publisher’s notes susen sawatzki adnews is making a subtle change in the format of publishing beginning with this edition and evolving with each subsequent edition. You may have noticed that the name on the edition is “Creative Services Annual” rather than Autumn or Q4. There shall remain four basic editions annually with each taking a focus on a segment of the creative industry. However, the release of the editions will coincide with events in the industry. The fifth edition is the American Advertising Awards—the ADDY Winners Book edition that breaks and is distributed at the ADDY Awards Gala that usually takes place in February or early March. The ADDY Winners Book also enjoys the general circulation of the regular adnews editions. The adnews Film Annual breaks in coincidence with the Sundance Film Festival

every January and enjoys distribution there via the Utah Film Commission’s hospitality headquarters, as well as adnews’ regular mailed distribution. We are exploring partnerships to add one or more events to align with in order to add presence and circulation to the other editions: Creative Services Annual, Print Annual, Media Annual. If you have ideas, I welcome them with open arms. The new and improved web site, adnewsonline.com will launch some time towards the end of 2015. The site is designed to be the virtual Marketplace for Creative Thinking. It invites you to go there often and see creative selections in the Creative Showcase, search for creative partnerships through the Creative Searches tool and see News Briefs in a timely manner. This new digital platform will be supported by e-adnews, an opt-in email messenger to deliver breaking and fresh news about this wild and exciting industry as well as a more robust commitment to social media so we meet you where you live and keep you entertained, informed and inspired.

The other outlet for adnews is its digital edition on ISSUU. It is an amazing phenomenon that the readership on that platform has nearly doubled the mail-out quantity of each edition in 2014 and 2015. It is easy to measure the amount of people who have peered into the pages of adnews on ISSUU­—often in the 11,000 range—but really, after the 7,500 editions are printed and mailed out, who’s to say how many people have physically “visited” an edition that arrives to an office? I can tell you how many I mailed, I cannot tell you what is typically known as “pass-along”. So unless I can prove it, I don’t talk about it. But the bottom line is that this enticing industry and the ads and stories that unveil the mysteries associated with the creative industry are intriguing and it’s you and your wondrous creations that make the pages of adnews worthy of its growing readership. We realize that one of the highest values of adnews is connecting people within an industry who often never have the opportunity to meet and discover one another. It is in the spirit of building community through the offering of synergistic resources that adnews is adding topical annuals to its portfolio. For 2016, we will add Utah Educated, an annual that provides resources to three major segments: 1- Employers looking for interns as well as workforce; 2- Educational Institutions looking to align with employers for curriculum advancement and accelerated placement; 3- Enrollees ranging from post high school to seasoned professionals looking to ratchet up for career advancement and enhanced relevance. The Utah Educated edition will be rich with side-by-side matrices illustrating the different educational programs, certificates, degrees with time frames, range of costs and placement potential. In Utah, as well as nationwide, the workforce supply pipeline is at a trickle while the demand is exploding exponentially. I believe the adnews edition of Utah Educated and its digital and web platform will collect and intelligently aggregate the details of the challenge to optimize population while meeting the demands of the technology sector that the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the Economic Development Corporation of Utah are successfully growing.

PRODUCTION BEGINS FOR ABC’S BLOOD AND OIL AND HBO SERIES

Vicki Varela, managing director for the Office of Tourism, Film and Global Branding said, “Utah’s tourism advertising firm has the privilege of promoting one of the most beautiful places on earth. We took this RFP process very seriously, and so did the firms that applied. We were impressed by the creative ideas and strategic thinking of the applicants. Our renewed partnership with Struck enables us to take all of our work to the next level, building on Utah’s $7.4 billion tourism economy.” Struck handles creative development and strategy with Love Communications responsible for media buying. This partnership has seen significant success over the past three years of The Mighty 5 campaign. In addition to the economic growth seen during the campaign, the campaign has received several prestigious industry awards, including two US Travel ESTO Mercury Awards and back-to-back platinum Adrian awards. Prior to The Mighty 5, the duo was highly recognized for the unprecedented Montgomery Tunnel graphics mimicking Southern Utah’s Arches national park inside a San Francisco commuter tunnel. Struck has been the ad agency of record for the Utah Office of Tourism since 2005. Their contract was renewed for a three-year term in 2012. This new contract is for five years—a practice being adopted by Utah’s State Purchasing department. A request for proposal went out in early April and a committee of nine individuals made up of Department of Tourism staff and board members reviewed some 900 pages of written proposals. The initial list of seven contenders was narrowed to three and Struck/Love chosen from there. The initial list included Super Top Secret, GumCo, Rain, with co-finalists, Richter7 and Riester. “It’s truly a privilege to continue our 10-year partnership with the Utah Office of Tourism. It’s an exciting challenge to build upon the success we’ve shared with the UOT, and evolve the marketing to inspire more travelers to discover the state,” said Jeremy Chase, director of Client Services at Struck. “I started on the Utah Office of Tourism account with the conception of The Mighty 5 campaign three years ago and, in the time

