or the last few years, the buzzword has been “innovation” – in business strategies, in marketing, in developing new products, in thought processes. Everyone today is looking at innovating – coming up with something new or finding new solutions to existing problems. And yet, it is ironic that when it comes down to education, we often end up doing the opposite. We follow the herd mentality, right from choosing our stream of graduation (engineering, medical, CA, etc), to our MBA specialisation – Marketing, Finance, HR, Operations, etc. Of course, this is not to say that innovation is absent in these streams, far from it. However, what if we tried to do something different at the moment of choosing our field of specialisation in the first place? Today, there is a fair number of growing fields, and management graduates in these fields are in huge demand. The Energy and Power sector is set to grow exponentially, with technological advances in renewable energy sources bringing a change in how we approach our daily life. Electric vehicles, solar panels, sustainable models of agriculture – all of these are coming into mainstream consciousness now, and with it, business in these sectors is booming. A massive component in all of these is the technology being developed, and the process of putting this tech to use and building a viable and sustainable business means demand for MBA majors in tech. Similarly, everyone from the layman to the expert understands the need for data and analysis. Every decision being made today – be it in businesses or even in day to day life – starts with data that is analysed, leading to an informed decision. From the very small (niche products, small online firms, etc) to the massive (tech behemoths like Amazon, Google, etc), companies today rely heavily on data that is readily available, and the means to analyse this data so that every decision taken is based on incontrovertible fact. This has led to the boom in business analysts.

9 things to help you build your profile A thorny yet common question most students face is this: Am I good enough for a B-school? Whether you are or not, you can always make yourself a candidate they desire. Read on to know how! Soumen Dutta | Program Director, PG India, IMS

The most important thing you need to do is to try and stand out in the crowd of B-school aspirants. So you have to ensure just one thing: No matter how many candidates they go through, when the interview panellists are done with everyone, they need to remember you. Your name and exact identity isn’t important. Rather, they should remember you from your profile, and what you’ve done in your life, and how you answered their questions. Hence, if you’re trying to figure out how exactly you can stand out in the crowd, here are a few pointers.

1. Hobbies and interests

Why are hobbies important? And what do people judge by hobbies? Hobbies are critical as they showcase the following qualities about you: • Creativity is something that comes inherently with most hobbies. And being able to transfer that creativity to work is an ability that most businesses are looking for. In interviews, people ask about

hobbies because it provides great insight into the interviewee’s personality, creativity and passion. Confidence comes with being good at something. And you get more confident by challenging yourself in your hobby, thereby preparing you for learning new things. Hobbies reduce negative stress, because you end up doing something you enjoy, and it helps to refocus your mind. Hobbies provide a great opportunity to meet new people, discuss your hobby and get more involved with bigger groups. It is an easy way to make new friends when you travel or move to a B-school. Discipline: A key aspect of a hobby is to be able to pursue it regularly. And that brings about a level of discipline in your life that is always highly regarded in any sphere of life

2. Sports

While your parents might be shouting at you, it’s truly time to bring out those dusty spikes and

get those rusting skates out of the garage and get going. Why are sports important? • Demonstrates commitment, discipline and hard work • Proves that you are a wellrounded person • Gives the interviewer something to talk about • Allows you to reduce negative stress • Shows that you can work well in a team. Even if you play an individual sport like boxing or

swimming, you would be training in a team and that shows teamwork • Show you can perform under pressure. There are hardly any situations in sports where you don’t have to face failure, stress and pressure. Sports to pursue: • Team sports like cricket, football, kabaddi • Individual sports like swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis, skating • Non-physical sports like chess

The more exotic the sports, the better it is to pursue. A sport like archery, handball, futsal, etc. give you more material to talk about and piques the interest of the interviewer as well.

3. Travel and trekking

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 6

Travelling can give you a different perspective in life • You can meet amazing new people • You’ll make unforgettable memories • You can learn more about current issues • Can give you interesting stories to tell during your B-school interviews Places to travel to: • Travel to unique and famous places around your hometown and your work town • If possible, travel to countries abroad • Go for a couple of easy treks in and around the place you live in. You can find trekking groups on Facebook and Google • Travel to places off the beaten track

If you are a regular trekker then aim to scale higher grounds during this period. A Gangotri trek or a trek to the Everest Base Camp always stands out in your CV!

4. Learn new languages

By new languages, I don’t mean that you can learn Bengali if you are from Maharashtra and living in Kolkata. That just doesn’t qualify. Rather learning Mandarin, French, Spanish or German has practical applications and is what matters. In terms of difficulty in learning, Mandarin trumps the rest, while the maximum amount of weightage is given for knowing Mandarin because of the rush for all companies to start operations in China.

5. Blogging and Vlogging

The internet has led to a plethora of opportunities opening up for the closed room authors and video journalists. Why is blogging/vlogging important? • Blogs and Vlogs are the best ways to showcase your command on a topic/subject • They become a content repository for you and can be utilised for enhancing your digital profile • It builds confidence as you become pretty sure of the topic/ subject you are writing about. Hence, you can become a subject-matter expert • If your content is good, this can lead to a worthwhile network being created. In the business world, nothing is valued more than the network and connections that you have

6. Internships & Live Projects

If you are a college-goer, you must be enjoying the long leaves and holidays between the semesters, when you relax and unwind. Wrong! That is the time for you to build your profile by taking up a short term internship. Internships help you in getting a real feel of the business world and how companies work. You might be made to slog like a donkey, but do it nevertheless. It’s much better to experience it in your internship than to experience it first time in your job. Besides, what’s better than to earn a part of your pocket money as well. But what type of internships will you take up? First choice, something from your core field – a mechanical engineer in a manufacturing setup, a commerce grad in an accounting firm and so on. In case you don’t find that look for opportunities in event companies, marketing companies and personal sales companies. The value of an internship is not so Some of the websites on which you can search for Internships: • Linkedin • Internshala • Letsintern • Intern Hunt • Twenty19 • Youth4work • Hellointern Some of the websites on which you can search for live projects: • Linkedin • Oysterconnect • Awaign • Internshala • Takeup.in • themoneyroller

much in the brand you work for or the glamour of the job, but rather your learning and the grind you went through. Try getting at least a couple of internships beyond your regular college internship. Nowadays a lot of companies outsource part of their development or creation projects in the form of modular live projects. Freelancer.com is a good source to scout for these opportunities.

