ast month I had been reJulianed! This month I’ve been Ettifished at Etticut hair salon in Turre and food allergy tested by Jackie of Harmony Therapies also in Turre. The Ettifish was unexpectedly pleasurable. Having ticklish feet I was worried how I would stifle the screams but it wasn’t ticklish at all, more a tingly sensation. The only thing I can liken it to is that of ‘spacedust’ and the way it fizzes and pops in your mouth. I felt like I was walking on air when I left. The allergy test was completely painless and very informative. No needles are involved!!! All you do is hold a small electrode connected to an ‘EAV’ machine. Jackie then uses a probe on an acupuncture point on a finger on your other hand, the machine then measures your body ’s response to the ampoules of various foodstuffs placed in it in turn. There was a phew of relief when the chocolate and white wine responses were normal, bread and cakes I can learn to live

without! I would recommend it to anyone especially as it is only 30€ at the moment instead of 50€. It may well give you the reason for symptoms that otherwise have no explanation. I wasn’t going to but I can’t help it … its 60 sleeps, 3 hours, 14 minutes and 46 seconds to Christmas!!!! Or it was at the time I wrote this. ‘Advertisees’, please start thinking about your Christmas messages. To those who send in their events please note there is no January issue so all January dates need to be included in the December issue, the ultimate deadline for which will be 25th November. If you miss it don’t worry, I can include it on The Advertiser facebook page. Until next month, Tracey

From the 1st October the UK Customs guidelines for the import of cigarettes and tobacco from EU Countries changed. Although there is still no limit on products imported for personal use, the guideline limits are now: 800 Cigarettes (was 3,200) and 1kg Tobacco (was 3kg). The existing limits on cigars, cigarillos, beer, wines, spirits and fortified wines remain unchanged. If you import more than the specified limit and a customs official from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) believes the goods are for a commercial purpose then they may seize them and any vehicle used to transport them, and may not return them to you. And finally … Apparently someone has fallen for this scam. I’m not sure if it’s right or not but better to be safe than sorry … The AMMYY Scam has been around a while but it has recently surfaced in the Mojacar area. This is what happens … You receive a phone call purporting to be from Microsoft Technical Support, Telefonica, or some other reputable organisation, the name of which you recognise and respect. They claim that your computer is reporting problems or is infected with a virus, trojan or other malware and that they have called to assist you in fixing the problems. They then get you to turn on your computer and follow their instructions to install remote control software, normally on www.ammyy.com or www.logmein.com, so that they can fix the problems on your computer for you. These are legitimate programs that allow a computer to be accessed and controlled remotely over the Internet. They are usually used for technical support. If you follow their instructions you will set up perfectly legitimate remote access to your computer which will then allow them to log in to your computer from anywhere in the world and control it in the same way as you do with your own keyboard and mouse. What then happens is that they access your computer while you are still on the phone and claim to have detected many problems. Then they demand money (by you giving them your credit card details obviously) to fix your problems. The charge can be anything up to 200€ or more. If you decline, they threaten to crash your computer. Naturally, if you have fallen for it and followed their instructions and installed the remote access software, then they could actually do what they want on your computer, at any time you are connected to the Internet, including deleting files or stealing personal information etc. Also, they could have remotely installed all manner of trojans or keyloggers etc. while they had access pretending to check your computer. More on it at http:// antivirus.about.com/b/2010/12/08/ ammy-com-scam.htm

Retirement Life in Spain Retirement to Spain is a dream many people have; the sunshine, outdoor life and the slower pace. Moving house in your own country involves a lot of changes; when moving to a different country there are even more factors to consider. As ex-pats we do not always know exactly what we are entitled to from ‘the system’; but it is surprising how much help and support is available. With the language and system differences it makes sense to have help and support to receive all the benefits you are entitled to. For some people help in their own homes is best, for others it is best to live in a community where support and friends are close by. If you would like more information Pia Retirement Homes can be contacted on 950 468 176 or 664 804 357. E-mail: info@retirementhomespain

