irstly, I must thank everyone who has congratulated me on my first edition. There were moments when I thought it was never going to happen, but it did. This one has been a little easier as I’ve only had three nervous breakdowns in the process but that is thanks to my little network of special people whose support has proven to be unlimited and unconditional. As you will see I have been overwhelmed with items for inclusion to the point where I have had to add 4 extra pages. Phew! Which only goes to prove how popular this little magazine is, and I shall endeavour to keep it so! Come on then, I’m dying to know ... did anyone find the cryptic crossword more cryptically challenging than usual in the September issue due to the misplacement of the numbers? Or did you just not like to say anything? Anyway, I have tried to get it right this time but if I don’t, then next time I shan’t bother at all and you’ll just have to work it out for yourselves! So there!!

Obviously Hallowe’en had to feature in this issue so not much room for too many useless bits of information but I have tried to make it a bit different and next month, well, watch those spaces! Thank you again to my contributors for their news, gossip, pics, articles and info, do keep them coming in and to my advertisees, (I know, it’s not a proper word!). Finally and very importantly, the old talisman-bitmailer email address is now defunct. Nothing will get through! That’s it then. I’ve done it. November here I come. Tracey

♣Although Fancystitch Embroi-

dery Services (previously within the dive shop, La Gaviota Complex) are returning to England they will still be operating on a mail order basis. You can contact them via their website at www.fancystitch.co.uk Well, Gee Bee’s Carol has been busy again! The Stars in the Bars karaoke challenge is already underway and the joint winners have just been announced from Heat 1, local lady 12 year old Shannon Kay and Dave Littler from Sorbas. As the scores on the night were dead level it was decided that both would go through to the Grand Final representing Millionaire Sports Bar & Café, Pueblo Laguna. Heat 2 held at Cowboy Cocina was won by diva, Jacqui Edwards who then calmly resumed her waitressing duties. Apparently Kenny himself did a turn when he wasn’t hard at it in the kitchen. If you would like to take part contact Carol on 618 560 070 or email ronfazey1@msn.com or, you can apply at any of the auditions. An entry fee of 5 euros is charged which goes directly to MACS as does all other monies raised from the raffles, quizzes and promotions. (See below left for list of participating venues and dates) Incidentally, the Grand Final winning prize money is 400 euros and Carol says transport can be provided but preferably less than 20kms, please. Running in conjunction with the above, Gee Bee’s ‘busy bee’ has also got a “Turre’s Got Talent” competition underway, which is being hosted by The Piano Bar. The first heat was Thursday 15th October but there is still time to enter. Auditions are every Thursday

and the Grand Final will be on Saturday 5th December. This competition is open to any talent, not just singing. For more information you can either contact Sharon at the Piano Bar on 610 005 373, Gee Bee’s Karaoke on 618 560 070, email ronfazey1@msn.com or apply at any of the auditions. This is also in aid of MACS and the minimum age for entrants is 16. Bar Alvaron are now hosting a quiz night on a Monday run by the Merry Maidens, Ann, Joyce & Carol. The first week was very well attended however, the second exceeded all expectations with a record 76 people taking part. As well as the actual quiz itself there is also a raffle and ‘open the box’. Each player pays 2.50 euros out of which a percentage is donated to MACS. Registration is at 8pm for an 8.30 start. Food is also available during the break for 1 euro. PLEASE NOTE: despite the rumour, Eatz Diner is not closing down, they are very much here to stay. They also have new winter hours which you will find on page 11. It has been reported that the Hotel Indalo will be closing for the winter this year. (Hardly an attempt to boost tourism to the area is it?) As winter approaches, albeit rather slowly, there are a number of pallets at the back of Mr UK. Alan says feel free to take what you want, for whatever you want, however if you do intend to use them for firewood he recommends you steer clear of the blue ones as apparently they have a tendency to be a bit smelly. There is a group of people who go on a pilgrimage from Portugal to

