Ramstein Airmen, Morocco support AFRICOM’s first JPAD-MAGU drop

Ramstein Air Base Airmen load Joint Precision Airdrop Systems with Modular Autonomous Guidance Units bundles onto a C-130J Super Hercules during Exercise African Lion 18, April 18 at Kenitra Air Base, Morocco. Morocco, a major non-NATO ally, supported U.S. Africa Command’s first-ever JPAD-MAGU drop in Northern Morocco.

KENITRA AIR BASE, MOROCCO — Since the introduction of airdrops in World War II, flying at low levels has had its concerns: How do you ensure the accuracy of delivering cargo while also keeping your aircraft and crew safe from hostile ground forces? The answer: A self-navigating cargo load. United States Air Forces in Europe and Africa service members dropped U.S. Africa Command’s first Joint Precision Airdrop System with a Modular Autonomous Guidance Unit, called a JPAD-MAGU for short, during Exercise African Lion 18, April 18, near Kenitra Air Base, Morocco. BERLIN, GERMANY — When board-

ing U.S. aircraft during an air show, it is natural for people to expect a U.S. pilot or crew member to greet them. This wasn’t the case when a group of German school children visited a C-17 Globemaster III during the Berlin Air and Trade Show on April 27. Instead, they were greeted by a German pilot assigned to Joint Base Charleston, S.C., as part of the Military Personnel Exchange program. “They’re so fascinated by the aircraft and helicopters at this air show,” said Maj. Rico Persy, German air force pilot. “It feels good to get the chance See PARTNERSHIP, Page 2

They’re super excited about being here.” Persy added that he is confident the experiences of the children at the air show, such as visiting the aircraft and seeing one of their own countrymen serving with the U.S., will leave a lasting impression on them and perhaps inspire them to serve as well. The 2018 Berlin Air and Trade Show fell under the same year as the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, in which U.S. and allied forces airlifted supplies into West Berlin following a Soviet blockade of the city. The C-17 that Persy commanded during the air show, nicknamed “The Spirit of Berlin,” commemorates the airlift. The Berlin Airlift demonstrated the U.S. commitment to its allies, and signified the reliability of the alliance in desperate times. Persy said that although he serves as a foreign exchange pilot, he feels completely at one with his U.S. teammates. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, and I’m thankful for that,” he said. “I don’t feel like I’m any different or someone special. I’m just like any pilot in the squadron—just like anybody else.”

U.S. Airmen assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron receive a briefing about the A400M Atlas from German air force 1st Lt. Felix, A400M co-pilot, in Berlin April 27. According to aerospace corporation Airbus, there are 58 A400Ms in operation.

Elsewhere during the air show, U.S. Airmen from the 37th Airlift Wing met with their German counterparts from the Air Transport Wing 62, or “Lufttransportgeschwader 62.” The air show gave the two partnership wings the opportunity to socialize

and exchange information about their respective aircraft: the C-130J Super Hercules and A400M Atlas. Capt. Tim Vedra, 37th AS C-130J instructor pilot said that it is important for allies to understand each other’s equipment in order to execute combined missions smoothly. “It’s really cool to see some of the different things the A400M has,” he said. “If we ever flew together in a formation, we would have a better understanding of what they are able to do.” 1st Lt. Felix, an A400M co-pilot, said he was also impressed by the versatility of the C-130J. He expressed desire to see the A400M and C-130J to fly together in a mission. “It is a very good thing to exchange knowledge and experience and learn from each other,” he said. “I think we can do a lot of missions together anywhere in the world very successfully.” Loadmasters from both aircraft also shared their capabilities. Master Sgt. Martin, an A400M

loadmaster, said that while different nations have different aircraft, there are many similarities between the duty descriptions of the aircrew. “Many things are pretty similar with the job we are doing,” he said. “It’s really nice to see that many other guys from different nations are doing the same job, and they know what we are talking about.” Martin added that exchanging ideas between allies can benefit both parties involved. If loadmasters from a certain airframe see crewmembers from a different aircraft use techniques which work for them, the former might be able to incorporate those techniques into their own and vice versa, Martin said. Overall, Martin expressed his enjoyment of being a loadmaster and the connection he feels with his colleagues from other nations. “It’s a fantastic feeling to sit in the aircraft, fly around the world, and do jobs that you couldn’t in the office,” he said. “Our office is the sky.”