ANGLICAN CHURCH MISSION PROJECT - HESHIMA REPORT Heshima, which in Swahili means “Respect” is a small, independent charity (Reg. no. 1114419 more details available at www.heshima.org.uk), staffed and administered entirely by volunteers to ensure all donations are directly targeted to need. Primarily working amongst children and women in Arusha, Tanzania, Heshima also supports a number of similar organisations in neighbouring Kenya. Acknowledging children to be the future of East Africa, the aim is to provide a well resourced Arts and Activity Centre that will bring children together from a range of backgrounds to learn from each other through creative play in a centre where learning is fun and education is creative and accessible to all. Traditional East African Arts of story telling, dance, music and art are employed and encouraged to challenge preconceptions and prejudice, to break down

taboos and to get young people to address sensitive issues. This Centre, although not yet fully completed, is already being used by local schools, orphanages, youth clubs and community groups, providing opportunities for young people to develop their skills and knowledge of a range of sports with the organisation of fixtures and competitions. In addition to the work amongst children, creative arts are being used to help inform the local community on ways of preventing HIV, malaria and waterborne diseases. Heshima also offers support and advice for parents struggling with family issues and works closely with the community in helping them find work, arranging training, resources and education as necessary, in which regard a number of sewing machines have recently been purchased and many local women trained in design and production of simple items for the ‘Fair Trade’ market. Another recent initiative has been the creation of a Mother and Toddler Group at which mothers are able to learn some basic English, which will improve their chances of getting a job whilst their children are able to engage in creative play: They sing songs, play games, listen to a story and have a go at Art and Crafts. All the activities are done in English, without some knowledge of which they get left behind at school and have no chance of being accepted into a secondary school. ss sizes in local schools are huge. Many teachers try to teach classes of 70 or more. Children have to share desks and chairs and there are few resources. Heshima offers children more individual help on every Saturday, using trained off-duty teachers to listen to their reading; help them with their Maths and spend some time developing a sport such as basketball or swimming. This supplements what they get in

school and they are able to ask for help with topics they do not understand. Saturday school is making a difference and has helped many students to improve their confidence and therefore their achievement in school. Knowing that links between schools from different countries benefits everyone involved, Heshima initiates and facilitates shared projects and helps to arrange school visits and exchanges, as well as offering a variety of after school clubs and workshops to enable students to experience subjects that aren’t often taught in schools such as Drama, Music and Art.

REAL-COVERS is a well established business that has been offering swimming pool covers since 1993 in the Alicante ,Murcia, Granada and, mainly since 2001, in the Almeria area. Offering their Aircap Solar and Aircap Solar Reinforced covers at unbeatable factory prices, allowing you to extend your bathing season a little longer and get more use out of your pool investment. On the other hand, for those who prefer to save money during the winter months, private or communal pools, they highly ecommend their winter protection pool cover which will save you the expense of maintenance, chemicals and electricity, as none of these are needed during the period that you keep the cover on, meaning the cover will practically pay for itself in the first year. At the same time your pool cover will also help to prevent accidents (especially in communal pools) and will guard against frost which can create cracks in your pool in those colder inland areas. REAL-COVERS are installing many of these covers at the moment as they are offering such good prices and including all stainless steel fixtures and fittings.

Postcard from Blighty Following on from the unexpected “Indian Summer” at the end of September the weather here in the UK took a more normal twist as October got under way. Nature, which had been confused by the unseasonally warm weather, resulting in, for example; at RHS Garden Wisley, rhododendrons, azaleas flowering again, is now happier! Leaves are doing what they’re meant to do at this time of year. Contrary to popular belief the change in colour to shades of red, orange, umber and yellow in autumn is not caused by the leaves dying, but by a series of controlled biochemical processes within the plant. When the chlorophyll in leaves diminishes, the yellow pigments that already exist become dominant and give their colour to the leaves! (source; Sciscoop.com) Whatever....they make for pretty images!

orry to bring this up, but you must be made aware that it is nearly Christmas again. It’s November now so don’t forget that anything you want to buy online for Christmas should be ordered sooner rather than later. It’s the best and cheapest way to get prezzies to family and friends back home. Where ever that might be. If you are a little stuck for ideas about the littluns this year try www.northpole.com It’s a fantastic site for kids to play on with lots of christmassy games and activities for free. Of course something this good has to have a revenue stream so there is a toy shop incorporated into the site. I’ve checked it over and there definitely seems to be a leaning towards tasteful and educational toys. This site was built responsibly. The site has many interactive features that I, at least, found to be fun. While I was there I got to

sing some songs with the elves, something I haven’t done since Glastonbury ‘87. Then I built a snowman, something I haven’t done since London ‘77. There’s tons of fun things to do on this site for the kids and even pretend grown-ups will have a giggle. It’s about as fun as Christmas shopping can get too. Northpole.com has Christmas recipes for you to play at with the kids, they have a facility to send and receive letters to and from Santa, these letters can be personalised too. There is a section where parents can log in, this means the kids can not see this bit. Here you can organise a letter from Santa and even a birthday card for later in the year. You can access personalised stories and something called a “Good Deeds Calendar”. They have this to say about that; “Parents, use our free Good Deeds calendars to encourage a spirit of good behaviour throughout the year, not just before Christmas! Decorated with delightful northpole.com drawings, these calendars are a gentle reminder of Christmas all year long - and a great way to give children a sense of accomplishment.” What I have to say about that; “You

