nowledge is power when it comes to staying healthy. It’s all about lowering the risk of disease. But which diseases cause women the most problems? They might not be what you think. Here are the top five causes of death for women in the United States as compiled by the Mayo Clinic. ❋ NO. 1: HEART DISEASE It’s true. Many women think breast cancer is the top threat to their health. But heart disease causes more deaths in women than all forms of cancer combined. ❋ NO. 2: CANCER It’s breast cancer, right? Wrong.

According to the American Cancer Society, the most common cause of cancer death in U.S. women is lung cancer. Nearly 66,000 women in the United States died of lung cancer in 2002. Breast cancer is second

(40,000 deaths) and colorectal cancer is third (28,000). ❋ NO. 3: STROKE Almost two-thirds of the 167,000 people in the United States who die of stroke each year are women. ❋ NO. 4: CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) COPD comprises a group of chronic lung conditions, including bronchitis and emphysema.

About 62,000 women die of COPD each year. ❋ NO. 5: DIABETES Diabetes claimed the lives of almost 69,000 people in the United States in 2000. More than half of them were women.

Use this knowledge to go over your risk factors for these diseases with your doctor.

Getting healthier isn’t as hard as it sounds. You can get there with four simple steps.

1. Eat right. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain breads and cereals. Skip fried and fast foods.

2. Exercise more. Be active every day. Walk more, take the stairs and turn chores into exercise.

3. Keep your weight down. Start by losing five pounds if you’re too heavy.

Steps 1 and 2 will help with this.

4. Quit smoking. Don’t try to quit alone. Join a support group.

ladies, there are some things you just can’t put off any longer—like the four recommended screenings that could save your life

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ When was the last time you stopped to think about getting screened for cancer? No doubt you’ve got other priorities in your busy life. But the fact is that being screened for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers could save your life— and allow you to stay as busy as you like.

Here is a quick guide to the screenings a woman needs to stay well:

CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING How: The Pap test and pelvic exam. During a pelvic exam, the doctor feels for abnormalities in the size and shape of the uterus, ovaries, etc.

A sample of cells from the cervix is taken during the Pap test to check for unusual changes.

Who: All women beginning three years after first sexual intercourse, but no later than age 21.

When: Every year to age 30, then every two to three years if past Pap tests were normal.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING

Who: All women beginning at age 40. Women at high risk should begin screening earlier as recommended by a physician. Ask your doctor about your risk factors.

When: Every year.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING How: Clinical breast exam. A physical examination of the breasts by a physician to feel for lumps or other abnormalities.

Who: All women beginning at age 20.

When: Every three years during your 20s and 30s; every year beginning at age 40.

COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING How: Fecal occult blood test (FOBT), flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. The FOBT is a lab test to detect blood in the stool. Sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy use a tiny camera to view the inside of the colon. Colonoscopy offers a longer view and enables physicians to remove polyps before they become cancerous.

Who: All women—and men, too. The American Cancer Society advises everyone at normal risk to start getting tested regularly at age 50.

When: Fecal occult blood test every year and sigmoidoscopy every five years or colonoscopy every 10 years. Discuss the screening options with your physician.

HPV testing: who needs it?

Experts have discovered that a common sexually transmitted disease called human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. Although many women have some form of HPV during their lives, only rarely does it actually trigger cancer. The test for HPV can be done at the same time as a Pap test. How: Mammogram. A mammogram is a special X-ray of the breast tissue. It’s currently the most reliable way to detect cancer while it is still in its early stages and easier to treat.

It’s a special time for a woman when she discovers she is pregnant. Feelings of joy, happiness and excitement are sometimes mixed with a little fear and uncertainty. But there is one thing for certain that women need to know and understand: Pregnancy is a serious matter and should be treated accordingly.

Exercise, good nutrition and prenatal care are the keys to a healthy pregnancy. Although no one can guarantee that every woman who follows that advice will have a problemfree pregnancy, it’s in your best interest to take care of yourself so that you are doing your part to have a healthy baby.

When it comes to medical care and pregnancy, the earlier you start getting help, the better off you and your baby will be.

Dating the pregnancy is one of the most important things in beginning good prenatal care so that your physician can get an estimate of the due date. This gives the best chance to identify factors in the mother’s health that can affect her or the baby.

❋ a developmental deal The obstetricians who treat and admit patients at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital suggest that a woman make an appointment as soon as she discovers she’s pregnant so that she can schedule her prenatal checkups, usually on a monthly basis, and begin to change lifestyle habits that could bring harm to the fetus.

They also recommend mothers-to-be eat a well-balanced diet, which includes a vitamin supplement that contains folic acid. An expectant mom’s daily intake of folic acid should be at least 400 micrograms.

Because everything a woman takes into her body, whether through her environment or diet, affects the developing baby, pregnant women should take certain precautions such as: Drink up. Be sure to get plenty of fluids.

Wear gloves when using cleaning products.

Skip the nail salon. Be cautious about how many times you have your nails done because repeated exposure to acetone vapors can be harmful.

Don’t consume alcoholic beverages. Alcohol consumption is linked to birth defects.

Don’t smoke. The negative effects of tobacco on an unborn fetus are well documented.

Limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine has been shown to increase the chance of miscarriage.

❋ get fit and happy Happy one day, sad the next and then happy again, pregnant women experience a roller-coaster ride of emotions. One way to deal with the blues and emotional ups and downs is exercise.

Exercise is important for pregnant women because it tends to make them feel better and helps prepare them for the rigors of childbirth. After all, a woman can’t be too fit for the workout she will endure when she goes into labor. Exercise is also a good way to improve a woman’s cardiovascular tone.

Swimming, for example, is excellent because it offers a lowimpact cardiovascular workout.

It is suggested that women engage in aerobic activity that increases the heart rate to between 120 and 140 beats per minute for at least 20 minutes, three days a week. Using a treadmill or stationary bike is an ideal method for enhancing cardiovascular fitness during pregnancy. Experts advise against inline skating or bicycling. (Always check with

your doctor before beginning any exercise program when you are pregnant.)

It’s normal to be a little anxious when you discover you are expecting. Remember, you can help your delivery be as safe and healthy as possible by following a prenatal plan of action.

Good nutrition is a crucial step in having a healthy baby. A pregnancy takes about 300 extra calories a day to maintain, and an average-sized woman can expect to gain between 25 and 35 pounds. Just remember to eat foods in moderation, and use some common sense when putting portions on your plate.

It is recommended that a pregnant woman should increase her daily food portions to include: Breads and other whole grains: At least six to 12 servings; include brown rice and whole-wheat bread or pasta.

Vegetables: At least three to five servings; include green leafy and yellow vegetables.

Fruits: At least two to four servings; include oranges, grapes and bananas.

Milk and milk products: At least four to six servings; include cheese as often as possible.

Meat and protein foods: At least three to four servings; include red meats and fish.

Water: At least six to eight glasses each day.

WHEN YOU WERE IN YOUR TEENS AND YOUR 20s—even your 30s—you may have felt invincible. You ran and jumped with ease, and you never thought twice before stepping off a curb.

And stairs—you probably took them two at a time.

Nowadays, it might be a different story. Your joints crack with the smallest movements, and your knees ache after a long walk with the dog. And the stairs—you get tired just looking at them.

After decades of use, your joints might be telling you they need a break. In fact, baby boomers are now at prime risk for arthritis. Surprisingly, more than half of those affected by the condition are younger than 65. Although you can’t stop the beat of time, you can help your body slow its impact.

Exercise is important for building stronger muscles and ligaments to support your joints, but also helps fight fatigue and improve your attitude. To relieve pressure and better protect your joints, try low-impact activities such as walking, warm-water exercise and yoga.

Shed the extra pounds. Every extra pound you gain puts four times the stress on your knees. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 66 percent of adults with doctor-diagnosed arthritis are overweight or obese.

On-the-job time counts. If you work with a computer, mind your posture and make sure your monitor and keyboard are properly placed. For jobs with heavy lifting, adjust your techniques and use your largest and strongest muscles, namely your legs.

Dig in to dairy. Snack on your favorite source of calcium.

Along with milk, don’t be afraid to branch out to other dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, as well. Other good sources of calcium include broccoli, salmon and kale.

See your doctor if you experience stiffness, pain or swelling in your joints or heat and redness around your joints lasting longer than two weeks. These symptoms are signs of arthritis.

Did you have a glass of orange juice this morning? If so, you did your body a favor for a surprising reason: Brightly colored fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, may help you avoid rheumatoid arthritis.

The key is in those amazing antioxidants. This particular one is called beta-cryptoxanthin—a carotenoid that creates the deep orange and yellow colors in plant foods. A recent study suggests that cryptoxanthin can reduce inflammation in the body, and that can mean a much lower risk of developing arthritis.

A daily glass of orange juice can give you enough of these protective compounds. Other colorful foods such as bell peppers, papayas and pumpkins offer similar benefits.

So Ingber, 47, began cholesterol screenings in her late 20s with Elizabeth Ross, M.D., a cardiologist and spokeswoman for the American Heart Association (AHA), because she knew it would be criminal not to catch one of the main contributors to heart disease—high cholesterol.

Ross has been monitoring Ingber for 20 years and now screens her cholesterol numbers twice annually.

“Having confidence in your physician is important,” Ingber says. “She’s helped me develop lifestyle habits to keep my cholesterol numbers in a healthy range.”

k the big three Learning about cholesterol is the first step to becoming heart-healthy. The fatty substance, found in your blood, is actually necessary for cell formation and hormone regulation. But too much of it can increase your risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack, according to the AHA. To maintain healthy cholesterol levels, the AHA says you have to “know your numbers.”

But what does that mean? “It’s important for

patients to check blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, because they are the three major risk factors that can be improved and will decrease the risk of future heart disease,” Ross says.

Your total cholesterol level is composed of three parts: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL). This is the “bad” cholesterol. When too much of it circulates in the blood, it starts to clog arteries and can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL). This is the “good” stuff; high levels of it protect against heart disease. HDL carries cholesterol away from your arteries and to your liver, where it is removed from your body.

