Lt. Gen. Timothy M. Ray, 3rd Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony and highlighted the achievements of the 86 AW under the command of Thomas. One of the successes Ray highlighted was the role the wing played in supporting the

A farewell to Mighty 86th

COMMENTARY

by Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas 86th Airlift Wing commander When you take command of a unit or installation, you expect to personally grow; you expect the experience to broaden your perspective and offer opportunities to build your leadership skills. You do not always expect the units and missions to grow. Since I took command in June, 2015, the Kaiserslautern Military Community and Team Ramstein have grown and evolved immensely — and I couldn’t be prouder of all we’ve accomplished together. We welcomed Lajes Field and the 65th Air Base Group to the 86th Airlift Wing. We temporarily brought U.S. civilians from Incirlik Air Base into our community as they were ordered to depart due to serious force protection concerns. We added major new joint exercises such as SWIFT RESPONSE that demonstrate the resolve and capability of our forces to respond to aggression and reassure allies. We continue to grow as the Mighty 86th plans for the future absorption of the 100th Air Refueling Wing’s KC-135 Stratotankers and as the construction of the new medical center progresses just outside Ramstein’s east gate. It has been a dynamic and transformative year for the Mighty 86th and Team Ramstein. Our success has come via teamwork, dedication and camaraderie. My experience over the past 14 months reaffirms the absolutely critical role played by Ramstein Air Base and the AF installations of the KMC in U.S. and NATO security and defense policy. Some may know that I had previously served as the 86th Operations Group commander from 2007 to 2009; this was an incredibly important place then, and the intervening 7 years have simply added to the significance. Our missions here are of great consequence, and many rely upon our success to, in turn, enable them to achieve their own success. We’ve sought to stay ahead of change by planning for the future and putting those plans into action. The combined effects of the KC-135 transfer to the 86th, the relocation of the medical center to Rhine Ordnance Barracks and a major host nation road infrastructure project at the A6/Einsiedlerhof interchange — all coming to fruition in about the 2020 to 2022 timeframe — drive an imperative to assess and analyze the impacts to our missions and community so that timely adjustments can be made in both. We’ve

sought to revitalize our installation resilience in the event of conventional air attack — a potential reality in the changed European security environment post-2014. We’ve sought to focus our valuable, but limited, resources on our highest priorities for processes and facilities related to mission execution and community support. But it was at the tactical level that I really got to see what Team Ramstein is all about and who we really are as the Mighty 86th. Chief Master Sgt. Phil Easton and I, while he was the 86 AW command chief, spent a great deal of time with our Airmen. We donned bunker gear and learned how our firefighters train to respond to emergencies on our flightline, ensuring the safety of the installation. We went on patrol with the 86th Security Forces Squadron and 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, seeing how our vigilant defenders safeguard our installation, our Airmen and our communities. We turned wrenches with 86th Maintenance Group Airmen and got our boots dirty while helping them keep our birds up in the air. We flew with the pilots, loadmasters and aeromedical evacuation crews of the 86th Operations Group as they

put our aircraft into action. We cleaned sewers and power-washed sidewalks with the 86th Civil Engineering Group, seeing what it took to keep our installation working and clean. We delivered furnishings management office furniture, conducted health inspections at our base restaurants and pitched mail at the Northside Post Office. It was awesome! It was side by side with Team Ramstein Airmen that we saw how the mission gets done. We witnessed the hard work and dedication of Airmen of all types — military, U.S. civilian and local national civilian. Together, we’ve succeeded in the mission, become better and taken care of one another. As I depart, all I ask is that you maintain and build upon the excellence you’ve displayed every day of my 14 months in command. It’s been a pleasure to again be one of you — working side by side — 86th Airlift Wing Airmen who make success a daily reality in the KMC, across Europe and Africa, and beyond. Know that I will admire you from afar with pride and excitement. Keep up the teamwork and I wish you all the best for continued success!