never know, it might work.” It’s all good on this site, you and your Sproggs will love it. Enough said about that for now I think, lets talk about Earthquakes. When I am not being a writer I have a real job. I am in “Earth Movement” I believe I’m considered to be rather good at it but when it comes to being good at moving earth no one comes close to Mother Nature, especially when she’s got a mood on. Yesterday I felt the earth move in a way I haven’t since Glastonbury ‘87 and on realising that I had just felt an earthquake I set about finding out more about it. I navigated my way to www.meteomurcia.com where I found out everything I wanted to know about local earthquakes and then I found out a good deal I wish I hadn’t. Their records for this region go from 1406 to about 2 hours before I sat down to write this column. The frequency of the quakes startled me. I had no idea there had been so many. The site shows the time, date and epicentre of all of them. The quakes are not really put into perspective until you get to1930 when the introduction of the Richter-scale makes comparison easier but, that aside, I now feel as though I might

live in something one might call a “hot-spot” and I’m not talking about the weather. If you did want to talk about the weather (and you probably do, if you’re British) that’s ok because www.meteomurcia.com also have all the stats on that too, including forecasts and current data. On the top right of the screen is a display with the temperature, barometric reading, expected rainfall (in millimetres), wind speed and direction and humidity. At this moment its 23 degrees, wind speed 6.7 kmh, Zero millimeters of rain and all is good. I just hope these earthquakes behave themselves. This site is a Spanish language site. At the top of the screen it offers you the option to change to other languages. It does this in the form of little national flags to click on. I tried this but most of the information remains in Spanish. Most of what you’d be interested in is written in numbers, such as times, dates and scale so you will still be able to learn something from it, even if you haven’t learnt Spanish….yet. Let me know about anything interesting you find out there on the www. You can contact me at advertisernavigator@msn.com El Navegador.

Dames in Spain were enthralled by Duncan Burr’s account of his ascent up Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in April 2011 which, standing at around 5891.8m, is the highest mountain in Africa. Duncan’s description of his climb had the ladies both amused and amazed at his endurance and determination. The climb and descent took Duncan 7 days to complete and his determination carried him through to achieve his goal. Not only did he succeed where many had failed to reach the summit but he raised an amount from sponsors of approximately 2,000€.

I, Curtis Helm, was so frustrated with all the talk of will it, wont it, about the new Paramount Theme Park Murcia opening that I went to Madrid to see for myself. Posing as an international journalist I got into the press conference and presentation held at the Villa Magna Hotel. Heading the presentation was Jesus Samper CEO of Parques Reunidos, Ramon Luis Valcarcel, president of the province of Murcia and Mike Bartok head of licensing for Paramount theme parks. They told journalists that the Paramount theme park and Lifestyle Centre would open in 2015 at a cost of over 1 billion euros. The park will open 282 days of the year from 10am-10pm. It will consist of 7 hotels and over 30 themed rides, Titanic, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Rango's Wild West, Sleepy Hollow, Grease, etc. The park will be situated between Alhama de Murcia and Fuente Alamo only 75 minutes from Mojácar. I spoke with Mike Bartok, head of licensing for Paramount, after the presentation who assured me that it was all systems go for the first phase of the project which will create 22,000 jobs in the building phase and 6,000 employees when the park opens in 2015. The park hopes to attract 3 million visitors in its first year with a projection of over 4 million by 2024. For more information contact Curtis Helm at El Retiro Gallery, Turre.