86th AES exercises deployment readiness

Airmen with the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron pose for a group photo on Ramstein Air Base April 27. The 86th AES practiced assembling a tent for an exercise in order to train the Airmen in a deployed environment.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Ariel Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron held a readiness training exercise April 27 on Ramstein Air Base. The exercise involved approximately 23 Airmen from the 86th AES assembling and disassembling tents to ensure the Airmen are capable of utilizing them in a deployed environment. “The exercise is meant to get these young fliers used to setting up in a bare base

operation,” said Lt. Col. Penny Cunningham, 86th AES training flight commander. Hands-on setup, care, and staging were skills applied in the training. Participants learned to effectively utilize manpower and care for their tent equipment. “The goal is to teach the Airmen to always be ready, whether it be for the next conflict or deployment,” Cunningham said. The 86th AES practiced a variety of exercises including how to properly off-load deployable equipment off a Humvee as well as setting up

tents and bases in a deployed environment. In June, the 86th AES is slated to send a team to participate in a deployment exercise to keep members trained and allow new members to gain experience. “We have a two-person aeromedical evacuation liaison team that will deploy to an exercise where they will set up their operation and their tents systems, which they used in today’s exercise,” Cunningham said. Cunningham is currently leading the way with innovative ideas in order to ensure 86th AES readiness. Air Force selects locations for B-21 aircraft

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WASHINGTON — The Air Force announced that the B-21 Raider will replace B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit aircraft at three existing bomber bases beginning in the mid-2020s. The Air Force selected Dyess Air Force Base, Texas; Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota; and Whiteman AFB, Missouri, as reasonable alternatives to host the new B-21 aircraft. Using the current bomber bases will minimize operational impact, reduce overhead, maximize re-use of facilities, and minimize cost, Air Force officials said. “Our current bomber bases are best suited for the B-21,” said Secretary of the Air Force Heather A. Wilson. “We expect the first B-21 Raider aircraft to be delivered in the mid2020s.” Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, and Minot AFB, North Dakota, will continue to host the B-52, which is expected to continue conducting operations through 2050. “We are designing the B-21 Raider to replace our aging bombers as a long-range, highly-survivable aircraft

capable of carrying mixed conventional and nuclear payloads, to strike any target worldwide,” said Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein. The Air Force will make its

final B-21 basing decision following compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and other regulatory and planning processes. That decision is expected in 2019. Although the first B-21 are expect-

ed in the mid-2020s, the Air Force doesn’t plan to retire the existing bombers until there are sufficient B-21s to replace them. The Air Force hasn’t determined which location will receive the aircraft first.

DROP from Page 1 (FAR) hosted the exercise’s air space, drop zone and operations center to support the 86th Airlift Wing, 37th Airlift Squadron, 435th Contingency Response Group and 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team to prepare and execute the historic event. For years, satellite navigated cargo loads have been advantageous in cargo drops, however its vulnerability to hacking creates limitations. Furthermore, the self-directed MAGU takes JPADS where GPS often cannot: in blocked, mountainous or high-populated urban locations. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Giovani Gomez, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) parachute rigger, said the benefit of using the JPAD-MAGU is to ensure accuracy and safety in order to get the supplies to personnel. “If we had troops in a bad area and we needed to give them food and water, we can fly above another air space and drop this JPAD to fly its way down to their pin-point location,” Gomez said. “In place of us flying at a lower altitude and dropping the CDS there and it ends up in bad territory, now we just helped the other people rather than our own.” Along with the JPAD-MAGU’s ability to be released from a higher altitude of 24,500 feet, its accuracy condenses ground troops’ travel time due to its smaller drop radius. Prior to the rigging and drops, PAD operators must configure and compute climatology data into a chip inserted into the brain of the system, the MAGU. Through the on-board battery pack, and a GPS-controlled steerable parafoil decelerator, the JPAD-MAGU “will get itself where it needs to go,” said Maj.

