It is with great pride that Mr. Awa says the mall will be fully functional in October as a few new places are still in the process of opening their doors. He adds “We have every intention of doing a big event in October for this occasion”. As for the holy month of Ramadan, the mall management set big screens in every café and in several restaurants in order to allow people to follow their favorite series and shows while enjoying a nice coffee or a great meal. Other from the special offers provided independently by several stores, the management put together the “shop and win” program that gives the shopper a chance to win an Opel car, so if you are looking for the latest design of sunglasses, watch, hand bag, shoes, cloths or just want to relax and have a coffee, go ahead and shop at your own risk!

Rafia Gallery

The Rafia Gallery situated in the boulevard mall plays a major role for Arab and Middle Eastern fine art. More than an exhibit space it is an educational and communicational platform for artists, art lovers, collectors and students. It is also a place to exchange ideas and discussions, and to raise interest in art as a medium of expression. The gallery represents several well know names in the industry and is currently holding an exhibition for the well known artist Hadi Toron, among others. Toron’s work is very wide in subjects and is imprinted with three major subjects: the Syrian streets and villages, the Caribbean nature, and the Sudanese

mystics. Although the abstraction in his art reflects his past experiences, it also explores new unfamiliar territories of complicated visual representation. The gallery will also host a first exhibit in Syria of the Iranian artist: Farideh Lashai. Lashai is an internationally recognized artist and her works have been in recent art sales at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and others, it is also featured in several museum collections around the world such as the collections of Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Lashai’s work is calligraphic yet illegible, strong but tender at the same time.

Abou Watfa Est. Whether you are looking for a timeless classic watch or a new trendy accessory Abou Watfa is the place to go. With now 17 well known brand names that they carry you can find an array of different choices of watches and jewelry that reflect the finest in terms of quality and style. When asked about the business, the market and the many big brand names that Abou Watfa offers, here is what Mr. Bassam Abou Watfa had to say:

11

Who’s the person behind this famous name? And where does Abou Watfa stand now in the market? Rather than calling it a famous name or a business I’d rather say that the passion Abou Watfa family had for refined watches started in 1960 when my father founded Abou Watfa establishment. Back then the business had the exclusivity of a few brands in Syria. That same passion lived through an entire generation and it got reflected in me. In 1992, I decided to continue the legacy and build up on what my father had started. The company now represents more than 17 luxurious brands and it

operates through 6 different boutiques, these are located in: Four Seasons Hotel- Boulevard Damascus, Sheraton Hotel Damascus, Damasquino Mall (newly opened), a boutique in downtown Damascus, Sheraton Aleppo and Al Safir Hotel in Homs, and we’re currently opening a new showroom in Shahba Mall in Aleppo. In your opinion what makes Abou Watfa distinct from other similar stores? I would say the bouquet of legendary brands that we represent is what puts us on a different level from others. We are very selective in dealing with specific brands and our clients as well are people who love and value the watch-making industry and have a unique relationship with their watches. This common ground creates a great deal of harmony between us and the customer, and we know very well that it is this remarkable relationship that allows us to succeed. What are the most famous brands Abou Watfa carries? I believe all of the 17 brands that we have are extremely well known in the entire world, and each one possesses distinctive characteristics that appeal to different tastes and personalities. Why these brands? Who chooses the selections and what is your personal favorite item? During the year, we attend a number of important international fairs related to luxury business and it is through those exhibitions that we meet the leaders of many respected brands and commence talks about getting these dealerships into our local market. In choosing the collections to sell, I work with my experienced team and of course our primary consideration in the items would be the taste and the preference of our local customers. My personal favorite item? Well... I’m not sure I have one, but rather one from each brand, if not more.

12

Is there a Best seller? Does classical sells more than trendy? Every watch is a best seller in its own segment, some of the trendy watches are very popular amongst young men and women and other classic and complicated watches are admired by serious collectors. Personality and taste play a significant role too. How does Abou Watfa stay on top of the market? As I mentioned earlier, we have a very distinguished client base which in turn requires an extremely sophisticated treatment and care. After all our service should always be in perfect match with the prominent brands that we represent and I firmly believe that this is what positions us at a very much respected level. What can we expect in new arrivals for the coming season? This season we have a number of infamous brands joining Abou Watfa soon but I prefer to keep them as a surprise and announce them at a later stage. As about our latest, we just received Bertolucci watches; a brand with Mediterranean inspiration and Swiss craftsmanship, which has newly introduced a gorgeous summer collection line called Bella Costa, it comes in an array of colors, fresh and elegant, excellent for the modern man and woman. Miss France 2009 being the ambassador of this brand, she’s wearing this watch now and loving it. What’s the plan for the future? Where do you see Abou Watfa 5 or 10 years down the road? We’re planning and working not only on expanding our operation but bringing notorious brands in to Syria. Thanks to the efforts of our government the market is opening up to other markets and ultimately this is growing our economy. What we need to do then is move in parallel with that growth and provide the customers accessibility to international luxury shopping right here in Syria and with prices equal to the ones offered in European markets. We

