If you’re new to knitting, or if your usual choice of makes are more in the cuddly toy line, then you might be wary of lace, thinking all those complex charts and cobwebby shawls aren’t for you. Well think again! Lace knitting doesn’t have to be scarily intricate or old-fashioned, as our fashion collection starting on page 14 shows. Pop a pretty lace motif around the edge of a plain cardi, knit an open stitch in an aran yarn, or fake the look with a clever drop-stitch trick, and as you can see, the result is lace knitting the modern, fuss-free way. If you’re still nervous, check out our feature on page 30, The Lazy Knitter’s Guide to Lace. Or you can always start with our step-by-step beginners’ cushion on page 35. We hope you love your free Dexter the Labrador pattern – you’ll find it on the extra leaflet on the back of your magazine. It’s another fantastic Deradog design by Amanda Berry, and there are three more on our website that are free to download – find them at letsknit.co.uk. If you’re feeling lucky this month then you’ve come to the right place. Not only do we have a bumper selection of giveaways worth over £6500 on page 60, but if you vote in the British Knitting & Crochet Awards on page 69 you’re in with a chance of winning one of three great prizes, including over £600 of knitty goodies and fabulous floral treats from Appleyard London. Good luck!

Even novice knitters will be able to join in the fun, as this pattern is easy to follow and quick to make up. This little top can’t help but bring a smile and it’s also really simple to knit. With basic shaping and a touch of Swiss darning, it’s a great choice for new knitters looking to make their first foray into garments. The classic watermelon shades are ideal for summer, but the pattern would look just as good knitted in one colour or in a stripe pattern of your choice!
Claudia the MERMAID KNIT SUSIE JOHNS’ MYTHICAL MAKE!
With her long red hair, sparkly jewels and super-cute expression, this magical mascot certainly knows how to make a splash! Named by LK reader Amanda Jane Davies, we think Claudia would make a fabulous friend for children and grown-ups alike. If you are new to creating facial features, be sure to read our handy panel.