7. Participate (and possibly win) academic competitions

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 8

Winning is always a joy in itself. But even participating in academic competitions like a Hackathon, Coding competitions, robotics fair, AI seminars, Marketing Symposiums, etc. has its own benefits. Getting to know new people, making friends, working in groups in pressure situations, learning the art of ‘Jugaad’ are all vital lessons in life. Besides, these are bright spots on your cv.

Internships help you in getting a real feel of the business world and how companies work. You might be made to slog like a donkey, but do it nevertheless. It’s much better to experience it in your internship than to face it first time in your job. Besides, what’s better than to earn a part of your pocket money as well? The value of an internship is not so much in the brand you work for, but rather the learning and the grind you went through.

8. Publications, conferences

seminars,

I have come across a lot of students who feel that an academic paper published in a journal may not be of any use in a B-school setting. If you think that, you’ve been living under a rock. An article published in a journal holds a lot of value. Why? It shows a determined pursuit for knowledge, a perseverance to gain command over a topic, an ability to articulate your thought in meaningful arguments — in short qualities that are essential for a manager. Presenting in a seminar or conference shows your ability to present in front of a group of stalwarts, an ability that is critical in the boardroom. And in these activities, you get to come in contact with figures of authority in that subject. A nifty ace in your bag.

9. Non-academic articles

Did you know – even an article published in a newspaper or featured in a magazine on a topic not even distantly related to your academics can carry a lot of weight. It gives you a lot of credibility in the eyes of the interviewer. And, if nothing else, it gives you good fodder for conversation during the Personal Interview round. So, get on with the writing and the publishing... At the end let me give you a clear action plan. If you are a person still pursuing your studies and are actively pursuing one or more of the things that I have mentioned earlier in the article, then continue doing it. If possible practise it actively, participate in competitions and events and collect as many certificates as you

can. It helps to prove that these are not passing whimsies. If you are someone who was once active in one of these things but have given up completely due to lack of time, academic pressures and/or family pressures, then it’s time for you to wake up that sleeping child. Plan your day well. Time management is the key to balancing things in life. And as a manager, that is what you will be expected to manage the most. Create a daily schedule with time allocation for every activity. You will not get more than 24 hours, but try to make the best of the 24 hours that you get. Finally, if you are someone who has never been interested in hobbies, sports, travelling, seminars, publications, and all other co-curricular activities, then be sure to have kick-ass academic scores to showcase your undivided focus on academics. Otherwise it’s not too late to participate in competitions, internships and live projects to build up your profile. Also, you can pick up an easy hobby like terrace gardening, debating or cooking. Just remember to do it on a daily basis and read up well about it. A

Information management is closely related to, and overlaps with, the management of data, systems, technology, processes and – where the availability of information is critical to organisational success – strategy. An MBA in Information Management will equip students in understanding the knowhow of strategic information management, knowledge management, usability, business administration, information systems, information architecture, information design, computer sciences, policy, ethics, and project management.

INSTITUTE PROFILE

Case studies are an MBA staple. In all of my years as a strategy professor at SDA Bocconi and now the dean at SDA Bocconi Asia Center, Mumbai I have always stressed how important it is to learn how to solve case studies. As a b-school student, you will be discussing case studies almost every day. Simply because you learn a lot from real life examples where you can put yourself in. A case study allows you to understand businesses and their challenges at a more practical and realistic level, as well as to apply theoretical frameworks is a useful manner. You’ll learn how businesses can plan everything strategically, from their smallest investment to their biggest move, and you’ll also understand the psyche with which these decisions are made. Whether you’re preparing for your b-school interview or an interview for your dream job, it is critical for you to know how to break down a very complex business problem and how to argue for and communicate the potential solutions. When you go to an interview and are asked to solve a problem, you’re mostly evaluated on your ability to demonstrate that you can identify and map the core elements of that situation parts that need to be investigated, that you are able to ask the right questions on each one of those elements and that you can then generate and analyse a number of alternative solutions and pick one of them. So, how do we break down a complex business problem? To help you understand how to solve a strategy case study let’s take the example of an airline company that is facing a particular investment decision. Assume that this airline company is already present in a certain country with a wide network of flights connecting numerous cities. Its prices are very competitive and its customers are particularly satisfied with its punctuality and general service. Now imagine that this airline has now a chance to buy some new slots in an airport where they are not present at the moment. It seems like a great decision to grow the business, but is it? How do we break down that case if we were in charge of making that decision? There are two fundamental pieces of analysis to perform here. First, you need to assess the investment opportunity itself, separate from whatever else the company is doing. For this, you need to calculate the return on investment of these new slots. You should look at the market and how many new customers you can get with those new flights, and you also should look at the cost of buying and running those slots. Now you would be able to calculate the return on investment measure that you can learn in any basic finance course. Let’s assume that the return on investment is good in this case.

For the second part of the analysis, you need to assess the impact of that investment in whatever else the company is doing, that is, on the overall strategy of the company. This is a less straightforward and more difficult part. For that, you need to understand the business model of the company, that is, what are the two or three drivers that are absolutely core to that business model? If you look at the airline business you realize that one of its key drivers is the turnaround time. Turnaround time is the time that goes from the moment a plane lands in an airport, unloads the people and the baggage, loads the next group of people and their luggage in the flight, and then takes off again. It is important because during that time the company is not making money. So if it is very long, the company is losing money. Now, imagine that the company has the best turnaround time in the industry, about half of the industry average. Now you calculate the impact of that difference of less turnaround time on the company’s profit and loss account and you realize that two-thirds of the profit of that company makes comes from of the more efficient turnaround. So at this point what are the smart questions to ask about this case? First, if you buy those slots, what is the impact on the turnaround time of the rest of the airline’s network? Is that an airport that causes a lot of delays or not? Are their regular flight cancellations and constant delays? If so, you have a problem because if you start operating from that airport, your plane is going to take off late, it is going to arrive in another city late, which is going to increase the turnaround time in that city and so on and so forth; and all of a sudden you are running a business with a much higher turnaround time and you’ve lost a huge chunk of your profit as a consequence. So that would be one fundamental way to break down the case. First, separate the financial stand-alone assessment from the strategic impact assessment. Second, when you get into the strategic part you need to identify the two or three key drivers of the business model of the company because those are the ones that you have to protect, at all costs. If the new investment impacts those drivers negatively, you might not make it even if the stand-alone return is very positive. So why is it so important to learn to break down cases? Well, because management is all about solving complex problems and finding the best solution among a set of alternatives. When you go into an interview, the person in front of you wants to know if you’re capable of understanding the scope of a problem and asking the right questions through a structured approach. It is a discipline that we intensively teach for the International Master in Business (IMB) program at SDA Bocconi Asia Center in Mumbai because we realize how critical it is for students and managers, whether they are facing a job interview or an actual real-life situation at work.

