hosted European Partnership Flight 2021 alongside United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa at Kecskemét Air Base, Hungary, from June 6-12.

The event brought together air force delegates from across the European theater, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia,

Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the U.S. As Hungarian JAS 39 Gripen fighters conducted routine flying operations above, EPF participants

Page 2 STRONGER TOGETHER from Page 1 different nations presented several aspects of ACE support with a special focus on flying and logistics operations. “It has been a good opportunity to share with the other nations from NATO’s eastern regions,” said Lt. Col. László Banka, Commander of the Air Operations Support Battalion for Hungarian Defense Forces 59 at Szentgyörgyi Dezsö Air Base. “For example, Hungary was able to share its experience with Baltic air policing deployments from 2015 and 2019.” Throughout the event, air force delegates from all attending countries brought their individual expertise and national perspectives on various topics concerning the rapid deployment of aircraft in the European theater. “One of the most beneficial portions was being able to identify, in more detail, the requirements we may need to improve for our host nation capability,” said Banka. While strengthening partnerships

continues to be at the EPF program’s forefront, this event looked different from its predecessors. This particular event’s focus was to bring in air force leaders who are intimately familiar with the processes to enable mutually supported ACE operations. “These captains and colonels are the people most familiar with what their bases have to host other nations, and what their forces will need to support visiting forces,” said Mr. Leo Kowatch, USAFEAFAFRICA senior strategy analyst. “Although they discussed many logistics and technical issues, new friendships were the most important result.” The EPF event sought to form new relationships, but old bonds were also strengthened throughout the week. Air National Guard Airmen from Ohio came to brief ACE concepts as well. The Ohio ANG has been partnered with the HDF for 28 years as part of the Department of Defense’s State Partnership Program. “Not only did we get to expand and strengthen our partnership

with Hungary and learn more about their air capabilities, we were able to do the same thing with our other partner nations,” said Air National Guard Maj. Eric Hoelle, 200th Red Horse Squadron director of operations. “It’s been a great opportunity for us to learn more about them and for them to learn about us.” Throughout the week, participants worked in collaborative workshops with personnel representing a variety of disciplines. “The overarching goal with these partnership flights is being able to get the different partner nations and allies to be able to work together,” said Master Sgt. Brandon Stubblefield, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron operations superintendent. “The goal is for them to become partners that want to work together, know how to work together, and have some new contacts.” The series of workshops and practical events provided opportunities for partner nations to col-

Robert Tibensky, Chief Coordinator of the F-16 Program in the Slovak Armed Forces and senior military advisor to the Chief of Defense. “For Slovakia, better understanding of ACE operational concept and the presented information from participating countries about providing their national host nation support gave us better understanding of how to improve the current infrastructure at our main air bases which will receive the brand new fleet of the Slovak Falcons and have to provide HNS for allies as well.” The event’s closing workshop had participating countries

employ the discussed ACE concepts by responding to simulated scenarios and prompts. “One of the biggest takeaways is that we have to work together to make deterrence work,” Banka said. All nations present shared the different capabilities they had to host other forces, giving a better picture of how the partner nations could support each other in employing successful ACE operations. “This course was invaluable in advancing our ability to understand the needs of a deploying force and consequently developing an integrated support plan leveraging the capabilities of all participating nations,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jason Work, 435th Contingency Response Group commander. USAFE-AFAFRICA continues to invest in its strategic partnerships with key allies in Europe and aims to enhance collective defense posture, regional cooperation and interoperability.

Proactive deterrence in action: 435 CRSS air advisors train Czechian AF by Senior Airman Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron air advisor team is leading the way in building partner capacity by training NATO countries such as the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Lithuania. “We are that middle piece that connects the U.S. embassy, (United States Air Forces Europe - Air Forces Africa), the subject matter experts, and the point-of-contacts,” said Tech. Sgt. James Stewart, 435th CRSS security forces air advisor. The 435th CRSS air advisor team and members from the 52nd Operations Support Squadron from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, deployed to the Czech Republic in April 2021 to train Czech air force members on joint combined aircrew system testers, a device to evaluate aircrew flight equipment. The 52nd OSS trained the Czech air force in order to modernize their military prowess and establish them as a strong NATO partner, while the 435th CRSS air advisor team coordinated between Czech embassies to ensure the operation ran smoothly. “As air advisors, we have that big picture roadmap in the back of our heads at all times,” said Capt. Sylvan LaChance, 435th CRSS flight commander. “(For example,) ‘This is the direction we want to head in, and these are the events or missions that are going to help us get there.’” By the end of the training eight

Czech airmen at the 21st tactical air base successfully completed aircrew flight equipment training, which further enhanced their capabilities to train future JCAST technicians. Moreover, a primary objective of this training is to increase NATO cooperation between the two countries, which will result in an enduring partnership furthering the mission. “It’s important for us to execute so we can train our NATO partners to meet those interoperability goals we

have as the U.S. Air Force,” Stewart said. As subject matter experts, they are responsible for teaching all Czech air force members on JCAST material. Likewise, air advisors are responsible for making sure SMEs have all the material they need to teach efficiently. “I was nervous going into it because I did not know what to expect,” said Staff Sgt. Jacob Wade,

52nd OSS non-commissioned officer in charge of aircrew flight equipment quality assurance. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of technicians. They were excited about learning and picked it up very well.” An air advisor’s mission is to go behind the scenes and make sure operations between the U.S. and the host nation country run smoothly, but some foreign national service

members are more than comrades — they are also friends. “We do stuff outside of the uniform to build those relationships because we’ll be coming back to do more training,” Stewart said. “We want to create a bond.” The 435th CRSS air advisor team is far from done. Up next, the team is planning to conduct missions in Lithuania and Ukraine later this year.

