435 CRG flexes muscles during Agile Bison 23-1 Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Alexandra M. Longfellow 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs More than 120 personnel from the 435th Contingency Response Group deployed to support Exercise Agile Bison 23-1 at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, March 5-14.

Agile Bison is an exercise that allows the 435th CRG to practice its core mission set — open the Airbase — in a simulated contested environment, with the added bonuses of dedicated airlift and partner nation integration.

Although the 435th CRG operated this exercise on an already fully operational airfield, Chièvres Air Base leadership turned over many services to 435th CRG control in an effort to replicate a more austere airfield environment.

The Diamond Strong convention was held for more than 30 current or aspiring first sergeants to gain knowledge from keynote speakers on leading in complex organizations, building a post COVID-19 workforce and inspiring trust.

First sergeants advise commanders on the readiness, health, morale, and quality of life for Airmen and their families to ensure a mission-ready force.

“All of you in here have a foundational relationship; and that foundation is the purpose of being the diamond in a community and taking care of people,” said Todd Simmons, who is an industry leadership coach. “It needs to be deeper than just a foundational relationship.”

The convention included discussions on how Airmen at all levels of an organization must rise to the challenges of today and tomorrow within an increasingly dynamic and contested environment.

“We must win in competition,”

said Lt. Col. Ronaldo Martinez, 450th Intelligence Squadron commander. “How we shape the battle space, and how we understand the environment in which we operate is key to effectively responding to our adversaries, accomplishing our mission and ultimately protecting our nation First sergeants have a unique first-hand look at their Airmen and impact their quality of life.

First sergeants can lead Airmen to become innovative thinkers, helping shape the Air Forces future battlefield.

“Great philosophers, and thinkers throughout the ages learned and created dialogue in Heidelberg,” said Chief Master Sgt. Nathaniel Perry Jr., Air Force first sergeant special duty manager.

“Dialogue is when we share ideas; a collection of ideas together. This will help us stay on top.”

As first sergeants develop their skills in leadership, they simultaneously grow their community.

Having conventions like Diamond Strong keeps our forces missionready.

“I have to make sure that we take the time to thank all our guests today,” said Chief Master Sgt. Charmaine Kelly, 86th Airlift Wing command chief, during closing remarks. “Thank you so much for pouring so much into our teammates.”

Page 3 CRG utilizes and deploys scalable, cross-functional, and rapidly deployable specialized teams throughout both continents to successfully fulfill higher headquarters requirements.

“We are a multi-capable Airmen unit, with multi-function capabilities,” explains Wuebold.

The contingency response concept unites Airmen from various functional backgrounds such as: aircraft maintenance, aerial port logistics, engineering, air traffic control, medical, and several others, to establish airfield and base operations support in all climates as well as contested environments.

In contingency response, each member is a multi-capable Airman meaning that along with their primary duty, Contingency response members can also fulfill secondary duty positions including force protection.

“Even though my primary duty is to make sure that aircraft are being downloaded, we must know a little bit about everything to help make sure that our area gets built up, which means everyone works together,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Cecelia Bak, 435th CRG mobile aerial port supervisor. “You get to work with other AFSCs [Air Force Specialty Code] and expand our horizons on not only what your job is capable of doing but what other jobs can do and how those come together and work together to create a working piece that’s just more than you. The CRE [contingency response element] is where MCA’s [multi-capable Airman] thrive.”

The 435th CRG’s ability to mobilize U.S. and NATO assets is a vital component in implementing initiatives in line with the National Defense Strategy.

ACE demands rapid deployment and high tempo operations. The CRG meets these demands through its ability to rapidly deploy and establish airbase operations within 24 hours of arrival. Exercise Agile

Bison also develops the 435th CRG’s flexibility and capability to assist and work with allied and partner nations.

“One thing we are trying to instill is better NATO cohesion with our unit,” Wuebold said. “We’ve looked for ways to integrate with our NATO allies during this exercise more than we have before.”

Prior to the exercise, as part of the planning process, the 435th CRG hosted an Air Planning Conference alongside Dutch, German, and Belgian mobility aircraft units, drop/landing zone controlling units, and airfield survey teams to effectively plan how and when various elements of integration would occur. The exercise scenario led them to leverage one another’s assets and experience to work through challenges, demonstrating the true value of the Alliance.

Within Agile Bison, the 435th CRG also exercised the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing’s new mission commonly referred to as “AGOW Inside Out.” Five days into the exercise, the contingency response element was dynamically re-tasked to deploy a 25-person contingency response team from Chièvres Air Base to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, to hot-pit refuel F-16s.

A contingency response team provides USAFE-AFAFRICA highly agile mobility teams to project airpower anytime and anywhere.

Although the 435th CRG trains hot-pit refuel operations at various times throughout the year, Agile Bison marked the first time it conducted these operations in conjunction with a large contingency response exercise.