Ramstein Airmen learn Krav Maga, self-defense Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 435th Security Forces Squadron hosted a Krav Maga training course Aug. 1 through 8 on Ramstein. This is the third year they’ve organized the event. The weeklong course was modified from a basic selfdefense system of redirecting, controlling and attacking. “When under attack, people tend to lose the ability to use cognitive reasoning,” said Michael Davis, Krav Maga instructor. “Not only will they learn these basic principles that turn into a life-saving system, but they will be learning the basic techniques under stress.” Even though a majority of the 26 students who took part in the course were security forces members and are familiar with self-defense, many of them gained something from the course. “I think it’s amazing to learn new tactics to be able to defend yourself against an attack,” said Master Sgt. Anthony Sanchez, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron NCO in charge of training. “It’s a useful tool to not only protect yourself, but it’s great to get this training so that we can pass it down to other members.” new cc, from Page 1

and to get all those cards and letters saying, ‘thank you for taking care of us,’ that’s the stuff that makes us a great Air Force. Thank you so much for what you’ve done.” Thomas thanked the Airmen of the 86 AW for their service during his time in command and expressed excitement for starting a new chapter in his career. ”You have gotten the mission done. You have led our Airmen,” Thomas said. “You have made a difference every day, well done.” Moore expressed his deep appreciation for the wing’s partnership with the local German community.

Master Sgt. Anthony Sanchez, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron NCO in charge of training, holds Staff Sgt. LaDonna Winston, 435th Security Forces Squadron ground regional training center instructor, in a tight grip Aug. 4 on Ramstein. During the course, students practiced different techniques to be better prepared for an attack.

Students spent the week pushing themselves even when exhaustion hit its peak, sweating through the exercises and learning the techniques. Not all the Airmen participating were defenders; other service members from different jobs

attended as well. “I think that we have a responsibility to provide our teammates with the tools to defend themselves physically and mentally,” said Master Sgt. Mark Tilsher, 86th Force Support Squadron Ramstein Airman Leadership School

commandant. “If Airmen have the tools to defend themselves, they’re more likely to stand up when they see something they know isn’t right, which is ultimately what we ask them to do — be good bystanders.” This type of training

empowers the class to protect themselves and to be good wingmen. Once you take away that fear of being attacked, the Airman’s potential is unlimited, Tilsher said. Airmen interested in participating in future courses should contact the 435 SFS.

“These are turbulent times, and our world is changing in ways that we may not care for. Our collective future is anything but certain,” Moore said. “We have all been entrusted with the responsibility for sustaining and preserving, for our children and grandchildren, the ideals upon which our nations were founded. This to be sure is a difficult task, and lesser people might shrink from it. “We, however, will not,” Moore continued, speaking in German to an audience that contained dozens of community partners and host nation military officials. “We will stand side by side and face whatever challenges stand in our way, and I know that no

matter what obstacle we will encounter, together we will be victorious.” Ray expressed how pleased he was to have the Moore family, to include his wife, Kristin, and son, Mitchell, join the wing. “The 86th AW is one of the most important wings in the U.S. Air Force, and because of that, we bring only the very best leaders,” Ray said. “Rest assured, we bring you another great leader. We certainly hope your time here at Ramstein is as good as it is for all of us.” Although the commander of the 86 AW has changed, the work continues, Moore said. “(Brig. Gen.) Thomas

demanded a great deal from you, and I will ask no less,” Moore said. “In return, I pledge to you to give my all every day, to procure for you and to provide for you the resources needed to ensure success.

“There can be no group of Airmen in the entire world that we would rather serve than you,” Moore continued. “Our Air Force and our nation are counting on us, and together we’ll deliver. Now let’s get to work.”

Media-ting 435 CRS on media training

Capt. Henry Howard, 435th Contingency Response Squadron aircraft maintenance flight commander, participates in a mock interview with 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs personnel Aug. 4 on Ramstein. The interview was part of a media training event that prepared Airmen for interviews by media personnel.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Personnel from the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs office hosted a media training event for the 435th Contingency Response Squadron during a Mission Planners Course Aug. 4 on Ramstein. The training prepared Airmen from the 435 CRS for interviews with the press by having them participate in mock interviews and watching the taped answers afterward. “In public affairs, we often meet with different organizations to teach them what we do and how they should