since, the account has become a natural extension of my identity. I love this work. All of us on this team love sharing the joy and thrill and wonder of experiencing Utah. At Struck, we greatly value and respect our relationship with UOT, so we poured our passion and our intellect into this latest RFP opportunity. The Utah Film Commission is eager to forge a lasting relationship with networks as a long-running television series stabilizes the job base in Utah’s film industry and brings revenue to the state. Utah also caught HBO’s eye for two series, Westworld a series created by screen writer Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight and Interstellar) starring Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood, and Mosaic created and directed by Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Oceans Eleven and Erin Brockovich). The Governor’s Office of Economic Development approved tax incentives for the productions that expect to spend more than $44 million for the duration of the collective productions. Earlier in the year, Utah hosted feature film, Code of Honor starring Steven Seagal and two indie projects, Tim Timmerman: Hope for America and Being Charlie which starred Rob Riener.

ELI KIRK BLENDS WITH RISER Eli Kirk acquired Riser, a Utah-based creative agency that produces work for global brands ranging from Disney and Pepsico to National Geographic and Google. Through the acquisition, which was formalized on August 1, the two agencies are now housed together in Provo, forming a 67-person team that will fuse Eli Kirk’s approach to brand development, comprehensive marketing strategy and interactive capabilities with Riser’s deep creative experience, industry leadership and national audience. “This move strengthens our profile as one of the top marketing and creative firms in the region,” said Eli Kirk CEO Lance Black. “Through the union of our talented teams and their combined experience and expertise, we stand better poised than ever to serve Utah’s best companies while expanding the breadth of work available to Riser’s national client base.” As part of the acquisition, Riser CEO Michael Janda, who brings more than 20 years of experience as a designer and agency executive, has joined the company’s management team as an equity partner and chief creative officer. In that role, he will oversee creative work for all of the agency’s clients.

Q&A Big Things from WeLikeSmall

Creating a first-of-its-kind collaborative crowd-sourcing platform that would allow students and the US military to work together on projects is no small task. Being asked to document the whole process from multiple locations across the entire country while building and implementing said platform feels enormous. Putting these gargantuan tasks in the hands of a company that prides itself on its diminutive nature seems… counterintuitive? But this is hardly the case for the team at welikesmall. Six-plus years ago Mike Kearn and Paul Solomon were both working at large agencies. They got together with a developer, Corey Hankey, and decided to strike out on their own and form a new agency. They had a very specific idea in mind for this new agency: no matter how big the work got, keep the agency small. I sat down with now Executive Producer, Corey Hankey, to discuss the deceptively conflicted nature of welikesmall. adnews: Where did welikesmall, the name and the ideal, come from? corey hankey: It came from believing that being small and nimble was more important than large and cumbersome. As a small team we can react quickly to our clients needs without unnecessary layers to keep project and timelines on track. Being smaller also allows us to be more selective in the work we do by taking the projects that are the most interesting to us. According to Corey, early on the team learned the value of empowering each member of the team entirely within his or her realm of responsibility. “You’d be surprised how much work two people can get done when you let them focus,” said Corey. AN: I love your name and what it stands for, so tell me what’s small about working with big names like Google and the US Air Force? CH: Smaller staff doesn’t mean smaller projects. Larger clients and larger projects need unique skill sets to accomplish the goals of their campaigns. Most of our staff has a diversified skill set that allows them to help in multiple areas on a project that allows us to be small and work for bigger clients. Corey continued by saying that managing a new company is a learning process. They knew going into this venture that they would have to adjust expectations, both their own and their clients, because of their smaller size. But they learned quickly that their smaller size is what made that learning easier. Their clients have appreciated that the people they work with on the front end are exactly the same people doing the work on the back end. Without layers of titles and approvals the workflow was much more efficient and clients preferred getting answers quickly. AN: What’s the trick to pulling off massive projects while retaining a

