Amul has to go off air with frozen dessert advt: Bombay HC storyline and manner of commercial, it can be clearly seen that message that is sought to be given is that all frozen desserts contain vanaspati/ vegetable oil and all frozen desserts are necessarily unhealthy and harmful and should not be purchased and consumed.”

I

n an amnesty to Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), manufacturer of Kwality Walls icecream and frozen desserts, the Bombay High Court restrained Amul from airing an icecream commercial. Justice S J Kathwalla allowed application filed by HUL seeking injunction against the advertisement of Amul which claimed HUL ice-creams where frozen desserts made out of vegetable oil and hence not safe to consume. Justice Kathawalla said, “I have considered the content, intent of the commercial, manner and storyline of the commercial and message sought to be conveyed by TVC in totality and it has become crystal clear that the same are shown with sole intention of disparaging the entire category of frozen desserts.” The court said in its 87-page judgment, “from the

The court noted that commercials are being televised repeatedly and hence disseminating wrong information and creating confusion among viewers. The court also refused to stay its order and said it cannot allow Amul to indulge in negative campaigning against its rival companies. Senior counsel Ravi Kadam appearing for Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd, maker of Amul ice-creams had defended the commercial and said that the ad doesn’t denigrate HUL’s frozen desserts. He said the ad was merely informative as it informed society and consumers that frozen desserts contain vegetable oil — Vanaspati oil. HUL’s counsel Virag Tulzapurkar said the ad specifically mentions vanaspati in Hindi while other parts of the ad are in English and it is so done to target a larger audience in disparaging its frozen dessert products.

Frozen desserts by Coca-Cola Amul appealed to revoke ban to enter Indian market soon on ice cream ads

C

oca-Cola shall introduce frozen desserts in India soon as the major beverage player intends to expand their portfolio beyond carbonated drinks into fruit-based and healthier choices. Company officials aware of the latest development said, “The new product will be available in the next three months, and initially will be sold in institutional formats such as movie theatres, and not as retail packs. The company will also put fruit chunks in Maaza and Minute Maid to make the drinks healthier. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation that promotes Amul brand is the largest maker of ice cream and frozen desserts with a 17 per cent market share, followed by HUL with about 10 per cent. More refrigeration facilities will also enhance product availability in several categories, with ice cream and frozen desserts set to be amongst the fastest expanding in the next five

years. Value will be enhanced by an upmarket shift in urban demand underpinned by rising consumer health-consciousness and an increasing emphasis on convenience. As per Euromonitor International, this segment is anticipated to reach Rs 17,000 crore in sales by 2021. President of Coca-Cola India, T Krishnakumar announced it will invest Rs 11,000 crore in creating an agriculturefocused ecosystem, food processing units and sourcing that will help introduce a slew of innovative products in the fruit-based categories within the next 5 years. The company has a similar product under the Perfect Fruit brand in Australia and is sold by Coca-Cola Amatil, where Krishnakumar had been a non-executive director. Coca-Cola did not share other details stating that many innovations in the company are carried out in collaboration with bottling and business partners.

The tussle between two well-known brands in the industry just got messier after Amul has put forth a petition to Bombay High Court to revoke the ban on their ice cream ads. After last month, Bombay HC verdict, Amul had to refrain from airing the ‘controversial’ ice cream advt. that made quite a noise in the ice cream industry. Challenging a month-old order in its tussle with HUL, Amul placed an appeal to bench of the Bombay HC regarding virtual freeze on airing its ice cream commercial.

Amul's counsel informed appeal bench of Justices S S Khemkar and M S Sonak that the ‘June order was like a blanket ban’. Without admitting to any wrongdoing by Amul, the order could have sought omission of any portion being objected to. “Amul ice cream ad doesn't belittle HUL's frozen desserts, but merely informs consumers that frozen desserts contain vanaspati tel. There is nothing wrong in using the word vanaspati tel, he said. As defined by Oxford dictionary, Vanaspati tel means vegetable oil.

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) better known as Amul is a marketing giant with an annual turnover of over $4 billion. The company has filed a petition against the June 16 order of single judge, Justice S J Kathawalla of the Bombay HC. He pulled two of Amul's ads off air seeking to malign or disparage a rival manufacturer's product. Competitor HUL- a fast moving consumer goods giant sued Amul for Rs 10 crore, claiming the TV commercial demeaned its Kwality Wall's frozen desserts. Former state advocate general, Ravi Kadam -

HUL counsel Biren Saraf said the single judge had found that the entire ad campaign was ‘actuated by malice’. The visuals' representation indicates that the frozen dessert is a ‘cupful of vanaspati and nothing else. It is trying to exploit vulnerable minds of parents.’ Amul and HUL will have the next hearing on August 21, the date scheduled to decide on the appeal and seeking relief. Meanwhile, the Amul ads remain off air.

Is frozen dessert good or bad?

H

industan Unilever that had filed a case in the Bombay High Court against the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation successfully obtained an injunction against an advertisement for Amul ice cream which disparaged frozen desserts.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) already has categorized ice-creams under ‘dairy based desserts/confections’, further categorized as plain, medium fat and low fat depending on the percentage of total solids, milk fat and milk protein used. The food regulator defines ‘frozen dessert/frozen confection’ as a product obtained by freezing a pasteurized mix prepared with milk fat and/or edible vegetable oils and fat. The milk fat is used in such dessert for freezing.

Amul's ad had said that people should eat real ice cream made from milk, rather than frozen dessert made from ‘vanaspati’. The court said the ad was ‘guilty of disparaging a rival product’ -- Unilever's Kwality Walls, which is a leader in frozen desserts. The battle between ice-cream and frozen dessert makers comes in during summer all the time and usually consumers are unaware about the difference. But with the ad it has become very difficult to convince people that companies like Vadilal, Havmor and HUL make ice-cream and not frozen dessert. So the companies have taken the approach to educate the consumers by pointing them to the differentiation which the government of India has made.

According to ice-cream manufacturers, frozen desserts have captured a market share of 40 per cent of the Rs 1,800 crore markets with a growth of approximately 10-12 per cent every year. But according to health experts, frozen desserts have more trans-fat as compared to ice-creams. "Tran’s fatty acids are not good and they suggest icecreams are better than frozen desserts. Companies which manufacture frozen dessert said awareness should be raised on the virtues of vegetable oil compared to those of dairy fat. They also said that the cooking medium in an Indian house remains vegetable oil or mustard oil. This is the same ingredient that goes into the making of frozen dessert. The fact remains that nobody uses 'vanaspati' in frozen dessert. Well at the end of the day is frozen dessert a bad thing? No, it's not a bad thing, but there are differences. Importantly, a consumer has a right to know.