VIBRATION PLATES – HOW DO THEY WORK? By Phoebe Davies NOW AT Pampered, Palomares

Want to loose weight, cellulite and tone- up?? But don’t have the time….. Well by only doing 10 minutes exercise per day you can achieve all this. Have you attended the gym recently and seen people literally shaking in their boots (or should I say trainers)? This relatively new phenomenon has been created through the development of vibration plate machines, with many gyms now using them in the UK. But how do they actually work and what results can be achieved through incorporating this equipment into your workout? The main point of the vibration plate machine, if utilised correctly, is that more can be achieved in much less time when compared to traditional workouts, whilst at the same time enhancing the number of calories burnt. Its cause has also been helped by numerous celebrities endorsing such products and it’s now starting to receive recognition within the fitness industry as an invaluable piece of equipment. THE BENEFITS So what’s the theory behind it all? The vibration plate machine creates vibrations which can be felt throughout the body and in particular the targeted working muscle. These vibrations, which can be altered depending on the specific machine and the settings available, cause the muscles to continuously contract and relax at a rapid rate. It is this effect that is said to be responsible for bringing about the following beneficial gains;  Enhanced muscle and bone growth.  Enhanced levels of flexibility in the target muscle.  Enhanced calorie burning and overall metabolism rates.  Enhanced delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the working muscle. Although the research regarding vibration plate machines is relatively new, companies carrying out their own product reviews into its effectiveness have reported significant alterations in weight loss, muscle tone and strength and flexibility. The equipment has also been demonstrated to bring about beneficial changes in mood and energy levels and blood pressure levels.

We use a non-invasive method based on biofeedback on your body. You sit at a table and hold a small electrode connected to the EAV machine. The tester uses a probe to touch one of your fingers at an acupuncture point. The EAV machine measures your body response to food substances contained in small ampoules, which are placed in the machine in turn. Once any allergies or food sensitivities have been detected, we offer a simple elimination programme for the offending items, nutritional advice and remedial treatment. Why wait any longer to live the rest of your life pain free?

Get Fit and Healthy Day has restarted at Arriba Bistro & Café Bar. Meeting every Tuesday at 11am, it’s off for a 40 minute walk then back to Arriba for a healthy option lunch or skinny latte and low calorie cake.

Furthermore, vibration plate machines can be applied to almost any exercise you wish to carry out. Its only real limitation is your imagination. This can range from lower body exercises such as squats and lunges onto the plate, to upper body exercises including press ups and dips. The vibrations produced also create equilibrium difficulties and so the machine can be successfully utilised and applied to achieve vigorous abdominal and core exercises. The makeup and design of the vibration plate machine also enables everyone to use them safely, irrespective of age or ability. There is also massive scope to conduct rehabilitation techniques on the equipment to speed up the recovery process of an injury, although this should only be done under strictsupervision. Soon coming to PAMPERED in Palomares, 35 Calle Mayor. PAGE 15

www.advertisermojacar.com Celebrations continue across the province after the European Union announced it would finance a large part of the AVE high speed railway through the province. The EU will take over planning of the line and expects to finance it all the way down to Seville by the end of the decade. Our local railway will be up and running by 2018, we hope! The car boot sale at Camping Los Gallardos continues every Sunday morning and is getting busier every week! Stalls are 3€, and charity stalls go free. Just turn up or call 679970399. The Almeria Lawn Bowling Centre has now signed a contract with Nila S.A. to build the base of their new artificial grass bowling green. They are now negotiating time schedules for the UK based company that supplies the artificial grass, and hope to install the new green before the end of the year. But the ALBC continues to be open as normal to members and guests alike! They’ve had a busy autumn tournament schedule, but Captain Jim Pike tells me that they’re still delighted to welcome day guests or new members. So if you fancy taking up the game, but want a few friendly lessons to introduce you, pop along and have a chat with them. And the 20th anniversary birthday party celebrations are at full swing up at the campsite! Johnny Vee agreed to return for a once off concert and played to a full house standing room only!- and a whole range of exciting entertainers have been shipped in from across the south of Spain to entertain the guests. But their restaurant Miraflores hasn’t forgotten about their day to day customers - fish and chips on a Friday are busier (and better) than ever before!

Together with their Monday night quiz, Wednesday darts ‘n’ dominoes, Sunday Lunch and Thursday live music nights, along with the normal Zumba, bridge, etc, the restaurant at the campsite is in full swing as we head towards Christmas. There are already a number of functions booked over the Christmas period, but if you want an office party, a charity fund raiser or are simply a group celebration, Miraflores can organise any size party for any size budget. Although Miraflores is closed for Christmas day itself, they are having a lot of celebration before and afterwards, and their New Year’s Eve party is half full already! So if you want a 25€ ticket, for full entertainment and an absolutely amazing buffet, you’d best get a move on.