Triglycerides. A type of fat found in your blood, triglycerides in normal amounts are OK. But a high level increases your

Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are the three major risk factors of heart disease, says Elizabeth Ross, M.D., of the American Heart Association (AHA). Healthy and risky cholesterol counts are included in this AHA chart. Keep in mind, these numbers simply provide a guideline. If you have a strong family history of heart disease, your physician may suggest that cholesterol screenings start in childhood. In general, though, the AHA recommends that everyone older than 20 have what’s called a “fasting lipoprotein profile” every five years. Although it sounds complicated, it’s a simple blood test that you take after not eating for about 12 hours.

Although many communities offer this important screening as a service, Ross encourages you to see your regular physician so he or she can monitor your heart-health history.

In addition to regular screenings, there are other effective ways to ensure healthy cholesterol levels: WATCH YOUR WEIGHT. “We know that if someone is overweight and they lose weight, their bad cholesterol will come down,” Ross says.

GET MOVING. Studies have shown that as little as 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise a day can help lower bad cholesterol and boost the good stuff while also helping your heart work more efficiently.

QUIT THE STICKS. “As soon as you stop smoking, your good cholesterol levels will go up,” Ross says.

EAT LESS FATTY (read: cholesterol-heavy) foods.

Because cholesterol is produced naturally in your body, you should consume fewer than 300 milligrams per day from food, according to the AHA. Things like doughnuts, chips and french fries, which contain saturated or trans fats, are especially unhealthy. Avoid them whenever possible.

by amy lynn smith magine a long line of dominos, standing tall. Now give the first one a teensy nudge. Click, click, click, click, click, click, click—they all tumble.

That’s diabetes when left unchecked.

“Diabetes isn’t a single disease,” says Ann Albright, Ph.D., R.D., president of Health Care & Education for the American Diabetes Association. It starts in the pancreas, she explains, a vital organ that, among other things, regulates insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that helps cells process and store blood sugar (or glucose) for energy—and your body needs a precise amount. People with diabetes have trouble regulating the hormone, and that can lead to wide variety of health complications.

Type 2 diabetes in particular, the most common form of this disease, is linked to a variety of serious conditions, six of which we’ve highlighted here. Fortunately, it’s manageable. If you eat sensibly, exercise, maintain a healthy weight and take medications regularly, you can control diabetes. And by controlling it, you minimize the risk of your own diabetes domino effect.

❋ heart disease It’s common for people with diabetes to also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol—both of which are significant risk factors for heart disease, says Albright. Diet and exercise are the first line of defense against these risk factors, and, for some people, medication is necessary, too.

❋ kidney disease Over time, high levels of blood sugar can make the kidneys work too hard and lead to kidney disease, according to the American Diabetes Association. Regular kidney function tests are extremely important, because kidney disease can be treated when it’s detected early.

❋ eye problems People with diabetes are more likely to develop glaucoma and cataracts. They’re also at risk for diabetic retinopathy, which is caused by blocked or damaged blood vessels. All these eye conditions can become serious, but they’re treatable when found in their early stages, making regular eye exams crucial.

❋ erectile dysfunction Many men with diabetes can develop erectile dysfunction (ED), or impotence, when poorly controlled diabetes damages blood vessels and nerves in the penis. “Sugar-coated blood travels through the body and damages the blood vessels that feed the organs,” says Albright. Fortunately, many treatments are available for ED.

❋ dental health issues High glucose levels in saliva help bacteria grow. The bacteria attacks tooth enamel, causing decay and contributing to gum disease. Daily brushing and flossing and regular visits to the dentist can keep oral health problems at bay.

❋ unhealthy body weight When a person is overweight, the pancreas struggles with insulin balance. The result? A higher risk of type 2 diabetes. And an unhealthy body weight can make diabetes much harder to manage, says Albright. Obesity also increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke and arthritis, among other diseases.

—and surprising— statistic recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: The number of women getting mammograms is decreasing.

Although the decline sounds small— a drop of 1.8 percentage points between 2000 and 2005—it translates to 1.1 million fewer women choosing to get this potentially lifesaving test.

“We don’t know if this is a continual decrease, but it was significant enough that we really need to pay attention to it,” says Jackie Miller, M.D., medical officer with the CDC, division of cancer prevention and control.

More than 40,000 women die from breast cancer every year, and it remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers. But getting regular mammograms has been shown to reduce the mortality rate of breast cancer by 20 to 35 percent in women ages 40 to 69.

Now CDC researchers, including Miller, are focusing their attention on why fewer women are making their annual mammogram appointments.

Here, she identifies three common reasons, and provides advice for turning this trend around.

Scary fact No. 2—not only are fewer women getting mammograms, but the ones who aren’t should know better.

“We found the women who were of a higher education level were the ones with the decreasing number of mammograms,” Miller says. “We have a concern that they’re getting complacent, feeling too safe.”

It’s true that new medications, new treatment options, and more advanced technology to detect and fight breast cancer are making the news as much as, if not more than, mortality rates do.

Miller says she worries this is giving women a sense of false hope that breast cancer isn’t as much of a threat as it once was.

But, Miller adds, regardless of the options women now have to fight the disease, early detection remains the most important weapon—and the earlier, the better.

the ‘ouch’ factor

Another possible deterrent— discomfort—could factor into why women don’t return for their annual mammogram.

At least one study recently showed that reducing the discomfort women expect to feel during the procedure was a motivator to return.