CORPORATE INTERVIEW - INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

‘You don‘t need coding expertise for IM‘ ...says, ARJUN KAPUR, Assistant Manager at Flipkart and an alumnus of SPJIMR. In conversation with Kalyani Majumdar, Arjun talks about Information Management and its importance in the current job industry, along with some helpful suggestion for the MBA aspirants.

always known that my people skills and managerial skills were good and so, somewhere instinctively, I had always been inclined towards doing an MBA.

Q. Why did you want to pursue an MBA in Information Management?

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 16

Q. Tell us about your career trajectory until your MBA.

I’m a computer science engineer from Vellore Institute of Technology. After graduating, I joined Deloitte in the analytics team in Hyderabad and worked there for about 33 months. I’d joined as an Associate before being promoted to a Solution Advisor, but even after the promotion, I got the feeling that my career had plateaued. That’s when my senior managers at the company suggested that I should pursue an MBA. Besides, I’d

When I started to prepare for MBA, I had a goal in mind: If I made it to the top 10 B-schools in India, I would consider taking admission, otherwise going through the gruelling procedure and spending so much time and money would not make any sense. In the first year, I did not get a good percentile, so I passed on the calls I received. For my second attempt, I was more serious and consistent with my preparation. I joined IMS, and this time, I got a good percentile and got the calls that I wanted. And that’s when SP Jain came about, apart from the other B-schools, of course. Now, SP Jain asks for the specialisation that you would like to pursue right at the application stage. I chose Information Management, as it seemed to be the best fit for me considering my work experience and my educational

background. Firstly, I knew I wanted to stay in the tech industry. And secondly, if I’d chosen any other specialisation, my compensation and work experience of 3 years would have been nullified and I would be considered a fresher. I realised that I could do justice only if I remained in the same domain and work on my managerial skills. So that is how I got into Information Management, and my work experience was exactly what the B-school wanted.

Q. Why did you choose SP Jain as your MBA destination?

There were multiple reasons for me to choose SP Jain. The course curriculum really stood out. I loved the fact that SP Jain has internship programmes in the first year wherein they send the student to a rural village for a two month internship called the DOCC (Development of Corporate Citizenship). The corporate internship is in the second year. I felt this was a better structure, as by the second year, students are clearer about the field to pursue. Therefore, if you are aligned with the company, you are more mature to make a career choice, vis-à-vis if

you had the corporate internship in the first year. Another highlight at SP Jain is the GFT (Global Fast Track) programme, in which you are sent to partner colleges for about 3 to 4 weeks in the top colleges in the US and you do a cluster there. I got the opportunity to go to Carnegie Mellon University. Also, I like the fact that there is no quota system at SP Jain.

Q. Could you tell us about your internship experiences and your learning from them?

My rural internship was with an NGO in Tirthan Valley, where there is a UNESCO world heritage site. The project was about Eco Tourism and how to help them to set up cooperatives. We worked with them for two months and tried to create awareness among them about why they should have an alternative livelihood and realise the importance of ecotourism and involve a lot of stakeholder management. The challenge was to understand their problems, gain their trust and find a way to help them. In the end we had managed to convince them to set up a cooperative. The key learning was

MBA opens up multiple doors for you. After you graduate, you are not restricted to one job profile irrespective of your specialisation. Even with an MBA in Information Management, a lot of other job roles have opened up for me. I could sit for job placement interviews for Marketing and Ops roles. For instance, firms like Amazon look for MBA graduates with two years of technology background.

about stakeholder management and also what happens at the grassroots level that is the bottom of the pyramid. We learn a lot of marketing and HR theories in the classroom, but going out into the field and doing it is a whole different ballgame. We had to liaise with government departments as well. Overall, this was a great learning for me. Also, it was very different from the corporate internship. The rural internship was unstructured, and you entered the project without knowing the problem and then improvised on ground. Also, there are no hotels or cafés and you live in the village with the community. My corporate internship was with Amazon in the product management team for three months in Chennai. I was working with the Kindle team. I had to deal with the accounting and costing systems and come up with product solutions that could improve the efficiency of those systems. Product management was one of the most sought after roles in B-schools, particularly with a company like Amazon. But somehow I did not enjoy it much, as my role was similar to what I was doing before my MBA. And that’s why I decided not to take up the full time position with Amazon.

Q. Has an MBA opened up more job opportunities? How much of your work profile changed after an MBA?

I would say that an MBA makes sense if you are still figuring out the domain you would like to pursue, but are restricted by your background; in such a case, MBA opens up multiple doors for you. After you graduate, you are not restricted to one job profile irrespective of your specialisation.

So even if I have an MBA in Information Management, a lot of other job roles have opened up for me. I also had the opportunity to sit for the job placement interviews for roles in Marketing and Operations. For instance, firms like Amazon look for MBA graduates with two years of technology background. If you give them enough reasons to believe that you are aligned towards tech, they will hire you over a non-tech candidate. So, even to sell technology, it would help if you are an MBA with a tech background. You need some level of insight into the technology domain. Thus, after my MBA, my job role changed drastically, with a lot of new opportunities coming my way. An MBA is a degree that will let you pick and choose from a wider spectrum of job roles.

Q. At present, you are working with Flipkart. What does your job role entail?

Currently, I am with the Grocery, Category Marketing Team at Flipkart. I look after all the brand alliances and partnerships to basically help Grocery acquire new customers. There are marketing campaigns, bank partnerships and alliances that I need to crack.