Jacob Morton, 37th AS navigator and PADs operator. “What we’re doing is we’re giving it the best possible chance of getting there; we’re doing the work so it doesn’t necessarily need to,” Morton said. Gomez said they’re excited for the JPAD-MAGU drop and hope to continue working with other countries like Morocco. “They might do things differently than how we do them,” Gomez said, “We can learn from them and they can learn from us.” The combined multilateral exercise aims to enhance U.S. and FAR profes-

Spoken word poet, survivor takes on SAPR open named, “Speak.” The duo focused their theme on the transformation from victim to survivor:

George Linen with a relaxed applause. The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron electrical systems supervisor and sexual assault survivor, takes center-stage in front of his leadership and speaks, anger coloring his voice: “I’ve spent hours in the shower trying to wash off your possession from my skin. Trying to justify a claim on a body that isn’t yours and then I can still feel your hands on my wrist...” Quietly, forks from breakfast are put down and all eyes observe Linen. In order to best convey their message, the 86th Airlift Wing Chaplain Corp and Ramstein Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office wanted to leave KMC leaders with a thoughtprovoking performance during the SAPR Leadership Breakfast, April 12 at Ramstein Air Base. Approximately 100 people attended the event as U.S. Army Col. William S. Galbraith, 21st Theatre Sustainment Brigade deputy commanding officer, and Col. Joseph H. Wenkcus, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, joined together to raise awareness about sexual violence. “True leaders understand we work too hard fighting for a free nation to let actions like sexual assault and harassment impede our mission and destroy our most precious assets, our people,” Galbraith said. “I ask you in this room, to lead from the front. Be present in the discussions on sexual assault and harassment prevention methods. Let your zero-tolerance pol-

Our people are the most important part of our mission, Wenckus said, and statistically one out of four women and one out of six men will be affected by sexually assault in their lifetime. In an aim to deliver a powerful performance, Linen paired up with Senior Airman Vanessa Vann, 603rd Air Operations Center knowledge manager, to write the original piece

“So I’m speaking from the ashes, I am fire without matches. I am a change to the culture, And we will starve these vultures. My strength, is their weakness, My Power, from me speaking. I am a 12 round, contender. I remove power, from the offender, and give strength, to the victims. I am a second chance, to life, I am a Survivor. I fight. “Even though we’re writing this poem to hit a spectrum of people this could happen to,” Linen explains, “Some of them are personal stories we put into the poem. So it took a long time to actually write because each session kind of ended emotionally.” Linen, now a victim advocate, stands tall delivering his final lines: “Knowing is half the battle and, We know rape, doesn’t have a face. Sexual assault, doesn’t come in a form of Sexual preference, age, gender, or race. And hey! You don’t ever get to call us victims weak, Because we are survivors, And we get back to the person we once were, Every time, We Speak.” Soldiers, Airmen and civilian atten dees stand up in unison, breaking the silence with a standing ovation.

Galbraith, 21st Theatre Sustainment Brigade deputy commanding officer, speaks during the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Leadership Breakfast at Ramstein Air Base, April 12. The breakfast was held in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month to educate service members on the importance of prevention and mission readiness.