engage with the media,” said Kelly Sanders, 86 AW Public Affairs chief of media operations. According to Sanders, the 435 CRS’ robust mission draws external media attention, thus creating the idea for them to train on talking with the press. “We want to ensure they feel confident and have the tools to be credible spokespeople if a media opportunity arises, wherever their missions take them,” Sanders said. The media training prepared Airmen for interviews with the press by making them aware of common nuances in areas such as body posture, speech volume and delivering

the message of the U.S. Air Force mission. “Media is our biggest conduit to external audiences, and we owe it to the American taxpayers to engage with the media and provide information about what the Air Force is doing,” Sanders said. “It isn’t always comfortable to be on camera, so we like to give Airmen a taste of what that feels like so it isn’t as intimidating when it happens in the real world.” According to Tech. Sgt. Joshua Bell, 421st Combat Training Squadron course director of the Mission Planners Course, Joint Base McGuireDix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, the train-

ing was well-received by Airmen participating in the media course after they learned what they needed to be aware of the most in an interview. “The biggest thing the course wants Airmen to take away is self-awareness,” Bell said. “Most Airmen have no clue how they are going to react when they have a camera in their face. We want to show them what they look and sound like.” Telling the Air Force story to media is an important aspect not only with the 86 AW/PA or 435 CRS but with all of Team Ramstein. If you have any questions in regards to this, contact the 86th Airlift Wing media office at 480-2458 or 06371-47-2458.

KMC counselors sharpen skills, gain knowledge at marriage counseling workshop Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Chaplains, family advocates, counselors and mental health workers from around the KMC attended a marriage counseling workshop Aug. 5 on Ramstein. Approximately 40 helping agency members took part in a workshop hosted by the Ramstein chapel community to gain additional knowledge and improve their ability to help military members seeking marital advice. Tech. Sgt. Jessica Osgood, 86th Medical Operations Squadron NCO in charge of mental health, said she was more motivated to do her job thanks to the knowledge she gained during the workshop. “(I feel) more inspired because there are more tools I can use when dealing with families and military members,” Osgood said. “(The speaker) gave us a lot of different techniques, advice and good ideas to encourage military families.” Gary Chapman, marriage counselor, was the guest speaker at the event. Some topics Chapman discussed

were how different people express and receive love, common misunderstandings between spouses and how spouses can improve communication and mitigate misunderstandings. “The deepest emotional

need we have as humans is the need to feel the love of the significant people in our lives,” Chapman said. “In fact, if we do feel loved then life is pretty good, but if we don’t feel loved by the significant people in our lives

then life can be pretty dark.” Chaplain (Capt.) Kristin Swenson, 86th Airlift Wing and event coordinator, expressed her confidence that the participants were given helpful tools for counseling.

A participant asks Gary Chapman a question during a marriage counseling workshop Aug. 5 on Ramstein. The workshop was designed to help chaplains, counselors and other helping agency members advise military members concerning marriage issues.

“They’re leaving with resources that they can use for their own study or preparation for counseling,” Swenson said. The participants had the opportunity to have face-toface dialogue with Chapman, which Swenson believes further added to their knowledge for counseling couples. Although Chapman only held the workshop for one day, Swenson believes the participants will be able to put his teaching to good use. “In a way, he’s kind of like a force multiplier,” Swenson said. “He can’t be here every day to work with every couple on this base. The fact that he’s here to equip us who are here day in and day out will multiply his impact that much more. “As couples come to see us for counseling … they get the benefit of (Chapman) through us,” Swenson continued. As Chapman concluded his speaking engagements at Ramstein, the chaplains, counselors and members of various helping agencies returned to their units with more power to help the couples of the KMC strengthen their relationships.

Season Salmon with lemon juice, salt, pepper and thyme. Place each salmon filet in a piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle each piece with olive oil. Close foil and place on medium heat grill. Cook for 3 minutes on both sides. What a delicious meal!

USAREUR’s best warriors unveiled after intense competition

Photos by Staff Sgt. Frank Brown Jr.