small core team? CH: We have learned a lot over the past six years about how to pull all hands on deck at the right time on big projects. We plan projects so we only need the right staff on them at the right times which allows us to do more than one project at a time while we work on larger projects. Welikesmall has a full-time staff of just nine in their Salt Lake office with a few contractors that work with them occasionally. Generally these contractors are necessary when things like geography are prohibitive. AN: Success for many firms is measured by growth, what does success look like for welikesmall? CH: Success is progressing our trade and making sure we still love what we do at the end of the day. Corey said that maintaining the work/life balance is paramount. Each member of the team knows his or her responsibility and works towards that. It’s not about being at a desk 80 hours a week; it’s about getting the job done and getting it done well. AN: What does the immediate future hold for welikesmall? CH: Trying to balance our direct clients with our Agency clients to have an even mix. One might anticipate that a major downside to having a small team is having to turn down work. Corey said that this has happened in the past. The team at welikesmall isn’t intimidated by large tasks, but there are some projects that they realistically cannot support. “Any task, any campaign is doable,” Corey said, “but we don’t have the dedicated staff to keep supporting ongoing projects.” AN: And the long term? CH: Long term goals are to keep the size we have while trying to grow our content production side of the business and seek more direct clients. From its beginning, welikesmall has thrived on its initial goal; keep it small. On the service side this means being more manageable. On the creative side this means being nimble and being able to bypass all those layers of approval. Back in 2012 welikesmall launched a huge project with American Express and the sporting events they sponsored. The challenge was to create a digital interface for spectators at events where cell phones were not allowed. Corey said this project proved to the welikesmall team something they maintain to this day. “Not only can we solve any problem,” he said, “but we have the creative to make the solution exceptional.” By: Matt Bergstrom

A Tribute to Stephen A. Hales

Stephen A. Hales, a pillar in Utah’s advertising and design industry for several decades, passed away January 21, 2015 as a result of an aggressive brain cancer. An extraordinarily talented and driven individual, Stephen gave selflessly of his capabilities and time both in and out of his career. He owned and operated an advertising agency in Provo since 1982, and the business continues to operate today, thanks to his vision and dedication. His work received numerous awards—local, national, and international—acknowledging his creative talent and innovative design. He was an adjunct professor at both Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, and served on the Provo City Council. He was a devoted husband and loving father of eight children, and cared deeply for the happiness of his family. Stephen is sorely missed by family, friends, colleagues, and his community, but those who knew him are grateful for his influence and legacy—not only his creative and business skills, but his integrity, kindness, and compassion. JUSTIN ETHINGTON IS A MEDIOCRE CREATIVE AT BEST Volt Marketing Does the Plumbing for the Industry “Check your gut, check the data, check your gut, check your data and use the two in concert with one another—and know what to ignore,” says Justin Ethington about his personal process in achieving reliable data for the clients of his company, Volt Marketing, a marketing research company in Utah. “If you give someone bad direction with research, they could have a bad year,” he admits. But with solid, reliable data and advice, a company can have a 20 to 25 percent advantage right out of the gates. Justin calls it a very smart ROI and says, “Data points can steer things in a direction to get much closer to market share advantage.”

“Google and Facebook are great interfaces, but you can’t understand motivation or a person from an algorithm. That human connection—what motivates someone to do something ultimately boils down to that connection. You need the math and the poetry blended together to tell the true story,” concludes Justin.