Overall, Exercise Agile Bison 23-1 tested the readiness, proficiency, and adaptability of the 435th CRG, successfully preparing the unit for future taskings in the European and African area of responsibilities.

If you do not have orders or a port call date, only the Pre-Inspection will be scheduled. A separate visit will be necessary to schedule the Final Inspection once orders and a port call date are confirmed.

Once the Final Inspection is completed, any necessary clearance documents will be signed for your out-processing checklist at the Final Inspection with the Facilities Inspector.

Off-base Out-processing

Provide your Landlord (LL) a minimum of 30 days written termination notice (form provided from the Housing Office).

Contact the UTAP office and FMS for outprocessing instructions.

Schedule lodging. You are authorized up to the last 10 nights, preceding your departure (counting backwards from your Departure/Port Call date). **TLA and OHA may only overlap for 5 days.** Make sure to clear your off-base house within 5 days of checking in to TLA. Schedule the final walk through with your LL. Complete the required Premises Condition/ Inventory Form with the LL. The LL MUST complete sections 19 and 20.

The visitors toured the compound to gain a better understanding of its mission.

“We want to educate people on who we are and what we can do,” said U.S Air Force Capt. Vincent Dominicis, 5th Combat Training Squadron chief of operations, analytics and assessments. “We showed our distinguished visitors what Spartan Warrior is, which is one of our flagship exercises, and how it can apply to everyone.”

The Warfare Center is the U.S. Air Force’s premiere distributed training center in Europe, providing enhanced joint and combined warfighter readiness training through live, virtual, and constructive simulation capabilities.

Successful real-world operations begin with the lessons learned in training environments such as this.

The immersion began with a brief where representatives of the compound took time to explain the work being done and even areas to strengthen.

After the briefing, the leaders were shown the different facilities around the compound and how they are used for training.

“Our mission here is to enhance joint, NATO and partner nation warfighter strategic, operational and tactical readiness through training, education, exercises and policy,” said Col. Dean Berck, USAFE-AFAFRICA Warfare Center commander. “With the support from the visitors we hosted, we hope to continually improve our product.”

by Tammy Muckenfuss U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz conducted a leadership team off-site at the Baumholder Rheinlander Convention Center to synchronize efforts in the development of the Garrison Strategic Plan, promote stewardship and esprit de corps, and foster teaching, coaching and mentorship between directorates and special staff, Feb. 23.

The command team gathered leaders from all directorates for a day of learning and collaboration. The commander’s intent was threefold — to build teamwork, develop leadership and to create ownership for the garrison’s shared mission and vision for the future.

After a morning filled with trainings to include workforce development and a resilience course, the group got down to the business of developing new and improved mission and vision statements for USAG RheinlandPfalz.

They started by looking at the current vision and mission statements alongside examples from U.S. Army Installation Management Command, IMCOMEurope and other theater garrisons to get them thinking about USAG Rheinland-Pfalz in terms of WHO we are and WHAT we do, and how best to capture the essence of this unique garrison, that supports the largest military commu-

nity overseas, into clear, concise, meaningful statements.

In the increasingly dynamic environment that is covered within the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz footprint, it is important for leaders at all levels to focus on the essentials.

For USAG Rheinland-Pfalz the two essential tasks that must always be performed are 1) delivering services and 2) providing quality infrastructure for Soldiers — to enable U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s readiness.

The new vison and mission statements outline how this can be achieved, namely through services that offer solutions to challenges and are supported by the garrison’s service culture and the commitment to operational excellence from all employees.

The resulting vision and mission statements for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz were revealed in an announcement from Col. Reid Furman during a digital employee town hall held on March 1.

Mission U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz serves, supports, and secures the total force community enabling power projection for the European Theater.

Vision A trusted team of Army Professionals dedicated to supporting our mission partners and communities. We deliver worldclass garrison services and enable readiness to meet emerging requirements.

“The new vision and mission statements are shorter, more clear and powerful,” said Furman. “More importantly, the statements reflect the work of our team. A collaborative effort from all the directors that I am proud to announce.”

The key themes within the statements are service and support. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz promotes a culture of service — that is “how” we do what we do and the integration of base services we provide.

Support accounts for the infrastructure we provide to the community, our Soldiers, Civilians, Families, retirees and local national workforce. In short, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz secures a total force community.

“The new vision and mission speaks to our force protection mission,” Furman added. “We chose ‘total force community’ in the mission to be as inclusive as possible of our total population that includes all of our mission partners and families across all of our bases.”

“The vision captures who we are and who we want to be,” Furman said. “We can thank Greg Williams, Director of Public Works, for including trust, which demonstrates the trust we place in each directorate and every member of our team. And, it acknowledges the trust that is placed in us to do our jobs each day — providing quality services to all our families and mission partners.”