Little Lion expands offerings beyond ice cream in USA They ordered a restaurant-grade waffle maker and started serving their crispy, crunchy waffles topped with two scoops of homemade ice cream and fruit compote made from whatever fruit was in season at local farms. It’s been strawberries most of the summer and it’s time for blackberries.

L

ittle Lion Ice Cream owners Jubilee and Ian Miller take their ice cream cart to several events which take place in morning. People are hesitant to eat a bunch of ice cream before noon. So after several brainstorming sessions with creative minds at Old Town Farmers’ Market, the couple came up with a crunchy idea that has intensified business pace in the past few months. Little Lion Ice Cream, a homemade ice cream business that Miller’s started in March 2016, now is in demand for its waffles. One can get these every Saturday morning at the Old Town Farmer’s Market and every Friday and Sunday morning in front of the Espresso to Go Go’s location inside The Lux, 120 E. First St. Jubilee Miller said on Father’s Day, the waffle crowds were crazy and waffles were going well. Little Lion Ice Cream started with one cart but added a second one early this year. The Millers also are working on opening a brick and mortar store.

Millers realized that their fans are craving for waffles all hours of the day, not just breakfast. “You can have it in the evening or in the morning. They’re just perfect any time of the day” Jubilee Miller said. People can order the waffles topped with organic maple syrup only or with ice cream and compote. During evening hours, homemade chocolate syrup also is an option. Jubilee Miller said the couple has been surprised by success of the waffles. “I had one at the Strawberries & Art Festival in Harper and it was out-of-this-world good. Because they’re going so well and people love them so much, we’re going to try to do waffles probably at half our events if not more.”

South-based ice cream brand Dairy Day launched GST candy series

T

he acronym ‘GST’ in present context stands for “Goods and Service Tax”, a leading South Indian ice-cream brand, Dairy Day has made use of the GST launch with the release of their latest flavors that’s Guava, Strawberry and Tamarind (in short GST) candies. Chief Finance

Officer, Saurabh Kasat said that the company has sold over one million GST series candies since the launch. Dairy Day entered in manufacture of fruit candies last year with the launch of pineapple candies. “This was made available in select towns. The trials proved encouraging, so we decided to add more flavours. The turnover of the company is around Rs. 150 crore at present. We are targeting to reach Rs. 500 crore in the next three-four years by strengthening our base and product line across the entire South.”

Established in 2002, today the company manufactures and supplies over 30 ice-cream flavours in formats such as cup, cone, stick, tubs, and novelties. The production capacity of the plant is 1.2 lakh litres per day. “To augment production and strengthen our marketing efforts, we are planning to invest Rs.50 crore over the next 12 months. Motilal Oswal – private equity fund has made an investment of Rs.110 crore in the company,” Kasat added. Whether the company is interested for inorganic growth, he said “We don't have any acquisition plans in the near term. However, we will keep the option open and look for interesting opportunities to grow.” Regarding the GST in India, Kasat said, “Contrary to many sectors getting affected negatively on product price points, the Goods and Services Tax has been positive for us. The rate on ice-cream is 18 per cent, but the various benefits and input tax credit available on most taxes in the GST regime will help bring down the prices. We have taken a call to pass on the benefit to the customer. Now, we can centralise our distribution and keep warehouses only when it makes business sense.”

et another season for ice cream industry is over and once again industry has witnessed double digit growth. According to big players their average growth is 25 per cent and for overall industry not less than 20 per cent. Many new flavours are introduced this season once again. The major flavour of the season was the parlours, the real growth engine of the ice cream industry at the moment. Companies like Havmor, Scoops, Pabrai’s, Top n town, Hatsun Agro, Naturals and many more are investing hugely in parlours. New concepts of parlours with international level ambience are giving a whole new dimension to the industry. Huber & Holly a new concept with elite interiors and never been used flavours are showing new ways to the industry. After the first flagship parlour in Ahmedabad, Havmor is planning more in a couple of metros and semi metros very soon. On the other hand, Cream Stone concept by Scoops is a big hit. In south India, their reach is in almost every major city, they just opened a new territory in Indore in central India with one Parlour. The story behind success is once again the ambience and new concept for the customer which attracts them. People are trying new things and if their trials are having tasty ending they will stick to it for a long time. When Naturals parlours was launched by Kamath more than a decade ago, no one imagined that this company will reach Rs 100 cr turn-over via only parlours and retails sales through their counters in parlours only. Naturals has shown a new way to the Indian ice cream industry which they never experimented earlier. Top n Town from Bhopal has also started expanding their reach and now has couple of hundred outlets in Mumbai only. They also have a number of parlours across Mumbai and suburbs. Similarly, Apsara yet another player from Mumbai is expanding beyond state boundaries in Bangalore. Apsara has also taken the same route of specialised flavours and comfortable ambience for the customers. Consumption in India is growing and providing opportunities to the allied segments to increase their services to the industry. In the last one decade ,import of new-technologies related to ice creams has tripled in India. Companies like Tetrapak, Gram, Technogel, Vojta and Nanging Puyuan have doubled their imports. You will agree, most discussed flavour of the season was GST. Ice cream industry has been kept at 18% slab for GST. According to the industry pundits it is little higher. They say that 12 per cent rate of GST would have been better for an industry which has just started taking shape. Size of the ice cream industry is 20 times smaller than it’s mother, the dairy industry. Finance ministry like other industry has kept dairy products in almost all the GST slabs from zero to 28 per cent. Ice cream has been unlucky on this front. The major jolt came for the smaller and seasonal manufacturers, now they won’t be able to take benefit of composition scheme. Ice cream is one of only three industries, Cigartte, Gutka-Pan Masala are the two others who will not get the benefit. This means manufacturers who are smaller or bigger all will have to pay same rate of GST. In the other segments that are qualified in composition scheme they will have to register with GST and if their turnover is less than 75 lakhs they will give GST @ 2% only. On these smaller manufacturers are upset and led some social media and road agitations in Delhi. This was a clear step-motherly treatment with this industry. Why only ice cream is kept in this category with two other products which are proven hazardous for the consumers? Do they consider ice cream in the same category of un-healthy products? These are some questions ice cream industry is asking from the government!!