Through all military members and their families’ dedication, KMC leaders hope to open safe dialogues of conversation and enforce the prevention of sexual offenses. “When trying to change that culture of what’s okay to be said — you get a little bit of push-back,” Linen said. “But it’s crazy how just one voice can slowly change an entire atmosphere.” If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, contact the SAPR office at 480-7272 or 0172-821-4871. KENITRA AIR BASE, MOROCCO —

Exercise African Lion 2018 concludes as approximately 900 U.S. service members prepare to redeploy out of the Kingdom of Morocco and Tunisia. The exercise involved various types of training across the Moroccan coastline, including an Aviation Training Exercise supported by Airmen from Ramstein Air Base, and Soldiers from the 5th Quartermaster and the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. “Ensuring familiarity with integration of operations and progressing mutual national interests is key to our worldwide capabilities and their effectiveness,” said Capt. Josh Kelsey, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot and African Lion 2018 deputy mission commander. “We’re working through the mechanics of integrating all of our operations so that if the time comes, we stand united against the threat.” Throughout the two-week performance, service members conducted low-level mountain flying, aeromedical evacuation training, combat offload and on-loads, 81 joint-personnel

drops, 21 low-cost/low-altitude parachute drops, 19 dirt landings, 18 freefall parabundle drops, and 12 emergency aircraft egress landings. The team took on U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa’s first drop of the newly updated Joint Precision Airdrop System using an attached Modular Autonomous Guidance Unit to GPS guide its cargo directly onto its target. Aircrew dropped six bundles from a high altitude and all landed safely within meters of the desired target. This demonstrated the accuracy of the new system and a significant proof of concept for both the Army and the Air Force. Additionally, this was also the first time the 37th AS routinely landed on a freshly surveyed, completely bare, unimproved dirt field. “It just showed the capability of our Wing to start from scratch on a dirt field, survey, determine suitability, and land a C-130J there,” said Capt. Laura K. Martineau, 37th AS pilot and African Lion 2018 mission commander. Additionally, the Atlas Mountains presented the 37th AS pilots with some great low-level performance challenges, Martineau explained. The

higher the pressure altitude, the more difficult it is to climb and crossover ridge lines. “Our training prepares us to ingress into a joint forcible entry-type situation and drop a considerable amount of personnel at once,” Martineau continued. “The Moroccans have also been observing procedures in-flight; it’s been incredible training for everyone involved.” In light of today’s political and security environment, it is more important than ever to collaborate effectively and promote mutual understanding of international security. By working in sync for the past two weeks, the U.S. military and Moroccan Royal Armed Forces strengthened interoperability and further developed tactics, techniques, and procedures of participating nations to counter violent extremist organizations. “When we have competent partners ready to aid in maintaining all of our freedoms, posturing against today’s security threats becomes exponentially easier,” Kelsey said. “It’s about building partnership capacity with cooperative nations.” The U.S. Department of Defense recognizes Morocco’s role as a strong and stable partner in North Africa

First Sergeant continues career after tumor, hearing loss

Master Sgt. Geoffrey VanDyck, 707th Force Support Squadron first sergeant, views an image of the tumor found on his auditory nerve. In May 2005, VanDyck was diagnosed with acoustic neuroma, a noncancerous, normally slow growing tumor that develops on the main vestibular nerve that leads from the inner ear to the brain. FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, MD — More than ten years ago, while stationed in Hawaii, Master Sgt. Geoffrey VanDyck had the constant feeling of water in his ear. He knew something was wrong. Nothing seemed to relieve the feeling, so his medical provider sent him to an ear, nose and throat specialist. After an MRI, the cause of his pain and discomfort was found: a golf ball-sized tumor, an acoustic neuroma. According to the Mayo Clinic, acoustic neuroma is a noncancerous, usually slow-growing tumor that develops on the main vestibular nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. In some cases, it can grow rapidly, pressing against the brain and interfering with vital functions. In VanDyck’s case, radiation was not an option, so surgery had to be performed. The tumor was located close to his spinal cord, so his doctor gave him two choices: have surgery to remove the tumor and have a 1 percent chance of hearing again or let the tumor continue to grow and have a 100 percent chance of becoming a quadriplegic within a year.

