“Hold on to your seat, Harry! We are getting ready to land at the airport in Cusco, Peru. The airport is located in a valley, surrounded by mountains, so we are going to land quickly.”
Wheeee!!! Bella squealed with delight as the plane made a quick landing. “That was fun! Just like a roller coaster ride, wasn’t it, Harry?”

“Wow! Harry, look around! We are in the central portion of the Andes Mountains. The three mountain ranges we can see from here are the Vilcabamba, Urubamba, and the Vilcanota ranges.�

The Vilcanota range is often
called the Sacred Mountain range.
The Inca Indians, a local Indian tribe, gave the mountain range this name because of their love for the land. The Inca Indians of Cusco spoke a
language called Quechua. Even though Spanish is now the official language of Peru, many of the Incans in this area still speak Quechua. Machu Picchu means “old peak�
in the Quechua language.

Indian tribes settled, lived, and loved the land
long before pups like us stopped by for a visit.”

Let’s take a look at
our map before we leave for Machu Picchu. We are in
Cusco, Peru. Peru is located in
South America and is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil,

Chile, and Bolivia.
We are going to travel by train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. Once we arrive
in Aguas Calientes, we will
take a bus to Machu Picchu and start exploring!