679970399 - 950469519 As one of the largest bars and restaurants in the area, we are able to offer our guests a full range of facilities, from a day at the pool, an enjoyable evening meal or a fully catered private function for up to 200 guests. Ask about our party plans from just 6€ a head! Open 7 days a week from 9am until midnight. Full a la carte and evening specials. Regular and special events throughout the year. Miraflores reservations: 950469519 Two earthquakes shook the province at the end of the month, a 3,7 in Cuevas and a 3,8 in Zurgena. They both happened at around 2 am on Tuesday 25th. No injuries or damage were reported, although they were felt as far away as Mojacar, and caused much excited comment the next morning! HITS mobile phone company continues with their “5 cent” plan, where it costs just 5 cents a minute to call any mobile or landline in Spain, and calls between HITS phones are free! Calls to the UK are as little as 15 cents a minute, and you can connect to the internet for just 5 cents a megabyte, perfect if you just want to check your email or surf facebook quickly! Pop into the shop at Camping Los Gallardos and talk to Gareth about signing up - it should be as easy as putting a new sim card into your phone, and you can even keep your old number. Gareth can also top up almost any pay as you go mobile phone in the world from the shop at the campsite, including most UK operators. And while you’re there, check out the campsites wide range of UK imported goods at low, low prices. From Marmite to Bovril, they’re got it in stock at surprisingly low prices! If you like fun quizzes, you should come up to Miraflores on a Monday night. Their fun quiz usually has over 50 people playing, and with a plate of freshly home made curry for just 5,50€ on Mondays, along with the a la carte, it’s a cheap and fun night out.

Having a party? We can organise any sort of event, either outside around our pool or inside in our huge 250m2 events room, from just 6€ a head. From Xmas do’s to birthday parties, anniversaries or wedding, charity fund raiser or company event, our experienced team promise a great time, for all sort of events between 10 and 200 people! Ever wondered why people choose to live on a mobile home site? Well, maybe it’s the friendly atmosphere, the community spirit, the onsite 24/7 maintenance teams, and the peace of mind you get from living among like minded folks in a quiet, friendly little village, rather than on a sixth floor apartment or out in the countryside in a remote cortijo! All we know is that the folks at Camping Los Gallardos have enjoyed the last 20 years, and are getting ready for the next decade! That’s all folks - David

Recently members of F.A.C.E. (Fundraising In Arboleas, Caring For Everyone), met Louise Fichtinger, representative of ACASA (Age Concern Acción Social y Assistencial). ACASA is the Spanish version of Age Concern who already have branches in Malaga and Madrid. F.A.C.E., the Arboleas Help Desk and the Arboleas Council are keen to get ACASA to set up in Arboleas or the Almanzora Valley in general. To this end talks are being held by all three organisations. The main problem is that finance is required to set up the organisation in the first place. The second problem is that Case Workers (Volunteers) need to be based in the area before the project can proceed. F.A.C.E. have donated 1,000€ to assist with the set up costs. This money is being held by ACASA and ring fenced so that the money will only be used for assistance to people in this area. If you are interested in becoming a Case Worker in this project please contact Louise Fichtinger, the Regional Co-ordinator for ACASA in Andalucia, by e-mail at fichtinger@gmx.net F.A.C.E. President, Adele Wrigglesworth said, "F.A.C.E. are very committed to this project, and should ACASA set up in the area, F.A.C.E. would continue to offer financial support." Continuing to raise funds, F.A.C.E. will be holding their annual Christmas Market on 2nd December at the Arboleas, Salón Multiservicios del Ayuntamiento. Full details will be announced at a later date. They have also on sale raffle tickets for a Grand Draw of 200€ which will be drawn at the Christmas market. Raffle tickets are on sale with the F.A.C.E. committee members. For any further information please contact Adele Wrigglesworth, 667 255 094. More information on the F.A.C.E. KENNETH MICHAEL DANAHER 23 August 1947 - 12 October 2011

Sadly Ken passed away in the early hours of 12th October 2011. He is pictured above working away, with that ever famous smile of his. Loved by all who truly new him. The © talisman picture was taken in 2002 and was part of a business report on the life and works of Ken in Mojácar. Ken’s mum, Lil, and his dad, Arthur, the professional boxer, retired here many moons ago and this was one of the reasons Ken decided to make his life in Mojácar. The sunshine helped, for he loved the warmth of the sun. Ken adored his family, he leaves behind his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a devoted family man, and will be sorely missed by them. All the family join together in saying goodnight and God bless to Ken. So loved. Ken was very popular and had many friends in Mojácar, on behalf of all the Danaher family I would like to thank everyone who attended his funeral and for their kind words of comfort. He will be missed, especially on pool nights. On a more personal note, as Ken’s wife and soul mate, I would like to say this … When the sun shines I will catch all your smiles, When there is a warm breeze I will feel your touch, When the wind blows I will hear your voice, And when it rains, we will down tools and wait till the sun shines again. Love you for ever and ever … and ever. God bless you and keep you safe, you in your small corner and me in mine. Jose (Danaher) xx

A dearly loved Mother, Grandmother, Great Gran and Friend. Born in the West Midlands and having spent all her adult life in the Midlands, Betty came to Spain 5 years ago and was a well known face at Indalo Players productions and Rose Singers concerts. Betty died peacefully in her sleep on 5 October 2011 after a short illness. She will be sadly missed by Anne & Rob, Sue & John, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her many friends.