Mazarrón for the winter. (So ...?) Well, one of their mapped stops is Zak’s fish & chip shop in Garrucha and they always make a detour on their way through. Zak wonders if this is one of his furthest regulars. Whilst with Zak, I am happy to announce on his behalf the return of his English Maris Piper potatoes to have with your fish, pie or his new kebab meat special. In aid of MACS, Kimrick are having a hog roast on Saturday 17th October. Doors open at 7.30pm, tickets are 9 euros including entertainment with Robin. To book call 950 475 198. There is an amendment to The Indalo Players forthcoming play, ‘Dying To Meet You’. Last month’s edition stated that the Sunday performance of 25th October was at 8pm. Actually it’s 4pm! (Nothing to do with me, it was Val Carrington’s fault! I just mess up the crosswords!!) The Syedpur evening at The Loft was so well attended that they will be back on 1st November. Bookings again are essential so either call in to see Richard or Jodie or phone 950 475 155 or 690 756 196. The Dames in Turre are organising a 3 day trip to a 4 star Spa Hotel in Almuñecar on 4th, 5th & 6th November. The trip includes Half Board in the hotel and excursions to Nerja and Frigiliana. The price is 125 euros per person and friends are welcome. To book your place phone Sylvia on 950 472 967 or Lesley on 950 478 633. PAWS are holding an Amateur Art and Craft Exhibition on Sunday November 15th, 1pm ‘til 5pm at Miraflores, Camping Los Gallardos. Art entries are to be taken between 10am and 11.30am on the day. Other attractions will include raffle, art demo, stalls, clothes rail, bric-abrac, home made cakes and pastries, etc. Go along and enjoy a day out indoors and further enjoy a meal at the Miraflores restaurant. The Dames in Turre are also organising an Ikea & Primark shopping trip on 17th November. The cost of this is 14 euros. To book a place call Lesley on 950 478 633. Back also are their famous Chicken & Tarragon and Steak & Guinness pies. Wednesday is ‘The Price is Right’ discount lunch day and Friday night is now Curry Night. They are also holding fortnightly Rastros. Anyone wanting a stall should email or telephone to put their names down. Bookings are being taken for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. They are offering a buffet style lunch at just 25 euros per person with a champagne reception. Doors will open at 12 noon. ♣On Saturday 31st October don't

be surprised to see a long line of people, bearing candles, making their way to local cemeteries. This is All Hallow's Eve, when the Spanish honour their deceased relatives with a night time vigil. Since the next day, All Souls (All Hallows) Day, is a national holiday, but falls on a Sunday this year, on Monday 2nd Banks and institutions will be closed. This includes major supermarkets like Mercadona - so stock up for a long weekend on your Friday shopping trip! And finally, the races are on! Villaricos Wacky Races returns for a 3rd time to the streets of the village on Saturday 7th November and Harmony Gym’s 6th Annual Mojácar Fun Run is on Sunday 8th November. Full details of both of these events is on page 13. Finally, finally, last minute news from Alvaron ... John is planning a dedicated football quiz sometime within this next month. You’ll have to check the boards for the exact day but he said it will be when there is a good Saturday afternoon’s football game on. It is not going to be an easy quiz but there will be prizes of the drinkable variety, the winning one being a gallon of beer. And there are also going to be forfeits, so you’d better get swotting!

Santiago Cortes from Caseria de Montijo, married and father of four had been out of work for many months and trying to survive on 420euros a month(his state benefit). His mortgage payments alone were 540euros a month. His bank had moved to repossess and auction his home. Santiago decided to go on a hunger strike. This tactic eventually worked when the back postponed the repossession and auction and renegotiated the loan to a 40 year mortgage. Santiago received more than 15,000 euros in public donation during this time which enabled him to repay all his arrears and donate some money to charity.

The east of Spain has been getting some mild earthquakes lately. Off the coast of Valencia one earthquake measured 3.2 on the Richter scale. This is classed as a level 4 quake meaning it might be felt inside your home but is no real threat to buildings.

• Adventure holidays in Costa Blanca • Back in 2005 an un-named British couple were kidnapped the day they arrived on holiday in torrevieja. The couple were held blindfolded in an apartment while the kidnappers demanded contact phone numbers of their family members, in order to place ransom demands. The whole procedure was delayed while the perps argued over the ransom details and the couple finally escaped whislt being moved to a new hideout. The Spanish supreme court gave the six kidnappers 89 years to sit and think it over.

• Back-handers are not what they used to be • Municipal land in Estepona was sold off by town hall officials at prices well below market value. The town hall cronies then re-classified the land so that building could start. It is estimated that over 49 million euros have gone astray. The judge in charge of the case has released details of the investigation showing dozens of examples of corrupt goings-on. In one case it is alleged that a real estate developer had paid a bribe to a councillor in the region of 1.2 million euros. Nice work if you can get it. Syedpur of Albox, catering for The Loft on Mojácar Playa, was enjoyed so much that some of the many people who were there then ordered takeaways

• Not wet weather, not wetter weather, the wettest weather ever • Alicante has suffered a record amount of rain in September. A staggering 290 litres per square metre falling in just 11 days. The previous record was in 1997 when 281 litres fell although it is note worthy that that torrent took only six hours. The all time record dates back to 1877 when 374.6 litres fell.

