t’s nearly Spring though at the time of writing we seem to have slipped back into windy winter mode! The only consolation is we know it won’t last very long. This issue sees the launch of a new Property Page, a dedicated page for agents and private vendors to showcase your property for sale or rent … you’ll find it on page 14. Also in this issue is a feature on Bédar, highlighting some of the local businesses, a summary of the area written by Phillipa Vickery and some great shots by Julie Jones Peel. This year’s month of March is a busy month for one’s social diaries which you could say includes feasts and fiestas across the nations. Mothering Sunday (UK), St Patrick’s Day, (Ireland), Dia de la Vieja (Spanish but local to the area), San José (Spanish Fathers' day) and of course, Easter, which prompts me to remind you to make sure your Easter eggs are kept out of reach of your dogs. Similarly don’t be tempted to feed them even just a little bit. Chocolate contains theobromine which slowly builds up toxic levels in their system and can result in muscle tremors, seizures, an irregular heartbeat, internal bleeding, or a heart-attack. ♣At the end of last month’s Sea
View column was the news of the announcement by Mojacar ’s mayoress that no bars could play music without a license, not even background music. Naturally this caused quite an uproar. In an interview with Richard Shanley of Spectrum FM the following was established … The rule regarding the music license is a law of Andalucia. Because last year ’s request by the town hall for bars to ‘moderate the volume’ was not respected, this year they have decided to apply the law which means that only bars with a music license are allowed to ‘play’ music – that is background music not live music. For live music (bands/ singers, not DJs) to last no longer than one and a half hours … between 15th July and 30th August … and between Friday and Sunday, bars must apply for permission from the town hall. Special events outside of these times will be given consideration. Licenses should take a couple of weeks to be granted. Neighbour complaints will be taken into account. Bars are being checked for their noise levels and a new bylaw is to be introduced to combat noisy holidaymakers causing a nuisance in urbanisations. Enforced will be closing times for bars, restaurants and chiringuitos weekdays 2am, weekends 3am. Regarding the problems of the ‘botellón’. Rosa Marie Cano said these are linked to the music. Last year 4,000 fines were issued. When asked where the revenue from the fines went she said that 80,000€ had to be spent on extra policing and 11,000€ was spent on postage to notify those who had received a fine! She seems set on enforcing these rules/laws and I quote, “We are going to control every aspect that damages the image of Mojacar.” So I guess all we can do is await the outcome/repercussions! An Easter Fair is being held at The Kimrick, Mojacar on Saturday 23rd March starting at 12pm.The MACS Easter Bunnies will be making their 1st ever appearance and holding a competition on the day to raise money for MACS. There’ll be lots of stalls, including, pies & cakes, art pieces & jewellery, handmade fairies, books, pickles & jams, handmade soaps, jewellery, handmade cards, fashion

accessories, ladies fashions, makeup and much more. The Bar will be open and hot & cold snacks available. For more information you can call 664 808 998. On Good Friday at Indigo Gym there is going to be a special Easter Bunny Zumba Megamix Party with Alison at 11.30am. Everyone welcome and apparently there will be some chocolate prizes!!! For the second year Etticut in Turre are having an Easter Bonnet Competition, entries cost 1€ and this will be donated to the Vera Orphanage Easter Egg Fund. The competition is open to children as well. Entries need to be in by 5pm, Tuesday 26th March. The winner will receive a treatment up to the value of 20€ in the salon. Hold onto your bonnets and go along to the Fun Day being held at Hostal Rural on Easter Sunday in aid of PAWS. There’s a fair amount of fun and frolics going on including face painting, good old fashioned competitions for the kids – egg & spoon, sack race, Easter egg hunt. A Country Fair with around 40 stalls selling a wide variety of items including homemade cakes. A Fun Dog Show with classes for Best Easter Bonnet, Owner most like dog, Cutest, Most obedient, Best senior, Fun agility, Best rescue and a Best in Show final. Bar and burger grill. Entrance fee is 1 euro, 12 years and under are free. Opens at 12 noon, set to finish at 5pm. In case of rain will be moved to April 