Miss France 2009 wearing Bertolucci’s Bella Costa watch

want the people here in Syria to think Abou Watfa when they think renowned watches. So if you’re looking for a fine gift or simply want to indulge yourself in buying a fabulous watch or accessory you can trust to find it at Abou Watfa. More than a fine item or a simple purchase you can be sure to find the best service behind the sale that will make your experience more special with the Abou Watfa friendly and professional team.

interview

Yooshi

Yooshi is truly a fashionista’s heaven situated on The Boulevard’s second floor in the heart of the shopping mall. From the minute you walk in the friendly and highly trained staff is there to take care of all your fashion needs and give you some wise advice. Yooshi was born following a 13 year old girl’s dream that wanted to create a high end clothing store and eventually a major fashion label in Syria with the ambition of making it on the international scene and becoming a well known and respected brand in the fashion industry. When asked about the store, the fashion industry and the upcoming events here is what the owner and creator of Yooshi Mrs. Hala Kotrach had to say:

15

What does Yooshi represent today? The concept behind Yooshi was to have a fashion store with renowned brands in the international fashion industry available locally. This was a new concept in the Syrian market and it is part of Syria’s development and openness towards the world of fashion. It was very important to me to train the Syrian eye to recognize beauty and know what a fashion brand is all about. It also allowed Syrian women to find what they need right here at home and not have to go abroad to buy it. The selections we chose appeals to their taste and fashion style it also sits the style that women need. This is how Yooshi found its place in the Syrian market. What brands do you carry at this time, which are you favorites and are you planning on bringing other bands? I can’t point out one favorite brand; each one I chose has something special about it. One of the most important brands we carry is Marina Rinaldi, witch targets plus-sized women is a very stylish line, and has very reasonably priced, what’s special about it is that it has items for young women as

well as older women. Arab women, even when we are quite slender, are naturally curvaceous and Marina Rinaldi’s motto is (Style is not a size). This is something I truly believe In since it properly fits into today’s Syrian fashion market. We have Nara Camicie, the classic and elegant blouses that, when accessorized correctly, are perfect for any occasion, be it for a formal dinner with black pants or even with a pair of jeans for a more casual but elegant look. We also carry Clips, a classic high end conservative and simple fashion line that targets smaller cut woman. It is an elegant line that is picking up very well. And let’s not forget our shoe line that complements all our clothing lines, the famous Italian brand called ValleVerde, created so you feel like you’re walking on clouds. They are stylish yet medical shoes. This is the only line that we also carry for men, and men have really gone for the comfortable yet stylish line of shoes present in Yooshi. Now we are looking into importing the Giorgio Grati Italian line wich is very elegant in accordance with local taste and has very reasonable prices.

16

What can you tell us about the woman behind Yooshi? The idea came from my daughter when she was quite young. Aya has the passion and head for fashion design; and has a dream of puting Syrian fashion on the international scene. I wanted to make sure she had a reasonable opportunity when she returned to Syria. I love Syria and I’m very impressed with the development it went through in the last couple of years I’m also very proud to be part of the fashion development. Although I studie computer science, I have always been fascinated by the fashion world and the business behind it. I am on several boards i’am and very involved and impressed by working women who want to make a difference in their own countries. I am involved in all decisions made concerning the boutique, its development and all future plans needed to help Yooshi grow. I am all for creating a healthy competitive edge in order to make the Syrian fashion market stronger. Further more I am involved with local help as well as foreign designers that can put us on the international scene. What is in the future for Yooshi? We want to push the concept further and make Yooshi a Syrian brand name in the international fashion industry, not just a high end store. We are currently working with local designers and a very famous Italian designer that has created a collection of dresses especially for us under the Yooshi brand name. Indeed working with Fabio Menconi, a famous designer for people such as Sophia Lauren and many other celebrities, has given the Yooshi brand the opportunity to showcase its first collection this coming autumn. It is quite unique and I am very passionate about this new collection because

while it is designed by a famous name, it also stays faithful to the taste of Syrian women without compromising the design. We’re also working hard to create the Yooshi Jewelry line, where we hope to differentiate ourselves by using natural semi-precious stones with trendy designs in gold and other precious metals. We are hoping to showcase both the jewelry line and our new fashion collection together and make a huge contribution and have both a local and international impact.

This campaign lasted for three months including Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. The objective of the “show room” in Boulevard is to make easy for the people to see the car inside the city instead of taking the long way to Harasta show room, and they can get the basic information about the car by the staff members who are ready to answer all the questions people ask, with a possibility to give a test-card to the visitor to test the car at the show room. We received good feedback and positive responses by the people and so we wish to do this campaign again and may be trying something new

in the coming times to enhance Opel’s originality in the Syrian market” adds al-Zetani.