Q. What kind of aptitude should one ideally have to pursue an MBA in Information Management?

Apart from your CAT scores, GD-PI and so on, it is really important to know if you are truly passionate about technology. People think if you have a hardcore coding background or data science or data analytics experience, only then should you get into Information Management. That is a false perception. Even if you have the slightest inclination towards

technology and you have a decent amount of work experience, certain certifications that prove your interest towards technology, or if you have some work experience in the tech industry, you can pursue Information Management. Also, if you can give a proper explanation during your group interviews, I think that is required to crack the Information Management role. Most people do an MBA because they want to shift their career domain. I was in coding, and knew that I didn’t want to keep doing it, whereas I was extremely interested in technology. Thus Information Management was a perfect fit for me.

Q. What is the difference between Information Management and Technology Management?

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 18

Honestly, there is nothing different. If you Google it, you will find many different definitions. Practically, there is no difference on ground. Companies come for placements and they don’t care if you are from Information Management or Technology Management. You should be able to show managerial

Don’t give up at the last juncture. It can get difficult when you have to juggle your work life, personal life and time to prepare for the CAT. Setting a time and being true to yourself is very important, and matching up to the time table you have set for yourself is all it takes. Even if you have set one hour for study everyday, just stick to it. Consistency is more important than hard work.

ability to leverage technology and solve the problem, that’s all.

Q. What kind of growth do you see for Information Management job roles in the future?

Information Management is a broad umbrella under which all the rest of the subsets such as data analytics and so on will fall. There are a set of tech-based companies, like Google, Amazon, FB, Netflix, etc, that have a tech background and need technology to scale. Let’s take the example of an FMCG company like HUL or Asian Paints; their recruiters at SP Jain were there for Information Management candidates. All of these companies have technology as their backbone, and without this they won’t be able to run. In IT services, it is an Information Management professional who will be on the sales team, as you need to understand a tech product to sell it. Even for consulting companies like Deloitte, there is a role called tech consulting. At present, not a single industry is without technology.

Q. Do you have any suggestions for MBA aspirants?

Apart from the hard work that you are putting in, look for consistency. Sometimes we give up at the last juncture. Don’t. If you are facing a lot of hardship, and the mock tests results aren’t up to your expectations, don’t get

disappointed. Hold on! It is also very important to have a good mentor. I cannot emphasise the importance of having a good mentor, who has been there and done that and understands your situation. Once you are already in a B-school, try not to follow the herd mentality. If you are not happy at the end of the day, what’s the point? Do something that you love and it will work wonders for you. Since, in today’s day and age, data-driven insights are critical for business decision-making, hence managers and senior executives across the globe are investing in this field. The top B Schools are now offering management courses in Business Analytics and Data Analytics.

‘When resources are limited, creativity is unlimited‘ …says, DR PRITHWIS MUKERJEE, an MS and PhD degree holder from University of Texas, Dallas and Director at Praxis Business School. In an interview with Kalyani Majumdar, Dr Mukerjee shares his learning and provides insights on big data, data science and the role of data analysis in the world of business. scholarship in Management Science. So I simply accepted the same and went to the US. Nothing more, nothing less.

Q. Your thoughts on Big Data that is driving most industries today?

Q. What was it like doing Masters and PhD in Management Science from the University of Texas at Dallas, USA? What was the trigger for you to pursue this field?

Frankly, the field of study was fortuitous. I had finished my B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur that, in my opinion, was the best institute in India. I wanted to go to the US for my higher studies to continue with my interest in Computer Aided Design. I did get an admission to some big name universities like Cornell and University of Minnesota, but did not get financial aid. My father was a government employee and could not afford the fees. So I was happy to go wherever I could get financial aid or scholarship, and I am grateful to the University of Texas at Dallas for offering me a full

See, “Big Data” is an ambiguous term. When I wrote my first program at IIT Kharagpur, my machine was an HP1000 with 256 kb (yes KB!) of memory. When I became the DBA at Tata Steel, the entire diskspace in our IBM ES9000 mainframe was 44 GB — and we had the second biggest database in India. Today, when people talk of Big Data, they pretend to work with gigabytes and terabytes, but what really matters is the ability to make the best use of whatever data they have. So it is not the size of the data, but what you can make of the data that matters. If you have the right ideas, you can use any size of data.

Q. How are Facebook and other various apps using Big Data? Your take on data privacy issues?

Social media uses “big data” to customise the user experience in a way that is unique to a specific individual. This means that social media platforms need to know an individual as an individual and not as a member of a collective. Of course, there is a complete violation of privacy. Google, Facebook, Amazon know more about you than what perhaps even your spouse knows

about you, but well, that is your choice. You have voluntarily sacrificed your privacy to get access to free services. Remember, when you subscribe to a free service, YOU are the product that is being sold or will be sold to others. In the digital world, privacy is a myth. If you really want privacy, be like Richard Stallman, stop using cellphones, stop using credit cards, stop using Google, stop using Gmail, stop using Facebook, stop using an ISP, stop using all digital services. Can you do that? You cannot. So grin and bear it (or enjoy it).

Q. Why build a career in Data Science?

Once upon a time, if you had a graduate degree, you were the toast of the town. Then everyone started becoming college graduates and you needed an MBA degree. Now the vanilla MBA with a specialisation in Marketing or Finance is just too mundane. If you want to differentiate yourself, you need something more than just a B.Com/B. Tech + MBA… And that differentiation could come from a specialisation in Data Science.

Q. What skills must a student have to become a successful Data Scientist?

A Data Scientist is a software engineer who knows more Statistics than other software engineers, and a statistician

PROFESSOR SPEAK - BUSINESS & DATA ANALYTICS

PROFESSOR SPEAK - BUSINESS & DATA ANALYTICS

(or mathematician) who knows more software engineering than other statisticians. So you need to straddle both worlds – of mathematics and computer programming. You do not have the luxury of the “OR”; you need to handle the tyranny of the “AND”. Finally, you need to understand business, and that too digital business.

Q. Why does Data Science matter and how does it power business value?

I am not too sure about business “value”, but business is certainly powered by data science. In fact, data-driven decisions are the key to good business. As some great Indian Mahatma has said (or has quoted others, without attribution) – In God we trust, everyone else brings data to the table.

Q. Earlier, people had data but not utilising it fully. Now, with new technologies all data is being analysed. How do you think this is impacting the current strategies in the market?

More than data, it is the technology that is the driver. And in this case, technology means digital technology (not to be confused with the technology related to energy, food, materials etc). Digital technology is different from information technology. Information technology is old hat, like implementing SAP to run the fleet management. Digital technology creates new business models like Uber and AirBnB that use data in a whole new way.