7th. A Tug of War competition is being organised separately, to enter this you need to call 697 302 129. Zaks’ Plaice in Garrucha are pleased to announce that Rock Eel and Tinned Roe are back on the menu after finding a new supplier! The Tango Show with Belen and Tupac is back at La Cabaña Argentinian for the season but note the shows are now on Fridays, not Wednesday as before. Mama Paula who rocked Turre last year at the Turre Music Festival will be back at Hostal Rural on 15th June. Tickets, which actually haven’t yet been printed are being reserved like the clappers. local Spanish families go out enmasse for picnics in the countryside. Parents erect effigies of "La Vieja", stuffing her head or body with sweets, and stand back to watch the fun. Mothering Sunday in the UK is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it is often called "Mothers' Day" it has no connection with the American festival of that name. It originated from a period when most people spent their entire lives in the same church congregation. This church was called one's "mother church" and if anybody moved away, and therefore joined a different congregation, the new church was one's "daughter church.” If at all possible, everyone was supposed to worship in their mother church at least once a year and, by convention, the journey to do so became associated with the fourth Sunday in Lent - and hence the name "Mothering Sunday". In slightly more recent, Dickensian times, Mothering Sunday also became the day on which people who worked full time elsewhere, usually female domestic servants, were allowed a brief weekend off to fulfil this religious obligation. (No Victorian employer would have dreamt of giving workers an annual paid holiday!). Since parents seldom moved home, this meant children could combine it with a visit to their family. It is this latter aspect which the Americans corrupted into "Mother's day". (Note the singular, as opposed to plural, apostrophe) Nowadays everyone in the UK ignores the religious aspect and it is simply a day when mothers receive flowers, cards and possibly a present from their children. Another interesting day, celebrated in Spain with much more fanfare than Mothers' day, is Fathers’ day. (This is a "macho" country, after all!). The feast day of St Joseph is invariably on March 19th and although it is not an official holiday, every Spanish business will be closed from midday, as dads rush home from work to be in time for a family picnic outing.

♣The town hall has introduced a
new website, “dedicated to the British market for promoting tourism in Mojacar and its services.” You’ll find it at ... www.wishyouwerehere.es … I’ll let you make up your own mind about it! And finally … with March having so many traditional feasts and fiestas I thought you might be interested in a bit of history about some of them. A Spanish tradition, peculiar to this specific area, is the Día de la Vieja (Day of the old woman). Originally observed only in the Villaricos, Mojácar, Vera triangle, it has spread across much of eastern Almería province. It always takes place on a Thursday, 3 full weeks before Holy Thursday which, this year, means it will be on the 7th March. Nowadays it’s a bit of fun, but in the old days, when life in this area was extremely hard, and strictly dictated by religion, it was a way to give young children, the sick and the elderly a half-way break in order to survive the rigours of the Lent fast. On this day they would go into the countryside for a feast, open only to them. To amuse the children a paper bag would be filled with a few sweets and fixed to a primitive stick figure, the whole thing being decorated to look like an old woman. The children would then throw stones at it, until the bag burst and the sweets fell out. Expect many offices to close for the afternoon as

Melted butter Pack of Filo pastry
Fry the mince, onion, peppers and garlic in a little oil for 10 mins. Then add the cumin, chilli, salt and pepper, mix in and cook for a further 5 mins. Leave the mixture to cool. This should make 4 or 5 rolls … Place 1 sheet of filo pastry on a board and brush with melted butter, put another sheet on top and brush again. Place a large table spoon of the mix like a sausage at one end of the pastry and roll twice then fold the edges, do this until it looks like a sausage roll, brush with butter, cover with a tea cloth and place in the fridge for about half an hour. Shallow fry, turning the rolls until golden brown, place on kitchen paper to drain. Delicious with a mixed salad, your favourite dips and a cold glass of white wine.