The study out of St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute in Boise, Idaho, tested an over-the-counter anesthetic called lidocaine gel to reduce the pain some women feel during mammograms.

“We set out to determine if either Tylenol, Advil or lidocaine, alone or in combination, would have any impact on women [who were] expecting discomfort,” says Colleen Lambertz, the study’s main author and a nurse practitioner at the institute. In the study of 418 women, it was found that Tylenol and Advil had no effect while lidocaine significantly reduced discomfort.

“It’s primarily used for dermatology procedures, like laser hair removal, to numb the skin,” Lambertz says. But when applied to the breasts an hour before a mammogram, some women found it did wonders. “I had several [participants] call me afterwards with similar comments. It was the first time they’d had a mammogram with no pain,” she adds.

While using lidocaine gel in conjunction with mammograms is new, other options to ease discomfort have been in place for a while. The MammoPad, approved by the FDA in 2001, is a squishy, white, one-time-use foam pad that is invisible to X-rays. Soft and warm, the pad has had remarkable results for women who have used it as a buffer between breast and metal plate.

your mammogram during the first week after your menstrual cycle when breast tenderness should be at its lowest. Also, avoid caffeine the week before your mammogram as it may increase breast tenderness.

No matter what methods you use to help you through it, the few minutes a mammogram lasts is worth what it can do to help save your life, notes Miller.

rising gas prices play a part

Believe it or not, gas prices might inadvertently be affecting the mammogram rate.

“Nationwide, we saw a 6 percent decrease in mammograms from 2004 to 2005 in areas that were rural, areas of poverty,” Miller says. “When we have gas prices through the roof, women have to make cuts somewhere.”

located for everyone. “Some women aren’t going to travel over an hour to get a mammogram, especially if they have children,” she says.

Fortunately, a trend toward mobile mammography in rural areas is taking off. Furnishing the same high-quality mammograms as in doctors’ offices, the self-contained mobile units can travel practically anywhere to perform tests on-site.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that using mobile units helped increase mammography rates by 15 percent among low-income elderly women and 50 percent among some minority populations.

FALSE. Breast cancer can occur at any age. To age 39, one woman in 231 will get breast cancer (less than a 5 percent risk); from ages 40 to 59, the risk is 4 percent; from ages 60 to 79, the risk is one in 15 women, or nearly 7 percent.

Myth: Using antiperspirants causes breast cancer.

FALSE. “I’ve never seen any evidence to show this,” says Debra Pollak, executive director of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s and Washington Adventist Hospital’s cancer care services. Neither the active ingredient in antiperspirants nor a reduction in underarm perspiration has been shown to affect breast cancer risk.

• Sleeping soundly Your pediatrician advised laying babies tummy-down in the crib or on their side. Since 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended only one safe sleeping position for infants: on their backs. The academy says that since babies sleeping on their sides are more likely to accidentally roll onto their stomachs, increasing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, the side position is not as safe as the back and is not recommended.

• Cradle and all Those adorable crib accoutrements are now no-nos. “The only thing that goes in the crib is a mattress, fitted sheet and the baby,” Cianflone advises. “That means no toys, pillows, extra sheets or blankets. Every potential suffocation hazard must be removed.”

Even a crib bumper is under debate, Cianflone adds, but for now the advice is to make it taut and remove it once the baby stands, so it doesn’t become a “step” to climb out of the crib.

• MOVING MEDS Your medicine cabinet once held little more than aspirin, but now, thanks to modern medicine, you probably have several pill bottles. This means taking extra precautions.

Holtzman recommends storing drugs in a locked closet and flushing expired medication down the toilet. “One-third of all pediatric poisoning traces back to a grandparent’s medication,” she says, “so you really need to be careful.”

Another big change concerns Ipecac syrup. The American Association of Poison Control no longer recommends keeping it in the house, and in case of poisoning, call the Poison Control Hotline, 800-222-1222.

• CHOKING HAZARDS You probably have toddler toys and furniture in the attic, and Cianflone urges grandparents to keep them there. Everything a little one sits or sleeps in has recently undergone rigorous safety upgrades. As for playtime, Cianflone warns, “older toys weren’t subject to today’s lead paint and choking hazard regulations.”

5 YEARS AND OLDER For grandkids 5 years and older, the big news is all about outdoor safety.

• SUPERVISING PLAYTIME Along with the baby boomers came the suburbs—quiet communities where children played freely. “Back in the day, that was fine, but it’s not OK now,” Cianflone says. “You need to actively supervise grandchildren under 12, and anyone under 10 should not cross the street by themselves. They can’t appreciate yet how fast a car is moving or how close it is.”

Geriatrics: When taking aspirin with PLAVIX the risk of serious bleeding increases with age in patients 65 and over.

WHO IS PLAVIX FOR? PLAVIX is a prescription-only medicine that helps keep blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots.

PLAVIX is for patients who have: • had a recent heart attack.

• had a recent stroke.

• poor circulation in their legs (Peripheral Artery Disease).

PLAVIX in combination with aspirin is for patients hospitalized with: • heart-related chest pain (unstable angina).

• heart attack.

Doctors may refer to these conditions as ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome).

Clots can become dangerous when they form inside your arteries.