Q. What is the difference between data mining and statistics? That is an easy one. Traditional statistics

is descriptive or at best inferential. Data mining (or if we use the more fancy word, Machine Learning) is all about predictions. Predictive statistics is the new game in town.

Q. Tell us about challenges if any, of teaching Data Science in India.

Finding teachers is the biggest challenge, because the best data scientists get offers in companies at a salary that is very difficult for a college to match. So we need to work with part time teachers or those who really have a passion to teach. Finding such people is not easy, and we at Praxis are lucky to have some people like that. The second biggest challenge is to get access to really big and yet realistic data. Data is very valuable and no company is willing to share data that we in a college can use to teach. These are the two primary challenges. A

Data Science and Business Analytics: The cutting edge

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 22

PROF. CHARANPREET SINGH, Co-founder & Director at Praxis Business School Foundation talks about the importance of specialised course in Data Science and the idea behind introducing this as a PGP in Praxis Business School. Q. In 2011, Praxis pioneered formal teaching of analytics in the country by launching the one-year full-time postgraduate programme in Business Analytics. What made you decide on starting a course specifically on Data Analytics? There are three drivers for starting the PG in Business Analytics: 1. Early sensing of opportunity because of our proximity to

the industry: The fact that all the senior professors at Praxis have had successful corporate careers means that we have deep and regular interactions with the industry. We could sense that three things were coming together unprecedented generation of data; tremendous advancement in technology that enabled affordable storage, retrieval

and processing of data; and the realization that intelligent analysis of data could create significant competitive advantages. We realized that this would drive the need for resources who would have a grasp of the techniques and technologies required to generate insights from the data. While this need would explode, there was no formal pipeline for training and ‘supplying’ these resources to the industry. We sensed an opportunity here. 2. Domain capability: The Praxis ecosystem was well positioned to exploit this opportunity. Our team has always been strong in tech and math with professors who have studied at institutions like the IITs and ISIs, worked in tech for decades and developed the ability to learn and adapt new technologies. It was therefore relatively easy for us to design and deliver a program that was at the leading edge of technology. 3. An instrument to differentiate ourselves: We started as a business school in 2007 and specializing in Business Analytics in 2011 was strategically a good way of differentiating ourselves from the ocean of business schools (that look and sound similar) in the country and position ourselves as a business school that creates managers and leaders for the digital world.

Q. Is your programme called PGP in Data Sciences or PGP in Business Analytics? Is there a difference?

We started life in 2011 as a PGP in Business Analytics. The

programme had a major emphasis on statistics, econometrics and domain analytics. As the domain evolved, we added modules in Machine Learning, Visualisation, Big Data, Deep Learning covering subjects like neural networks and NLP. With the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence, the ‘look and feel’ of the programme has changed significantly from what it looked like when we started. We have therefore renamed it as PGP in Data Science – the science that brings together mathematical, programming and business skills to solve industry and societal problems.

Q. Can you tell us all about the programme that your institute offers?

The Praxis PGP in Data Science has the following highlights: 1. It is a 9 month full-time program. Despite this, about 90% of the batch comes with industry experience – so people leave their jobs and join our program. This means that the students are serious about Data Science – this ensures a lively class environment with animated debate and discussions and a good amount of learning. 2. Candidates have to go through a rigorous selection process for admissions, comprising an aptitude test and an interview. Close to 40% of all applicants do not make it to the program – only those candidates who have the attributes required to succeed in this field are selected, thereby ensuring that we don’t disrupt the life of a professional who is unlikely to create a success out of this program. Failure leads to

frustration – and it’s just not fair to bring students on board just to increase numbers. 3. Comprehensive, contemporary and relevant curriculum– the Praxis team prides itself on providing the most comprehensive curriculum in data science in the country – 500+ hours of in-class delivery addressing the three pillars of data science –techniques, technology and business. It takes a lot effort to keep the curriculum contemporary, as the field is evolving at the speed of light. Our curriculum is perpetually in beta stage, with changes being incorporated every 6 months. The pedagogy includes a mix of concepts, labs and used case discussions. A

‘A good Data Analyst must be creative with data‘ This is what ARPIT CHAUKIYAL, a final year MS in Business Analytics student at The University of Texas, Dallas, has to say. In an interview with Kalyani Majumdar, Arpit shares his experience as a Data Analyst before diving into Business Analytics, and shares an in-depth insight into the world of data

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 24

Q. Tell us about your career trajectory from working as a Data Analyst to pursuing an MS in Business Analytics from the University of Texas.

With the abundance of data in today’s world, I aspire to be an empowered professional with the vision and grace of building insightdriven solutions for enterprises to use data for strategic advantage. Working as a Data Analyst for approximately 4 years, I laid the foundation of my problem-solving, strong analytical, leadership, facilitation, communication and

client/customer relationship management skills. As a part of innovation projects, I have been involved in various Proof of Concepts on tools and technologies in Hadoop, Big Data, Spark and Big Data Analytics on cloud infrastructure, provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS). As a part of my graduate curriculum here at the University of Texas Dallas, I am focused on learning Data Science tools and techniques, Machine Learning, Neural Nets & Deep Learning techniques on the infrastructure configured on the cloud provided by IAAS (Infrastructure as a Service) providers like AWS & Azure.

Q. How is the campus at the University of Texas, Dallas? Why did you choose this university as your MBA destination?

UTD has a very beautiful campus, apart from having an excellent faculty; it has a gym area, recreational center and a library that is open 24 X 7. I chose UT Dallas because of its flexible curriculum and open elective courses. Here we are free to choose any course based on our aptitude and liking, as long

as you meet the prerequisites. Also, the climatic conditions of Dallas are similar to Delhi, which was another plus point for me. Dallas has a large Indian community and the cost of living in Dallas is less as compared to other cities on the east coast or west coast.

Q. What is the difference between Business Analytics and Data Analytics?

The main difference between Business Analytics (BA) and Data Analytics (DA) is that BA is more closely aligned to the domainspecific knowledge and business perspective of the given data, whereas DA is the process of examining data sets in order to draw conclusions about the information they contain.

Q. How do you define the primary responsibilities of a data analyst?

The primary responsibilities of a data analyst vary from organisation to organisation. Some of the common tasks that a DA does are — interpreting data, analysing results using statistical techniques, developing and implementing data analyses, optimise statistical

efficiency and quality and acquiring data from data sources.