I

ce-cream industry has seen an evolution wherein this segment has grown right from shape, form, consumer perception to the products and services being offered. Though initially ice-cream considered as an indulgent consumable item in the past, has now reached the stage wherein it’s happily perceived as a snack option by many. Thanks to the increasing disposable incomes and greater flexible expenditure, there is rise in the ratio of ice cream consumption in different regions and flavors. The change in consumers’ perception has allowed this category to grow in volume. Icecream market has been growing at a dynamic CAGR of 20 per cent. Since ice-cream business is volume-driven, the price shift is widely distributed and does not majorly pinch the consumers monetarily. However, this provides an opportunity for frozen yoghurt and gelato brands to explore the untapped market by educating consumers on merits of their products as well as expand their manufacturing and distribution capabilities. Hence to increase their market share, ice-cream manufacturers need to optimize their production systems, packaging technologies and cold chain management, ensure compliance with quality standards and get their marketing strategies right. To attract customers, the new mantra followed by ice cream companies is brand adoption of innovation through offers of better and unique taste variants matched by rising aspirations of consumers and their will to pay a premium. Another innovation is introduction of diet-friendly ice creams as part of brands’ premium range, such as low-fat and sugar-free ice cream as well as ice cream cakes. The word ‘stressed’ is so well arranged that when spelt backwards it becomes ‘desserts’! In India, the festival season begins in August/September with Ganesh Chathurthi, the elephant-headed Hindu god of good luck, and Onam, the harvest festival popularly celebrated in Kerala. In October is Navaratri, dedicated to Hindu deity, Durga, and Dussehra, the triumph celebration of good over evil. Festival of lights and fireworks is Diwali, and in the month of December, Christmas is an important event celebrated by Christians all over. Another festival celebrated by Hindu community is Holi, the time of colours and enjoyment that commonly falls in the month of March. For Muslims, the most important religious occasion is Eid, a joyous event for them as they pray for happiness, wellbeing, and peace for all. The sales of ice cream are peak during summer and companies now

focus on selling gift packs during festival time as many people are in a cheerful mood to celebrate the occasion. Since ice cream is synonymous to sweetness, there is a great demand for ice creams during festivals in India. Ice cream industry receives great response Director of Kamath Ourtimes ice cream Pvt Ltd, Girish Pai said “Most of the customers prefer novelty items during ice creams and at Naturals we have festive flavours like say for Christmas we have Cherry Berry & Berry bite, for Diwali we have Shahi Anjeer & Shrikhand, for Holi we have Thandai and for Ganesh Utsav we have Prasadam.” Indeed during happy moments and celebratory days, people want to share and express their happiness and hence often visit ice cream parlours after sumptuous dinner. The ice cream industry receives a definitive uptake of stock lifting during festival seasons. Partner at Pabrai’s Fresh and Naturelle Ice Cream, Kunal Pabrai said, “Festivals are a time of celebrations with family and friends and in India; sweet desserts like ice cream are very popular with customers. The level of sales frequently depends on the customer's innate historical preferences along with a tendency to buy something with the theme of the festival.” For Neeraj Tahalani, Director of Golden Dairy products Pvt. Ltd has observed that the sales

during festival season of Dusserra, Holi and Eid in Patna region picks up nearly by 20 to 25 per cent. Nagpur-based, Jain Ice Cream- Marketing Head, Mayank Rampuria believes that the ice cream industry receives positive response during festivals and other major occasions. Around the festive time, there are many events that lead to increase in the demand of ice cream. “People get time to go out with their families and celebrate.

Festive Charm

High during Festive Season! is a great mix with the events and occasions.” Growth rate achieved during festive season When there is an increase of sales of ice cream during festival time, it eventually leads to positive sales charts of several ice cream companies. Depending on the current profits, companies plan further course of action for the next fiscal. Pai clarified that festive flavour followed post monsoon achieve around 20-25 per cent growth in revenue. “This time we are aiming at 40 per cent growth”. Whereas Pabrai feels that overall branded segment of the ice cream industry grew by 18% last year. “During the same period, our company clocked a growth of 25 per cent year-onyear. We hope to step up the pace of expansion this year.”

Outings with friends become very common during festivals and other occasions. Thus, festivals and other major occasions (friendship's day, wedding seasons, etc) generate a very positive response for the ice cream industry as the demand for ice cream increases and so does the consumption.” Festivals always bring in additional business in ice-cream industry since festivals spread joy and positivity in people. Proprietor of Ideal Icecream, Mukund Kamath said happiness and icecream always go together since icecream is that one product people eat often when they are happy. Plus, now-a-days parties are incomplete without it. But the spike is area specific for example Diwali brings more business in North compared to South India, Durga Pooja in western India and Onam in southern India. However during Ramadan fasting times sales comes down across the industry. National Coordinator of Fun India Dairy, Niketan Verma said “similar to other industries and services, the ice cream industry also receives significant boost during festivals and other major occasions such as national holidays etc. People turn up in higher than usual number as ice cream suits perfectly as a fine dessert which they can serve and share directly without any preparation saving them precious time which they can spend in enjoying the occasion with family and friends instead.” Shashi Nath Mishra, AGM Sales of Adani Wilmar said the season of ice cream industry starts in February and the

festival Holi falls at the beginning of this season. The industry registers a spurt in demand during Ganesh Utsav in Maharashtra & Gujarat, Durga Pooja in Eastern India and Diwali and Christmas across the country. Festive season gives a small blip in demand during off season. Ice cream charm during festivals The festive season brings with it a positive aura that keeps people in a celebratory mode. What better time than to eat ice cream with the whole family sitting together and enjoying. Pai feels that festivals always give a boost for sale and one is

able to design marketing strategy appropriately. Whereas Pabrai commented that festivals are a time of celebrations with family and friends. “Nothing emotionally connects with consumers with regards to celebrations as much as sweet desserts do, specifically ice creams. With most of India having day temperatures above 20 degrees celsius, India is a prime market for continued increased consumption of cold desserts, particularly ice creams in their various flavours and formats.” Often because of hectic schedules and professional commitments, people are unable to devote time for families, hence the several religious occasions become an important time for them for social/ family gatherings. Festivals become the perfect time for food & beverage, ice cream companies to strike market with their latest products. Tahalani stated that customer movement is high in the market, further resulting in higher sales of eatable items. The ice cream industry does bloom during festivals and major other occasions. The demand of ice cream increases during these periods. Rampuria added that festivals and other occasions break the monotony of the ice cream industry. At times, demand of festive season leads to innovations of varied forms of ice cream. Therefore festivals and other major occasions are important for the ice cream industry as they lead to increase in sales as well as innovations. Mishra stated that many Indian festivals falls during off season of this industry and provide small windows to push its volume. Other than festivals, marriage season has major impact on demand. Industry gets good demand of frozen dessert from hotels and catering business. Consumer spending is always good for any industry and during festivals consumer tends to spend more. Kamath believes that festivals play a major role in icecream industry and it brings more business even in dull seasons like rainy season that is a very big plus point for the industry. “Icecream runs under full capacity in summer season so festivals play an important role in other seasons. Not only big festivals play a role in the industry, there are regional festivals like car festival and melas that happen almost on daily basis in different areas. This helps in selling novelty items which fetches more profits.” Verma agreed on the similar note regarding the key role that Indian festivals play for the ice cream industry. He said, “Festivities are good for all business activities especially for us, as being a part of F&B industry. These are the times which people celebrate and we happen to make a product which