Story and photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An Airman from the 86th Operations Support Squadron was named Airlifter of the Week June 10, for his outstanding display of leadership and innovation. Staff Sgt. Raphael Frost, noncommissioned officer in charge of aircrew flight equipment, streamlines the way that AFE issues equipment, making it faster for the aircrew to get what they need when they need it. “He's taken knowledge from his previous assignment in Kunsan, and jumped into innovating our current processes and improving them in making them more effi-

cient by applying their processes to our own,” said Capt. Riley Snowden, 37th Airlift Squadron flight commander. Frost currently works as the supervisor over four sections at AFE. Since arriving at Ramstein, Frost has excelled as a leader by drawing from his experience at Kunsan Air Base, Korea, working on F-16s. “He’s always stepping up to make sure he’s leading by example, in addition to the fact that he’s never just sitting around,” said Snowden. “He's always looking for a way to get involved, whether that’s taking care of equipment or training Airmen.” Frost, a Chicago native, also

enjoys using his time mentoring younger Airmen on things he wishes he had known when he joined the military. “He takes it above and beyond, working with young Airmen,” said Master Sgt. Ashley Spencer, AFE superintendent. “Teaching them how to cook and making sure they have all of their needs met with being so young and just leaving home.” After enduring a couple of injuries during training years ago, Frost was motivated to gain a better understanding of how to take better care of his body. by Airman Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs With summer heating up and COVID-19 restrictions loosening, the 86th Airlift Wing reminds Airmen and families to stay safe and vigilant while enjoying the season. Tech. Sgt. Edgar Sanchez, 86 AW safety Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of inspections and assessments, reports that for the past five years the Air Force loses an average of 1,300 Airmen to injuries and mishaps throughout the summer. “Summer is a perfect opportunity to go hiking, camping, kayaking and rock climbing,” said Sanchez. “With that in mind, Airmen are reminded to wear protective gear, stay hydrated and understand the proper skill level before attempting an activity.” Airmen are also encouraged to wear sunscreen, shades, lightweight clothing and avoid high intensity activities on especially hot days. “I’m not telling Airmen not to

do anything because they’ll get hurt,” said Sanchez. “I'm just telling them to be smart, aware of their skill level and do their research before embarking on an activity.” Preparation is also important for those who wish to travel during the summer. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a resource available to all U.S. citizens and allows Airmen to travel safely, stay informed and remain connected. According to the Department of State website, enrolling in the program can provide important information about dangerous conditions affecting your overseas travel or residence. Lastly, the Bureau of Consular Affairs would like to remind Airmen that road conditions, laws and driving norms in other countries can be very different from those in the United States. Make sure to plan your route and have a current International Driver’s License if driving outside of Germany. And, remember to buckle up, no matter where you are.

NASA-DLR study finds sustainable aviation fuel can reduce contrails by J.D. Harrington NASA Headquarters, Washington Cleaner-burning jet fuels made from sustainable sources can produce 50%-70% fewer ice crystal contrails at cruising altitude, reducing aviation’s impact on the environment, according to research conducted by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Ice crystal contrail formations can linger in the upper atmosphere for hours and affect the way Earth is heated and cooled. They produce localized increases in temperature — which over time impacts climate change. “We know that contrail formation from jet exhaust has a larger, more immediate impact on climate than carbon dioxide emissions,” said Richard Moore, a NASA scientist at Langley Research Center in Virginia. “This research shows we have an opportunity using alternative fuels to make immediate changes that could help the planet.” The research was published today in the Nature research journal Communications Earth & Environment. Moore was one of 29 contributors to the paper. Christiane Voigt, head of the Cloud Physics Department within the DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics, served as lead author. Jet engine exhaust includes water vapor and soot particles. As the water vapor cools, it condenses. Ice crystals form when that supercooled water interacts with either exhaust soot or particles naturally present in the air. By using alternative fuel, jet engines release fewer soot particles, resulting in fewer ice crystal formations. The crystals that do form are larger, but that does not create a problem because they fall more quickly and melt in the warmer air below. “While computer models have shown that contrail ice crystal numbers should vary proportionally with aircraft engine exhaust particle emissions, it’s been really hard to observationally make this link,” Moore said. That changed in 2018 when NASA and DLR conducted a joint flight research campaign. Known as Emission and Climate Impact of Alternative Fuel experiment by DLR and ND-MAX (“N” for NASA, “D” for DLR, and MAX for maximum research opportunity) by NASA, the campaign was staged from Ramstein Air Base. The international collaboration saw the DLR’s Advanced Technology Research Aircraft A320 airliner burning alternative biofuels while