Q. What are the required skill sets for a data analyst? How important is it to be very good with numbers to pursue a career in Data Analytics?

I think the most important skill set that a DA should have is a combination of analytical and statistical thinking with an ability to be creative with data. Apart from that, a DA should have a strong hold on SQL, reporting and visualisation software, and presentation skills. It helps if one is good with numbers, but it is not mandatory, as nowadays most of the computation is done by software and programming languages like SAS, R & Python.

Q. How often should you retrain a data model?

A data model keeps changing as more and more data is generated. A general rule is that more data leads to a better and accurate data model. Hence, as the new data arrives, the data model needs to get updated. The frequency of updating the data model depends on the trade-off between the computation cost of updating the data model and the minimum level of accuracy we want from our data model.

Some of the common tasks that a Business Analyst does are — interpreting data, analysing results using statistical techniques, developing and implementing data analyses, optimise statistical efficiency and quality and acquiring data from data sources. techniques, developing and implementing data analyses, optimise statistical efficiency .

Q. What are some common problems that data analysts encounter during analysis?

The biggest issue we face during analysis is data quality issue. Almost 70% of the time is invested in extracting, cleaning and making the data fit for analysis. Apart from it, having inconsistent and incomplete data, common misspelling and duplicate entries, misclassified data is a common data quality problem that most data analysts face.

Q. What are the important steps in the data validation process?

The important steps in the data validation process are: • Missing data value imputation • Null/Junk value treatment • Validating data formatting • Removing the duplicate data • Handing the inconsistency within the data, etc

Q. What is a typical data analysis process? Could you explain it a little bit?

A typical data analysis process consists of the following phases: 1. Decide on the objectives: The business unit has to decide on objectives for the data science teams. Key metrics or performance indicators must be identified early in the process. 2. Data collection: More data — especially data from more diverse sources — enables in finding better correlations, building better models and finding more actionable insights. Having every record available for analysis can provide real value. 3. Data cleaning: The first step in data analysis is to improve data quality. DA correct spelling

mistakes, handle missing data and weed out nonsense information. This is the most critical step in the data value chain — even with the best analysis, junk data will generate wrong results and mislead the business. 4. Data modelling: Data scientists build models that correlate the data with the business outcomes and make recommendations regarding changes to the levers identified in the first step. This is where the unique expertise of data scientists becomes critical to business success — correlating the data and building models that predict business outcomes. 5. Optimise and repeat: The data value chain is a repeatable process and leads to continuous improvements, both to the business and to the data value chain itself. Based on the results of the model, the business will make changes to the driving levers and the data science team will measure the results. A

Conceptualised in 2016, the Post Graduate Programme for Women (PGMPW) was based on research by various organisations including McKinsey, which spoke about the leaking women leadership pipeline in the organisation. Typically, it was observed that although organisations may have more women in lower management roles, this number of women significantly decreases as we move to midmanagement to senior management and then the leadership positions. This leak happens due to various factors, including family responsibilities, social obligations or skill set mismatch. Typically, when re-joining the workforce, women do face difficulty, which is the reason behind the PGMPW. According to Dr Ashita Aggarwal, Chairperson, PGMPW, Professor of Marketing, “The programme was conceptualised for women who have worked for 4 to 5 years, took a break and are now ready to come back. We would offer them a very rigorous upskilling programme, which is a one year full time management programme. And they would specialise in the areas that they were working in, so that they are ready to come back to work and the idea was to remove the effect of the time lapse in their professional journey.”

The popularity of Rural Management as a specialisation has gained momentum over the last few years. With the changing socio-economic scenario and government policies on rural development, it has been seen that an increasing number of students are opting to work in this field. According to a study by a well-known consulting firm, India’s rural economy accounts for almost 50% of its GDP. The idea is to harness resources in the rural areas not only with the purpose of rural welfare and upliftment, but income generation as well. An MBA in rural management prepares students to take on challenging responsibilities in rural and developmental organisations.

This is what PRATIK BHINGARDEVE, a first year PGDRM student at IRMA, Anand feels. In an interview with Kalyani Majumdar, Pratik talks about its curriculum to go beyond rural management into a broader spectrum that include Agri-business, CSR, corporates and more.

Q. After computer engineering, why did you decide to do a PGDRM from IRMA?

I did Masters in Computer Engineering as I thought I would stick to technical roles rather than managerial job roles. However, when I was working with Cognizant, my job role involved a lot of coordination with clients, along with my managerial duties. I realised that I was good at managerial roles and I enjoyed it

too. Thus, I wanted to explore my management skills further. I knew that it would be a drastic step to change my career track, but my instinct was saying that I should pursue an MBA. Apart from that I was also involved with the CSR programme with an NGO at Cognizant, wherein I had to work with farmers and understand their livelihood. It was then I knew that I didn’t want to sit behind a computer and work for the rest of my life; I wanted to do something for society. I wanted to interact with people, and also create an entrepreneurial idea based on rural aspects. For that, I wanted to understand the industry from a management perspective. So I ended up with the idea of pursuing management studies with a social aspect to it, and IRMA seemed to be the best fit for me.

Q. Tell us a bit about your campus life at IRMA?

Earlier there were three internships in the first year, but now we have two: Village field segment and Summer Internship segment. The

workload is very systematically divided. I have a time table for the next two terms as well. Students have ample amount of time to plan out their schedule in advance. Also, we get enough time to pursue extracurricular activities and get time for self-study, which I feel is very important for personal growth. We also get ample opportunity to explore other domains. There are regular lectures by industry experts on the IRMA campus. The campus itself is huge, and it is beautiful and green. Everything is within the campus and the connectivity to the main market is good as it is located within Anand. There are a few restaurants nearby as well. But we have everything available within the campus, and there’s hardly any need to go outside.

Q. What kind of an aptitude should a student have to pursue this course?

There was a time when having an aptitude towards rural life was more appreciated, but now the curriculum and the study modules

are changing. Anyone that would like to make a career in AgriBusiness, development sector, CSR, government bodies or even in the corporate sector can look at IRMA as an MBA destination.