In the Northern region, the Patna-based Golden Dairy products Pvt. Ltd receive nearly 40 per cent growth during Dusserra and during other festivals like Eid and Holi it is about 20 per cent. Northern India which is the biggest market is still showing good demand despite of monsoon reaching midway of its season. Mishra further added that “the industry has grown by 20 per cent this year though we have grown by more than 30 per cent. Early monsoon has impacted demand in western parts of the country.” Down in South, Mangalore-based Ideal ice cream growth per cent usually ranges from 20 to 50 per cent depending on the festivals. “In our case Dussera( Durga Puja) we do a sales increase of around 50 per cent and during Christmas time we do a sales increase around 40 per cent”, Kamath said. Hence ice cream sales growth is varied as per different areas/regions festival time. In North, it is evident that Holi, Diwali, and Eid time ice cream brands receive more sales as compared off-season. Verma anticipates that the company’s growth per cent to be around 15 to 20 per cent. The same reflects in accordance, when it comes to revenue per say. There is a striking point to note this year, as the situation is different with demonetization and GST

impact on the industry. Demonetization process led to currency crisis which resulted in decrease of the sales. Rampuria said that “sales dropped down by almost 20 per cent. People reduced spending on premium and expensive products of ice cream industry because of demonetization. GST hype has reduced the sales at present, but they do increase around the festivals and major occasions for some duration.” Flavors that enjoy high consumption during festivities There are several popular flavors that are enjoyed by the patrons. The ice cream market in India is set to soar high with the introduction of distinct flavors and premium brands. Also, now-a-days people are

21

health-conscious and hence ice cream companies have launched flavors that perfectly suit the needs of this category. At Naturals, the maximum consumption is of tender coconut, sitaphal and kesar pista besides festive flavours. Flavours like rabri malai, rose, almond and nolen gur amongst a host of other flavours that are popular at Pabrai’s Fresh and Naturelle Ice Cream. Pabrai quoted that “usually we see an increased uptake of Indian flavours during festive seasons. There has also been an increased appreciation for sugarfree range of ice creams that we manufacture at Pabrai's. Sugar intake has become an increasingly sensitive issue with consumers hence we see a greater number of consumers preferring sugar free desserts compared to their sugar-contained counterparts.” In Patna, Tahalani’s company sees an impulsive consumption of cones, IML cups, Kulfi and sundaes. Based on market research, it has been observed that ice cream sales depend on impulsive behavior of consumers and nature of festive season. Verma agrees on the aforementioned

statement, he said that candy and cones are usually preferred during Ganesh Chaturthi as people gather in large numbers and are on the move as part of the festivities; so it's easier to carry and consume them. Similarly, when it comes to Diwali, family packs are hot favourites. People stay at home to welcome guests and family packs suits the same perfectly. Even Kamath has to shed light on the same point; it is festival specific like during Christmas time Vanilla Icecream sales are more. During melas and regional temple/church/ mosque feasts more of novelties like chocobar, cones and dolly etc are sold. During festivals like Ramzan / Diwali, tubs and party packs sell more since icecream is used as a gift item as well as for home use. Festive seasons often lead to consumption and

appreciation of new flavors. Nevertheless, on a concluding note, Rampuria adds that the consumption of flavors like vanilla and choco-chips are very high. These flavors are classic and all time favorites. Their consumption during festivals and major occasions increases because they are consumed as ice cream as well as used in preparations of various desserts like shakes, coffees, brownie, etc. Evergreen and usable in various forms, the consumption of these flavors increases during festivals and other major occasions.

Baskin-Robbins provides Home Delivery through DoorDash service

T

his may sound hard to believe but BaskinRobbins delivers ice cream in the heat of summer to customers' front doors. Over 600 Baskin-Robbins stores in US now deliver scoops of ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and cakes through DoorDash. The chain, owned by Dunkin' Brands Group Inc., previously tested the service in about 60 locations in Los Angeles and Chicago. VP-marketing at Baskin-Robbins, Carol Austin

said “convenience and immediate gratification they are huge customer needs. Customers today want what they want, when they want it.” Many chains deliver burgers, chicken and fries and other food items, but delivering ice cream has always been elusive. DoorDash is making use of insulated carriers to ensure the treats remain intact till reaches the destination. The only difference is that sundaes won't have whipped cream, which dissolved during the delivery time, the company

found during trial runs. BaskinRobbins stores that tested delivery also showed sales increases, Austin said. Dunkin' shares may get a boost from higher Baskin-Robbins sales. McDonald's Corp. is another fastfood brand bringing desserts to diners. Earlier this year the company said that it was partnering with Uber Technologies to offer delivery across the U.S. McDonald's delivery service includes sundaes, milkshakes and McFlurry desserts, though their ice cream is the soft-serve variety rather than hard scoops. Patrons must use the DoorDash mobile app or website to place orders for Baskin-Robbins products, and there are delivery fees that start at $2.99 and average about $5. Austin said, Baskin-

Robbins will look to expand the service to all of its 2,500 U.S. locations as DoorDash grows. It may also consider working with other third-party companies."We are interested in doing whatever we can to expand it. We are working to get it to everyone."

Vice-President, Public Affairs & Communications, Indian and South West Asia at Coca-Cola, Ishteyaque Amjad said, “We are committed to creating a ‘Virtuous Circular Economy’ for sustainable agriculture and provide a forward linkage to the Indian farmer. This can be broadly put under four major initiatives — adding juice to our sparkling portfolio, enhance local fruit variants within our existing juice portfolio, launch new range of products, and exporting Indian fruits to our global systems.” Group President of Future Group, Devendra Chawla said most companies are shifting their portfolio towards healthier options as consumers have become more conscious and are also choosing nutrients instead of just taste. “As a category, desserts are fattening and sugary. But bringing a guilt-free indulgence could appeal to the young generation. The next decade belongs to fruit and not food processing.”

Dondurma – unique ice cream that defies laws of gravity

D

id you ever see an ice cream that does not melt or drip easily and eaten holding the cone upside down, thus defying the laws of gravity? Dondurma, an ice cream is something different from others that have been tasted before. Dondurma - an ice-cream produced in Turkey and Azerbaijan has been a rage all over the world since the past few years. The elasticity of this ice-cream lends itself to a rather fun and enjoyable purchase experience.