He likens research to plumbing because in order to be functional and fully integrative to the whole, it has to be designed and applied at the beginning of the process. “It’s the basis of where everything starts,” he says and that very reason is why he has remained a one-person organization for Volt’s 11 years in business. He wants the freedom to do what he wants to do, the way he wants to do it, and not end up an HR manager instead of deep in the details of research. He thrives on trusted, eye-to-eye contact with his clients and feels that’s when, together, they can extend the rational limits of expectation, break rules, and change the trajectory of a company’s success. He is mistaken about being creatively mediocre which he selfdeclared while attending Northwestern. It is creativity mixed with math in all the right places and influenced by experience and gut to extract real data and present it in a meaningful way. The methodology he accesses is Panel Research sometimes combined with Conjoint Analysis. With panel research, a sample of representative customers is recruited and incentivized to be available for response. “It’s like an on-call focus group—you get fast turnaround. You can know within hours what your best customers want you to do. And the nice thing is that you don’t have to be spamming your customer base constantly,” explained Justin. Conjoint Analysis simulates a real-world marketplace in helping fine tune product or service features. The process predicts what combination of features will drive sales. While this looks straightforward, it can be difficult to extract valid information from people. He harmonizes listening with ignoring, paying attention to bias, motivation and behavior. 12 adnews |

Backstory

With a Masters degree in Integrated Marketing from Northwestern, Justin hit it big with a position at 3M—one of the largest corporations in the US, ranked in the Fortune U.S. 100. It was timed with the tsunamic surge of the dot-com boom and Justin felt as though he was watching the most exciting of economic times from behind the fence. “My boss had worked there from before I was born. The waiting list to get underground parking was 11 years. I was claustrophobic and felt like I was missing everything.” He left after a year and a half, returned to Utah and took at job at Ancestry.com then known as Myfamily.com, conducting research for one of the sustainable, startup dot-coms of that era. But he still hungered for more and launched Volt Marketing. He gave himself three months to get one client or bail. In three months he had two clients and before he knew it he was making more money than at his job and was working with the likes of Disney, TD Ameritrade, Pinterest, Better Homes and Gardens, Audible.com, you get the idea.


Richter7’s new leadership team is a personification of life’s desires realized. Two of the four members of the leadership team came up through the ranks from intern to leadership. Life is good for President Tal Harry and CFO Tony Robinson who started as runners, which is what interns did 20 years ago (remember, before fax machines, email and the cloud?). For Walt McRoberts, vice president/director of Media Services, his dream came true when he targeted Richter7 as the ideal agency to express his skills and talents. He had worked for local agencies as well as client side when he came to realize that he was intrigued by the larger-than-life essence of creativity that Richter7 held. “Richter7 is just known—they have this random presence. People who are not even in the industry know Richter7 and associate Richter7 with great creative. I wanted to be aligned with an agency that used creativity to make impact and add my digital skills to their recipe.” Tim Brown, partner, Ad/PR/Social Media has held ownership since 2001 when he, Peggy Lander, Dave Newbold and Scott Rockwood purchased FJCandN from Robert Fotheringham and Bruce Jensen and Richter7 shook into existence. When he first walked into Fotheringham & Associates in 1988 when it was located at 215 South State Street in downtown Salt Lake City, a stone’s throw from its new offices on 150 South State Street, he noticed a chic, red couch in the lobby. The style of the place appealed to Tim and he took the job offer over another option. Richter7 is the extension of one of the longest-standing independent, local advertising agencies in Utah. And this summer, it is turning the page on a new chapter in its book. The new leadership team is focused on operations nuts and bolts as well as heritage and legacy to lead the agency forward. Remaining in ownership but leaving corporate management roles are Scott Rockwood and Dave Newbold. Dave spends half the time at Richter7 writing and creative directing. Scott is fully retired from Richter7 functional duties. As already mentioned, prior chapters included, Fotheringham & Associates founded in 1972, FJCandN, FJCN/W&R, FJCandN again and now Richter7 in a new location with new leadership and a new philosophy about taking down the walls—literally and figuratively. The new location is designed with an open space that is intended to invite a collaborative environment with dedicated areas for privacy or meetings…or jam sessions (Tim’s in a band he named Random). And yes, there are games—Xbox, foosball—because we all know that fun and diversion can be the answer to finding that illusive solution. Tal, Tim, Walt and Tony were gracious to give me a tour of the new space before it was