“I did the quick math and said OK, let’s lose the hearing,” VanDyck said. At exactly the same time, it was VanDyck’s turn for a permanent change of station. The surgery was scheduled in San Antonio, while he was en route to his next duty station. The timing of the surgery would leave him separated from his family for months, providing him no support network during and after the surgery. “When I was diagnosed, I had orders to Arizona,” said VanDyck. Doctors said he could be flown to San Antonio for the surgery and fly back and forth every other week for followup, but VanDyck knew there had to be another option. That was when he went to his first sergeant in Hawaii for assistance. VanDyck worked through the career field functional manager to get his orders changed to an assignment in San Antonio. There, he could have the surgery and his family would be close by to help him recover. After surgery, VanDyck took four months of convalescent leave for recovery and physical therapy, he said. He lost hearing in his right ear permanently and had to rebalance his body. “Even sitting up was difficult,” he said. “I would get completely sick and turn pale.” VanDyck completed extensive

physical therapy to learn how to walk, sit up and live life independently again. “I didn’t know how amazing the body could be,” he said. Through it all, VanDyck appreciated his first sergeant and the Air Force for allowing his family to be with him. “I honestly don’t know where I would have been if my family was not there,” he said. “For the first month I couldn’t drive, walk, shower or even live independently.” “I have zero directional sound and can’t determine where a sound is coming from,” he said. “My wife and I play a little game where she’ll hide and say my name and I have to guess where she is. What some might find misfortune we are light-hearted about. It’s just another life event.” VanDyck recalled one of the first times going out in public after his surgery. His family had taken him out to dinner at a local restaurant. “The ability to process sound is something we take for granted,” he said. “I have no directionality and I also cannot filter out sound.” At the busy restaurant, so much was going on around him that it became overwhelming and his brain wasn’t able to filter out all the sounds. It was at that point that he broke down, felt the loss of his independence and started lashing out, he said.

One day, when his wife sat him down and confronted him about it, he realized how much he needed his family’s help to recover. With the loss of hearing, there were changes that he had to make in his daily life and things he had to become more aware of. “From where I sit at a table to which side I walk on, whether I’m too close or too far back from someone, I had to take those things into consideration,” he said. Now, more than ten years after the diagnosis, VanDyck is a first sergeant for the 707th Force Support Squadron, and his experiences are giving him an avenue to help Airmen during their time of need. “Since becoming a first sergeant I have expanded my knowledge on various tools and resources, and how those rely on the Air Force Instructions, and what rules we have to take care of people,” said VanDyck. Now, he can use his knowledge and personal experience to help others identify issues and find solutions. “One of the most difficult hurdles to overcome is to admit something was wrong,” VanDyck said. “To Airmen facing personal challenges, the advice I have is, recognize when you are struggling and face the situation head-on. You can’t just ignore a problem. You’re going to have to face it, but you don’t have to do it alone.”

Garrison, Hochspeyer firefighters train for emergencies Story and photos by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz firefighters and Hochspeyer Volunteer Fire Department members participated in a training exercise at Kaiserslautern Army Depot to enhance and coordinate lifesaving efforts for onand off-post communities May 3. Heavy rescue techniques were tested during an evening scenario, as well as mutual-aid support, said Tobias Lang, USAG RP Fire Station 1 Kaiserslautern East crew chief. “Working together with other fire departments has several advantages,” said Lang, who has worked for the garrison for 10 years. “You get to know new people, train with different equipment your station may not have and learn new techniques from others.” A mutual-aid agreement brings both fire departments together during emergency situations and is beneficial to military and civilian communities, Lang said. “The agreement helps both sides,” said the crew chief, who began his career as a youth fire fighter in 1990. “By training and collaborating, all firefighters get to know each other and work effectively together when disasters happen.” The exercise scenario involved a truck crash on the KAD’s railroad tracks with two individuals injured at the scene. The realistic training gave the firefighters a chance to practice their lifesaving skills as well as foster their professional partnership during crises situations.