• Facing the music • A British man has handed himself in to the British consulate in mallorca. He had been highlighted as one of the most wanted men by the Crimestoppers campaign aimed at the Spanish costas. The 27 year old man was wanted in connection with drug trafficking.

• Walnut smashed with sledge hammer! • Police in mallorca raided a shanty dwelling belonging to an alleged drug dealer and found more than 4 million euros buried in cement in the garage. Along with the money over 7 kilos of jewellery, unspecified amounts of cocaine, heroin and marijuana were also found. After months of investigation more than 100 officers with a helicopter managed to arrest one man.

• I want to go Dutch • The Euro Health Consumer Index a Europe wide survey of health services has found Spain to have dropped in its ranking. Spain slid down three places from last year. This puts them 21 out of 34 countries surveyed. Drastic improvements in efficiency and quality were recommended. The Netherlands was seen to have the best health care system in Europe for the second year in a row. for later. Maz and Kristine will be back at The Loft on Sunday 1st November. • Starving for a drink! • Ten people from the inland area of Malaga, Valle De Abalajis, have gone on a hunger strike because after seven years of living in their properties they still do not have mains water. The problem affects some 200 dwellings and a dozen farms. Up until now the water has been delivered by tanker. The properties have all the necessary documentation for connection but still nothing has been done. The major responded by making a plea for calm. • Madrid is for the high-jump • Half a million people turned up in Madrid city centre to support Spains bid to host the 2016 Olympics. Spain is up against stiff competition for this event. Rio De Janeiro want the games there and south America has never hosted the event. Tokyo also have a look-in but they held it during the sixties. I hope Spain´s chances were

not scuppered when the rally ended with a concert by David Bisbal.

• E.T.A stirs • The Basque country terrorist organisation has officially ended what it called it`s “period of reflection”. They have made a reaffirmation to the use of violence to procure its demands for the right for the Basque people to vote on their independance from central government.

• Chemists to the rescue • From the end of September the “Morning After Pill” will be available in Spain as an over the counter product. This is, in part, a response to 6,500 abortions in girls under 18 that took place in Spain last year (500 were under 15 years old). This is also why there has been no age limit set for people wishing to purchase the pill. This new legislation runs along side changes in the abortion laws which will allow unconditional abortion at 14 weeks from the age of 16 without the parents consent. The current legislation allows abortion up until 22 weeks in cases of rape, if the baby is deformed or there being any health risk to the mother. The health minister has stressed that the morning after pill should not be used as contraception but only in emergencies. PAGE

hange can be a cumbersome beast. A lot of people fidget and groan at the mere mention of it. Some sticks in the mud even fear it. Change, none the less travels with us through this life and is as much a part of every day as power-cuts and noisy neighbours. Change has always been controversial and in the name of caution should always remain so. On one side of the debate we have evolution and the natural unfurling of the universe´s novelties and on the other we have the “Plain English Society”. Don´t get me wrong, I suspect there is a need for someone to hold the reins of unbridled change but we should remember that you can all too easily flog a dead horse. In some ways trying to stop change is just that. Language, in particular is moving on, so these days, with English especially, if you aint busy being born you´re busy dying. The advent of mobile phone text messaging, instant messaging and chat room conversation gave rise to a somewhat surprising development and that is the need for people to communicate as fast as their fingers would let them. This gave rise to what some people call “Text Speak”. Text speak is a kind of code designed to cut down the number of characters used when using a keyboard to convey a message. A common example of this new language would be the word “L8R” meaning “later”. As time has gone by thousands of these abbreviations have sprung up. So much so that there are now dictionaries devoted to the subject. This brings us to the great work being undertaken at www.lingo2word.com These chaps are very much the Nemesis of the Plain English Society. This becomes immediately obvious in their website’s statement of intent. “lingo2word is devoted to demystifying the new internet shorthand language of text messaging, chat rooms and e-mails. We are devoted to text messaging in all forms”. Lingo2word have a translating device that converts text-speak to English or English to text-speak, the latter being handy for those of us