On a hot, sunny 9th of October , 8 teams took to the beach to vie for the prestigious MOJACAR C. C. TROPHY. Old, young, male & female, all took part in this fun event outside Fantasia Restaurant. The competitors enjoyed showing off their skills to a supportive crowd. Each team played 3 games with the top 2 qualifying for a semi-final spot. In the1st, LIFESTYLE ENCLOSURES proved too strong for IBEX INS. & in the other, the GOLDEN KIDS (all juniors) failed by just 6 runs to overhaul the CANTORIA QUIZZERS. The final was an evenly matched contest between both newcomers CANTORIA QUIZZERS & LIFESTYLE ENCLOSURES with the latter batting 1st & scraping home to win by 12 runs & lift the coveted trophy. Thanks to Fantasia for hosting the event & making it a successful day for all to enjoy. A special award was donated by Sam Lewis which was presented to the GOLDEN KIDS for their enthusiasm throughout the day. Roll on the next.

The 5th WACKY RACES 22nd October 2011 VILLARICOS In aid of Asprodalba, PAWS and a memorial donation towards the Villaricos Easter Flowers. What a day! The weather was kind to us, teams in peak condition, karts newly painted and looking great. The event began at 12 o'clock sharp with a parade lap led by Ross and Cristina, the original bar owners when the Wacky Races started some 5 years ago. The parade consisted of 3 karts racing that day, the Taberna Cristina show kart and a specially built "Wind in the Willows" Toad car which will be appearing shortly in the theatrical production. Nine teams competed including Jet’s Bar all girls team in St Trinian’s theme! There was one familiarisation lap followed by a timed lap. The karts completed a circuit in around 30 seconds, one kart misunderstood the rules and did a flying lap instead of a standing start, it was either disqualification or race again, they still managed 3rd on this first round. Rest time for the teams meant entertainment for everyone else. Kezi from Jet’s Plaza Bar performed a brilliant belly dance raising over 100€, also dragging in some enthusiastic ladies to join her. She was followed by the novelty dog show in which 12 of the finest of Villaricos paraded around the ring, the winner being decide d by the ladies from PAWS, Mojácar, 1st prize - menu del día donated by Los Angeles bar. Singer Renee wowed with a well known Adele number followed by a Spanish duet with her Spanish friend and Kayleigh, a Benidorm X Factor finalist, belted out 3 red hot numbers. After the raffle draw it was back to the race. The 2nd timed lap started with a bang as the second kart off the line lost its steering at the crucial moment. A bit of DIY and it was back in action. There were only 2 minor crashes but no damage to people or karts. This race decided the semi final and final, the top 4 contestants being - SEMI FINAL - Costa Coches v Bar Genesis, FINAL - Marinasol v Taberna Cristina. Each team had to complete 2 laps of the circuit. The semi final was a close race but after a false start Bar Genesis crossed the line marginally in front. The final was a real nail biter, Marinasol shot into an early lead and held on for the first lap despite being "Blooded" by the Taberna Cristina team (disqualification loomed) who pulled ahead crossing the line fractions of a second ahead. In the spirit of the day Marinasol declined the option to appeal, saying in the best F1 style that, 'it was a racing incident.' so final positions were - 1st Taberna Cristina, 2nd Marinasol, 3rd Bar Genesis, 4th Costa Coches. Prizes were presented by Martin and Irene of Taberna Cristina amid much good humoured banter. A great day was had by all. Martyn and Irene would like to thank everyone who helped organise, donated, performed, competed and attended this event, they were the ones who made it a great success. Thanks to Almeria Angels who provided First Aid cover for the day and Captain Sunshine for keeping everyone up to date with the day’s programme. PS … Would the winner of the Desert Springs raffle prize please ring Taberna Cristina to collect the Official Desert Springs voucher.

Horrible Bosses ... For Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day), the Film w only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses Revie in to dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few too many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers … permanently. There's only one problem: even the best-laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them. Definitely one of the funniest films I've seen all year with numerous laugh out loud moments.