After the exercise ended, both groups received training on each other’s vehicles, equipment and techniques. “This was a great exercise. I’m glad the opportunity to train together was possible,” said Roes, a 19-year emergency medical technician with the

German Red Cross. “I would like to thank the garrison fire department for this valuable training.” Garrison Fire Chief Marshal Fiedler said he would like to see more mutualaid response training in the future. “We enjoyed working with the Hochspeyer Volunteer Fire Department,” the chief said. “Their knowledge and commitment to serve the community is admirable, and we look forward to the continued growth of this important partnership.”

Kaiserslautern (9-5) plays again this weekend on the road at Vicenza, before ending the regular season in two weeks versus rival Ramstein. The Raiders got three of their five total hits in a fourth-inning outburst that saw them get 13 batters to the plate. Walks, passed balls, a hit batsman, and a balk were coupled with those three Raider hits. Just a week ago, it was the Kaiserslautern defense that had to similarly endure in a loss to Lakenheath. Ronin Sherman and Kaden Sekbeil combined to strike out six batters and limit Stuttgart to just four hits. Sherman and four other Raiders produced singles, with Mathias Perrin scoring twice in the win. The Raiders were winning early in the opener but lost 5-2 against the homestanding Panthers. bats produced only a single and a double, but the biggest element was a pair of KHS infielding errors that kept the door open. Nolan Sherman and Stuttgart pitcher Gabe Simpson each threw well, with Sherman allowing only three hits and Simpson giving up two to the Raiders. George Stephan’s double and Nolan Sherman’s single were notable KHS contributions.

Olivia Warren had two hits and Chloe robbed a Stuttgart player of a homer with an amazing play in the outfield where she caught the ball against the fence, but the Lady Raiders had little of the hitting production they’d seen earlier.

She was also 4-of-5 batting with five runs batted in while twin sisters Chloe and Phoenix Wisennand each had two hits and it was a home run by Phoenix that helped push KHS to the win, after they trailed 11-1. The second game saw a great effort by Abby Young on the hill, with seven strikeouts over five innings of work. Home runs by Victoria Jackson and Mariana Conklin were not enough, though, as nearly all of the rest of the bats went cold.

Love and Kimble were the lone graduating senior players honored Saturday, as RHS continues to win with a young roster. In the second game, Ramstein had the lead from the start then scored 11 times in the fourth inning to clinch it. Spangdahlem countered with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth but RHS sophomore Chandler Baker came in and needed just four pitches to end the game. Guzaldo scored four times, with two hits and two walks, while Shoffner had five RBI thanks to two hits including a double. Austin Rodefer and Oliver Seelig each had two hits with a triple and two RBI, plus Bellew rapped two hits to support mound starter Kindle. Kindle, the Royals’ usual second game starter, threw 46 pitches and gave up only two hits, striking out five Sentinels and walking only one. Relievers Kelty Hood and Baker were brought in later but Ramstein was never really challenged throughout the pair of midday games. Ramstein will travel to the United Kingdom this weekend and play Lakenheath, the program they met in last year’s Euro finals. Spangdahlem squad with 11 hits and 10 walks drawn, while never striking out. Hollenbeck threw 64 pitches and located nearly 40 percent of them for strikes. She gave up only two hits and she walked six Lady Sentinel batters. Walker had a single, double and a triple among her three at-bats and joined Isabel Craige with three RBIs. Azure Agricula also had a triple, combining with Sydney Smith for four RBI in the runaway victory. Savannah Sparrow contributed two hits and scored three times for Ramstein. The Lady Royals were set to join their RHS baseball counterparts, as well as the school’s two soccer programs, in heading up to England for doubleheader games against Lakenheath this weekend. TRACK AND FIELD Ramstein boys, girls joust with Stuttgart at weekend meet Ramstein and Stuttgart volleyed back and forth at last weekend’s Stuttgart Invitational track and field meet. Ramstein’s boys wound up well