that want to appear more “hip” than we actually are. You can copy and paste into the “Translator Box” so it’s easy to drag text you may not be able to read from other places. They also have an online text-speak dictionary and some entertaining examples of the world´s newest language. The examples are set out in a dropdown menu with categories such as Xmas, Rude, Jokes, Love, Hot Texts and even one called Hate. I feel it just would not be right if I didn´t drop in a few examples. From the romance section: “4getin u is ard 2du, 4getin Me is ^2u, 4get Me not, 4get Me neva, bt don’t 4get were gr8 2gevva” (Forgetting you is hard to do, forgetting me is up to you, forget me not, forget me never, but don’t forget we’re great together.) From the joke section: Q:Av u hurd D jk bout Dbuta? A: I buta nt tel u, it myt spred! (Have you heard the joke about the butter?) (I butter not tell you, it might spread!) I’ll let you guess what section this next one is from: “iP3P33U X35 ihUJOH 05 W,I 35V37d 3W d73H, turn fone ^side down” At this point I feel it would be fun to run a little competition to see who can send the correct translation of that last message in to me the soonest. I think we have space for one more text joke before I say goodbye. 1 nyt a policewoman pulls ovr a : *)drvR. She politely asks im 2 step outa hs car. He willingly dz so. summer, a period when it doesn't need any help to fill up. I also noticed that, certainly in the area of the paseo opposite Pueblo Diana, the vegetation is looking very sorry for itself, although with the recent rain it has perked up a bit. I can only assume that the automatic watering system has, like the cycle path, not been maintained. In fact it's hardly an assumption. I have spotted quite a few areas where the black irrigation tubing is literally broken in half. Perhaps it's actually the latest scheme to reduce mosquitos. Anyway, being old and retired I now have time to do things like walk along Mojácar's Paseo Marítimo. Strolling along it I noticed that for every person walking along the paseo there was an equal number walking along the cycle path instead. You can't really blame them. After all there is virtually nothing to warn them they are on a cycle path. Nearly all the bicycle signs that were originally painted in yellow on the red coloured path wore out years ago, and they have never been repainted. Perhaps this is where the town hall should be spending our tax money - instead of wasting it on trips for the boys to functions such as Fitur in Madrid. Fitur mainly attracts visitors to Mojácar in the

That same issue of the Voz de Almería (21st September) carried an interesting flash back to 1979. There was a report on reverse osmosis being carried out under the sea, a pilot project that had been set up in Garrucha. So just in case you think that reverse osmosis desalination plants like the one in Carboneras are a new idea - think again.

The Voz de Almería, on 21st September, reported that Almería has the lowest proportion of blood donors per head in the whole of Andalucía. All I can say is that their reporters, as well as being maths duds, obviously haven't seen our tax bills! Actually, a friend of mine has a theory about the reason why so few people in Almería give blood. When they offer themselves as donors their blood is tested - and found to be so full of alcohol and drugs that it’s rejected.

A few weeks ago I read a headline in La Voz de Almería which translated as "Requests for work permits by foreigners fell by 300 percent." These reporters are supposed to be educated people. Did they not do maths at school? The paper headline would have been correct had it stated that there were 300 percent MORE requests last year than this, but that's not the same as saying that there were 300 percent fewer requests this year than last year - which is as impossible as claiming humidity to be 110 percent! My sister-in-law tells me that she recently went to Bonita to have her hair done and discovered that Debbie, who was doing her hair, used to live just fifty yards from where she, my sister-in-law, used to have a shop - in Charminster, in Bournemouth. They had a happy time chatting and catching up on bits of gossip concerning mutual acquaintances although, as usual for such encounters, they themselves had never met during the days they were but a few doors apart. Debbie, by the way, worked in Bournemouth at a hairdresser's called "Scissors" which, I gather, was so successful that it later became a franchise.

On Sunday, 4th October, my partner in crime and I strolled down the paseo as far as Tito's for our morning tea and coffee. There we bumped into our old friend Pat Moroney, of Mojácar village, who was in the company of a couple more of our old friends. We discovered that she was there in celebration of her birthday, so many happy returns Pat. In the old days I'd have driven to Tito’s and would have been able to rush off to get my camera, then return to take your photo. So just be thankful I've retired - and pretend you haven't read this felicitation. Talking of old days, that was the era when you would read about hunted criminals who skipped the country by catching a plane or boat. A couple of years ago, coming in from Cartagena on the toll road, we decided to turn off at Pulpí, nip down to San Juan and then drive into Mojácar along the coast. It wasn't a “nip”. The section along the coast from San Juan to Mojácar is fine, but the bit between Pulpí and San Juan is a narrow, winding road with slow vehicles. It takes an age to traverse. However, I read that the Junta de Andalucía is to supervise 26 million euros worth of improvements. After flattening out the twisty bits and installing climbing lanes the distance will be cut by 20%. Eventually, driving to Cartagena from Mojácar will probably be quickest via Villaricos and San Juan, but for the time being, I still advise anybody going to Cartagena to pick up the toll road at Vera. The extra time it takes via San Juan is not worth the saving of about 2 euros in toll charges.