NASA’s DC-8 “Flying Laboratory” trailed a safe distance behind, sampling and analyzing gases and particles in the German aircraft’s wake. The experiment was the latest step in a series of research campaigns, some in the United States and some in Germany, that used different aircraft, flight conditions, and sampling techniques to build a knowledge base about alternative fuels. NASA led previous research flight programs over California called Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions (ACCESS I and II) in 2013 and 2014. During these campaigns, NASA’s DC-8 burned the alternate fuels, while smaller, business-class jets, such as the NASA Falcon HU-25

and DLR Falcon 20, flew behind to gather data. Those flights showed that using a blend of half biofuel and half regular fuel reduced soot emissions by as much as 50%-70%. Researchers had intended to study contrail research as part of the ACCESS campaigns, but atmospheric conditions prevented contrail formation. The more recent tests over Germany allowed researchers to gather the data they needed. “The exciting thing about this new paper is that all of the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place: We had the sustainable aviation fuel blends, the world-class DLR ATRA and NASA DC-8 research aircraft, and favorable meteorology for forming persistent contrails,” Moore said.

Alternative fuel is one of several areas of research NASA’s aeronautical innovators are exploring to make aviation more sustainable. By developing and testing new technologies for next-generation aircraft and new automation tools, NASA works to make airspace operations safer and greener. NASA partners with industry,

academia and other government agencies through its Sustainable Flight National Partnership to accomplish an aggressive climate change agenda for aviation. The partnership seeks to reduce aviation carbon emissions by 2050 compared to their 2005 level, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

F-16s exemplify ACE in Morocco by 1st Lt. Hannah Durbin U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs Two U.S. Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft from the 31st Fighter Wing, Aviano Air Base, Italy, conducted an Agile Combat Employment event in Guelmim, Morocco, June 16.

The F-16s took off from Ben Guerir Air Base, Morocco, and flew a close air support mission at the Greir Labouihi range before flying to Guelmim Airfield to practice the delivery of weapons and air support to a forward operating site. Then, the aircraft landed at Guelmim to reload weapons and refuel. The F-16s took off again and conducted a second close air support mission before returning to Ben Guerir. During the mission, the F-16s successfully delivered seven 500lb laserguided weapons. “The teams down at African Lion are taking ACE to the next level by

executing it in Africa for the first time,” said Gen. Jeff Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa commander. “Demonstrating these capabilities in new austere locations solidifies our unmatched ability to rapidly deploy combatcredible forces to any location.” A C-130J from the 86th Airlift Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, provided critical support to the event by transporting weapons, support equipment and essential personnel to Guelmim prior to the F-16s’ arrival. The Royal Moroccan Air Force also facilitated the ACE event by coordinating

fuel and vital logistical support at Guelmim. ACE training like this is critical to ensuring USAFE-AFAFRICA forces remain postured and ready to operate effectively from all locations, even austere locations and newly established airfields. The ACE event was part of African Lion, a multinational, joint exercise in North Africa that demonstrates the U.S.’ ability to mitigate global risk and operate in key environments with minimal resources. The Air Training Exercise consists of bilateral, tactical training between the Royal Moroccan Air Force and U.S. Air Force.

African Lion 2021 is U.S. Africa Command's largest, premier, joint, annual exercise hosted by Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal, June 7-18. More than 7,000 participants from nine nations and NATO train together with a focus on enhancing readiness for U.S. and partner nation forces. AL21 is a multi-domain, multi-component, and multinational exercise, which employs a full array of mission capabilities with the goal to strengthen interoperability among participants.

June is National Men’s Health month to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Melody Bordeaux 59th Medical Wing Family Emergency Clinic June is Men’s Health month which promotes a variety of activities males can do to have healthier, more active lifestyles. It’s a common stereotype that men often ignore medical issues and put off going to the doctor. However,

to help live a long and healthy life, getting regular check-ups can make a difference. “The current trend is most men live to be 76, [while] most women live to 80-something and 50 percent of these deaths are preventable,” said Joseph Lukan, 59th Surgical Operations Squadron urology nurse consultant. “Men have classically had a reluctance to seek help because of the traditional BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON

‘I am a tough guy’ [mentality].” Men have various medical screenings available to detect issues early on. “The rule of thumb is you want to get a prostate exam done every year after the age of 50,” said Lukan. “Screening should start at 40 if your dad or brother has had prostate cancer.” The American Heart Association recommends screening cholesterol levels every four to six years starting at age 20. Also, the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society recommends screening for diabetes and cancer starting at age 45. While screenings are important, when it comes to caring for one’s health, it’s about caring for the body as a whole. “A lot of the time people have this misconception that they’re coming in just to be treated for their knee or their shoulder, but we’re not just treating pain,” said Capt. Logan Davis, 59th Surgical Operations Squadron orthopedic resident. “We’re treating the person and helping them get back to the things that make them truly happy, whether it’s a sport, playing with their kids or just being able to do their hobby. In reality those functional things are going to mean more to the patient.” Along with receiving treatment when needed, it’s important to stay physically active. “I’m a really big fan of cardio in disguise so I like playing sports,” said Davis. “Even walking for extended periods can really boost your overall health. Another thing I enjoy doing is

cycling. It’s good to boost your cardiovascular health as well by challenging your heart to work harder and training your muscles and joints can help prevent future injuries.” While improving cardiovascular health, staying active can also help with weight control which also impacts men’s health. “For men, if your waistline is more than 40 inches, all that abdominal fat is gobbling up your testosterone and converting it into estrogen,” explains Lukan. “Now you’ve got this vicious cycle where you have no energy and don’t work out.” Along with a multitude of health problems, physical activity helps combat loss of bone density as patients age. “Some of the best stuff you can do for promoting bone density is leading an active life, anything from running, hiking to weight-lifting,” said Davis. “Our bones respond to the loads that we ask them. People who jump, or lift a lot of weights, their bones become stronger naturally over time.” Along with physical benefits, exercise can also have a positive impact on mental health. “All of these things overlap with each other,” said Davis. “The more physically active we are, the more endorphins our body releases. Exerting ourselves in a way we enjoy boosts our mental health, and boosts our immune system by decreasing some of the hormones like cortisol.” Oftentimes people don’t prioritize their mental health, but it plays a

large role in leading a healthy life. “Human beings are not necessarily equipped to be able to cope or handle terrible events and, unfortunately, post-traumatic stress disorder is very common,” said Maj. John Blue Star, 59th Medical Operations Squadron clinical health psychologist. “Some reasons that people may experience distress and difficulty occur after [various events such as] seeing combat, a loved one being injured or killed, being in a car accident, or sexual abuse or assault. All of these have the potential of having an impact on your mental health. It’s important to be able to experience sadness, loss, regret, happiness or joy, but especially after a trauma it might be harder to feel [healthy] feelings and easier to feel [unhealthy feelings], and then we can get stuck. Many can benefit from coaching and mental health treatment.” It’s important to address health problems as they arise because what may have started out small, if left ignored, can grow into something more serious. “There’s a reluctance to go in and get seen because a problem becomes real,” said Davis. “If you wait too long then it might actually be more of a problem so that can make things a little harder in long-term recovery. The sooner that we can be seen can usually prevent more problems developing downstream.” Please visit your physician annually or monitor your health with a physician.

The Army’s Tuition Assistance Program continues to assist Soldiers, despite glitches

Story and photo by U.S. Army Public Affairs The U.S. Army’s Tuition Assistance Program will continue to provide Soldiers with funds to assist in paying for voluntary higher education courses while the Army works to make improvements to its new tuition-assistance website. “Soldiers will be reimbursed for any out-of-pocket expenses up to their authorized amount and will have a year to file their claims,” said Col. Charles Rambo, director of Army Credentialing and Continuing Education Services for Soldiers (ACCESS). To ensure that Soldiers can continue to obtain tuition assistance benefits, the Army has established an exception to policy allowing them to sign up for educational programs through a manual process at Army education centers and offices. These exceptions to policy will bridge the gap while developers diagnose, correct, test and deploy updates to the Army IgnitED platform. The Army will work with university finance offices to ensure they understand how to input Soldier data to receive correct payments. Army personnel will also maintain

contact with the university provosts to explain the exception-to-policy process in order to resolve any issues Soldiers are experiencing. “I own this problem and take responsibility for it,” said Lt. Gen. Ted Martin, commanding general of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center. “I humbly apologize to the Soldiers who have had any financial hardship because of this.” Martin made a commitment to respond quickly to all Soldier requests for assistance. During fiscal year 2020 (October 2019 to September 2020), more than 110,000 Soldiers used the Tuition Assistance Program, and during the current fiscal year (beginning October 2020) more than 81,000 used it to enroll in over 255,000 courses. “Leaders need to guide and help their Soldiers through this situation, and we need Soldiers to keep their leadership informed as they request TA for classes,” said Sgt. Major of the Army Michael Grinston.

• Tell your chain of command you are having trouble. • Soldiers needing help with opening a ticket should request assistance from their assigned education center/office. • Find your education center at https://installations.militaryonesource.mil/?lookingfor-a=program/program-service=13/focus=program. • Contact the tuition assistance representative at your educational institution and ask about their refund policy.

Steps Soldiers can take for assistance include: • Open a Help Case on the IgnitED website at https:// armyignitedprod.servicenowservices.com/ignited.

For more information on ArmyIgnitedED, please contact Maj. Ashley Bain or Mr. Harry Sarles at Army University at ashley.m.bain. mil@mail.mil or harrison.l.sarles. civ@mail.mil.