Q. What was the selection procedure for IRMA like for you?

Once you clear the CAT, then you have to sit for IRMASAT. It is their online test. Till now, IRMASAT was conducted in the respective cities where the candidate resides, but from 2019, they call the students shortlisted for the online exam to the campus. Once you clear IRMASAT, you have a full day GDPI session. There are two sets of GDs. For one GD, we were given a topic on ‘Irrigation in the 19th century’. We had to discuss and take decisions as a team. The other GD was based on a current issue. I was given ‘Budget allocation for agriculture in 2018’. The PI is mostly based on your profile and how you can connect it to the campus. I was honest with them and I told them that as I had progressed in my career, I had reached the decision to pursue PGDRM from IRMA. Prior to my visit to IRMA, I had gathered information from a senior about the campus and what it is like to study at IRMA. It

There was a time when having an aptitude towards rural life was more appreciated, but now the curriculum and the study modules are changing. Anyone that would like to make a career in AgriBusiness, development sector, CSR, government bodies or even in the corporate sector can look at IRMA as an MBA destination.

is very important to know what the campus offers and what it stands for. Understand the core values of the B-school and try to align your profile with the B school and the course. This increases your chances to get selected.

Q. What is the study module like at IRMA?

The perspective of looking at IRMA only for Rural Management is changing. In the last 2 to 3 years, it is in the process of changing the curriculum to incorporate not only the rural and development sector, but also the corporate sector. Previously, the study modules had more of development theory and understanding cooperatives along with all the mainstream subjects such as financial management, marketing and so on. But the major portion was development theories. Now in the first year, we get to learn the basics of finance, marketing, HR and Operations. Along with that, there are 2 to 3 subjects specifically covering Rural Management, rural society management, development theories. So it is really nice as you can have multiple domain knowledge with a good mix.

Q. Any suggestions for MBA aspirants who are considering IRMA as their MBA destination?

It is very important to prepare for general knowledge, especially for IRMASAT. You must be thorough with the current affairs for the past one year. You should also read about the government policies with respect to rural issues implemented in the past 10 years, such as Ujala Scheme. They don’t want to know the details of the schemes, but your awareness about them is expected. For GD, 90% of the topics are from current affairs with respect to

rural, development or cooperative. Try to understand the origin of the B-school and the reason behind its inception. Also, you must be clear about the differentiating factors of the particular B-school from the rest. If you get to know the panellists, then go through their profile and do a bit of research on the papers they have published and what is their domain. Also, avoid bluffing! For instance, if I am a hockey player, I am expected to know who the current captain of the Indian Hockey team is. These are the little things that matter a lot. A

The MBA in Energy and Environment programme is a niche domain that is currently offering a lot of opportunities waiting to be tapped. We all know that Energy and Environment are two essential aspects behind every economic activity and is intrinsically as well as extrinsically linked with each other in satisfying the world’s basic needs. The management of this relationship between the energy sector and the ecological environment has become increasingly complex due to a paradigm shift in our perspective and outlook. These are global issues and have found a prominent place in all recent global debates like climate change, resource management, energy security, etc. An MBA in this sphere will equip the future professionals to become effective global managers with competence in managerial, economic, legal, political and technical aspects. They will serve as experts who provide the crucial link between the world of technology, business and sustainable development.

CORPORATE INTERVIEW - ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Energy sector: An emerging field with high potential

Advanc’edge MBA | MARCH 2019 | PAGE 36

The growing field of energy management requires people who are aware of the importance of sustainability. In an interview with Kalyani Majumdar, KHUSHAL TIPRE, Analyst and Management Consultant at Black & Veatch and an alumnus of Symbiosis Institute of International Business, takes us through his learning curve in the Energy sector.

Q. You got an MBA in Energy and Environment from Symbiosis Institute of International Business. What drew you to this field?

After finishing my Bachelor of Engineering from Mumbai University, I started working as a Planning and Co-ordinating Engineer with KEC International in Dhaka, Bangladesh. My job was to coordinate between the site activities and the Delhi office and give them weekly reports. As an engineer, I was majorly looking

after the technical aspects of the project. Back then, I used to feel that if I were good at the technical aspects of a project, then I was doing good work. Since I wanted to work in India, I took up an opportunity with Enercon India. This was not a conducive time to be in the energy sector, as between 2012 and 2014 business was very slow in the energy sector. And I realised that to grow in this field, only technical knowledge was not enough. I needed the financial knowledge of a project and understand all the aspects of a project that would help in sustaining a business in the commodity sector. Thus I decided to do an MBA. I didn’t want to go for marketing, finance or even operations. I wanted to stay in the energy sector.

Q. The world is moving towards renewable energy. What kind of growth do you see for this sector in the near future?

Nowadays, every sector is concerned with the sustainability of their businesses, and it is the same with energy sector as well. Many new technologies will keep getting introduced in India, and

these will change the scenario in many ways. I feel it is a good idea to streamline energy sources such as electricity, which would help in reducing the consumption of petrol and diesel and help us to optimise our fuel usage. It will happen in the future. This sector is evolving be it in the environment or finance aspect. And yes, there will be more jobs generated in this sector. Big companies with large investments are coming to India, in solar, wind energy and so on. We do have professionals from this field in India, but at present their number is limited and we do need more people who are aware of these technologies. Thus, courses offered at present by SIIB, IIT Delhi and few others in this sector are going to play a bigger role in the near future. Also, more awareness should be created regarding these courses as this field is very new in India as a career choice.

Q. Energy sector falls under the category of commodity business, so how is it different from retail business in terms of career growth? Payment and career growth in the

commodity business is a bit different from retail business. The revenue generation in commodity business depends heavily on government policies and regulations that are introduced for a stipulated time by the central government. Whereas the business of Amazon, Flipkart and the like are retail business and their functioning is very different. It is an open sector. So in the commodity sector, career growth in terms of salary is relatively slower as compared to retail business.

Q. Tell us a bit about your GDPI experience at SIIB.

SNAP is pretty similar to the CAT, so if you are preparing for CAT you can also sit for SNAP. My GDPI was very interesting. I remember they had a panel of experts from energy efficiency, environment regulation and planning and environment impact assessment sectors. The GD topics were general, one was the oil barrel crisis and another was about the monetary policies. During my PI, I was asked about my experience and they wanted to know the project execution steps. My profile was very relevant to the course that they were offering, so it was easy for me to connect the dots during

Internships play a big role in understanding the subject properly. There are topics — for instance, environment social impact — that deal with project financing, project life cycle and so on. These are real time concepts and you cannot learn them theoretically while sitting in a class. It is important to get hands on experience and understand the real time repercussions of implementing these concepts.

the interview. Also, later on it was easy for me to get good placements. The programme is in 4 quarters. In the first semester you will have all general topics, i.e., finance, operations and so on. From the second semester, you study coursespecific topics such as environment impact assessment, social impact assessment, regulatory policies, etc. You also have the option of doing a major thesis from the third semester. In hindsight, I feel that this course was the right decision as it strengthened my CV. However, I must add that even though the course will teach you everything, it is really up to you to utilise the knowledge.