Mediterranean Chicken Stew (serves 2) 4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs Half a jar of pasata 2 tsp of tomato puree 3 tsp of dry thyme 1 glass of red wine 1 sliced red pepper 1 sliced green pepper 1 jar of cannellini beans 1 large onion (sliced) Half a jar of roasted p eppers 3 cloves of garlic (chopped) Small tin of chopped tomato Salt and pepper (You can add anything you like carrot, mushrooms, potato, etc.) Place the chicken, onion, garlic, tomato, pasata, puree, jar peppers, thyme, red wine, salt and pepper in a roasting tray (along with any other veg you want add at this stage). Cover with foil and put in a preheated oven at 180o C. (Keep an eye on it as it is cooking as you may need to add a little water to keep it juicy). After 45 mins remove the foil stir in the sliced red and green peppers and the cannellini beans. Cook u ncovered for another 15 mins. Remove from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 10 mins. Leave to rest for 5 mins and serve with mashed potato ... enjoy! Page 6

www.advertisermojacar.com STEPPING STONES The Carers Support and Social Group We are a small group of people who meet once a week to provide support for Carers and those who are Cared For. At some point in our lives we have all taken on the responsibility of caring for someone or been cared for albeit in a small way. But, what happens when our world is turned upside down and we find ourselves in a rigid daily routine of caring for a loved one who, in turn, has to face the reality of being totally dependant upon us. Stepping Stones was formed almost one year ago and our aim is to o ffer respite and a little light relief for both Carers and their Dependants. We are a non profit making group run by volunteers. Our purpose is two fold. Firstly it is important to know that we have experienced professional nursing help at hand who can offer advice or simply chat to you. Secondly we have a social side with lively conversation and fun activities in a happy friendly environment. Carers can come alone, or bring their dependants, there are no set rules, and the atmosphere is very relaxed and informal. We use the Evangelical church hall in Turre and meet every Thursday morning from 11am until 2pm. We serve morning tea and biscuits and a light lunch. If you would like to join us but find travelling difficult please telephone us and we will arrange transport. As mentioned earlier, we are approaching our first anniversary and to mark the occasion we have organised an OPEN DAY which will take place on the 21st March at the home of Fanny and John, Cortijo del Talador, Camino Huerta de las Parras, Mojácar. There will be a Free raffle ticket on arrival and lots going on for what promises to be a fun afternoon. Please do telephone should you need transport or further information. www.advertisermojacar.com T Europe has finally decided that about 219 million euros of FEDER Eu funds granted to Andalucia between 1994 and 1997 seems to have gone missing. Andalucia was one of the largest benefactors of EU funds during this time, receiving about 3.3 billion which went towards roads, motorways, hospitals, schools, farms, etc, in an attempt to drag the place into the late 20th century. As you can imagine, with so much cash coming in, quite a few people.. how should I put it? Filled their boots is the expression I was searching for. Anyway, the EU tribunal has now fined Andalucia 29 million euros for a multitude of sins, including the awarding of contracts and payment of them without any work being carried out; contracts being awarded without proper process (ie, to the nearest primo), etc etc etc. Pais Vasco and Valencia are in similar boats. In all, 63 million euros must be returned this year by Spain to the EU. Amusingly, Andalucia has now said that Madrid must make up this shortfall. Their reason being? Incompetent legal defense! The Rose Singers are performing their 10th anniversary concerts on 19th of April at Living Water Church, Mojacar Playa and on 20th April at Camping Los Gallardos. You Can Not Be Serious By The Other Half My friend Paul was over on a visit from Torquay, or the English Riviera, as it likes to be called. Paul, over the years, has had more hare-brained schemes than you can shake a stick at, and consequently he has done or failed to do most things, and he knows, or thinks he knows, everything. His current area of expertise is Spain and all things Spanish. He looked at our pool, under its winter cover, in amazement bordering on shock ‘What did you get a pool cover for?’ he enquired incredulously. ‘How can you swim in a pool which has a cover on?’ I riposted that I had no intention of even thinking about swimming until at least May. ‘Why not?’ he countered with an air of benign confusion. ‘You live in Spain.’ ‘Cause it’s too cold.’ I explained patiently. ‘Rubbish! I swim in the sea off Torquay, which is nowhere near as hot as Spain. Look’ he indicated the patio thermometer. ‘22C, plenty warm enough.’ ‘That’s the midday air temperature’ I countered. ‘Not the pool water temperature.’ ‘Well of course not! You’ve got a cover over it, the warm air can’t get in.’ I was about to embark on a detailed and scientific explanation of mean temperatures and thermo-dynamics when he made a remark too far. ‘You’re a wuss.’ He said. ‘Come on! Let’s get this cover off, and we’ll have a dip!’ I felt it necessary to take a stand. A wuss indeed! ‘I’ll take the cover off’ I said firmly, ‘If you’ll have a swim.’ He heard my tone. Our eyes met. ‘Ten lengths.’ I added. I wasn’t going to let him get away with dipping a toe in and mocking me forever after for being, as he called it, a wuss. He hesitated. ‘Five.’ ‘Seven.’ He wriggled uncomfortably. ‘Maybe I’ll leave it for now. My back’s a bit iffy.’ I arched an eyebrow but we called a truce and went indoors. ‘Don’t fancy a dip, then?’ the Higher Authority asked him sweetly. ‘We can get that cover off in no time at all, can’t we, dear?’ We exchanged a knowing smile. We were united in sickness and in health and in the face of insults. Paul clutched his back and grimaced. ‘Back doesn’t feel too good. Don’t think I should risk it. Maybe tomorrow.’ The pool was never mentioned again during Paul’s stay. PAGE 27