The seller tosses the whole mass of ice cream in the air, and jovially teases customers with it by giving just the cone while the customer hastily tries to grab it. He also inverts the cone with the contents in it while performing these tricks; however, the ice cream remains does not fall! This happens for a few minutes before you finally can taste this Turkish delight. Many Turkish ice-cream vendors have practiced the move till perfection and being at the receiving end of this service can be quite an experience. Indeed, it is a captivating view to see how these vendors trick and tease people with ice cream before finally giving it to the customer. Peculiar thickening agents and ingredients such as Salep, a flour made from the root of the purple orchid flower and Mastic, a resin that gives the ice cream are used for its chewiness. Milk and sugar form the other main ingredients. Dondurma was founded in Turkey around the 1850s. The kahramanmaras region in Turkey is famous for this ice cream and was recently introduced in Noida. Dondurma is a 100% vegetarian ice cream and can be made in many flavors. The orchid flowers are brought to India to make this ice cream locally and to ensure that the taste and consistency of the ice cream is the same as the original one. Perhaps, the only difference is the type of milk used. Back in Turkey goat milk is easily available and is used to make the ice cream; whereas in India, cow milk is used to prepare Dondurma ice cream which only contains 0.5% fat.

Ultimate corrosion resistance: A4 stainless steel

W

hen it comes to corrosion resistance, stainless steel is the first choice. Therefore Elesa+Ganter has for many years offered standard parts in A2 grade and most recently also in the even more resistant A4 stainless steel grade.

featured many standard elements made of nonrusting steel. But stainless steel is not necessary the same as stainless steel: today’s material compendiums list around 120 grades with different alloy proportions. While Elesa+Ganter has so far focused on the use of A2 grade, one of the market leaders in standard parts now offers selected products in the even more corrosion-resistant A4 variant specially intended for use in chloride-rich environment, for instance within reach of the sea. These include the matt shot-blasted handwheels GN 227.4, DIN 39 ball grips, drop-forged DIN 580 eyebolts and eye nuts DIN 582. The hinges GN 237, GN 128.2 and GN 129.2 are now available in A4 stainless steel, and so are cabinet „U“handles (GN 425), star knobs (GN 5334.4), threestar handles (GN 5345.4), and one and twoarmed clamp nuts (GN 99.6 and GN 99.8) as well as slotted and split set collars (GN 706.2 and GN 707.2).

Standard parts in A4 stainless steel Food sector, Pharmaceutical and medical sector, Shipbuilding, and offshore constructions are the beneficiaries. Enhanced corrosion resistance has become an ever more important requirement in many different industries – with stainless steel gaining in importance because the material not only safeguards hygiene standards, but also ensures a long service life, low or no maintenance and therefore makes for safe investments. The Elesa+Ganter range of products has always

It is mainly the chrome, nickel and molybdenum constituents which lend the A4 austenite steel its high resistance against chloride and acids. All this makes Elesa-Ganter‘s A4 standard parts the ideal choice not only for use in shipbuilding or in the offshore industry, but also for the food sector, for pharmaceutical and medical applications or for swimming pool construction with its chlorinated water or water rich in minerals. A wide field, in other words. One reason Elesa+Ganter will gradually enlarge and expand its offer of standard parts in A4 stainless steel.

Skip forward to the 21st century, and the rate at which Western ice cream makers are looking to the East for inspiration promises to see renewed momentum. The rapidity with which India’s ice cream market is expanding is worth noting. The low per capita consumption of retail ice cream in India demonstrates the exciting potential in what

Ice cream that tastes like pizza in Philadelphia

U

sually ice cream shops specialize in providing sweet flavors that cool off tastebuds after consumption of hot slice of pizza on a summer day. While several ice cream parlours come up with interesting and unexpected flavors, it’s very rare that one gets the taste of dish in the form of a dessert. This particular wacky ice cream parlor’s latest and best invention is pizza flavored ice cream, made with tomato, oregano, salt, basil and garlic. At Little Baby’s Ice Cream in Philadelphia though it seems interesting, rather one is unsure how it tastes when paired with a

waffle cone. As an added advantage, the ice cream shop is located besides a place called Pizza Brain. Little Baby’s is famous for its experimental flavors. Some of the most notable, unusual ones include Cucumber Dill, Ranch, Grape Grape-Nuts and their ‘flagship weirdo flavor’ Earl Grey Sriracha. The shop claims that it sort of tastes like spicy Froot Loops. While Little Baby’s is certainly unique, pizza-flavored ice cream has been around for a few years now. L.A. based ice cream shop CoolHaus also tried out the strange flavor in 2015.

Four creamy, vegan ice cream launched by Haagen-Dazs

H

aagen-Dazs has launched four flavors of creamy, vegan ice cream. The flavors include: chocolate salted fudge truffle, mocha chocolate cookie, peanut butter chocolate fudge, and coconut caramel! The new vegan ice cream is posted on the Haagen-Dazs website, along with all of the ingredients. Although it’s available at abroad Target stores, few of the stores do not have it yet, one can search on the Haagen-Dazs website for stores that carry it, but accuracy is skeptical. If anyone out there still isn’t convinced that there’s a huge paradigm shift to all things vegan, the explosion of plant-based ice cream, made without any animal products should be convincing.

Target will be carrying vegan ice cream made by Nestle, on the heels of Unilever’s launch of lots of vegan Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and a range of vegan Breyer’s Ice Cream, too. Even So Delicious, maker of vegan ice cream: Cashew Milk Salted Caramel Cluster (YUM!) was snatched up by Danone, a French company generating over 22 billion dollars a year in sales. Danone announced launch of a multi-million dollar campaign to promote So Delicious vegan ice cream! As per Nielsen, in the 52 weeks that ended on April 29, U.S. non-dairy ice cream sales in the grocery and supercenter sectors surged 46 per cent.

Baskin-Robbins survey reveals dads encourage children with ice cream than moms

W

orld's largest chain of specialty ice cream shops, Baskin-Robbins recently conducted a survey that reveals how dads use ice cream as a parenting technique compared to moms. The study also shows the role ice cream plays in bringing families together. The survey even made known many unique findings about fathers and ice cream, including: Dads Use Ice Cream to Incentivize: Fathers are 75 per cent more likely than mothers to use ice cream to bribe their kids to make them do something that they themselves are not interested in doing so. Ice Cream serves as a Peacemaker: 77 per cent fathers are more than twice as likely as moms (30 per cent) to use ice cream to end a conflict or argument. Create ice cream sundaes at this parlour in Surrey, England

S

ummer is intense at this time in Europe and if it continues to heat up in the next few weeks then Surrey's best ice cream parlours will have throng of customers walking in. It is good to try something different at times because one should not restrict their taste to certain flavors. Treats in Redhill High Street lets you make your own sundae, topped with your favourite chocolate bar. The dessert parlour has 60 flavours of gelato on rotation, with 22 in the store at any given time. Made by a company called Marine Ices, the gelato comes in wacky flavours including honey and ginger, bubblegum, salted caramel, tiramisu and Ferrero Rocher.