May 11, 2018 ahead of the Panthers but Ramstein’s girls had to settle for second place when Stuttgart won that overall team title. CiCi Williams put forth another convincingly dominant effort and won both the long jump (15 feet, 9.5 inches) and triple jump (33-11). Williams won the 300 meter hurdles as well, with a time of 48.70 which was more than two seconds ahead of the next finisher. Sophomore Caprinia Goode went for 29 feet, 2.75 inches to win the shot put while Mackenzie Perkes was second in the 3,200 meters. Ramstein placed two females, Jaya Worthington and Williams in second and third for the 100 meter hurdles. Ramstein got a second place effort from its 4x800 meter relay quartet of Mya McKinley, Megan Hull, Catherine Hickman, and Mackenzie Perkes. For the 1,600 meter spring medley race, Sybella Crespo, Kori Fay, Delaney Longmuir, and McKinley joined together to also take second. Dominique Arizpe won the boys 100 meters and 200 meters to send a clear message with Euros less than 20 days away. Arizpe and rival Devin Gamble of Vilseck reached the 100 meters tape together but the sophomore Arizpe leaned in to snare the top prize. Jerome Smith of Stuttgart also ran close and the top five finishers were separated by just 11/100ths of a second. The 200 meters was less congested as Arizpe left no doubt about Dominique Arizpe who crossed first. “I got here sort of late last season but did qualify for Euros as a ninth grader,” said Arizpe. “I’ve seen a lot of these athletes at other meets and we are familiar with each other. The rest of the season will be fun.” Another area of RHS strengthwas the relays, as the Royals swept first place in all four of the events. Ramstein’s foursome of Isaiah Allen, Cameron Chester, Jalon Lewis, and Alexander Sims won the 4x100 relay with Stuttgart and Aviano right on their heels; Nick Clinton, Tyrese L o v e d a y, C o n n e r Nick Clinton Looney, and

Jose Serrano won the 4x400 relay about six seconds ahead of second place Stuttgart; Clinton, Owen Mendenhall, Enrius Collazo, and Dash Rogers won the 4x800 relay about 20 seconds ahead of second place Naples. In the 1,600 sprint medley Ramstein inserted Victor Foster, Nicholas Blake, Lewis, and Serrano to win by more than seven seconds over Stuttgart. Serrano showed speed (51.59) along with his distance ability and won the 400 meters while Clinton was third in the same race. Serrano also won (2:01.57) the 800 meter race after holding off late charges from competitors. A productive junior, Rogers won the 3,200 meters (10:19.81) and got second place in the 1,600, finishing just behind Roberto Eiseman from Wiesbaden. Jackie Harris and Bryce Thomas were 1-2 in the boys’ 110 meter hurdles, then Harris, Loveday and Jerod Little duplicated last week’s effort by sweeping all three places in the 300 meter hurdles. Harris and Loveday reached the finish line together, but Harris was a millisecond ahead and got first place. In the high jump, Harris earned Ramstein points by finishing third behind a pair of Wiesbaden athletes. Kaiserslautern teams at Baumholder meet Host Baumholder found success in hurdles races when Solo Turgeon swept the 110 meter and 300 meter courses but it was Kais ers lautern who made the biggest splash at last weekend’s meet. The Raider boys and girls each won first place and Solo Turgeon had numerous standout performances, sweeping the top three places in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. Results of top finishes by area athletes are listed, along with times and distances. GIRLS 100 METERS 3. Elena Russey, KHS (13.92)

The Ramstein boys won 6-0 after leading 3-0 halftime on Senior Day, when six players were playing their final regular season home game.