Nº 359

last. This past summer 112 people were nabbed at the port or airport trying to "flee abroad" mainly to Algeria. I'm surprised that so many criminals try to use such heavily supervised exit points. Surely they could book a return passage on one of the pateras that bring illegal immigrants to Spain. After all, such boats are not subject to immigration and border controls and, anyway, who wants to stop illegal immigrants from leaving! When we first came to Spain, and for many years afterwards, we would remark upon the cavalier attitude of workmen. They would start to dig a hole, finish work at five o'clock and come back the next day, having fitted neither covers nor barriers. Later, workmen would stretch a flimsy piece of tape around the hole, which you couldn't see in the dark anyway. Over the years I have personally rescued and helped many people who have suffered injuries, including broken legs, when falling down an unprotected hole. On some occasions the hazard was an access manhole where the cover had gone missing and had not been replaced. When contacted the authorities would invariably shrug off the problem. Anyway it seems that civilization is at last catching up. Last year in Almería city there were 240 court cases against the city council or private builders by people who had fallen or suffered injuries due to such work. Who knows. People might even start suing the local councils and builders in Eastern Almería province if they don't put up proper barriers and warnings. Many of them do still seem to have the attitude of shrugging off responsibility beyond writing a warning sign to inform you that it's your fault if you fall down the hole - a few nasty fines might prove good medicine. The trouble is, how long would it take for the fine to be imposed? According to data from the provincial courts of justice, three courts in the province, to whit number 5 of El Ejido, number 3 of Roquetas de Mar and number 1 of Vera, share between them a backlog of 10,000 cases, most of them concerned with unpaid bills. I whipped out my pencil and paper and did a little calculation. If we assume that each court's backlog is 3,300 cases and that, working flat out, each court could clear four cases per day - which is a very optimistic assumption - it would take around eight hundred and twenty five

Reading a Spanish paper I spotted some good news, provided you happen to be a single woman who is not living near the beach. It appears that towns in Spain's interior are developing an overdose of single, middle aged men. The ratio is currently 86 women for every 100 men. Part of the reason is the emigration of people of working age, and especially females, in search of better work opportunities. In 2001, around 45% of the population in any village had lived there since birth but now, only 7 years later, this percentage has dropped to 38%. I Hotel Playa Rio Abajo

Cajamar started out as a small, provincial bank, based upon Almería province. Over the past few years it has slowly spread its tentacles and is now expanding at an ever increasing rate. This year it has expanded into the provinces of Burgos, Ciudad Real, Salamanca, Soría, Zamora and even into Banco Santander's home province of Cantabria. In September it expanded operations further, opening branches in the principality of Asturias. Cajamar, by the way, is a cooperative bank with more than half a million Spanish members of its co-op. illaricos town hall has given the go-ahead for the 3rd annual Wacky Races in aid of Asprodalba to take place on Saturday 7th November on the streets of the village which will be closed-off for the event. In flamboyant style, teams of energetic volunteers will push their carts in a series of races reminiscent of the

famous TV series featuring Dick Dastardly and Penelope Pitstop, to win the Asprodalba Trophy and become Spain's 'wackiest racer'. Starting at around 11:00am outside Taberna Cristina in the village centre and finishing about 4:00pm, the fun day out will be complemented by a range of sideshows, stalls, children's games and refreshments as well as a grand raffle and an auction which will include an original “Calendar Girls” programme signed by the cast of London's Noel Coward Theatre including Jerry Hall, Anita Dobson and June Brown, and a ‘Wacky Repsol fuel station

So far, five teams have pledged carts for the event. “We aim to better last year’s race whic h raised thousands of euros for Asprodalba,” says event Chairman Tom Tannant, “so we would like more carts, drivers, pushers, race marshals and so on. Anyone who wants to help can contact me or drop in to Taberna Cristina in Villaricos.” He said. “In particular, we would like more sponsors and stall holders,” he added. This year’s event will also feature a display of classic cars dating from 1938 provided by Los Coches Classicos de Levante, a British Formula 2 Chevron B27-42, a linedance display and the Spectrum Radio Roadshow. Last year, Asprodalba (an occupational centre on the outskirts of Vera for people with learning difficulties) entered their own vehicle (a converted shopping trolley) but failed to reach the final which was won by ‘El Toro’ entered by Taberna Cristina. There were three good reasons for a “Grewsome” party in the Emerald Isle recently. It was a birthday party for Sean Grew (46) and his brother Steven (45), who uncannily share the same date. It was also a farewell party for their sister, Sharron, who had been here all through the summer. (left to right) Mitch, Steve, Jeannie, Sean's sister Sharron and Sean.