Manager and co-owner of parlour that opened on May 13 “You can essentially create your own sundae. The world is your oyster. You can literally freestyle the whole thing. Now we are getting a constant flurry of customers and we are getting that one person walking around town with an ice cream, and everyone wants to know where they got it from. If someone else comes in, someone else walks in to see what they

are getting. They are like a herd of sheep.” Scott and his business partner Alex Hoon set up business after seeing the redevelopment that occurred in Redhill. “It is going to be a chilled out, relaxing spot. We've got tables and chairs outside; we've got jazz music in the background. I want people to have a reason to come to town. I want it to be a social gathering spot where they can come and feel safe,” he said.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has categorised ice-creams under ‘dairy based desserts/confections’ with further categorization as plain, medium fat and low fat depending on the percentage of total solids, milk fat and milk protein used. Food regulator defined ‘frozen dessert/frozen confection’ as a product obtained by freezing a pasteurized mix prepared with milk fat and/or edible vegetable oils and fat. The milk fat is used in such dessert for freezing.

You can have your ice cream in a cup or cone and top it off with anything from fudge cubes to Belgian waffles, Matlesers to Jaffa cakes. Next in line are sauces with a choice of raspberry, strawberry, chocolate, maple syrup, caramel, fudge and even marshmallow fluff. Ice cream lovers are left with an important choice whether to take white whipped cream or Treats signature blue whipped cream. The dessert parlour also sells smoothies, made-to-order milkshakes, coffee and frappuccinos. They have plans to sell hot and cold food in near future including smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels and pulled pork in a brioche bun. Scott Pattison,

Latest dessert Unicorn Ice Cream Tacos in California

T

here are still some people on this earth who are not over with unicorn food craze. Many are under the illusion that unicorn food trend was fading away but this is not true. There is a new attraction in the unicorn food catalog – though one may feel hesitant to taste it but it won’t cause any harm to give the trend a try. A new ice cream shop on the west coast, unicorn ice cream tacos are officially the latest fad, and no one would not miss a chance to taste this yummy treat. It's like combination of the best of unicorn frappuccinos, bagels, unicorn toast and shakes, and unicorn cupcakes and finally adding sprinkles! The unicorn ice cream tacos came from an ice cream shop in Garden Grove, California called Sweet Cup, a treatery specializing in rolled ice cream. For those alien to rolled ice cream, this is also enjoying a trendy moment in the world of desserts. Sweet Cup is having a successful run with exciting, off-the-wall flavors. One such flavor is the Ube ice cream with Ube sauce — Ube is a common Filipino ingredient that has been taking the food world by storm since last year. Sweet Cup’s tacos are highly in demand because they are only available once a week for ‘Taco Tuesdays.’ It’s worth the wait in line to munch on the newest dessert craze, but if you are unable to go in on a Tuesday then during the week, order for Rainbow Road unicorn treat in a sweet cup instead. Customers not into the unicorn or taco trend can still indulge at Sweet Cup, too because they even sell their funky flavors in regular cups and cones. The Rainbow Road taco is as uniquely unicorn as it gets at the ice cream shop, with Fruity Pebbles, rainbow rope candy, rolled unicorn ice cream, and sprinkles rounding out the dish. Other tempting taco combinations include lookalike strawberry shortcake number, complete with cheesecake bites and some kind of strawberry sauce, and s’mores available with marshmallows and a chocolate drizzle.

Watermelon Ice Cream Sandwich captures attention on social media

W

atermelon and ice cream are indisputably the sweet food items consumed during summer months. A unique innovation, watermelon ice cream sandwich though no one has attempted to create one. Dominique Ansel Bakery, the bakery responsible for the iconic Cronut, you can eat the unexpected treat - What-a-Melon Soft Serve. As per the several Instagram posts by the bakery chef Dominique Ansel, the dessert sandwich is made with a thick slice of fresh watermelon, with a space cut in the middle filled with Ansel's homemade watermelon soft-serve ice cream. The watermelon also gets decorated with slices of chocolate designed to look like oversize seeds and comes with your very own tiny shaker of sea salt, for customers to add to taste. Unfortunately, though, it's available only at the bakery's Tokyo location, specially created to celebrate the bakery's second birthday. Ansel is a popular persona known for creating innovative food ideas and serving them at his bakeries all over the world. He's perhaps best known for Cronut, a croissant-doughnut hybrid. Recent Ansel creations include a limited-edition Oreo cookie spread, cold-brew ice cream, and the less-straightforward Zero Gravity Sponge Cake, a piece of cake magically floating in a balloon.

Father's Day Special 30

Ice cream industry celebrates Father’s Day

Glenes Bothelo

1

8th June was celebrated as Father’s Day in India. One day cannot be enough to justify the hard work & struggle that a man does to sustain his family. The father’s presence in children lives is extremely important and there can never be a replacement. He is like a strong pillar and foundation stone for his entire family. Any unfortunate incident happens to him, then its’ like a crack in the pillar that makes the entire support weak. Just like how a husband is important for his wife, in same manner the fatherly figure is essential in the life of a child. Ice cream industry made use of this occasion and made several advertisements that celebrated this wonderful day of fatherhood. This year ice cream brands like Amul, Mother Dairy, Vadilal, Prabhat Dairy, Cosmos, Volup, I’KIM created some amazing advertisements on Father’s day attracting all the fathers who desired to celebrate with their kids. These commercials along with taglines had the right impact on ice cream lovers and were intended towards fathers so that they could enjoy this joyous occasion with the loved ones. All these ads were an instant hit on social media and other mediums wherever it was released.

Fathers’ day coincided with the most exciting sports cricket match – India versus Pakistan. Amul decided to merge both the events and came up with an awesome poster wherein the ‘Amul mascot girl’ is seen with a crowd cheering for the Indian cricket team. She is holding a board that states ‘Love U Dad’ and also mentioned in bold letters ‘FATHER OF ALL MATCHES’. This indicates that a father is the main head and authoritative person at home. His decision is ultimate and cannot be questioned beyond as he carefully listens and understands the issue at hand. This is due to the fact that experience and age has made him such a strong personality.

the Vadilal ad and one can see that a green Candy Pop with fatherly figure illustration on it expresses the bond and importance he holds in the family. He is a role model for his children and they always look up to him for guidance.