May 11, 2018

Ramstein scored two quick goals in the first 15 minutes of the match, with Dylan Grimes and Chris Slover registering points. Anthony Villella and Jaden Buelvas got credit for assists and Villella assisted Slover on another goal before halftime. “Black Forest had a similar situation last week against Marymount, trailing 3-0 at halftime but tying things at 3-3 later on,” said RHS coach Dominik Ludes. “We talked at

the break and wanted to make our guys aware that the game was by no means decided yet.” Sending off seniors Grimes, Dante Lapitan, Daniel Shin, Kyle Vargas, Marcello Buitrago, and team captain Gregory McMillan created a need to indeed finish strong with the Royals doing just that. While defensively holding Black Forest to few shots on goal, Ramstein got another Slover score, then a direct corner kick goal from Buitrago that made it 5-0. “Tamar Holmes had a big day after moving to centerback for Noah Yancy, who was ill,” said Ludes. “Tamar had never played center for us but he won basically every tackle and he was a big reason that BFA only got a few shots off.” Gregory McMillan also played most of the minutes and was solid on defense. Garrett Erickson and Jason Thomas each spent time in goal and were unchallenged, with Gavin McMillan getting the final Ramstein goal after an assist by Villella. had a 1-1 tie with BFA but completed its season undefeated. The varsity team will head up now to meet Lakenheath. Ludes said it’s the first time in 10 seasons that Ramstein has played an away match there. Ramstein varsity girls stay undefeated A 3-0 win over Black Forest came after a pair of goals from Gabs Janes plus another by Rocio Fernandez. The Lady Royals are on top of the DODEA Division I standings and played a friendly match against a German opponent Tuesday night to tune up for the Lakenheath trip. The RHS junior varsity girls lost 2-0 to Black Forest and concluded what was an up and down season. Baumholder improved in losses to Hohenfels The Buccaneers got a goal from Jose Pinzon but lost 3-1 to Hohenfels. The play was set up with an assist by senior team captain Brandon Perales. The Baumholder girls

also lost, 6-0, despite good play from the defensive side. Both Baumholder teams are set to end the regular season at Spangdahlem this week. Kaiserslautern soccer falls twice at Wiesbaden The Lady Raiders (2-31) were down to just one available substitute and succumbed 6-0 to the Wiesbaden Lady Warriors. Chloe Martin saved a corner kick try, aiding her goalkeeper Juliana Hosey, who was playing for the first time in the varsity nets. “We learned f rom this game and will have a chance to work on things before the tournament,” said Kaiserslautern coach Sue Fitzpatrick. “Our season isn’t over and our girls know it.” The defending DODEA champion KHS boys (3-3) were tied throughout their game with the Warriors, but gave up a goal in the final minutes that proved to be the difference. Both teams will look to close on a high note and make noise in Euro tourney play.

Home alone — rules for dogs by Bret Helenius We all love our four-legged friends. They show us unconditional love when we get home and they are more than happy to give us a lick on the cheek when we are down. We go through great lengths to take them with us, even when we move halfway around the world. When you land in Germany, there are many privileges that accompany dog ownership. Bringing your dog to a beer garden on a nice sunny day is one of those great privileges (it really helps if “Fido” is trained). With great privilege comes great responsibility. Germany has clear rules within the German Animal Welfare Act regarding your dog with regard to quality of life, leaving them at home alone and many other topics. Here is a quick reference list of some hot topics to refer to: • A dog should not stay alone without being walked for more than five hours (recommended dog walking time is at least one hour per day).

• You are not allowed to chain up the dog within the apartment or keep it locked in a separate room. • Owners should not keep their dogs on balconies, in basement rooms and bathrooms when the owner leaves the house. • Dog owners must pick up excrement left from their dog during walks. • Dog owners must keep their dogs on a leash while walking them on public streets in housing areas. Violators may be punished with fines up to €5,000. • Dog owners need to make sure that their pets don’t bark and whine during quiet hours: 1 to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Outside these hours, dog owners must ensure that dog noises do not last longer than 10 consecutive minutes (or more than 30 minutes cumulatively per day). There is an easy to understand English version of the German Animal Welfare Act put out by Michigan State University at https://www.animallaw.info/statute/ germany-cruelty-german-animal-welfare-act