ACCESS will verify enrollment with the educational institutions and will reimburse them. No Soldier should be paying upfront, out-of-pocket costs associated with their education within the limits of the program. Army’s first openly gay general retires after inspiring others

by Thomas Brading Army News Service Since Maj. Gen. Tammy Smith, the military’s highest-ranking openly gay officer, came out in 2012, she has tried being an example of living authentically while also being a beacon of visibility to other Soldiers and their families. It’s been nearly a decade since the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, or DADT, was repealed. The policy banned lesbians, gay men and bisexuals from serving in the military. Since then, Smith has gotten married, has been promoted not once but twice, and made history after coming out as a member of the LGBT community. This week, Smith, who was special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs, retired after 35 years of service. In 2012, her promotion to brigadier general grabbed news headlines. The general never sought to make history that followed her decision to include her wife, Tracey Hepner, during the promotion ceremony. It terrified her to come out as gay in such a public way, but she felt a responsibility to do it, she said. On a personal level, she thought, “Why wouldn’t I include my wife in my promotion?” she said. After all, it is not uncommon for Soldiers to celebrate promotions with their loved ones. The promotion ceremony Smith held her ceremony a year after the repeal of DADT. The entire event flipped everything Smith ever thought on its head. Smith used to

think, “How do we keep our lives a secret?” she said. For the first time, it wasn’t a secret. The journalists made sure of it. Smith knew showing the world she loved Hepner wouldn’t be easy. But, she hoped it would “signal to other families they shouldn’t be afraid to have their families around them,” she said. “I had trepidation and although I didn’t go running into it, I knew it was the right thing to do.” As difficult as it was for her, coming out publicly as gay “may not have been as easy for someone who was at a lower rank,” Smith said in an interview last week. On paper, the ceremony followed all the standard protocols for such an event. Friends and family gathered, she raised her right hand and repeated all the lines asked of her. Then, at the heart of the event, two individuals that Smith loved pinned on her stars. In her case, those individuals were her dad and Hepner, a woman who before DADT was repealed, she couldn’t openly love. The ceremony did not start until four in the afternoon. By three, the initial news articles published. It was official. The Army leader who spent decades keeping her life a secret was publicly out to the entire world. During the ceremony, Smith also noticed a public affairs officer briefing a three-star general about the news headlines. Knowing the Army was actively monitoring the media about her personal life may have been a minor detail, but it brought the weight of the situation into focus, she said. The couple hadn’t told their

families anything about the event being any different from other promotion ceremonies. As much as they longed to be treated like everyone else, they weren’t yet. Before they could be, the married couple had to take that first step of publicly declaring their love, while also giving visibility to the LGBT community. Smith walked into the event terrified but hopeful that once it was over, a similar event could go easier for the next person. “Visibility helps people rid their minds of stereotypes held about a person or group of people,” she said. According to Smith, to see someone of a different group, such as the LGBT community, and associate them as “a real person," she said, helps replace the stereotypes some people may have in their mind. Smith’s fears of a negative public outcry never came that day, or in the years that have followed, she said. In fact, they still receive positive messages each day. “It’s rare for Tracey or me not to hear from someone in a formation, or a family member [to a service member], or someone who knows someone in the military, either wanting to tell us about what they have read about us, or how we inspired them, or even asking us questions about their daughters getting married to another woman, wanting to do everything right for the wedding,” Smith said. People first It’s that positive direction toward acceptance that Smith also believes the Army is moving to, she said.

Maj. Gen. Tammy Smith and her wife, Tracey Hepner, during an Army event.

When Army leaders say people first, “it’s more than a slogan,” she said. “The Army is moving toward a place it has always been moving toward, and that is you can’t deny competent people. You can’t deny a good work ethic. “The Army is taking the time to put a strategy behind what it means to put people first,” she added. “[The Army] wants you to feel included in this organization, so you want to stay and continue on this team.” Soldiers reflect the diverse society they swore to defend, Smith said. “As an all-volunteer force, Soldiers who come in reflect the type of people that live in our society, and I had the benefit of a 35-year view on this,” she said. “When I came in during the 80s, things were different for women and gay people, and now in 2021, the societal rules are different again.” ‘Honest and authentic’ One of the most rewarding parts of being married in the Army has also been the simplest joys. Things that may be trivial to others have meant the world to her and Hepner. One example has been living in on-post housing among other military families who are “going about their regular Army lives every single day,” she said. “I have seen many changes over the 35 years that I have had the privilege to serve,” she said. “I think the change has been positive, and it has strengthened our military. It has made it more accessible, because of the society for which we serve. I like the direc-

tion that we are heading with our people.” Through her experience, Smith has understood not only how to accept who she is but also become an authentic version of herself, she said. “There’s a journey that takes place between first acknowledgment and being honest [with yourself],” she said. “People must find comfort and push back some of that internalized homophobia, and build a bit on the journey between honest and authentic.” Smith has been on that journey for a decade following her choice to publicly come out, and “now I feel very comfortable in my authenticity,” she said. “You don’t know how much pain you’re in until you are no longer in it,” said Hepner, who cofounded the Military Partners and Families Coalition, an organization that supports LGBT military partners and their families. “We lived under the constraints of the law and it was painful,” Hepner said, regarding life before the policy was repealed. “I wish everybody could feel what it’s like to live authentically.” That isn’t the case for everyone, she said. Many young Soldiers come into the Army at various points in that journey to living authentically. They may wonder if they can be honest with who they are and gauge where they are on the journey from honest to authentic. “Overall, the Army is a place where you can do that,” Hepner said. “But, we can’t forget that even though the Army is inclusive, each person is still [somewhere] on that individual journey.”