21 TSC observes French logistics elements in complex exercise

Story and photos by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command A team from 21st Theater Sustainment Command attended phase two of Orion 23, a French exercise, to observe and discuss reception, staging, onward movement, integration, and sustainment of troops and equipment movements on a large scale with French Logistics Command, COM LOG, in southern France, Feb. 28-March 4.

Orion 23 is a French-led, national level, multi-domain operations exercise to initiate crisis response with division echelon operations including the rapid mobilization of land forces against a sizeable enemy force.

Phase two of the exercise focuses on the projections of those large forces into global conflict and is three weeks long.

Forces Unit Partnership Program signed in 2020, 21st TSC is partnered with COM LOG to strengthen capabilities and to increase the program’s interoperability at the battalion, brigade, division, and corps levels.

“Orion 2 is a change of scale,” said French Land Forces Brig.

“The main challenge for us now, is to go up and to be able to manage a larger scale operation.”

The magnitude of this exercise is unlike any exercise France has executed since the Cold War. “We want to guarantee to our allies that we are able to be this framework nation for logistics,” said Fauche.

The exercise observation began in Miramas where French troops deployed to the seaport of embarkation in Toulon and headquarters of 519th Transportation Regiment, a unit within COM LOG and partnered to 838th Transportation Battalion, 598th Transportation Brigade, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. Troops left Toulon on a vessel overnight and disembarked in Sète for RSOM. This production of onloading and

offloading vehicles and equipment from a vessel allowed 21st TSC to engage with their counterparts in the 519th Transportation Regiment and discuss processes and effectiveness.

“It was extremely insightful to see how the French are exercising their ability to deploy from a strategic SPOD [seaport of debarkation] into a tactical port,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Vance Zemke, head of delegation, operations planner, 21st TSC. Capt. Austin Peiffer, transportation planner, 598th Transportation Brigade, 21st TSC, engaged with several members from 519th Transportation Regiment to discuss operations.

“What we are doing here is talking to them to understand their capabilities and how they fit into their larger hierarchy of the deployment enterprise,” said Peiffer.

Lt. Col Frederic, chief of operations, 519th Transportation Regiment said, “The best way to evolve our mutual knowledge is really to be at the port and on the ship together.”

Observers from 598th Transportation Brigade agree with Frederic and hope to see

more of these engagements occur and the integration of personnel into operations.

The theater support command, located in Sète, is where Logistics Force Command Post, PCFL, held operations to track movement, supply, and medical services. From Sète, logistics teams led a convoy of over 170 vehicles to Castres to set up a logistics support command.

French leaders guided 21sts TSC observers through command post bunkers to view the tactical operations center and logistics communications center.

The visit incorporated meeting medical transport and support services as well. The 21st TSC’s 421st Multifunctional Mobility Battalion, 30th Medical Brigade is partnered with a French Medical Regiment, RMED, under the same unit partnership program with USAREUR-AF and French Land Forces. 421st MMB observed a forward resuscitative surgical detachment equipped with operating room, emergency room, and intensive care unit in Sète and emergency care services in Castres.

Pet morale visits relaunch at LRMC

Story and photos by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Over the past 70 years, the corridors of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center have been graced by celebrities, musicians, politicians, and foreign dignitaries. The latest star to turn heads walking through hallways and patient rooms at LRMC was a four-year-old with curly brown hair, big brown eyes, and puppy breath.

With the wag of a tail, Saif, an Australian Labradoodle, was the first pet visitor at LRMC in

over three years as part of the American Red Cross at Landstuhl’s Pet Visitation Program.

The program aims to serve the military community by visiting military hospital patients and staff to boost morale.

“When (patients) are going through troubling times, sometimes the littlest things make such a big difference. We hope that we can be that difference in their day,” said DeDe Musa, a Red Cross volunteer and Saif’s handler. “We just finished our first visit and it was a huge success. I’m really excited in knowing that (Saif) is going to get a kick out of this.”

“The dogs have to be comfortable around different situations because when they come (to LRMC), there are smells, noises and conditions that are different,” said Raffaella Burriss, who certifies pets for the program. “I don’t judge the dog as a pet, I’m just seeing whether the pet fits the hospital environment.”

Aside from delivering smiles to those the pet interacts with, studies show pet visitations in hospital settings also decrease stress, lower blood pressure, and reduce loneliness for patients.

with few visitors, so the morale dogs and the petting of the dog really brings smiles and kind of makes their day,” said Burriss.

Since 2004, Burriss has volunteered at the Landstuhl Red Cross office providing canine expertise and certifications for the program.

Following complications, the program went on hiatus at the onset of COVID-19 in 2020. Since reinitiating the program, only Saif has completed the certification process.