he Wacky Barber and Hairdresser have now been established on Mojácar Playa for over 4 and a half years. It can be found in the Guardia Vieja Complex in the Arcade behind Los Arcos Bar and next to Movieland with plenty of parking out the front. The Salon is run by Lisa, a fully qualified stylist who boasts over 15 years experience in both mens’ and womens’ hair and has managed salons in the UK, Australia and Canada. Now working alongside Lisa is her younger sister, Debby, who has

recently returned here from the UK where she has just acquired her NVQ Levels 1 and 2 in hairdressing, as well as a Diploma at the awardwinning Saks Academy in Covent Garden, London, under the watchful eye of celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton, best known for styling hair at the Covent Garden premises on the TV programme ‘10 Years Younger’. Debby is currently offering Junior Stylist rates on all hairdressing services from as little as 5 euros. In addition to hairdressing she is also fully qualified and practices various different styles of massage including Thai, which she trained for in Bangkok. She offers excellent destressing massages at very competitive rates. The Wacky Salon has a professional

but friendly and relaxing atmosphere with all qualification certificates on display and the girls are able to offer expert and professional advice as well as being known for having a laugh with the clients which makes a visit to the salon an even more enjoyable experience. Appointments are not always necessary and should you have to wait your turn there is a seating area with reading material in the salon. Alternatively you can telephone for an appointment or come in for a consultation. Overall, the salon offers excellent services at reasonable rates with friendly, but professional, staff so when you’re next due a cut or colour, or just fancy a different style, pop down and see what the Wacky Stylists can do for you. On the night of October 31st, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Hallowe’en.

By 800 AD, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 as "All Saints’ Day" - a time to honor saints and martyrs. We have already sold 10 copies and raised a further €50 so many thanks to Stephen. We will be selling more on Sunday 19th. On our big day we raised €2,088 for Jake, we had another €10 given to us a few days back from Angie on Mojácar Playa, and the other €50 from Stephen. We had some great All photos below are copyright Stephen Amore

In Scotland, turnips are traditionally carved into jack-o-lanterns. In America Hallowe’en is second only to Christmas in spending. People spend as much as $2.5 billion during Hallowe’en on candies, costumes, decorations and parties. Druids worshipped Samhain, the Lord of the Dead or the Lord of Darkness. The Druid New Year began on November 1st and Lord Samhain was believed to reign over the long winter months. Pumpkins originated in Central America. When Europeans arrived in the New World, they found pumpkins plentiful and used in cooking by Native Americans. They took seeds back to Europe where they quickly became popular.

raffle prizes and more were given to us on the day. For example Maggie, the Cake Lady from Bédar, gave us a fab chocolate cake which we flogged off slice by slice with a coffee which raised extra money. We had some brilliant musicans and a great big thank you to them. Ed lead the way and was joined by Arriba Arriba, Tony Justice, Tom Lee, Banjo John, Mandolin John, Simon from the Cactus Twins, Pony Tail John, Laurence, Kay from Antas, Keith on Guitar, Graham Steele, Sean Grew, Big Baz, Brendan O’Dee, Bob the Drummer, Phil Hadley, and then we topped it all off with Betty Swollocks who came sliding down the banister from our upstairs function room singing ‘it’s raining men’. We could not have held the day without them and we thank them so much. All these musicians by the way are looking for gigs and we have all their numbers and email addresses. I don’t think I ever want to see another burger or hotdog again ... our Caribbean Burgers went like hotcakes, so to speak. Can we please send out another great big thank you to all our customers and to the people who jumped in to help out on the day. For example, we asked our neighbour if he would like to be chairman, Bernard jumped at the chance ... little did he know we meant to hand out the chairs for rent a chair ... hee hee!!! Even Betty was up to his elbows in washing up liquid washing glasses for our girls behind the bar, Lauren, Katie and Fiona. They also worked like trojans. Our Sue was outside collecting glasses, taking orders, and then running inside slicing more and more onions. A fantastic team was joined by Ed’s wife, Jan, who also joined the team and did whatever was required to make the day go

There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with orange, the color of a pumpkin. Growing big pumpkins is a big time hobby in America. Top prize money for the biggest giant pumpkin is as much as $25,000 dollars at fall festivals. It is believed that the Irish began the tradition of Trick or Treating. In preparation for All Hallow’s Eve, Irish townsfolk would visit neighbours and ask for contributions of food for a feast in the town.