NESSA: An extremely friendly and sociable dog; we are certain that she had been well lookedafter and most likely lived in a home. However, she was abandoned and is now looking for a good home. Nessa is easy to handle and get along with. She is a lovely tri-coloured mix and is a medium to large size dog. All of her caretakers are very fond of her. She stoically puts up with her very bossy kennelmate and seems to possess a very tolerant and gentle nature. MATHILDA: Outgoing and sociable with people and the numerous dogs. Mathilda is eager to learn and to please, is paper trained but not yet fully house trained, and is starting to show good manners as she sits for her meals. Though she has had limited experience in cars, she has travelled well and has been quiet. Her favourite toys are tennis balls, bouncy rubber rings and ropes. She enjoys her daily grooming. She shows a healthy interest in her surroundings, plays most of the day with her sister, yet likes to curl up by your feet and spend quiet time with you. LOMA: Loma is an easy-going young dog that is sociable and has been friendly with all the dogs she’s met. She walks nicely on the lead and enjoys cuddling. She is fun and playful and seems to be a well-balanced and nice dog.

REINA: Described by the kennel manager as "a really nice and gentle dog", Reina has been noted to be well-behaved with all other dogs that she has come into contact with, both in her kennels and in her play group. She is generally a quiet dog and is not pushy; not one to rush forward to greet you through the sea of dogs at the shelter, she can easily be overlooked by visitors. However, once it is her turn and she gets to meet you she enjoys human company and especially likes to be cuddled.

‘Stop! Stand still. Don’t move.’ It doesn’t matter how much time a man takes to get himself spruced and walletted up to go out, a woman will take longer. This is a fact as certain as sunrise in Spain. I find that the best approach to getting ready to go out is to get out of the way as quickly as possible. To occupy the same room as a woman who is ‘getting ready’ is about as easy as sharing a basket with a cobra – fine as long as the cobra doesn’t see or hear you, and you don’t get in its way. I was going to take the Higher Authority out for an evening at the theatre followed by a meal – she likes a bit of culture, and in her case it seems to bring on an appetite. I had donned best bib and tucker and vacated the bedroom smart in timing and appearance, leaving her to empty the entire wardrobe, muttering something about not having a thing to wear while surrounded with enough garments to clothe the entire female population of the village. Then there was an expletive followed by silence. That is unusual, both the silence and the expletive. The Higher Authority does not usually need to use expletives, she has a Look which can stop a charging rhino, rendering expletives unnecessary. I knew that something was not going according to plan, so I felt I had no option but to brave the bedroom and offer support from a safe distance. It was as I crossed the threshold that the command to cease forward motion was given. I froze, mid-stride. She was bent over, both hands spread wide. In quick succession my thoughts were: She’s done her back in. A nanosecond later: We won’t be able to go to the theatre. Half a nano-second later: I’ve paid for the damn tickets. ‘What’s up, dear?’ I enquired gingerly from the doorway. ‘I’ve dropped the b******* butterfly.’ Fortunately I knew what she was talking about, so didn’t waste time scanning the room for a haemorrhaging insect. ‘Can’t you wear another pair?’ She straightened up, and prepared to Look at me. I quailed, but in Man’s darkest hour inspiration sometimes strikes. ‘If we go right now, we could catch the Joyeria before the show, and I could buy you another pair.’ We left the house 2 minutes later. I bought her earrings, the hook-through sort which don’t need butterflies. We had a wonderful evening. I am The Man!

I went out today (as I write) with ‘Orca Steve’ on his Garrucha moored boat. We were joined by ‘Chef Jeremy’ and ‘Paul the Rope’. We started by trolling inshore and it wasn’t long before I had a hit. There was no fight, just weight, and so I was not surprised to find I had caught a common species in these waters called ‘Mercadonarus Carrierbagus’. I didn’t bother with a photo! We started drifting and bottom fishing in front of the Garrucha lighthouse with an offshore wind in depths of 120 feet to in excess of 600. Many of the usual suspects were caught including swallow tails, combers, pandoras, pouting, poor cod and blue mouths. Jeremy lost a conger which had attached itself to something on the bottom and the line broke. Paul had a conger on for a while but lost it and reeled up to find a pair of lips hanging on a hook, it appears a conger grabbed a