www.advertisermojacar.com 12 months ago, on 11th March 2012, I lost the love of my life for 42 years, my other half, my soul-mate - my husband, Keith Oakes (age 63). He lost a hard fought battle with Prostate Cancer and, to honour his life and mark his passing, I would like to remind all women/men to ensure their male partners are aware of their Prostate. In 2004, when Keith was first diagnosed, we published something in a local paper and were happy to hear that the local farmacia did notice an increase in men requesting a PSA test; we hope that by doing that someone's life was saved. In Keith's memory I reproduce the article (below), in the hope that it will encourage more men to go to their doctor, or the local farmacia, and ask for a PSA test - PLEASE DO IT, it could save your life!! Please don't let my husband’s loss of life be in vain; he was a firm believer in telling everyone who would listen that they should be tested, and I know he would want me to carry on spreading the word. 10,000 men die from Prostate Cancer every year in the UK alone - if it is diagnosed early enough it can be cured. THIS IS IMPORTANT ... If you are a Male, 50 and over, OR have noticed changes in your urinary habits then you should have a PSA check. PROSTATE CANCER In July 2004, whilst back in the UK for 2 months, to escape the heat and leave Mojacar to the holiday-makers, Keith (aged 56) was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. We left the hospital in total shock – totally floored by the news. We thought our world had fallen apart – and it just wasn’t fair! We love our life here in Mojácar and want to carry on enjoying it. Naturally we first went through all the endless questions: What caused it? Why Keith? How long does he have? Then we calmed down and began to research the various options available and there are many, especially ‘if’ it is caught in the early stages. Unfortunately for Keith, because the diagnosis wasn’t made early enough, there was no apparent cure, just the option of controlling the cancer until such time medical research comes up with a cure for advanced prostate cancer. The prostate doesn't usually come up during casual conversation, so you may know little about this gland and the importance of a PSA test every year; we were the same, we knew very little, but the diagnosis prompted us to learn about it. What/Where is the Prostate Gland The prostate is a gland of the male reproductive system. The prostate produces some of the fluid for semen, which transports sperm during the male orgasm. Normally, the prostate is quite small - it is nearly the same size and shape as a chestnut. It is located in front of the rectum, just below the bladder,

and wraps around the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out through the tip of the penis. The prostate is made up of approximately 30% muscular tissue, and the rest is glandular tissue. Prostate Problem Symptoms indicating a possible “prostate problem” – not necessarily cancer, but worth getting checked out by your Doctor, include frequent urination (especially excessive times in the night), incomplete emptying of the bladder, a weak or interrupted urine stream and difficulty starting urination. However, not all men have symptoms – so even if you are not experiencing any of the above, if you are over 50 why not go for a PSA test anyway – it can’t do any harm can it – better to be safe than sorry! What is a PSA Test? It’s a simple blood test. PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a protein made by the prostate gland, which naturally leaks out into the bloodstream. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood. Why have the Test? The PSA test could detect early prostate cancer before you notice any symptoms, or before your doctor can detect any changes in your prostate. The benefit of finding a prostate cancer at this early stage is that it might be possible to remove the cancer by an operation or destroy it with radiotherapy and thus save your life!!! What does it tell me about my prostate? A raised PSA level (generally more than 5.0 ng/ml) is a sign of a possible prostate problem which needs to be investigated by your doctor. More often it purely points to something like an inflamed prostate (prostatitis), or an enlargement of the prostate that often comes with ageing (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, or BPH). Where can I get a PSA Test? Simple – If you live in Mojácar you just go along to the Farmacia in front of La Caixa bank (between the Parador and the Parque Comercial), this Farmacia houses the Laboratorio de Analisis Clinicos. The assistants speak some English. You just say you want a blood test for PSA and that’s it, you have your blood test and they tell you when to come for the result (generally about two days later). If you’re not in the Mojácar area, then just ask your local Farmacia where you can get it done. What does it cost? At the time of writing this article the PSA Blood test cost approx. 25€ - a small amount to pay for peace of mind! Alison of Get Fit, Stay Fit held a party at The Kimrick to celebrate 18 years of teaching fitness in Mojacar at the same time as raising funds for MACS. The evening started with a fun fitness party with fellow instructors Doretta, Sandra, Tracey and Elena all doing a turn. Phil and the Invisibles provided the live music and DJ Digit-Al, the disco. The night was honoured with a guest appearance by ‘Jane Fonda’ aka Curtis Helm!! The fantastic amount of 1,140€ was raised. Alison thanks you all, and also thanks the donators of the raffle prizes.