Protecting your home from mosquitos by Finditguide.com Recent extreme temperatures around the globe have required everyone to try to get any respite from the uncomfortable heat and humidity when at home. That often requires sleeping with the windows open so you can cool the house at night. While that might be more comfortable, it also may come at a price. The cost is annoying mosquito bites!

Photo by Kovalchuk Oleksandr, Wise ant/Shutterstock.com

Cooking at the barbeque later in the evening and eating outside allows you to take advantage of any breeze that might be blowing but it also means you are a target for mosquitos. There are ways you can protect yourself from getting bitten and even reduce the population around your home. We’ve listed some helpful tips you may want to consider. Limit breeding • Remove anything where water

• • • • •

• •

can collect in your yard (such as buckets, empty pots…). Cover outdoor tools like wheelbarrows and storage bins. Clean your gutters and drains often. Make sure your taps are not leaking. Change pet drinking water often. Change bird baths at least once per week and more often during warm weather cycles. Put sand around the base of your pots. Keep lawns and gardens trimmed (this is where mosquitos like to rest).

Limit access to your house • Get fly screens for your windows at a local German hardware store (it is a myth that Germans don’t use screens). • Get a magnetic closing screen

for your patio doorway (there are clever screens that open in the middle and come together automatically with magnets). • Make sure the gaps at the bottom of your doors are sealed. Try a safe alternative for repellent • Use citronella candles when sitting around the table outside. • Instead of chemical repellents, try “oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.” This is a natural oil which comes from the Lemon Eucalyptus tree and is recommended by the Center for Disease Control as an alternative to DEET. • Ultrasonic bug repellers have been around for some time. These will emote a radio frequency that bugs and mice do not like. It is also not picked up

by humans and most animals. • Camphor oil is supposed to be the longest lasting repellant. If you light camphor for 15-20 minutes in a closed room (and you should leave the room), it is said the room will be mosquito free. • Use garlic. Crush a few garlic cloves and boil them in water. Once cooled, put the water in a spray bottle and spray around the room. • Use coffee grounds to kill mosquito eggs. Wherever you have stagnant water around your house, sprinkle coffee grounds in it. The grounds will force the eggs to float and they will be deprived of oxygen. This will kill them before they have a chance to hatch. As always, you should seek professional medical opinion for any method you are not already familiar or comfortable with.

CPX Caps Successful DEFENDER-Europe 21 by Macario Mora 7th Army Training Command The 7th Army Training Command’s Joint Multinational Simulation Center supported, U.S. Army Europe and Africa led Command Post Exercise successfully concluded and served as the final in the DEFENDER-Europe 21 series of exercises at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Grafenwoehr, Germany, June 15. The simulation exercised the V Corps and NATO’s Multinational Corps Southeast’s ability to work as dual Corps under U.S. Army Europe and Africa while training on key war-fighting functions. The CPX is a critical exercise for the recently-activated V Corps as it builds readiness and operational capability to receive certification and assumption of mission in the European theater of operations toward the end of 2021 and become the U.S. Army’s forward deployed Corps in Europe. “We are excited to be back in Europe and soon to be under U.S. Army Europe and Africa as a key warfighting formation,” said Brig. Gen. Matthew J. Van Wagenen, deputy commanding general – maneuver, V Corps - Forward. “There is a lot of excitement for V Corps. We are definitely European facing. This is where our concentration will be.” The 7th ATC’s JMSC provided Van Wagenan and the roughly 100 V Corps Soldiers at GTA the virtual and constructed simulation space to exercise in a global environment from the Corp’s headquarters in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and in allied commands throughout Europe. The exercises’ real-world operations involved approximately 2,000 personnel across 104 countries and two continents. “It’s a distributed exercise, so the main command post is located in Fort Knox, the forward command post is in Grafenwoehr, the other training audience Multinational Corps Southeast is located in Bucharest, [Romania] and the main command post, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, is operating out

of Wiesbaden,” Van Wagenen said. The simulation included several units from ally and partner nations supporting in a variety of roles. Three brigadesthe Pinerolo and Aosta brigades from Italy and the Brigada Galicia VII from Spain - came together for the first time as part of the Italian Acqui Division to serve as the divisional element under V Corps. “Participating in this complex joint multinational exercise was a great opportunity to see how common procedures and communication systems between the U.S. Army, NATO armed forces and partners can work and interact together,” said Lt. Col. Leonardo Mancino, officer in charge, Pinerolo Brigade. “It was also a unique chance for junior officers and young NCOs to grow up and share this experience within their own units back home.” Training in exercises like the CPX is important for units like the Aosta Brigade because it gives them the opportunity to train in complex scenarios with several international allies and partners said Lt. Col.