Mother Dairy had an innovative social media concept as they wanted to distribute vouchers worth Rs. 1000 to their consumers but only one condition. Children had to share the most interesting story wherein their Dad supported them in difficult times despite knowing their kids are at fault. It is obvious that later every father discusses about the problem and guides the children upon the same. A child will be glad that at least his father helped him in that situation because sometimes mothers are unable to handle it. The father’s supportive deeds make him a legendary hero in his children eyes. Mother Dairy campaign was something different as the child had a chance to receive Rs. 1000 voucher after sharing their story using #CheersDad.

Another reputed brand Vadilal based in Ahmedabad expressed gratitude to all the fathers with a simple advt. that sum ups everything in a single line – You are the Coolest Pop. A man works day and night just to see his family and kids happy. He puts in all efforts to fulfill every demand made; hence there is tremendous amount of stress on his mind. Check

Prabhat Dairy headquartered in Navi Mumbai duly acknowledges every man who is a father as Superman, because he is always protective and concerned towards his family. Prabhat Dairy poster greets ‘Happy Father’s day’ and with a salutation of ‘To the Superman of our life’. Every Dad wishes that his kids be successful and happy, hence he has to not just think about the present but rather prepare for the future. Here in the backdrop of the image, one can see a father-daughter in the kitchen and he is giving her a glass of milk to drink. The girl happily drinks it because her father is lovingly giving it to her. This beautiful image depicts the love and concern that every father has for his children. Prabhat Dairy’s ice cream brand Volup made a small video that wished all the fathers infinite joys in this world. With pista, strawberry and mango flavor, placed on a cone they want every father to feel special on the celebrated day. To a child, the father is a hero, friend, supporter, counselor, and he plays several other roles as well. Hyderabad-based Cosmos ice creams also kept it simple, with just a diagram of tie and collar that signifies the huge responsibility a man carries on his shoulders of sustaining a family. Though

he always portrays a serious look, he strives to spend quality time with his children but very often is unable to do so because of work commitments and targets. Another ice cream company by the name New Janta ice cream headquartered in Surat (Gujarat) whose brand I’KIM also shared a wonderful video wishing all Dads very sweet happy fathers’ day and acknowledged them as HERO because indeed they are heroes of their children lives. He will go to the extreme limits when it comes to safeguarding his young ones. After endless sacrifices and pains that the father endures, when children plan something special for him like a visit to the ice cream parlor will surely make up his day. Whatever are the circumstances, he is always like a strong rock for his kids and they can always rely on him for any help. These ice cream brands made Fathers’ day a memorable time to remember because these moments are cherished forever and are priceless.

Unique delicious treats to relish for desserts

I

ndian chefs are combining unusual ingredients to create some delicious sweet treats. Fusion of specific items is the latest buzz in cooking and desserts spectrum that creates excitement in people’s taste buds. Merging distinctive flavours and textures by using several ingredients is becoming common. These days, chefs are making use of salted caramel, lemon grass, spices, vegetables and even herbs, pastry and integrating these ingredients to make yummy desserts. Thereby they create new flavour that gives it a special taste. Salt balances the sweetness and brings out the burst of other flavours in desserts. Savory ingredients are the first choice for chefs when it comes to innovation. Chefs in India are keenly experimenting with different food items to create a delicious blend of the new dessert. Today sweet dishes are not merely consumed post-lunch but are taken in between as fillers when one get those hunger pangs.

The unique combination of Chikoo & cheddar This rather unusual flavour combination of cheddar and chikoo is the brainchild of Aishwarya Kalakata’s creative imagination. Nutty Squirrel is well-known destination that specialises in ice cream sandwiches and preservative-free ice creams. A regular flavor was chosen and what ingredient could it be paired with, to make the item unique. For e.g. chikoo flavour was paired with different

types of cheese to see what could go well and finally cheddar was selected. This involves experimentation with different ingredients. Avocado Puree Now-a-days, avocado is hyped as a super food usually used in salads or guacamole and is rich in antioxidants. Chef Sharad Dewan uses avocado fruit as purée in a dessert. Used as avocado cream, in an Avocado and Matcha Tiramisu, this fruit is skillfully incorporated to augment the texture and lends itself well to the other ingredients with stronger flavours. The ‘Jowari’ cake This certainly is an impressivelooking dessert that one would surely love to indulge in. Considered as once-forgotten poor man’s food — millets are back to satiate one’s hunger. Chef Xerxes Bodhanwala elevate this dish to an altogether different level and used jowar flour to bake a gluten-free and vegan cake along with chocolate —JCC or Jowar Chocolate Cake. Available in Bengaluru at Red Fork, the combination of jowar flour, beetroot, 55 per cent dark chocolate and coconut oil to make this delicious cake. Serve this treat garnished with beetroot chips, coconut beetroot butter, citrus fruits and puffed jowar.

Lamb mince halwa For those who indulge in nonvegetarian foods, it is cherry-on-thecake that there is sweet dish specially created known as ‘lamb mince halwa’. People relish snacks with great delight right from samosas to green peas keema, the thought of using non-veg ingredient as a sweet dish or dessert brings to mind a very strange image. Chef Robin Batra at Trident, Mumbai BKC, boils the lean meat in milk three times to completely remove the strong odour of the meat. After that, the softened meat is minced with saffron. This is finally slow-cooked in khus, paan, cardamom, milk and ghee and the resultant gosht halwa is indeed mouth-watering. The Maple Taffy sticks Maple is a sugar candy made by boiling maple sap till the point where it forms maple syrup but not for so long that it becomes maple butter or maple sugar. The land of Canada has even maple taffies dedicated to it. This Canadian sweet involves boiling the maple sap until it becomes maple sugar. The boiling maple sugar is poured on clean snow and later lifted upon wooden sticks. Soft, chewy, sweet candy delight is best consumed when served fresh. Black Garlic Ice Cream loaded with Cookie Crumble Roasted coffee notes in a garlicky sweet go well with crispy chocolate crumbles match made in foodie heaven. This recipe

on classic custard that’s luscious and rich. But those toasty roasted coffee notes in the black garlic, the fatty cream and crispy chocolate of the Oreos. Try some Bacon for a sweet! Bacon coupled with eggs is usually a breakfast for many urbanites. But just for a change, salty bacon is used by several chefs give the taste of sweetness in a dessert. Mumbaibased, Bono Boutique Ice Cream- Chef Alyssa Chesson has used it to enhance the flavours of her gourmet ice cream. The milk chocolate and bacon ice cream she offers is complete with bacon streak that brings out the creaminess of the milk chocolate in the ice cream. Matcha Green Tea cake Since decades till now, healthconscious people sip on green tea as they count their calories. Crushed into a fine powder from leaves, Japanese green tea is gaining popularity for its bitter-sweet punch in desserts. For instance, the Pistachio and Green Tea Chiffon encompasses pistachio and green tea chiffon cake with yuzu cream, vanilla sable and orange jelly. Making use Contd on. pg no, 35

nternational dessert empire Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man sent hordes of tourists spiraling into a sugar stupor for more than a decade now at its US flagship near Union Square, but that doesn't mean resting on its chocolate pizza laurels. As part of a vaguelydefined revamp of its entire food offerings, over the past few weeks Max Brenner added or refined a number of dishes on the already insanely-long Sweets Menu.