small fish caught by Paul. Around midday the wind disappeared and we fished on a pancake flat sea for a while. This time was fast and furious fishing with lots of small stuff coming up. I was really annoyed at losing one good fish because by the fight and weight I couldn’t work out what it might be but 20 or so feet from the boat it shook its head for only the second or third time during me reeling up and it was gone, damn. The wind eventually started to come in from the South as it usually does around midday but before it got too strong I had a few tentative heavy knocks and I was literally standing up waiting for the big bend when it came. I fought this fish for about 5 to 7 minutes and again couldn’t work out what it might be. Déjà vu was it going to be again? I wondered. My three mates all called it a red snapper but I knew! It wasn’t, as the fight was totally different with the fish seeming to head dive and go round in circles. There was no head banging as such like in a snapper fight, I called it a small conger eel. After losing the first good fish I stayed standing up giving this fish not one inch of line and I was not a little surprised to see a red snapper weighing about 6lbs slide into the net handled expertly by our skipper Steve. It took me only a few seconds to realise why

this fish didn’t fight like it should, another hook from my trace had attached itself to the fish’s tail limiting the fight it was able to put up. The fish was taken away by Jeremy (head chef at Toscana Restaurant) and he will be cooking it for my wife and I tomorrow night but I can’t hold up The Advertiser to tell you how good it’s going to be, but it will be for sure. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks at the Azafran restaurant. For the next meeting tel 677 655 049. Andalucian coarse fishing licenses are no longer available through my contact and as suspected the loophole has been closed by the authorities. My only surprise is it took them so long! I will of course continue to try and find another way out of non Spanish anglers having to take the course in Spanish. Girl Friday can still get beach and boat licenses and she will be going for the next batch in the next couple of weeks. For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. See more about the Beachcomber, past fishing reports and photos at www.beachcombermojacar.com

90 years of the Poppy Appeal The ‘British Legion’ was formed in the UK on 15th April 1921 by the joining together of 4 national organisations set up after WW1 to help all those ex-servicemen returning from War. Today, being in its 90th year of formation and gaining Royal Charter in 1971 thus becoming The Royal British Legion, it is still the foremost charity looking after the welfare and care of the serving and ex-serving men and women and their families. Each year poppies are available to remind us of those very dedicated and brave people who give their lives for our freedom. In addition to providing wide ranging welfare care we are the Nations custodian of Remembrance ensuring the efforts and sacrifices made are never forgotten. More recently, members here in Spain are proud to be part of what is now known as The Royal British Legion In Spain having achieved formal registration in accordance with Spanish Law to carry out its works and as such has no connection with any other organisations or indeed clubs. However, Help 4 Heroes is counted as one of the contributors towards welfare where difficulties for a Beneficiary are being experienced. The “Shoulder to Shoulder with All Who Serve” motto indicates the aim of The Royal British Legion in Spain to fundraise for those in difficulty. Importantly all money collected here in Spain is actually expended on welfare for those who are eligible in Spain. The Mojacar Branch Membership, formed almost 20 years ago, has been very successful in their efforts of fundraising for the Poppy Appeal by organising throughout each year various functions & trips, together with the generosity of individuals. In 2009 the extraordinary amount of €12,383.97 was raised and amazingly [despite the credit crunch] we were able to achieve the sum of €10,687.46 for 2010. We are looking forward to collecting throughout Mojácar and the surrounding areas from the 14th October until Remembrance tide for 2011. As custodians of the '2 Minute Silence for Remembrance' this year as has been the tradition with the Mojácar Branch, the Remembrance Service will be held on the 13th November at the Anglican San Pasqual Church Mojacar at 10.30am with a lunch to follow at The New Kimrick Restaurant and anyone wishing to join us should contact 950 473 189.

History of the Poppy Poppies were first suggested as a symbol of Remembrance in the USA by Miss Moina Michael in November 1918 and were adopted by the American Legion in 1920. In August 1921, Madame Guerin introduced her poppies, made by a French-American charity's widows, to the British Legion. The next suitable occasion for a poppy-linked appeal was Armistice Day and so the first Poppy Appeal was born. They didn't know if it would work but ordered nine million poppies ! On the day itself, the first poppy was bought in London a few seconds after midnight. From that moment it was a seller's market: the poppies were on sale at an official price of threepence but before breakfast single petals were selling Smithfield Market for £5. All day long motor cars fetched poppies and crate after crate was emptied until supplies ran out. A message from Queen Mary brought sellers to Buckingham Palace, but hearing that poppies were in short supply she bought only two. A basket of poppies auctioned at Christies's raised nearly £500. The first appeal raised £106,000 (nearly £30 million in today's terms) and all the poppies were supplied from France. In 1922 the "Poppy Factory" was established in the UK to keep costs down and employing disabled ex-Servicemen to make the poppies. Three times as many poppies were ordered for the next appeal and it made £204,000 with lower overheads. Note that poppies were "sold" when the appeal started but charity legislation now requires them to be 'distributed in return for donations'.