First Lt. Kendall Ward, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) and 2016 Best Officer Warrior, grapples with 1st Lt. Ethan Klausner, 2nd Cavalry Regiment and category runner-up, during a combatives tournament Aug. 11, the final day of the European Best Warrior Competition, at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany. The U.S. Army Europe and 21st Theater Sustainment Command senior enlisted leaders unveiled the region’s Best Warriors during an award ceremony held later in the day at the Tower Barracks Physical Fitness Center.

by Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — The U.S. Army Europe and 21st Theater Sustainment Command senior enlisted leaders unveiled the region’s top troops as the 2016 European Best Warrior Competition reached a thrilling climax before an enthusiastic audience of over 200 Soldiers, leaders and distinguished visitors Aug. 11 at the Tower Barracks Physical Fitness Center, Grafenwoehr. First Lt. Kendall Ward, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), captured top honors among officers. Staff Sgt. Ethan Rodgers, 7th Army Training Command, outlasted eight other noncommissioned officers to claim the NCO crown. Spc. Daniel Guenther, 7th ATC, topped five other troops to earn superlative Soldier honors in a sensational showing for the home-station training command. Conquering enlisted candidates earned not only continental bragging rights but also an opportunity to represent USAREUR during the Department of the Army Best Warrior Competition slated for Sept. 26 to Oct. 3 at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. The junior officer competition culminates at command level.

“I’m tremendously excited to represent USAREUR, my brigade and my battalion at this level,” said Ward, a platoon leader who serves with the Vicenza, Italy-based 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment. “I need more than two hands to count the great officers who could’ve been selected and performed just as well. It’s an honor and a privilege to represent our brigade and our Soldiers across Italy in this event.” The Hohenfels, Germany-based 7th ATC competitors performed exceptionally well on their home training turf. “I was surprised when they announced my name,” said Guenther, a fire team leader with 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. “You really didn’t know who would win until the very end. The unit has been training me nonstop the last two months to get ready. They’ve done a great job helping Staff Sgt. Rodgers and I prepare, so I feel pretty good about our prospects at the DA competition.” “It’s been a thrilling experience to test my mettle against other great NCOs across Army Europe,” added Rodgers, a weapons squad leader with the 1-4th Infantry. “We’re going to study hard, train hard and come out to win.” The competitors endured a week of remorseless activity that strained stamina, will and nerves, not to men-

tion muscles and limbs, to their breaking point. The weary benefited from little rest, less sleep and practically no respite during waking hours from a relentless sequence of competitive tasks beginning shortly after their arrival at Camp Aachen. The first two days included such events as uniform inspections, checks and administrative activities, written tests, an Army Physical Fitness Test, an obstacle course, urban combat lanes, marksmanship, medical evacuation and land navigation. The final day of the competition began with a grueling 12-mile ruck march and culmi-

nated with a combatives tournament. Organizers described the competition as deliberately comprehensive, even intentionally overwhelming. “The competition tests every possible Soldier quality,” said Master Sgt. Patrick Superales, 21st TSC headquarters and lead event organizer. “The candidates have to be physically fit. They have to be proficient in the full range of Soldier skills. They have to know policy, regulations and doctrine. They have to know and live the Army Values. It takes much more than strength and endurance, although that’s a prerequisite. When we say ‘Best Warrior’ it encompasses everything; it means being the very best of Soldiers and leaders in every way, across the board.” Command Sgt. Maj. Sheryl Lyon, USAREUR and European Best Warrior Competition senior enlisted leader, described the event as a triumph not only for candidates but also for the organizations that developed them. “These competitors didn’t get here by themselves,” Lyon said. “They were recommended by their organizations. They had supervisors who encouraged them. They had trainers and mentors who prepared them. They had fellow Soldiers and families who encouraged them. It’s a team effort that says a lot about not only the competitors but the organizations that brought them here.” Rodgers and Guenther will need all the pride, determination, stamina and skill, not to mention luck, they can muster when they face off against 10 champions from an equal number of commands and direct reporting units across the Army at the end of September. DA organizers choose from 27 potential evaluated events without prior notice, forcing candidates to prepare diligently for all of them.

Staff Sgt. Andrew MacKenzie, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, trudges toward the finish line after completing a grueling 12-mile foot march Aug. 11, the final day European Best Warrior Competition, at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany.