Before taking PLAVIX, tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or are breast feeding or have any of the following: • gastrointestinal ulcer • stomach ulcer(s) • liver problems • kidney problems • a history of bleeding conditions WHAT IMPORTANT INFORMATION SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT PLAVIX? TTP: A very serious blood condition called TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura) has been rarely reported in people taking PLAVIX. TTP is a potentially life-threatening condition that involves low blood platelet and red blood cell levels, and requires urgent referral to a specialist for prompt treatment once a diagnosis is suspected. Warning signs of TTP may include fever, unexplained confusion or weakness (due to a low blood count, what doctors call anemia). To make an accurate diagnosis, your doctor will need to order blood tests. TTP has been reported rarely, sometimes in less than 2 weeks after starting therapy.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding: There is a potential risk of gastrointestinal (stomach and intestine) bleeding when taking PLAVIX. PLAVIX should be used with caution in patients who have lesions that may bleed (such as ulcers), along with patients who take drugs that cause such lesions.

Stroke Patients: If you have had a recent TIA (also known as a mini-stroke) or stroke taking aspirin with PLAVIX has not been shown to be more effective than taking PLAVIX alone, but taking aspirin with PLAVIX has been shown to increase the risk of bleeding compared to taking PLAVIX alone.

Surgery: Inform doctors and dentists well in advance of any surgery that you are taking PLAVIX so they can help you decide whether or not to discontinue your PLAVIX treatment prior to surgery.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT TAKING OTHER MEDICINES WITH PLAVIX? You should only take aspirin with PLAVIX when directed to do so by your doctor. Certain other medicines should not be taken with PLAVIX. Be sure to tell your doctor about all of your current medications, especially if you are taking the following: • aspirin • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) • warfarin • heparin Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking PLAVIX before starting any new medication.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF PLAVIX? The most common side effects of PLAVIX include gastrointestinal events (bleeding, abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea, and nausea) and rash. This is not a complete list of side effects associated with PLAVIX. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a complete list.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE PLAVIX? Only take PLAVIX exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change your dose or stop taking PLAVIX without talking to your doctor first.

PLAVIX should be taken around the same time every day, and it can be taken with or without food. If you miss a day, do not double up on your medication. Just continue your usual dose. If you have any questions about taking your medications, please consult your doctor.

OVERDOSAGE As with any prescription medicine, it is possible to overdose on PLAVIX. If you think you may have overdosed, immediately call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest emergency room.

“When you’re 16, you think 28 is so old!

And then you get to 28 and it’s fabulous. You think, then, what about 42? Ugh! And then 42 is great. As you reach each age, you gain the understanding and experience you need to deal with it and enjoy it,” she added in an interview with All Headline News.

easing up on yourself So, with age comes a certain perspective. “The wonderful thing about getting older is that you chill about things, things that used to torture you … don’t torture you anymore,” Mirren told The Independent. And that, she says, offers you a confidence not appreciated when you’re in your 20s.

According to Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., coauthor of You: Staying Young (Free Press, 2007), that type of confidence can reinforce the notion that people can be vital at any age.

“Our definition of healthy aging has been defined by whether you look like you’re 20,” he says. “And the reality is most people should think ‘I look good for my age,’ which is a more rational approach.”

That means people need to focus on healthy living to ensure vitality as they get older. And it’s never too early to start.

Older Americans underestimate the value of medical tests, says Judy Lichty, Adventist HealthCare’s regional director for health and wellness. “Baseline tests are needed not so you can schedule your next surgery,” she says, “but rather so your doctors have a baseline number they can use if you get sick in the future. We all have different ‘normal’ values—just like we all have different shoe sizes. So learn what is normal for you and save yourself a lot of unnecessary testing [if] you do get sick.”

Here are tests to work into regular rotation: EYE EXAM. The chance of vision-related diseases increases as one ages. Get an eye exam every one to two years.

RECTAL EXAM. It can provide clues to colon problems. Schedule one annually after age 50.

SKIN CHECKS. Have a comprehensive examination of your skin for signs of skin cancer once a year.

FASTING BLOOD SUGAR TEST. Can determine if diabetes is a threat. The American Diabetes Association recommends screenings for people 45 or older.

FOR MEN (AFTER AGE 50; 45 FOR BLACKS). PSA-prostate exam.

When coupled with a rectal exam, this blood test can detect prostate cancer in men.

FOR WOMEN (AFTER AGE 50). Thyroid hormone test. Aging can cause the thyroid to go out of whack, resulting in a number of maladies.

fresh perspective First, Oz thinks Americans need to change their overall perception of aging. “The number-one myth is people think that avoiding disease is the same thing as avoiding aging,” he says. “The real enemy is not cancer or heart disease … it’s frailty.”

keys to healthy aging Oz’s recommendation? A focus on one certain vitamin, diet, exercise and passion.

First up: a dose of D. “Eighty percent of people living in northern cities are deficient in vitamin D,” Oz says, “because they don’t get enough sun exposure. Vitamin D is the numberone tool to prevent cancer. … It’s extraordinarily important in immune function. Ten or 15 minutes of sun exposure in good light gives you about 10,000 units of vitamin D.”

