgeous to cut back. After speaking to Robin, he viewed the site and came up with an elegant solution that works a treat and did not cost a fortune. He may well solve some problem for you too. If you like going to the cinema in Billingshurst then you can buy tickets for that at the Macmillan stall. A very handy service to be sure of getting a seat. A big thank to two new Refreshments servers - Sandra Matthews and Diane Roberts. It really is so pleasant to have coffee and cake at the Market and to supplement Macmillan care funds. More helpers are very welcome to join the rest of the team of occasional helpers. Occasional help with setting up the tables and then dismantling them would be great. Please contact us or Philip Midwinter. The Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market Committee

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society June Show (Sunday 21 June 2015)

A Winning Entry by Ruby Jerges

Another super show thanks to every person who exhibited. Three of our “big hitters” were not able to participate this year but there were the same number of entries from many more different people. Our prize money has increased but so also our financial loss on that Show. There were more visitors and more teas and cakes were sold. It is becoming a greater attraction even with all the other pleasant events that day.

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Keep everything well watered especially during prolonged dry spells and don’t forget to feed plants with a general purpose liquid fertiliser.  Continue to dead-head annuals and perennials to avoid selfseeding and to encourage prolonged flowering.  Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage.  Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming.  Collect ripened seed and store for next year.  Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease.  Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the first frosts. Dry or freeze your herbs to use in the kitchen later on.  Pinch out the tips of your runner bean plants once they reach the top of their support. This encourages side-shooting and more beans at a manageable height for harvesting.  Continue to harvest second early potatoes now and start harvesting your maincrops as the leaves yellow and die back.  Keep an eye out for blight on tomatoes and potatoes. Treat with Bordeaux mixture at the first sight or when warnings are issued (for alerts register at www.blightwatch.co.uk)  Harvest french and runner beans little and often to ensure a continued supply and prevent them from setting seed.  Check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves and squash any that you find.  Harvest your fruit trees: cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines and apricots should all be ripe now! Early varieties of apple trees will be ready towards the end of the month.  Excesses of autumn raspberries, blackberries or loganberries, can be frozen on trays for a couple of hours and then bagged up for over winter use.

 Prune the fruited stems of your blackcurrant bushes after harvesting. 40

WI Report Owing to a health problem with our ‘Sword Swallower’ we were treated instead to a fascinating talk by Lisa Tupper from Bignor Roman Villa. I don’t think any member who heard her didn’t make a mental note to visit our nearest Roman Villa. When she married Will Tupper he asked her if she could just organise the place for about three months!! Several years later she is still running it but it will be a well-earned break when she goes on maternity leave soon. If you have the opportunities, go there and sample the delights of the mosaics and the special cream teas. On Sunday 2nd August we are again catering for the Canadian Veterans after the Dieppe Service. If you are able to come & help that would be super or if you can provide some of the food that would also be a help. Please contact Mary on the number below. We will be going to the Fox Runs Free, Charlton, on the 6th August for a meal. This is where the first WI in England met and it seem appropriate that we go there as the WI is celebrating its centenary this year and we may meet a member or two who were there!!! See you there. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for June was 46mm (last year 71mm – 7yr average is 57mm). Wettest place in the UK, with 95mm for June, was Cardinham (Cornwall) - the driest was Goudhurst (Kent) a lowly 6mm. At time of writing (July 14th) it is looking to be rather a dry July with only 1mm registered so far. Highest temp for the UK in June was 26.5°C at Writtle (Essex) and the lowest was a chilly 1.0°C at Bala (Gwynedd). A sunnier June than usual with sunshine levels 117% of the norm. Weathervane

CYBER TIPS It’s FREE – it really is! The other day I was looking at what needs to be done to renew the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Google took me to a website called EHIC Card Direct. I read through the instructions and came to this: “The best way to apply is online from NHS Business Services. Our site is independent of the NHS Business Services and it is available 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year, at a cost of £24.50 per application…..” Confused? I was, and I read on. In the “small print” I found that EHIC Card Direct is not in any way part of, nor connected to, any government body including the National Health Service. I began to look elsewhere! There are various ways to renew the card; the quickest and safest is online at www.nhs.uk/ehic or by calling the EHIC Application Line on 0300 330 1350. And It’s Free – it really is! One more scam to avoid! Important Postscript: The EHIC does not replace travel insurance, and you should make yourself familiar with the terms and conditions applicable to the card on the same website. Peter Edmonds