smoothly ... and it did go smoothly, without a hiccough. With it being cancelled once due to the fires and the second time due to rain, I was up at 4am looking out of the windows praying that this time the weather was going to be good for us. Ed actually started to sing at one point ... I see fire and I see rain ... Yeah, very funny Ed! We have raised enough money now for a hoist for Jake’s bath and a ramp for his garden. With the rest he can have just whatever he need’s or more importantly whatever he would like, suitable toys, for example. His Grandad and Nanny brought him to see us and he pulled his first beer in the Bar ... not to drink by the way, just for a pic. Siobhan, Alan, Lauren and Sue Bar La Montaña 697 302 129

like to thank the generous people of Las Garcias for raising over 500 euros at a charity event recently. This amazing amount was raised by Peter, Dennis, Ann and Jackie who provided bangers and mash, a raffle, quiz and plenty of wine!! What a kind bunch of people! Ladies ... are you sorting out your wardrobes? Have you got clothes that are nice but don´t fit and are taking up room in your house? Are you thinking they are too good for a charity shop? Well worry no more! The APSA animal charity in Albox is preparing for its November Fashion Show and is looking for good quality outfits for the models of all sizes. By donating your good quality items you will be helping the charity and another lady can benefit by buying your outfit! Please take any donations to the shop in Calle Ancha, Albox. Please help them to help the dogs in their care. Kristine and Maz were very excited about making it to their 2nd anniversary on Saturday 26th September and would like to send out a big thanks to all who came to help them celebrate and for their continued support and good wishes. Love and a big thanks also to their original "old timer" Debby for standing the test of time. They look forward to "currying on" the good work providing authentic indian food (and I might add, excellent service) to everyone. Look out for their logo appearing in a venue near you sometime soon as interest in their Curry Nights is hotting up!

Valley V iew ♦PETTER'S VIEW FROM THE VALLEY! ♦ ♦ You know how as soon as

somebody gets a good idea for a business plan everybody else wants to jump on the band wagon? That's why, for a while, there was such a proliferation of estate agents and why there have been so many people turning out magazines or newspapers. Over twenty years ago places like the Cave Bar hit upon the idea of holding a quiz and nowadays every other bar has one. Well by the same token, up the Almanzora Valley, everybody seems to have jumped on the "grow your own" band wagon. Hardly a day goes by when we don't read about people being arrested, having been caught with a large number of thriving marijuana plants. Congratulations to Leanne, lately of the old Beer Emporium shop in Albox, who last month gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. Passing by the Allbites entrance - it's a bit difficult not to do so with the present road diversion - I decided to stop for a cuppa. While I was there Liam showed me a 50 euro note that looked really genuine. Even present was the corrugated strip that most

♦ ♦

people run their finger over to make sure that the note is genuine. However, closer inspection in a good light showed a bit of shininess in that area; the corrugation had been glued on! These forgeries are very hard to detect without an eagle eye and an ultra violet scanner - even the colours are close. That's one of the drawbacks of living in a country which subscribes to a massive currency zone that is more widespread and far stronger than the dollar. Professional forgers turn their attentions to it, many in preference to forging greenbacks. I see that work on upgrading and improving the plaza outside the Marques de Almanzora's palace will be finished during October. It has cost more than 100,000 euros of which the Tourism Council of the Junta de Andalucía paid just under 15,000. Basically the paving, the lighting and the trees have all been replaced and they have put in two new, rectangular fountains since the old ones no longer worked. Meanwhile the Councillor for Social Equality and Health of the town hall of Albox has been working with a travel agency to organise a trip to Marbella for the doddery old folk of the municipality. The trip will be from 21st to 26th November. I read in the Voz de Almería that two old houses, both in Albanchez, collapsed during the recent heavy rainfall. One belonged to a Spaniard, the other to a Briton. Well, you can't say there wasn't any equality exercised.