Claudio Castiglia, officer in charge, Aosta Brigade. “It was a great opportunity to be involved in this [exercise] in terms of interoperability,” said Castiglia. “I think we showed that we are fully capable to resolve crisis and restore stability in the simulated region.” Lt. Col. Greg Pavlichko, chief of operations for JMSC, said JMSC is capable of running simulations to scale from battalion to the 4-star commands, but that the DEFENDER-Europe 21 CPX was the largest simulation of its kind ever hosted by JMSC.

its allies and partners. “This CPX is really important to us,” said Croatian Maj. Gen. Denis Tretinjak, commander of Headquarters Multinational Division-Center. “As a real combat environment, although simulated, it provides an excellent opportunity for us to improve our capabilities to plan and execute operations at the division level. This is an exceptional opportunity for us to train our capabilities.” Pavlichko said V Corps is the overall headquarters for the training audience, but that most of the down trace and combat units participating in the CPX were allied or partner nations. “This is truly a partnership building exercise,” Pavlichko said. “We have a lot of units here from our NATO alliance, and this is the first time we have trained together since COVID happened. We were able to mitigate the COVID risk through vaccinations [roughly 90 percent of participants], testing and social distancing.”

“We are learning a lot and understanding what works and what we can do better next time, so this is iterative,” Pavlichko said. “But, the foundation is there. We support exercises for everyone [within U.S. Army Europe and Africa].” Pavlichko said the JMSC simulation provides headquarters elements the opportunity to do staff analysis and work their plans to see if they would work on a battlefield without having tens of thousands of troops, their vehicles and equipment spread throughout Europe and restrained by funding requirements. The CPX is also vital for promoting interoperability between the U.S. Army and

Parlez-vous LOGFAS? US, Allies speak same language when it comes to logistics

Personnel from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, and Ukraine stand with their U.S. Army Allies in front of the Readiness and Movement Coordination Center, Panzer Kaserne, during DEFENDER-Europe 21.

by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Polish, Hungarian, German and French punctuated a cacophony of English conversations in the Readiness and Movement Coordination Center at Panzer Kaserne, Germany. The interactions embodied the spirit of DEFENDER-Europe 21 — the U.S. Army led multinational exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. Staffed by U.S. and NATO partner military logisticians, the center tested and improved U.S. and Allies’ ability to rapidly move forces and equipment throughout the European theater. If it moved by air, land or sea, the team used Logistic Functional Area Services, referred to as LOGFAS, to track it. While the official NATO languages are English and French, LOGFAS was the mother-tongue for Capable Deployer 2021. The logistic interoperability exercise was linked to Saber Guardian 2021, part of DEFENDER-Europe 21. Working with U.S. Army Europe

and Africa, the 21st TSC Theater Movements Center, known as TMC; the Movement Coordination Center Europe, known as MCEE; Standing Joint Logistic Support Group, and the Multinational Logistics Coordination Centre, known as MLCC, based in Prague, planned and coordinated Capable Deployer 21, also called CADR21. The MLCC is the NATO Department Head for Logistics Education and Training. Although 21st TSC has used LOGFAS in the past, previously non-compatible systems required U.S. personnel to recreate and maintain data manually during NATO-related exercises. CADR21 represented an investment in interoperability and automation started in 2017. The U.S. can now translate and share national data with LOGFAS immediately, allowing NATO and Allies to track multinational movements at the NATO Movement Coordination Hub in Ulm, Germany. With the information-sharing infrastructure in place, during CADR21, MCCE gave U.S. and Allied personnel intense training on the LOGFAS system. They put their new knowledge to work, sharpening their LOGFAS skills, supporting more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations as they conducted nearly simultaneous