New Leadership, New Paradigm fully completed. Most people remember it as the old Zim’s store. Renovated to its historic luster, it is also the home of Impact Hub. They laughed as they explained how moving to this space is actually a step back in time. This building housed a carriage manufacturer and was built in 1896. The Richter7 offices just prior, on 400 West, were in the Ford Motor Company Building built in 1924. The figurative walls that are dissolving are the silos of media and content. The former offices provided four walls for every person and separate departments for broadcast, print, digital, public relations and social media. This new collaborative, media-agnostic Richter7 is evolving to adapt to the changing world. Tim has seen the larger arc of evolution firsthand having been at the agency since 1988 and in public relations since 1980. He likes the staggering pace of change we are seeing today. He says, “That makes this business exhilarating. It’s always been exciting, but when you add that element to it, that’s what attracts creative people. We love the challenge of making those solutions come to life.” There is an art to recognizing a media platform as a passing fad, but there’s no shame in optimizing it in the moment of its popularity. An impression made at the right time, on the right platform is still an impression that adds to the accumulation of impressions within the communication strategy. Walt adds, “There is a tendency to get myopic in your own generation and think that the platform where you live represents the rest of the world. On the back end, you have to look at it holistically through viable solutions. We are talking to one consumer who is getting information from different channels. Nothing is just a TV ad anymore. You look at the form of the content and then apply it to

the strategy.” Tony has worked in many capacities since his internship in 1993 while attending the university for an engineering degree. His aspirations to be an engineer gave way to the allure of the magical world of advertising. As CFO, he is as knowledgeable about the driving trends in media in order to ensure that the revenue objectives are realized. He laughs and says, “There’s always a shiny new toy,” referencing the social media channels as well as the optimization and measuring tools that pop up every day. He welcomes the challenge of factoring the costs and benefits with regard to the intended financial results. Tal has some 21 cumulative years with the agency and cites a perfect example of how a collaborative structure is the sustainable model for an agency today. “Look at how Facebook alone breaks down the walls of how an agency works—image, content, strategy, analytics, media—it forces the real-time collaboration of an entire agency to figure out an opportunity together.” Tim comments, “When has that ever happened in our world where in 15 minutes you see traction and results? Then decide whether to boost or pull back while analyzing comments and providing feedback.” In combination with secondary research, the client is receiving very rich information that Walt refers to as the matrix of message, media and timing. “Everything is changing so fast. We are ready,” concludes Tal. They are poised with every team member having adapted to the practice of a holistic approach. TMG’s Vickie Panek has an Eye for the Right Match Modeling and acting haven’t always been the most reputable of industries. Plenty of so-called talent agents have made fortunes for themselves over the years by exploiting the dreams of hopefuls. In fact, sadly, exploitation and dishonesty have almost been hallmarks of the talent industry through the years. Such practices were the stimulus for the creation of TMG, Talent Management Group, Inc. Vickie Panek spent many years as a runway model and actress, worked in various marketing environments plus years in the corporate world. She reflects on how the broad experiences informed and shaped her. “It definitely helped me to understand talent, having worked on set and in related environments. I think part of TMG’s success has been our ability to understand and relate to all kinds of people.” The TMG system has worked very well for more than 20 years. Vickie has developed an eye for spotting talent—and an ear too. At one point, she met with a very experienced model and immediately recognized something that the talent had not considered before. Vickie said, “She now does a lot of voiceover work, but at the time she didn’t know she had this ability.” Vickie and her highly skilled staff look at people in a broader sense, because “we want them to be versatile and truly become a strong asset for the agency.” Finding success in a major market, such as New York or Los Angeles, can be challenging for talent. If a talent lives in a mid-sized market such as Utah, it is a perfect landscape to develop their skills and abilities, all the while becoming more versatile. When actors and models are multi-talented, it allows TMG to be a stronger partner with producers and creatives. Another key to TMG’s success is finding the right job for the talent—and that the talent is right for the job. Being a talent agent is

demanding and time consuming. Vickie believes that relationship building is as important as finding the right talent for the job. Producers are looking for a partner that they can trust and rely on morning, noon and night. The goal is to connect producers with qualified talent who can work together and build lasting, professional relationships. Proper matchmaking means ensuring that the talent TMG promotes is right for the job in terms of skill, look, ability and professionalism. It also means matching personalities and temperaments whenever possible. Vickie tells the story of one of her greatest successes in terms of this matchmaking. There was no way that she could have predicted the outcome of a long-standing professional relationship between a producer and her talent. Vickie’s talent struggled for six years trying to get pregnant, and almost gave up, when her producer friend and his wife offered to become the surrogate birth parents. Soon ….a

