Dodson...past and present If you are married, if you are part of a family, if you work for a school district, if you work for a large company, if you work for a small company, if you work for a hospital, if you are a volunteer, if you belong to a church, “You are on a Team. A teacher with 18 years experience shared with me what her year was like at school. It was teamwork she said, with a principal who led this team of teachers to extraordinary accomplishments in test scores and enthusiasm for learning by the students. Teachers shared ideas and helped each other problem solve. There is no limit to what can be accomplished if it doesn’t matter who gets the credit. A few years ago I met a family who owned a farm in Oklahoma. They had school age children. Everyone worked on the farm. What was most interesting the parents allowed their children to have a voice in the running of the farm. Every Sunday night they gathered round the kitchen table to discuss the family business. Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success.

On a personal note, I have been a fan of the San Antonio Spurs basketball team since David Robinson and Tim Duncan played together. One of the reasons why I’m a fan is because their program is built for teamwork. There is not a player on the team that acts like he is the star. That includes Tim Duncan who is their leader on the court. Coach Gregg Popavich just won the coach of the year which is well deserved but sometimes his temper gets the best of him and he forgets himself. I am a huge fan of John Wooden’s style of coaching. I almost needed the “smelling salt when Texas Tech hired Bob Knight. For those of you who are not familiar with smelling salt, it is used when people faint. There is a video out that runs seven minutes and it explains the Spurs style of play. You can google “San Antonio Spurs - the beautiful game and even hear a little Mozart. It is most enjoyable. Talent wins games but teamwork plus intelligence wins championships. Thanks for Reading, Tilly McDaniel

TEXAS

From Page 10B careful to place them back in place if the hole is too small. Once we find an adequate hole, bait is dropped and before long, the white string goes taught and the low intensity tug of war is on. Fighting a crawfish is a practice in patience and finesse. The tug of war usually takes a while to win. If you don’t pull hard enough, the crawdad plants its numerous legs into the mud and digs in to protect his new meal. Pull too hard and you jerk the bait right out of their claws. It’s a skill you learn from experience and feel. At first my boy can’t get the hang of it as he keeps pulling the bait away from the crawdad. Thirty

minutes later he’s still in the hole. Soon, however, we can see the bait near the burrow’s entrance and clamped to it are two crawdad pincers. The crawfish is trying hard to put on the breaks with his many pairs of legs but he’s too interested in the raw strip of bacon to let go. After the bait and claws breech the surface, we can see its dark, bb sized eyes looking up at us. When he spots us, he lets go of the bait and retreats. Hunger pangs are a strong motivator and within seconds, he’s gripping the bacon that my son dropped back in the hole. The fight is back on. I don’t know if the crawdad is tired, hungry, or both but when he emerges this time, he doesn’t spook. When I reach down to pick him up by the shell he does

his best to reach back and pinch me with his claws. At first my nine year old is apprehensive about holding his first crustacean as he’s afraid of the pinch. I let the crawdad pinch me first to let him see that it doesn’t hurt. I set the crawdad down on the mud and it instinctively turns to face me with its claws up in defense. While I distract him, my son picks him up for a closer inspection. He’s proud of his quarry. So proud he puts the crawdad back in the mud right next to the water. The crawdad scoots backwards accelerated by the tail flip that he uses to swim and escape predators and is soon back in the water. When we are gone, he’ll crawl from the water and dig a new burrow. Hopefully we’ll catch him again another day.

Quartz Mountain News Where did May go? Wasn’t it just Mother’s Day? June is upon us and that means lots of things are happening at Quartz Mountain. Coming up this weekend are Oklahoma’s Free Fishing Days, June 7-8. On these two days of the year fishing licenses are not required to fish most state waters. There are a few exemptions. If you are fishing in Lake Texoma and wander over to the Texas side, you will not need a license on Saturday, butt you will need one on Sunday, as Texas has a one-day “free fishing event – Saturday, June 7. Some cities have ponds and/or lakes that requite a city permit/license. Before you fish any of these waters, ask if they have “Free Fishing on June 7-8. Oklahoma City and Tulsa are promoting the Free Fishing weekend on their Web sites. Confirm before you start fishing. If you are coming to Quartz Mountain Nature Park this weekend and wish to fish and you want to possibly catch a

fish, it is recommended that you fish the North Fork of the Red River rather than Lake Altus-Lugert. The lake is still in the early recovery stages from the devastating Golden Algae fish kill of 2013. Fish did survive and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has stocked some fish. However, fish are very few and very far between- very few. Fish the river below the dam and above the low water crossing if you want to have a chance at catching fish. ODWC has stocked the river with catfish. The most recent reports were of catfish being caught near the base of the dam. This is accessible on the north side of the river, by a trail from picnic shelter Number Two. Other upcoming events:
Area 4-H campers will be at Quartz Mountain June 9-13.
The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain will be June 14–29.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahomans looking to try something new with the family this summer may want to give fishing a try June 7-8 during Oklahoma’s Free Fishing Days, which allow people to fish without state fishing licenses or permits. “Free Fishing Days gives people a chance to just ‘test the waters’ and see if they would enjoy the sport, said Ken Cunningham, assistant chief of fisheries for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC). “We are confident they will.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver

• According to statisticians, about 200 people a year die while watching -- not playing -- football. • Collective nouns are fascinating, especially when one kind of animal has multiple ones that can be used. Take ducks, for instance: A group of them can be called a flock, a badling, a brace, a plump, a sord or a waddling. If you see them on water you can call them a bunch, a paddling or a raft; and a group of ducks flying together is known variously as a skein, a string or a team. • Noted industrialist John D. Rockefeller was the son of a notorious con man, William Avery Rockefeller. • It takes about one minute for blood to make a complete circuit of your body. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