“My family always looked at (Saif) as such a loving member of our family who’s got something special and unique in his own way,”

said Musa, a native of Fort Worth, Texas. “I heard an advertisement calling for volunteers and I thought I was just at the right place, at the right time.”

The pooch’s first visit consisted of visits to inpatient wards and meeting with staff members. While Musa recognizes the benefits future visits will bring staff and patients at LRMC, she admits the visits also help her and Saif with their own disposition.

“The visits are going to bring a lot of joy to the two of us, but most importantly, joy and comfort to the patients,” said Musa.

HOLLAND from Page 1 of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils, of all colors, line the streets of North Holland, a Dutch province, as their scent fills the air and all your troubles melt away.

The entire northwest coast serves as the festival venue for this ‘natural’ (I mean.. they don’t plant themselves.. but still) spectacle that everyone with the ability to do so should witness in their lives.

As it is only a few hours’ drive from Germany, North Holland can be explored during a slightly extended weekend. It’s the ideal location to rewind and ride your bike along the fields, hike across the dunes or go for strolls on the beach.

There are also a number of small towns in the area worth visiting to guarantee that your trip is equal parts nature, architecture and food, which everyone knows to be the holy trinity of traveling.

There are maps to find the best tulip fields but, honestly, they are everywhere.

Nonetheless, here are a couple of places to keep in mind when looking for accommodation and to type into your GPS: Wildrijk and Belkmerweg 65, Sint Maartensvlotbrug; t’Zand and Westerweg 8, Callantsoog.

Alkmaar The area’s most famous larger town, and known as the “Dutch City of Cheese,” Alkmaar could be referred to as a mini Amsterdam. With fantastic architecture, canals, independent shops and so much green everywhere, it can certainly compete with the country’s capital minus all the people.

I have been told it’s considered rude to keep your curtains or blinds drawn in the Netherlands so there are plenty of tastefully decorated houses to peek into and grab some interior design inspiration as you walk along the water or discover little alleys.

At Anne & Max you can enjoy a cup of coffee or fresh food on an actual boat because it’s Holland and that’s just how they do it over there. Whatever else you might be craving can be found here as well, with international restaurants, cafés and pancake places as far as the eye can see.

Tip: try some Poffertjes, fluffy mini pancakes served with powdered sugar and an extra dose of delicious.

Dutch Cheese Museum The country’s official cheese museum, Kaasmuseum, offers a multi-story exhibition located in the heart of Alkmaar and features interesting facts and historical artifacts surrounding the art and craft of cheese making and how it has changed through time. You even get a gouda sample with your ticket. Admission costs €6 per adult and €2.50 per child.

It offers a nice view of the historic market square, which still hosts the traditional cheese market, Kaasmarkt, every Friday morning until September 27. It’s quite the spectacle with wheels of cheese being carried around and members of the cheese guild (yup, it’s a thing) dressing up. Its exact origin date is unknown but the celebration definitely dates back to the early 1600s.

Keukenhof Keukenhof is the park with the world’s largest variety of tulips and about 7 million bulbs blooming every year. Admission costs €19.50 per adult. It is absolutely breathtaking but it does get quite crowded, particularly during weekends, so you might want to consider taking those insta shots in the public tulip fields surrounding Lisse instead.

Be careful not to trample on the flowers and don’t walk into the fields. Farmers also ask that you do not sit in them as you

can carry the seeds elsewhere and we don’t want these perfectly color-coded seas of gorgeousness to have any invalids amongst them. The park only opens for 8 weeks a year and is open from March 23 to May 14.

Haarlem Another cozy town on the water, Haarlem is the capital of North Holland. It’s quite hip and modern and has an annual flower parade where visitors can admire ‘flower sculptures’ on floats that started their day all the way up in Noordwijk. You can also enjoy freshly made Stroopwaffles, caramel-filled slices of deliciousness, as you wander the narrow streets. The city also has lots of art museums, the oldest house in the country (from 1395).

Where to stay There are plenty of great options. We stayed in a newly renovated farmhouse located in the middle of nowhere, flooded with light from all sides, only 15 minutes

by foot from the beach and 10 minutes by bike from the most magnificent tulip fields.

We were greeted by a curious horse every morning and had an actual windmill right next door in case you thought it couldn’t get any more Dutch than the flowers, dunes and bike lanes surrounding it.

The area is so quiet and peaceful with nothing but a whole bunch of baby sheep (experts sometimes refer to them as lambs) and green fields in every direction you walk.

When we enjoyed this picturesque sunset with a glass of wine, there wasn’t a soul to be seen or heard. Absolute serenity.

Getting there By car, Schoorl is located less than 5 hours from Wiesbaden, 5.5 hours from the KMC and 7 from Stuttgart. There is a train connection to Alkmaar with as little as 2 changes from Kaiserslautern and it’s only a 9-minute bus ride from there to Schoorl.
