The Numbers Behind a Healthy Child 1— Make sure your kids get at least one hour of physical activity a day. This can be structured (soccer practice) or unstructured (playing at the park). A combination of both forms is best.

It may be as easy as 5-2-1-0, says Joseph Hsu, M.D., chair of pediatrics at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Here’s what the four numbers represent: 5 — Kids should eat five servings of fruits or vegetables each day, Hsu recommends. The more, the better!

2— Limit “screen time” to two hours or less each day.

As kids get older, too much time with TV, video games or the computer can interfere with physical activity, reading, homework, playing with friends and spending time with family, Hsu says.

Margaret Smith of Gaithersburg is matter-offact about her painful, perilous experience that began in early 2009. The now 17-year-old has moved on from a potentially fatal condition, and is back to playing soccer.

“For her to talk about it today, as if it was no big deal, says a lot about the care she received,” explains her father, Bart.

Margaret’s condition actually began in fall 2008 when a blow to her leg during a soccer game injured a vein. She experienced no symptoms at the time.

Yet, months later, in January 2009, after sitting for several hours during an exam, Margaret suddenly felt excruciating pain and could barely walk.

The next morning, Margaret and her mother went to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s emergency department. There, doctors found a blood clot—called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT—that could fatally travel to Margaret’s brain, lungs or heart if left untreated.

The typical patient is older than 60, but DVT can occur at any age. As in Margaret’s case, half of the approximately 2 million Americans affected do not experience immediate symptoms. Blood clots are often genetic, but injuring a vein, smoking and sitting for long periods increase the risk.

Over the next four days, vascular surgeon Richard Silva, M.D., performed two challenging, state-of-the-art procedures to remove Margaret’s clot, which had grown to a shocking 12 inches in length since her soccer injury.

“The new techniques more effectively remove the clot and keep it from breaking off and embolizing [clotting again],” Silva says. “Vascular specialists are now able to treat a broader range of patients, dramatically improving their ability to return to a normal lifestyle.”

In addition to the latest treatments, Margaret and her family were impressed with the comprehensive way that Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s team met their medical and nonmedical needs.

Margaret’s mother, Barbara, was able to constantly remain by her side, even sleeping at the hospital. “The nurses made me feel at home, and I was so thankful,” Barbara recalls. “I would have gone crazy not being there.”

Anyone who has had a clot is more prone to develop another one in the future.

This fall, Margaret is attending college in South Carolina. She is playing club soccer for the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers.

knew that she would join the 200,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year when she found a lump in her breast during a routine self-exam in May 2008.

“I knew it was cancer immediately,” she recalls.

Wilkins, now 47, a victim advocate for the city of Rockville, learned how to perform a breast self-exam 20 years earlier during a women’s health class at Montgomery College. “My mom died from complications of breast cancer and one aunt had breast cancer,” she says. “Yet my mom never discussed our family history or checking herself.”

After finding the lump, Wilkins remembers feeling shocked at the prospect of facing the illness on her own. She hesitated to share the news with her children or to seek medical care for several weeks. At the time, her son was about to graduate from high school and head off to college; her daughter was busy raising two young children.

Suspicions Wilkins eventually obtained a mammogram that confirmed the first lump. An MRI later identified a second lump. The good news was that the monthly self-exam caught the initial lump in an early stage, called ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. “DCIS is the earliest stage of cancer, also known as noninvasive, because there is no evidence that the cancer cells have broken out of

the duct and ‘invaded’ into the surrounding tissue,” says Cynthia Plate, M.D., a breast surgeon at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. “DCIS is not lifethreatening but indicates a significantly increased risk for invasive cancer, so treatment and close surveillance are imperative.”

gery to remove her left breast at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where she had also undergone bariatric surgery in 2005.

She recalls the compassion and understanding of the surgical nurses, some of whom were breast cancer survivors themselves.

“The nurses at the hospital, in my doctors’ offices and who came to my home cared for me physically as well as psychologically and spiritually,” Wilkins says.