Next: diet. Oz says people should focus on naturally occurring antioxidants in foods to slow aging effects, as well as fight cancer and other oxidation-based damage to bodily functions.

“The most important antioxidants are the ones found in colorful foods,” he says. “They include citrus fruits, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, peppers, leafy green vegetables.”

Oz also recommends daily, vigorous exercise as another important element in aging healthfully. “I’m talking about something that has a weight-bearing element to it,” he says. “The reason that’s important—it gives the right combination of actions that allows you to maintain muscle strength.”

He thinks walking is ideal. “If you can’t walk a quarter mile in five minutes, your chance of living over the next three years is significantly less than someone who can,” he says. Start with half an hour per day.

Oz also singles out yoga as an aging-friendly pursuit, because it uses a person’s own weight as a form of resistance and helps to hone balance.

Finally, aging gracefully requires passion, as in: a great attitude about aging—as evident in Mirren’s nonchalance about age lines and the like.

“It’s not just a matter of living longer; you have to live better,” Oz says. “It’s not a matter of living to age 90—which I think most people should be able to do if they’re in reasonable shape—but [people] have to feel good while they’re doing that.

“If you ask an 85-year-old who looks like a million bucks why they do the physical things they do, [they’ll say] it’s because they like how it makes them feel,” Oz says. “They’re not doing it to live longer—that’s a side benefit of their actions.”

So, find what you like to do. Go biking. Or hiking. Or bowling or dancing or rowing. Or perhaps you can swim in a fire-engine-red bikini in the Mediterranean Sea, trailed by a phalanx of paparazzi.

A place where you can be yourself—you can drink straight from the orange juice carton, invoke the five-second rule when food drops on the floor and sneeze without politely covering your mouth. But should you engage in such risky behavior and subject your family to the consequences?

“We are exposed to millions of germs a day,” says Charles Gerba, Ph.D., a professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona and a member of the American Academy of Microbiology. “It’s always a gamble. You never know when you’re going to touch the wrong thing at the wrong time.”

While germs seem to lurk in every nook and cranny, they thrive on specific hot spots. But have no fear—following our advice will help keep these germs from making you sick.

laundry

You throw a load of laundry into the washing machine and then head out to run errands. You come back three hours later and throw your clean clothes in the dryer. But wait— they aren’t clean anymore! “Bacteria thrives in warm, moist places like the washing machine,” says Thomas Weida, M.D., who serves on the American Academy of Family Physicians board of directors.

“Be sure to dry your clothes quickly to avoid bacteria formation.”

Weida also recommends washing whites in hot water, using bleach, to kill the most bacteria. “Wash underwear separately from the rest of your clothes,” he says. “Every pair of underwear contains about a gram of feces, and you don’t want this transferring to other clothes.” vim & vigor · s p ri ng 2009

The best friend a germ ever had are your fingers, Gerba says. “The average adult puts his hands to his nose, mouth or eyes 18 times per hour,” he says. “And kids, who are more intimate with their environments, do it 30 to 50 times per hour.” Touching your face increases your risk for spreading germs that can make you ill.

And it doesn’t help that people are exposed to more germs now than ever. “People spend more time indoors, sharing space with more and more people,” Gerba explains. “Shopping malls, cruise ships, we import more foods and travel more frequently.” This extra germ exposure results in more germs concentrated in more places.

It may sound simple, but washing your hands or using a sanitizing gel when soap and water aren’t available is an easy solution to stop the spread of germs.

Why are inspectors so vigilant about visiting restaurants to check for health code violations? Because an unclean kitchen is the quickest way to make a lot of people sick. A lot can go wrong in a kitchen—the crosscontamination of raw and cooked foods, meats not being cooked thoroughly, and improperly refrigerated items spoiling.

Gerba cites the kitchen as the germiest spot in the house. Why? He estimates that 30 percent to 100 percent of meat contains salmonella or campylobacter—bacteria that cause food-borne illness. This means that hands must be washed after handling these foods, and surfaces they touched must be disinfected. Weida suggests using bleach and water to disinfect all surface areas, including the sink, countertops and cutting boards.

Sharing is the skill you were forced to learn as a little kid, because it’s the right thing to do. But is sharing really as nice as it seems, or would you be better off playing by yourself in the corner?

The phone, computer keyboard, TV remote control and video game controls—these are just some of the items your entire family shares.

And that means multiple sets of germ-laden hands are touching them.

Weida explains that passing these items from one family member to the next spreads germs, such as Staphylococcus aureus, which frequently live on the skin or in the nose. “Wipe these items down with a disinfectant wipe once or twice a week,” he suggests. “And during cold season, do this even more frequently.”

• If you miss a dose of ADVAIR DISKUS, just skip that dose. Take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take 2 doses at one time.

• Do not use a spacer device with ADVAIR DISKUS. • Do not breathe into ADVAIR DISKUS. • While you are using ADVAIR DISKUS twice a day, do not use other medicines that contain a LABA for any reason. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if any of your other medicines are LABA medicines.

• Do not change or stop any of your medicines used to control or treat your breathing problems. Your healthcare provider will adjust your medicines as needed.

• Make sure you always have a fast-acting inhaler with you. Use your fast-acting inhaler if you have breathing problems between doses of ADVAIR DISKUS.