Fondue, a cone of the pastry sticks with warm cups of raspberry and chocolate sauces (milk, dark, or white, your choice!) for dipping. Patrons must go in to try these mouth-watering food items that are rarely available in other places of the world. The S'More Concoction is a parfait version of the campfire classic, with layers of chocolate mousse, marshmallow fluff, crushed-up graham crackers, white chocolate chunks, and whipped cream, and you get three sides: toffee sauce, caramelized bananas (sitting in caramel sauce), and an actual open-faced s'more. If this is still not sweet and you want to try something more sweeter than what you had, eat the spectacular Melting Chocolate S'more Sundae instead, with vanilla and chocolate ice cream, layers of milk chocolate, marshmallow fluff and peanut butter sauce, all topped by an enormous toasted marshmallow with chocolate-covered graham crackers. white chocolate ganache and whipped cream on the side.

Under the new tax structure, the focus would shift from saving tax by having well equipped warehouses, to improving overall efficiency. The emerging of boutique companies with better warehousing facilities will lead to higher productivity in supply chains and the former would become more productive.

The Churro Taco Waffle, while only peripherally involving churros (the waffles are deep fried and rolled in sugar and cinnamon; it's more the "idea" of churros), is nonetheless an impressive and highly photogenic slab of sweetness, involving three scoops of ice cream, mixed berries, crunchy Choco-pops, mint, and a carafe of thick milk chocolate sauce which you pour all over everything, including the table. Crystal Churro

Automation of these assets will be seen, which will give excellent cost benefits to the operators. As the rents charged by organized warehouses will go down, the price advantage that unorganized warehouses presently enjoy will shrink. Customers and clients are in for a much more organized work flow in terms of paper work and accounting as well as finer services from Coldrush Logistics.

Rabri Ice Cream with the touch of Beetroot & Raspberry Sauce Rabri is basically an Indian dish that’s a rich pudding made with bread and milk. Usually served warm, but this version is whipped into a creamy ice cream and served up with a naturally sweet beetroot sauce that has a delicious taste. The hint of cardamom and saffron bring in a certain flavor to the dish. The sweet treat will balance the high quotient of calories that rabri contains. So one can enjoy and consume rabri ice cream without any hesitation. Rabri consists of sweetened and thickened milk. This ultimate indulgence is highly calorific, especially when it has layers of cream in it! Spices, typically cardamom and saffron, and nuts are added to it as well.

Creamistry to open 70 new stores this year a record-setting year thanks to our ongoing innovation and unwavering commitment from our franchisees and employees. With a strong franchise development pipeline, amazing customer service and a spectacular liquid nitrogen smoke show that brings something entirely different to the burgeoning ice cream segment, we see even more accelerated growth in the years to come. In 2013, Yim jumped on the liquid-nitrogen dessert trend when his first Creamistry opened in Irvine.

I

rvine-based Creamistry is on a global expansion phase. Founded in 2013 by entrepreneur Jay Yim, this liquid-nitrogen ice cream chain is expected to open 70 locations this year including the brand’s first shops in New York, China, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. With 41 stores open in three states and three countries, the chain is expected to surpass more than 100 units in 2018. Expanding through franchising, Yim has operators with contracts ready to pull the trigger on stores in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, New York and Texas. He also has international agreements with operators in Kuwait, India and Saudi Arabia as well as a 500-unit master franchisee deal in China. Yim said in a statement,“In 2016, we experienced

Chilly moleculardriven scoop shops were popping up in Los Angeles, Denver and San Francisco. Yim said he got the idea long before opening his first shop. Born into a family of Korean bakers, Yim said he spotted a street vendor making ice cream with liquid nitrogen during a trip to South Korea in 200. His father, Charlie ran five Crown Bakery locations in Southern California, including one in Garden Grove. Yim has worked in the bakeries doing everything from sweeping floors to making raisin dough bread from the age of 12. Over the years he never forgot about the South Korean liquidnitrogen ice cream

stand. So he pulled the trigger on Creamistry – a play on the word chemistry – after he saw similar concepts opening around the country. Today, he has 27 stores in Southern California with six more expected to open within the next two months in Downey, Glendora, Menifee, National City, Pasadena and Pomona. New York will open in Manhattan in August. China will open in August. Kuwait will open in December.

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day celebrated in US

J

une 7 was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, and no better way to celebrate it with a sundae. In Wisconsin, where ice cream and related frozen custard are beloved, every day is like sundae. Georgie Porgie's Gina Esch said, ‘most of our sundaes are made with vanilla custard’ for the very reason that vanilla remains the top-selling flavor, echoed Cindi Sommer at Wautoma's classic Milty Wilty. The urge to create something innovative led to the creation of dusty road sundae fanatic. The main ingredients for this - hot fudge and malt powder (whipped cream optional) but with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla as the base. Among all the ice cream desserts and custard puddings, the richest, yummiest is chocolate sundaes. Purple Door co-owner Lauren Schultz said “Our

most popular chocolate extravaganza sundae contains milk and dark chocolate ice cream with hot fudge, chocolate sprinkles, chocolate chips, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and a malted milk ball. My personal chocolate flavor is Malted Chocolate Chocolate Chunk. The addition of malt powder and the dark chocolate chunk pieces in the ice cream is heavenly.” Esch gladly said that “our best-selling chocolate custard flavor has to be Death by Chocolate. Chocolate custard, fudge, Oreos and chocolate flakes.” She said that her favorite was actually an entry from last year's custard contest – the Tabby Kat. “It's chocolate custard with caramel sauce and KitKat pieces. I love all things caramel and KitKat is one of my favorite candy bars. Put it together and this girl is in custard heaven!" The Ruckus' Scott Schwebel, Shorewood is the place where you can get a sundae with, ‘fresh-spun dutch chocolate soft-serve, spiced fudge sauce with Troubadour chocolate chip crumble and churro.’ Schwebel elucidated that it's not actually a sundae, “We call it a 'Saturdae' in our joint.” Milty Wilty owner Cindi Sommer said the turtle sundae is the most popular there, though with vanilla custard. In addition, they even make it with chocolate as the base. “I love hot fudge. Sometimes I make it a turtle, sometimes I add marshmallow or pecans or bananas or just have it by itself.”