“I could not have made it through my journey without that care. These nurses became a part of my family. They relate to me in a special way.”

Early in her cancer journey, two friends—one of whom is a five-year breast cancer survivor—directed Wilkins to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s cancer care navigator, Sharon Francz. In their unique role, the navigators serve as a resource to cancer patients and their families, even the “worried well,” at no charge to them.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s navigation team, which also includes an oncology-certified, registered dietitian and a social worker, assists patients with whatever they need. “The team facilitates, mobilizes resources and provides support and aid in any way along the journey,” says Debra Pollak, executive director of cancer care services for Adventist HealthCare.

During her first conversation with Francz, Wilkins knew that she had made a connection that would affect her journey. “It was like talking to an old friend,” she says. “You can’t explain the connection. You meet somebody for the first time and you know that you are destined to make a difference in each other’s lives.”

Wilkins quickly joined the breast cancer support group at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Through the group, she connected with other survivors and built a network of support.

“Encouragement and hope come from survivors,” she explains. “We all fight together. That is what it is about—you are not alone.”

“How many wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters will we lose if we tell people to not check themselves?” she says.

“While the guidelines were just that—guidelines, not mandates— they did cause confusion

Wilkins was one of the lucky women who found her cancer early and has been able to fight her way back to health. She offers a simple yet deeply meaningful answer when asked how breast cancer has changed her life.

“I have many scars, but I’m so much more of a beautiful woman inside,” she says. “As much as I have hated to have gone through my battle with breast cancer, it has humbled me and taught me to celebrate each day of my life. I now have peace, I now have joy. I have won the battle.

Expanding Access to Breast Cancer Screening Shady Grove Adventist and Washington Adventist Hospitals participate in a breast cancer screening program that offers screenings, patient education, breast selfexamination instructions and access to treatment for low-income women ages 40 and older living in Montgomery County.

The program is available through a partnership with the Montgomery County Women’s Cancer Control Program and Maryland’s Breast and Cervical Diagnosis and Treatment Program.

Today, Wilkins continues to fight breast cancer and to undergo reconstructive surgery. As she moves through her journey, she

recalls numerous “angels” who helped her deal with her pain, devastation and fear. A radiologist at Shady Grove Radiology who shared the first confirmation of breast cancer; an oncology nurse at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital who hugged her as she wept following her mastectomy; an oncologist who told her that her survival chances were extremely good because of early detection—these “angels” showed her light in her darkest days.

“They were awesome support for me,” Wilkins says. “They stayed with me and sometimes just held my hand and wiped away my many tears.”

An Open Letter

We are writing this letter jointly as community and business leaders in upper Montgomery County to express our enthusiastic support for Adventist HealthCare’s plans to develop a hospital and medical campus in Clarksburg that would serve a fast-growing region from Germantown up to Urbana in southern Frederick County. We believe this is the best proposal for a new hospital in Montgomery County.

Adventist HealthCare has been working for years in a transparent manner with input from the community to develop a comprehensive medical campus. The medical campus proposal is anchored by a hospital but also includes other important health-care services, including a primary care clinic, a day care center and outpatient services.

Located adjacent to the campus are plans for senior housing.

Adventist HealthCare’s carefully developed plans have resulted in a proposal that blends well with existing and future planned development in an environmentally responsible manner, consistent with stringent County and State land use requirements.

To ensure environmental and traffic suitability, major land-use approvals have been received for the campus as part of a large development of residential housing and commercial and retail services. The hospital and medical campus is easily accessible from all directions off of I-270 and will bring significant economic development and jobs to the region.

Finally, Adventist’s proposal complements, rather than conflicts, with existing health-care services in upper Montgomery County, including the Germantown Emergency Center, a facility that has effectively and efficiently improved access to emergency medical care.

Thank you for considering our views in support of the Adventist HealthCare proposal for a new hospital and medical campus in Clarksburg to serve residents in upper Montgomery County and lower Frederick County.