Call your healthcare provider or get medical care right away if: • your breathing problems worsen with ADVAIR DISKUS • you need to use your fast-acting inhaler more often than usual • your fast-acting inhaler does not work as well for you at relieving symptoms • you need to use 4 or more inhalations of your fast-acting inhaler for 2 or more days in a row • you use 1 whole canister of your fast-acting inhaler in 8 weeks’ time • your peak flow meter results decrease. What is ADVAIR DISKUS? • ADVAIR DISKUS contains 2 medicines: - fluticasone propionate (the same medicine found in FLOVENT®), an inhaled corticosteroid medicine. Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease inflammation in the lungs.

Inflammation in the lungs can lead to asthma symptoms.

- salmeterol (the same medicine found in SEREVENT®), a LABA. LABA medicines are used in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

LABA medicines help the muscles around the airways in your lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your breathing and cause death if not treated right away.

In an effort to keep you from finding a mess on the kitchen floor, your son cleaned up his spilled soda with your kitchen sponge. Your husband used that same sponge to wash down the cutting board after preparing a chicken dinner. And unknown to you, you’re now using that sponge to wash pots and pans.

“Sponges, rags and mops simply move germs around,” Gerba says.

“Bacteria grows in these warm, moist objects. In fact, studies show that bachelors have the cleanest homes—maybe not the neatest homes— because they don’t clean. They aren’t moving germs around from one area to another.”

No, this is not an excuse to stop cleaning. Instead, try switching to disinfectant wipes that can be thrown away after each use, using mop heads that can be thrown in the washing machine for easy cleaning, and putting your sponge in with a dishwasher load to kill germs.

Your grandmother knew best. When she told you to wash your hands before dinner, she was doing the whole family a favor.

Hand washing is one of the simplest, easiest and most effective ways to prevent getting or passing on many germs, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). But this practice often goes overlooked.

“Good hand-washing practices will reduce your chances of catching the cold or flu by 50 percent,” says Michael Anne Preas, executive director of infection control at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “That said, only one-fifth of the people who wash their hands are doing so adequately.”

The NIAID suggests washing your hands before preparing or eating food, after coughing or sneezing, after using the bathroom and after changing a diaper. To properly wash, scrub your hands for at least 15 seconds (about the time it takes to recite the alphabet) with soap and water.

When soap and water aren’t available, Preas suggests reaching for hand-sanitizer gel. Hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol has proved effective in reducing germs. But it’s still best to use soap and water if your hands are visibly soiled or after using the restroom.

bathtub and toilet You’ve had a long day at work. All you want to do is come home and soak in the tub. But when you’re done, where do you think all those germs you cleaned off your body go? Staphylococcus aureus, bacteria that cause skin infections, thrive in moist, warm areas like your bathtub. “When you’re done with a bath or shower, wipe it down with bleach and then dry it,” Weida says. “Bacteria doesn’t like it dry.”

Another obvious germy bathroom spot is your toilet. “Flushing a toilet causes the germs inside the bowl to become airborne,” Gerba warns.

“The toilet bowl surface, flush handle and floor surrounding the toilet are often contaminated with E. coli.” It’s important to clean these areas with bleach often and to keep items such as your toothbrush as far away as possible. vim & vigor · s p ri ng 2009

WATCH OUT: “As a teen you really have to build a strong skeleton,” says Nicholas DiNubile, M.D., author of Framework—Your 7-Step Program for Healthy Muscles, Bones, and Joints (Rodale Books, 2005). Because of this, teenagers need to focus on healthy eating and drinking habits.

While calcium is essential for strong

bones, only 14 percent of girls and 36 percent of boys get the recommended 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily, according to the USDA. Compounding that problem, today’s teens drink twice as much soda as dairy or calcium-fortified beverages.

Other cautions: Teens can experience arthritis and Osgood-Schlatter disease, an inflammation of the tendon near the kneecap that usually occurs during a major teenage growth spurt.

HEALTHY ADVICE: To build bone mass and joint strength at a young age, kids need to be active, according to DiNubile.

with arthritis lose their normal cushion, making them stiff and painful.

If you experience such pain, it could be a telltale sign of arthritis. See your doctor pronto! healthy advice: “Exercise is the closest thing to a fountain of youth that we have,” says DiNubile. “There are so many tremendous benefits for your body. It doesn’t have to be planned exercise in the gym. Just getting moving is important.”

Eating right is also essential.

According to a report in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, dietary protein—specifically, protein obtained from meat—is a key nutrient for bone health. Also, keep an eye on that coffee habit and those after-work happy hours. Too much caffeine and alcohol can inhibit calcium absorption.

Everyone knows that dairy products are high in calcium. But here are some other foods that will help you build strong, healthy bones, according to the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.

What is BONIVA? BONIVA is a prescription medicine used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause (see “What is osteoporosis?”).

BONIVA may reverse bone loss by stopping more loss of bone and increasing bone mass in most women who take it, even though they won’t be able to see or feel a difference. BONIVA may help lower the chances of breaking bones (fractures).

For BONIVA to treat or prevent osteoporosis, you have to take it as prescribed. BONIVA will not work if you stop taking it.

Who should not take BONIVA? How should I take BONIVA? • Take BONIVA exactly as instructed by your health care provider.