baby girl was born. Vickie’s talent came to her in tears and said, ‘You are the Godmother. If you hadn’t booked me with that producer, I never would have gotten to know him. Because of that, I now have this little girl.’” Vickie said, “This type of experience is not only rewarding, but a constant reminder of why we do what we do. And why we love what we do.” The talent industry isn’t as much about glitz and glamour as it is about people, dreams, friendships and community. Vickie continues, “A while back, a producer referred us to someone. He said, ‘Call Vickie; she has a gift.’ Whatever that meant, I was really tickled to hear that. That’s exactly what we want to be—a part of their team.” Ultimately, Vickie is not just a talent agent or even a problem solver. She is a people person who is in a unique position to further people’s careers, put them in good situations and give them opportunities. Susie McCarty Shapes Utah’s Talent Industry for 40 Years Most people dream of being famous—a fashion model on Milan’s runways or a movie star walking the red carpet. We dream we will be discovered by a scout while shopping at the local grocery store, but in the day-today world of voice talent, models and actors, many people don’t realize just how much goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to find and prepare a diverse, gifted and professional talent pool. Susie McCarty is a living legend among talent agents and is largely responsible for helping to get Utah’s talent industry up off the ground. According to Susie, “The rollercoaster ride started when I was probably 37 and decided to do this.” It was the early 1970s, and friend Arthur Pembleton told her that he needed extras for some commercials he was shooting. Susie did such a fabulous job, Arthur encouraged her to open a casting company. McCarty Casting was born in her and her husband’s club, the McCarty Beer Joint in Emigration Canyon. The casting business was growing and Susie decided to expand her agency to include model talent. She was no stranger to modeling; Susie modeled for the Keith O’Brien Company as a young country girl in saddle oxfords and grew into a career model working in New York, Las Vegas and Salt Lake. She began teaching modeling classes to cultivate talent locally and guarantee the quality of the models she was placing. This required more space and she found the perfect spot in the lower level of what was then the Hilton Hotel on 500 South and 200 West in downtown Salt Lake. Her husband, Ray, built her a runway, and friend Ben Burns, a renowned stylist, began referring modeling prospects. Susie began training up a generation of creatives to fill a burgeoning need. She remarks, “Through the ‘70s and ‘80s and the early ‘90s, there was so much modeling work here [in Utah]. We were fifth in the nation booking jobs.” Icons like Eileen Ford and Wilhelmina came and recruited from Susie’s talent pool. She provided talent for half a dozen area malls that put on five or six fashion shows a year. Each. She also produced fashion shows for prestigious fundraisers and created the cabaret show series at the Hilton’s Room at the Bottom.

By then, she had transformed the lower level of the Hilton into a talent hub with the McCarty Talent Agency, Ben Burns’ Salon, Robert Brantley’s photo studio, The Room at the Bottom, and the liquor store. It was where you wanted to be. Susie got together with a couple colleagues, photographer Stephen Wayda and writer Sharon Loya, and revolutionized the way fashion newspaper advertising was done. Up until that time, most newspaper advertising was illustrated. Susie, Stephen and Sharon invested in producing a mock-up of a newspaper ad with photographed models. They presented to the advertising department at ZCMI, and the concept took off. Other retailers soon caught on, and Susie was supplying models for Castleton’s, The Chalk Garden, Auerbach’s, Great Garb, Grand Central—you name it! The local film industry was growing as well with Chuck Sellier Jr.’s “Grizzly Adams” series