he Legion provides financial, social and emotional support to those who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, their dependants and carers. In 2008, there were around 9.5 million people eligible for our support and we receive thousands of calls for help every year around the World. The Legion was founded in 1921 as a campaigning voice for the exService community and over 380,000 members continue to ensure this voice is heard. Although the needs of serving and ex-Service people have changed over the years, we are still here to safeguard their welfare, interests and memory. British Service Personnel are in action around the world every day of the year. They know that if they need our support – now or in the future – the Legion is always on active duty for them. The Legion is both a membership organisation and a welfare charity, the two working together. Everyone is welcome to become a member of the Legion whether you have served in the Armed Forces or not. It should also be noted that individuals do not need to be members of the Legion to receive support. Welfare support in Spain is of particular importance for the many people who find themselves isolated or alone. The key welfare issues affecting those living in Spain are healthcare, social care, emotional distress, financial support, and lack of advice and guidance on solving life problems. Legion beneficiaries are sometimes disenfranchised due to lack of integration, the language

barrier and lack of knowledge regarding state support. The funds raised by the Legion each year here in Spain are spent providing welfare support to our beneficiary group. This money is raised mainly at Remembrance time during the Poppy Appeal but also throughout the year by the 25 Branches throughout the District North Spain. We owe much gratitude to the many businesses, bars, restaurants and you the public, in assisting us raise this money. Last year over €88,000 was raised here. We know the financial difficulties that many of us are experiencing in Spain right now but we hope this will not stop our many supporters digging deep again this year. The majority of our Welfare work is delivered by dedicated Caseworkers. We are looking to recruit more Caseworkers, and volunteers do not need to come from within the Legion. If you wish to offer your time helping others and to assist us deliver this essential support work and if you feel you have the right qualities, please do not hesitate to contact: The District Welfare Officer, Wendy Dengate on 676 451 780. email: welfare.rbl.dns@gmail.com If you are in need of some support or advice or know someone who could do with our help also call the number above. Dear Editor Thank you again and again Tracey, for entering up so many of our club details on Pages 7, 17, 24 and 25 of your September/October 2009 edition of The Advertiser. Every piece of information is so precise and so perfectly correct. Your special efforts to every detail have been so well noted by many people. WELL DONE!! Pamela Woodbyrne (Pamela’s Line Dance Club) (Thank you Pamela and you’re welcome. Have tried to pretty it up for you this month. Tracey)

Hi Tracey, I would like to wish you luck in your new role as Editor for The Advertiser it must be an exciting time for you and a busy one! I have read the magazine for many years and it was part of my inspiration when launching www.mojacarmagazine.com. Mojacar Magazine is always on the lookout for news and interesting articles, I was onto Petter for a while for a personal profile but he always seemed elusive. We would be more than happy to feature you in one of the next editions … If there is anything that I can do to help please do not hesitate in dropping me a line. Once again good luck and all the best! Ian www.mojacarmagazine.com (Thank you very much Ian, it is both and I may prove to be equally as elusive! Tracey)

ha ha ha A Blonde Joke Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit a ranch in the USA, so remote that mobile phone coverage doesn't reach it. Since times are hard and they need to economise they decide they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock, rather than buying expensive calves that have been reared elsewhere. The brunette says she will take the bus to a farm about 200 miles away, where there is a bull going for sale quite cheaply. She tells her sister, 'If I decide to get the bull, I'll send you a telegram. Then you can hitch the horse trailer to the pick-up truck, drive down, and we'll haul it home.' The brunette duly arrives at the ranch, inspects the bull, decides to buy it, pays and catches a bus to the

telegraph office in the nearest town. Feeling friendly, she explains all about their inheritance, and their need to economise, before finally saying 'I need to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I've bought the bull for our ranch. Now she's got to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.' "Fine," says the telegraph operator. "And I wish you good luck. However, telegrams cost 99 cents a word so you might want to think about the text." The brunette nods, thinks for a minute, then says "I want you to send her one word 'comfortable'." The operator, puzzled, asks. "How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word 'comfortable'?" The brunette explains, "My sister's blonde. The word is big. She'll read it very slowly ....'com-for-da-bul." Thanks to Petter for that!

I have just received the latest batch of beach and boat licences, at least licences for the over 65s and receipts for the younger guns. These licences should also be back when you read this. Andalucian coarse licences have been put in (6th Oct) and they should start coming back to me from the middle of this month. The next and possibly last Andalucian coarse licence applications will be put in by Bridie around the middle of November. There are new rules coming in on the 1st January which may stop those without an NIE number, that is, tourists and many part time visitors from getting a licence in future. The new rules may also close our last loophole making passing a 24 hour test in Spanish necessary. Remember an original in date English rod licence, available on line and from Post Offices in the UK, is needed for using the loophole. A passport copy and preferably an NIE copy is also required, the latter in case rules change sooner than later. For Andalucian beach and boat licences, a passport copy and NIE copy is required. Early to mid November is the expected date for the next batch of these being put in. Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam. www.almeriafreeads.com/ webcam. For further information on any of the above, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or telephone 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. Tight lines. Beachcomber John.