• Take BONIVA first thing in the morning at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before you eat, drink anything other than plain water, or take any other oral medicine.

• Take BONIVA with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 full cup) of plain water. Do not take it with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take it with other drinks, such as mineral water, sparkling water, coffee, tea, dairy drinks (such as milk), or juice.

• Swallow BONIVA whole. Do not chew or suck the tablet or keep it in your mouth to melt or dissolve.

• After taking BONIVA you must wait at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before: - Lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk.

Rarely, patients have reported severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain starting within one day to several months after beginning to take, by mouth, bisphosphonate drugs to treat osteoporosis (thin bones). This group of drugs includes BONIVA. Most patients experienced relief after stopping the drug. Contact your health care provider if you develop these symptoms after starting BONIVA. Rarely, patients taking bisphosphonates have reported serious jaw problems associated with delayed healing and infection, often following dental procedures such as tooth extraction. build. According to Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D., author of Strong Women, Strong Bones (Perigee Trade, 2006), that’s because estrogen production declines during this period and bodies tend to absorb less calcium as they get older.

Couple that with the fact that our skin produces less vitamin D—essential for strong bones and the absorption of calcium—as we age, and the 40s decade can mean a significant shift in bone health.

WATCH OUT: A lot of adults experience common “tight” joint spots, including around the hamstrings, lower back, calves and front of shoulders. So, that hobbling you experience right out of bed in the morning may be a warning sign: Get more calcium! And vitamin K. According to studies cited in the journal Nutrition, vitamin K increases bone mineral density and reduces fracture rates.

HEALTHY ADVICE: With age, you need to spend more time working on flexibility, so start a good daily stretching program. “Regular exercise keeps your body young. Motion is lotion,” DiNubile says. Weight-bearing exercise is also key at this life stage to stimulate bone and muscle growth.

And you may need to take vitamin D and calcium dietary supplements.

That, and the fact that bones lose calcium and other minerals, may cause bones to break more easily. Joints will become stiffer and less flexible, and fluid in the joints may decrease, causing cartilage to rub together and begin to erode.

Calcification (aka mineral deposits) may also build up in joints.

WATCH OUT: Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are common problems for older women. Inflammation, pain, stiffness and deformity may result from a breakdown of the joint structures.

HEALTHY ADVICE: Amp up on nutritious foods. “Avoiding pro-inflammatory processed foods high in sugar and fat and including foods high in antioxidants such as blueberries and green tea is recommended,” says Petrusha.

Lycopene—derived from tomatoes in sauces and the fruit itself—also shows promise in fighting osteoporosis. A study by Leticia Rao, Ph.D., of the University of Toronto showed that lycopene stimulates cells important to bone formation and prevented cells involved in bone absorption from doing their job.

And hit the weights. According to a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, progressive resistance training—resistance in the form of weights or bands—has a direct, positive effect on bone density.

It may sound like the perfect meal: grilled shrimp and angel hair pasta tossed in a delicious cream sauce. And all it takes is four minutes in the microwave.

Ah, but then you peel back the plastic cover and discover— surprise!—it looks nothing like the picture on the box. Not to mention that this miniature impostor packs an obscene number of calories, which leaves you wondering, are prepared frozen meals ever a good idea?

Frozen meals can have a place as part of a healthy diet. You just have to know what to look for—and look out for—when choosing them.

The good news is that there are lots of options. “Manufacturers have more than kept up with providing quick and easy choices,” says John La Puma, M.D., author of ChefMD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine (Crown, 2008). Here, we take a look at five popular frozen foods and tell you whether they’re meal-worthy.

Frozen-food fix: If it’s portability you’re after, go for an egg burrito. Scramble one whole egg, two egg whites, and prechopped peppers and onions. Roll it into a whole-wheat tortilla with low-fat shredded cheese and salsa, and you have a complete breakfast you can eat en route.

While this is under the 800 milligrams La Puma recommends as a max per meal, if you eat more than one pocket or supplement with more food to feel full, you’ll end up ingesting too much sodium for one meal. And if high blood pressure is a concern, you shouldn’t have more than 1,500 milligrams per day.

Frozen-food fix: If it’s pizza you’re craving, make your own with store-bought pizza dough and tomato sauce, topped with shredded cheese and vegetables. Add a side salad for bonus nutrition.

You don’t have to swear off frozen foods. “Some frozen entrees actually can be healthy as the center of your meal,” says Jamie Futterman, registered dietitian at Washington Adventist Hospital.

Just check the label before popping one in the microwave.

Futterman suggests looking for: • Less than 4 grams of saturated fat • No trans fat • More than 15 grams of protein • Less than 800 milligrams of sodium • More than 5 grams of fiber Pick a selection that includes lots of vegetables—for example a stir-fry, a roasted vegetable pizza or a pasta primavera.

Since many of us do not meet our goals for vegetable intake on a daily basis, frozen meals can be used to help make up the difference.

Frozen-food fix: If it’s comfort food you’re after, choose a diet entree of macaroni and cheese and add pregrilled chicken strips and a side of vegetables. Perhaps most importantly, “make sure to eat it on a real plate,” La Puma says. “Then you get a sense of actually having a meal.”