operations across more than 30 European training areas. “It has been a one-year journey to get to this execution,” said German Army Capt. Andreas Kirk, who trained personnel to plan, execute and schedule movements in LOGFAS. Explaining that the U.S. has not relied heavily on LOGFAS over the last 10 years, he is encouraged at the proficiency and rate of adoption of the U.S. and participating nations. “To be a part of this and to see how clever the guys are after three weeks of training to use this stuff — that is a highlight,” he said. Interoperability is key to alliance readiness. Working together to quickly deploy combat forces and equipment to austere locations demonstrates the U.S. and Allies’ capability to rapidly respond to any threat from any direction. This deters aggression and validates the strength of their collective capabilities. “That’s why we use LOGFAS,” said U.K. Warrant Officer 1 Craig Lovitt, Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. “Each nation has their own way of doing things, but NATO needs that one way of doing it. That’s what LOGFAS does —it is the standard NATO reporting tool for movements and transportation and supply maintenance,” said Lovitt. According to Lovitt, LOGFAS is like learning a new language. “If you don’t use it you lose it,” he said. “So this was an ideal opportunity… more exercises would be fantastic.” During his two-month duty at the RMCC, Lovitt worked with U.S. Army Staff Sgt., John Carmona, Lead LOGFAS operator. “We track movements through the entire theater with our NATO partners,” said Carmona. “So, I’m not only tracking U.S. movements, but also tracking British, Hungarian and all the movements involved in DEFENDER 21.” LOGFAS puts detailed information on force requirements, units, transportation assets, infrastructure, deployment plans, routes, consumption rates, shipping manifests, and timelines at operators’ fingertips. The team provided Ulm with daily updates with the goal of projecting at least 72 hours out. The LOGFAS is very important because it is a really complete system,” Carmona explained. “It can generate the missions and can also track it. We can project how they are going to move, and if there are any issues or concerns, we can determine how we can deconflict the movement.” Maj. Wesley Fink, RMCC officer in charge, says one of the most useful LOGFAS features is that individual units or countries can monitor movements or areas of interest, and do not have to rely on other countries to provide updates. Multiple echelons can obtain information simultaneously. “So, if we project that a flight is coming in to Romania or Hungary, we know that we will need buses and the host nation will know there will be that type of activity,” Fink explained. That knowledge can clear the way for diplomatic and other needed approvals. When rapid mobility is critical, addressing diplomatic issues,

custom regulations, infrastructure limitations and COVID-19 requirements ahead of time can minimize delays. According to Polish Army Colonel Artur Stopka, MLCC Deputy Director, being able to share that type of information is an example of LOGFAS’ value. “It should be used by all nations,” he said. “The question is now how to increase LOGFAS capabilities and how to implement.” He added CADR21 was an ideal opportunity to strengthen international cooperation, as well as get greater acceptance of LOGFAS from all nations. Master Sgt. Grachya Kazanchyan, RMCC noncommissioned officer in charge, says that buy-in is inevitable. “Everyone is energized,” he said. “They see the potential and the value of it. We are not planning in a vacuum but rather incorporating other nations into our planning. Transparency gives us lead-time to work out potential challenges and this value provides us the speed and flexibility to conduct large operations at this scope. LOGFAS provides the U.S another tool to strengthen interoperability and strengthen partner relationship.” CADR21 tested the U.S. Army’s ability to use LOGFAS, given that it was the first time most U.S. personnel used the NATO system. According to Maj. Fink, NATO observers determined the U.S. Army demonstrated its ability to integrate with and leverage joint, alliance and host nation capabilities on a large scale, using LOGFAS. “We definitely demonstrated that we have the capability and potential to manage logistics in the NATO environment,” said Fink. By making it possible for military logisticians to communicate on the same page, LOGFAS, like language, is building relationships.

HUMBERG TOWER from Page 1 The Humbergturm was completed in 1900 and is 1,394 feet tall. Today this sandstone tower, “Grosses Humberg” (big Humberg) is a classic hiking destination that lies south of Kaiserslautern. A great place to begin your adventure is at the Bremerhof, where you will find plenty of parking, a nice little restaurant with a wonderful beer garden and a big playground for children. Bremerhof is over 200 years old and has been named one of most beautiful places in the Pfälzer Wald. Back in the 50’s and 60’s, the beer garden was added to the history books as part of the urban culture scene in Kaiserslautern. For those who prefer walking without

a backpack, there are places to eat before and after your hike, so you do not need to bring snacks if you don’t want to. Tip: enjoy a beer fresh from the tap or coffee and cake under a tent of leaves of an old chestnut tree in the beer garden. Hiking trip to Humbergturm (Humberg Tower)From Bremerhof the hike continues to Pfaffenbrunnen. The Pfaffenbrunnen (Pfaff fountain) was once the water supply for Bremerhof’s residents. Water cascades over 57 colorful sandstone blocks on the Letzbergs slope. This fountain also serves as a water fountain for your dog during the hike. A small hut with seats offers you the first opportunity to take a breather. From there you will make your way to Dreieckstein (triangular stone).

On the three sides of the Dreieckstein, you will find displays of the coat of arms of the Electoral Palatinate, the coat of arms of the city of Kaiserslautern and the coat of arms of the Chapter of Canons. This stone marks the borders of the Stifts forest, state forest, and city forest. Hiking trip to Humbergturm (Humberg Tower)Trenches were dug down the valley and a defensive fort was built during the battle of Kaiserslautern in 1793 to 1796 between Prussia and France. Here you will also find a comfortable seating area for a short break, especially if you are hiking with children. A bit of an incline awaits on your final stretch to Humbergturm. Route signs are on the trees to make it easier to find your way through the forest.

Once you have made it to the top, the walk up the hill is quickly forgotten. There is a big field by the tower that is a great place for kids or your four-legged friend to play catch, definitely a good reason to bring some outdoor games with you. Once you have made the 162 step climb up to the breezy observation deck, you are able to look over Kaiserslautern and surrounding areas. The way back to Bremerhof is clearly marked. The hike as described here took approximately two hours to complete. As a bonus, the Humbergturm adventure is great for spring, summer, fall and winter. Remember: there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing!