Q. How important internships?

are

Internships play a big role in understanding the subject properly. There are topics — for instance, environment social impact — that deal with project financing, project life cycle and so on. These are real time concepts and you cannot learn them theoretically while sitting in a class. It is important to get hands on experience and understand the real time repercussions of implementing these concepts. Then there are theories that really look good on the blackboard, but cannot be implemented on site. So the financial, social and environment aspect is difficult to imagine until you start working in the field. I did three internships, and they helped me to get the relevant job profile.

Q. Tell us a bit about your current job role at Black & Veatch. How has an MBA changed your job role?

At Black & Veatch, my job involves analysing, management consulting, and advisory and planning of projects. I have to evaluate the

contracts and agreements. Before an MBA, I was only looking at the technical aspects, but now I work on the commercial aspects and evaluation of a project. As an engineer and an MBA, I look at the pros and cons of a project, and based on my reports, the banks decide to invest. With an MBA, you work at the management level and your scope of work becomes broader, and of course, with that, you also see career growth.

Q. Do you have any suggestions for MBA aspirants?

Your profile must be relevant to the chosen field. If you want to do any course, you should have a background to tell your story. When I see my resume I can see a story. Everything that is there on my resume had a logical reason behind it, and that reason can be anything. The question is whether you have the competency in the field that you are applying for or not. If someone has clarity on what field they enjoy working in and gather some experience working in that sector, then that would make it easier for the person to decide on which course to pursue. A

Despite being one of the most populous countries in the world, India’s expenditure in public health (as the ratio of GDP) is lower than that by even the low-income countries. While this expenditure is rising (from Rs 1.49 lakh Cr. in 2014-15 to Rs 2.25 lakh Cr. in 2017-18), it is still only about 1% of the total GDP. However, the big push towards public health gave birth to the National Health Policy 2017, which envisaged increasing of government health spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2025. Country’s low public-health spending is one reason why patients turn to the private sector for healthcare. WHO’s health financing profile (2017) indicated that the about 68% of total health expenditure was paid out-ofpocket. Political and economic debate aside, this means booming business for healthcare companies (including hospitals, medical devices, pharmaceuticals etc.) in India. This growth means that the industry is now increasingly becoming attractive for MBA graduates, as the skills required to run a successful healthcare system are more than what a medical professional possesses.

A career in communication, media and entertainment industry is an exciting one. It has incredible opportunities. MBA in Communication, Media and Entertainment is a good choice especially for the ones inclined towards the entertainment industry. The course lends a holistic view of the management aspect of the media. The main focus lies on the core industries as in Media, entertainment, design, lifestyle etc. In today’s world of instant communication, the media stays at the very core of our foundation. Print media still remains relevant and has stood the test of time with a host of publications, dailies, fortnightly, weeklies, monthly all giving information about events with supplement of suggestions and comments by learned people. And while it is still active, the concept is moving towards digitisation and is therefore quicker, more accessible, and allows for ease of updation. Thus an MBA helps the student to upgrade themselves in the field. The other realms of the media, like Advertising and PR, they too keep revolutionising their dynamics to adapt to the constant change. Newer technologies demand more professionals that are updated in these technologies. There’s always a scope for growth in this industry, and the constant influx of news, discoveries, or businesses leave us with so much to learn. The same can be said about the Entertainment industry. Entertainment industry has only grown from strength to strength in terms of its quality, so much so that it forms a major part of our economy.

ho Moved My Cheese has been a phenomenon since it was released. The story is about two mice, Scurry and Sniff, and two “littlepeople”, Hem and Haw. They have found a huge source of their favourite food — cheese, and it has becomes the centre of their lives. They are devastated when they arrive one morning and find the cheese gone. This is where the story splits in two. Scurry and Sniff quickly accept the loss of the cheese and go off. The littlepeople, because they have built their lives around the big cheese, cling to the loss and go hungry. Johnson’s message is to see change as a beginning, not the end. What they discover is that breaking through your fears makes you free. The book is old, but its valuable lesson is easily remembered: Do you have a “cheese” in your life that you believe will last forever?

hile picturing a Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist, one inevitably imagines a bespectacled, unfocused, absent-minded individual who lives more in the abstract world of science and theory than in the real, material world. And yet, this is exactly what Richard P Feynman, the said theoretical physicist, was not. He was a genius, no doubt, with a prodigiously scientific bent of mind, something that became apparent when, as young boy, he figured out how radios work, and went around repairing them where he lived. The book follows Feynman’s journey from New York to MIT in Massachusetts, Princeton to the Manhattan Project, from Brazil to Japan and back again. The narrative is filled with evidence of Feynman’s scathing wit and penchant for pranks. From cracking safes containing top secret US military documents, just because he was bored, giving advice on best ways to pickup girls at a bar, to learning to play the drums for a ballet, the reader finds ample evidence on the esoteric, and yet grounded, practical character of the Nobel Prize winner. This is a book that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere, and by anyone.

hich is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in ics nom ako common? Why do drug dealers still live with their Fre : le: Tit moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the Author: Steven Levitt and legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime? Stephen J Dubner These are just some of the questions that, in an unusual Publisher: HarperCollins pairing, University of Chicago economist Steven Levitt and New Price: `256 York Times journalist Stephen J Dubner try to answer in the Genre: Non-fiction enormously successful Freakonomics, a book that melds pop culture with economics. Levitt is something of an economist, but more of a social scientist using the tools of Microeconomics applied to other fields that happen to catch his interest (often having something to do with cheating, corruption, crime, etc.) Even though this may sound dull, it is quite the opposite, as the authors use straightforward analysis to turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is not an in depth analysis of the issues presented, so you needn’t expect to see any technical economics in there, but the book will certainly give you plenty to talk about, as well as a fun read.