and his other shows, network television series “Touched by and Angel” and “Promised Land,” as well as television commercials. In the early ‘90s, local companies began selling out to national conglomerates. The local modeling industry dwindled but Susie continued to place models globally from a now-vast talent pool of actors, voice-over talents and models. She discontinued the training and turned her focus to connecting the right talent with the right jobs, though she will still help to refine someone’s walk or state of mind. Susie points out, “I have a lot of knowledge to pass on to people.” Though she suspects they are thinking, “Look at this old broad, what is she going to teach me?” Susie’s answer? “Little. Do. They. Know.” — complete with a mischievous smile. After nearly going under with the recession in 2008, 2014 was the best year since that near-death experience. Today, most of the work for her agency comes through the casting side thanks to Utah’s growing film and commercial industry as well as online retailers like Overstock.com. She has great respect for models and actors. They have to put themselves on the line every day and face rejection. She says to them, “Just go, do your best, be dependable, be on time, be prepared, show up and do what you love to do. Be thankful that you have the audition.” But the best, most rewarding payoff to this crazy roller coaster ride is when she sees people’s childhood, even life-long dreams come true—no matter how long it takes. Frank Gerrish is an example of realizing his dream in his late 50s. Once his family was raised, he took his Salt Lake acting career and went to Los Angeles and is the picture of succes with the Screen-Actor’s Guild rates and residuals. When Susie talks about her history and what made her successful over the years, she speaks most about honesty and integrity. TOM LOVE RECEIVES ADVERTISING FEDERATION’S TOP HONOR The Silver Medal is the highest honor the advertising profession can give a person and represents a lifetime of achievement and success. Recipients are outstanding in both their professions and their communities, not only making great advertisements and giving great advice to clients but also contributing to the industry as a whole by improving industry standards, creative excellence and social responsibility.

Tom isn’t just a smart, hard-working agency guy (though he certainly is those things). Tom is just as passionate in his community as he is in his work. He served as the chairman of the United Way of Salt Lake’s Board of Directors for three terms in the past and remains actively engaged in the organization on several levels today. In addition to that work, he serves on the boards of Utah Foundation, Utah Symphony/Utah Opera and the University of Utah College of Fine Arts. He also works to pass on his knowledge and experience as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Communications at the University of Utah.

Tom began his career in television sales — and not the kind you find at the furniture store. He served on the Sales Advisory Board for ABC Television Network over the eight states of the Intermountain Region before going on to be the general manager of KTVX-Channel 4 in Utah for more than a decade. Prior to that time even, Tom was in sales with AT&T, KUTV-Channel 2 and TCI Cablevision.

Part of Tom’s appeal is his hands-on approach to every facet of life. In addition to all his community involvement, Tom invests considerable time each year into training his employees to make sure they have the tools and knowledge they need to excel. At home, he is the proud father of two beautiful children (one boy and one girl) and has been married to Jamie for more than 25 years.

He rolled all that experience forward to found Love Communications with his brother Rich Love and their colleague Preston Wood in 1999. In 2004, Alan Reighard joined the team, and the four of them began to really make waves. Today, their agency employs more than 40 people and has been honored with awards like “Small Business of the Year” (2003, Salt Lake Chamber), “Outstanding Partner for Community Change” (2006, United Way of Salt Lake), and one of Utah’s “Best Businesses to Work For” (five times in the six years between 2006-2011).

For Tom to receive this award in the 50th year of its existence is no small wonder. Tom’s own father, Robert Love, received the award 30 years ago in 1985, and Robert’s business partner, Richmond Harris, in the Harris & Love agency was the inaugural recipient in 1965. In a way, this honor connects the Love family and the advertising profession together in a way few others can claim. Congratulations Tom. You earned it.

The Silver Medal isn’t Tom’s only award either. It’s more like the culmination of a long and prestigious career of awards. Molina Healthcare honored Tom with a “Community Champions” award in 2009, and United Way of Salt Lake named him its “Compassionate Leader of the Year” in 2011. As far back as 2002, Tom was honored by the Utah Advertising Federation as its “Professional of the Year”, and the reasons are obvious.

C. Michael Foster was awarded the American Advertising Federation Utah’s posthumus Silver Medal Award 2015 alongside Tom Love. If you¹ve been in the Utah ad market for the any of the past 30 years or so, you¹ve probably got a good story to tell about Mike Foster.

Mike was the guy who put two dozen live babies on an actual, moving conveyor belt for Pioneer Valley Hospital. They guy who turned a Dee¹s restaurant into a discotheque, and the guy for whom the ADDY Judge¹s Choice Award was created (since a No More Homeless Pets PSA was ineligible to win Best of Show.) As the CD/VP/Creative Head for Gardiner Marketing; Borders, Perrin & Norrander; EvansGroup; and R&R Partners, Mike created some of the most memorable and enduring ad campaigns to even come out of Utah, winning hundreds of awards in the process, including the One Show, Clio, Effie, National ADDY, and more.
