THE SCARBOROUGH FISHING FLEET 2015 The Scarborough fishing fleet, though diminished due to EU regulations, remains defiantly vibrant. Individuals operating small vessels work crab/lobster pots locally, while larger boats, up to 10 metres, range between Robin Hoods Bay and Flamborough Head. Catches remain healthy and are mostly kept alive in holding tanks for export. The trawling fleet, which has seen the greatest reductions now comprises of half a dozen under-10 metre craft and three larger vessels. The main species, cod and whiting are caught all year round, while haddock, plaice and sole are more seasonal. Bass, skate, turbot, brill, and halibut, though not a targeted catch, are often caught. The majority of fish landed finds its way to local hotels, restaurants and fish and chip shops though some goes to inland markets or abroad. A seasonal langustine (scampi) and good stocks of scallops and queenies, attract larger visiting craft in summer. This shellfish is landed directly to refrigerated trucks for onward delivery to factories in Scotland. Scarborough harbour has seen many changes throughout its history but remains the town’s focal point. Its boats and men continue to challenge the elements. Fred Normandale Fred is a founding member and former Chairman of National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations

Road Race circuit once again plays host to another action packed programme for 2015.

29/01/2015

The first meeting of the season is the Spring National in April. This will be used by many riders and sponsors to try out their machinery for the Isle of Man TT. It is also a great opportunity to qualify for their mountain licence. Ace rider and now TV presenter Guy Martin, riding for the German BMW manufacturer, is anxious to build his own 600cc machine, which he will also be testing at Scarborough. Car and Bike enthusiasts are well catered for with the Hill Climb events, which take place on 2nd and 3rd May and 16th August. The event more aimed at families is the Barry Sheene festival on Sat 20th and Sun 21st June. One of the judges for the Saturday is the multi world champion Jim Redman who will be coming from South Africa. July sees the annual Cock O’ the North meeting aimed at the Continental visitors as it just falls at the right time for their holiday period. Rounding off the season will be the Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup Races – already advanced tickets are well over half sold so if you intend visiting please visit our website for information on ticket sales. www.oliversmountracing.com or www.auto66.com
