The Northern C a lifo rn ia Running Review is published on a monthly b asis by the West V a lle y Track Club. I t is a communica tio n medium fo r a l l Northern C a lifo rn ia track & f i e ld ath letes and includes age group, high school, c o lle g ia t e , sen io r, AAU, and women's coverage. The NCRR is a v a ila b le at many road races and track meets throughout the area fo r 25 % an issu e, or fo r $ 3-50 per year by subscription (12 is s u e s ). A l l West V a lle y TC members receive th e ir copies by m ail i f th e ir dues are paid up. This paper's success depends on you, the readers, so please send us any pertinent information on the NorCal running scene that you would lik e to see in p r in t . We can always use good pho tos fo r our p u b lica tio n , p r e f e r a b l y black & w hite, and o f good co n trast. A l l information should be sent to the e d ito r: NorCal Running Review, P.O. Box 1551, San Mateo, CA 94401 (Ph- 415/3^23 l8 l). Be sure and give photo c r e d its , those competing, and the event being run. Any size p rin t w i l l do. Please do not send the n egative. We w i l l return a l l p rin ts afterw ards. NEW MAILING METHOD: Last month we experimented by m ailing a l l our issues third class and got p retty good r e s u lt s . Instead o f taking the en tire 500 to the post o ffic e at once, however, we scattered them about the c it y , dropping about 25 in each mailbox. I t seems that in th is way, they at le a s t leave San Mateo as f i r s t c lass m ail. A great number o f subscribers reported receivin g th e ir issues the day a ft e r they were mailed (a c t u a lly le s s than 24 h o u rs). Since we would sh o rtly go out of business i f we con tinued to m ail many o f our issues f i r s t c la s s , we w i l l continue to mail everything th ird c la s s in the fu tu re . Some c it ie s have very poor mail service ( i . e . - Fremont fo r one) and so i t may take a l i t t l e longer, but in no case should you have to w ait fo r more than 10 days i f you liv e in C a lifo r n ia . I f so, please le t us know and maybe we can remedy the s itu a tio n . Subscribers w i l l also note the new method o f noting exp ira tio n dates on your ad dress la b e ls (a ft e r your name on the f i r s t l i n e ) . The number in dicates the la s t issue that you w i l l receive before your su bscrip tion e x p ir e s . I f your number is 39, then issue #39 w i l l be your la s t ...y o u w i l l autom atically get a renewal notice with that i s sue. Everyone w i l l get 12 issues per year (12 m a ilin g s ), regard le ss o f whether one or more "double issu es" are m ailed. In desperation before the Tahoe Relay, I rushed over to Montgomery Ward's in Oakland at the suggestion of Dave Stock, and purchased 24 nylon t r ic o t jerseys f o r h a lf the p rice ($ 2.00 ea c h ). I started s ilk -s c re e n in g them the night before I l e f t fo r Tahoe but re a lize d too la te that they would not dry in time to take. A l a s . . . I '11 fin is h them th is week sometime (and hopefu lly the other ones I o r d e r e d . ..i f they happen to come i n ) . For those of you that have paid $4.00 already fo r your je rs e y , you can do one o f the fo llo w in g : ( l ) Wait u n t il the nylon mesh jerseys come in (th ey are $4.00) and I ' l l m ail them to you, or ( 2 ) le t me know i f you want the cheaper kind and I ' l l m ail you that kind and c re d it your 1973 club dues with the other $2.00. I f y ou 're not sure, I ' l l have them at the next road race f o r you to check them out. Duncan Macdonald & Don Kardong are hopping about Europe, rac in g, boozing, and doing a l l kinds o f other fa r-o u t th in g s. I f you care to w rite them and give them some cheer (not the kind you wash your clothes w it h ), th e y 're m ailing address i s : c/o Ramsay Thomas & Denny P h i lli p s , l 6 G rottenstrasse, 2 Hamburg 52, West Germany. T h at's probably good u n t il they leave...w henever that may be. Figure at le a s t u n t il mid-September, probably into Octo ber fo r Dunc . In c id e n ta lly , Don ran a 29:03.8 at the Pre-Olympic Meet in Oslo (f o r 10,000), fin is h in g 3rd behind V ire n 's w orldleading 27:52.4. Dunc did a 3:42.7 fo r 1500 in the same meet and fin ish e d 4th in his section w ith a time that would have tied Howe f o r 5th in the other sectio n . Jim Dare, a lso tra v e lin g and run ning in Europe, fin ish ed 6th ( I think, judging from the TV cover age today) in a 2000 meter event at V ia regg io , I t a ly . He took the lead with about a lap and a h a lf remaining and held i t u n til 200 meters to go when he was out kicked. His time was probably around 5:09-5:10. Bob Crow is on h is way home from Europe and w i l l return v ia LA, coming to the Bay Area around the 25th . Wayne Glusker is a lso making the tour of the continent fo r WVTC. S p ecial Discount to WVTC Members !! - Sports Illu s t r a t e d has come up with a Decathlon Game that seems to be very r e a li s t i c and challenging to p la y . Mr. Richard Cohen, Research D irector fo r S I , has offered a s p e c ia l discount to our club members as fo llo w s : The DECATHLON GAME, which s e l l s fo r $10.00, is being offered at the s p e c ia l price of $7-95. I f you 're in terested , and want i t mailed to you in d iv id u a lly , add 50% to th a t; otherwise, w rite me at our P.O. Box and I can have i t sent through me in quantities o f 6 or more. Make a l l checks payable to Sports Illu s t r a t e d Games, Box 1065 , Darien, Conn. 06820 (A ttn : Mr. Richard Cohen). I f you m ail your request d irec t to Mr. Cohen, be sure and mention that you are a WVTC member. The Colombian sector o f our club (M ejia, Mora, Barreneche, & T ibadu iza) is now staying at Lake Tahoe fo r high a ltitu d e tra in in g before Munich. Their m ailing address is c/o General D e livery , So. Lake Tahoe, CA 95709 ( li v i n g at 3253 M arlette C ir c le , but mail addressed there w i l l not get d e liv e r e d ). They w i l l be there thru the end o f August to take advantage o f the high a lt i t u d e . A l l ex cept Tibaduiza w i l l run the marathon (T iba w i l l go i t in the 10 k ilo m e te rs). — Speaking o f WVTC's Olympians, Esteban V a lle , our s ta r race w alker, has received o f f i c i a l word from the Nicaraguan Government that he w i l l represent that country in Munich at both the 20 and 50 kilom eter distan ces. Lots o f luck and best wishes f o r success to a l l fiv e of our Olympians !! Other b it s o f news from around the corner, under the bush, e t c . — John Marconi is in Lake Tahoe, staying with the M e jia 's , as is Rich Delgado, who is g e ttin g in some high a ltitu d e tra in in g in preparation fo r the Dipsea. - - B i l l Scobey is .back at i t again, looking forward to a good cross country season and hoping to move to the Bay Area. I f in terested , le t me know. Considering a good number of our Exec Council members were out o f town, we had a r e a lly heart-warming turnout on our August 6 g e ttogether at my place. In attendance were Len Wallach (San Mateo Recreation D e p t.) and Rich Perry (Belmont Rec. D e p t .). Len is a member and Exec Council member, and Rich sat in as an interested party. The winners o f the past two years w i l l have t h e ir names and point t o t a ls engraved on the trophies as w e ll. For the u n in itia te d , here is b a s ic a lly how our point system works. I t is based on not only the number o f races run, but a ls o on average p la cin g . To fig u re out your own t o t a l , merely take your average placing and divide i t by the number o f races run. As an example, i f you placed 5th, 6th, and 7 th in three rac es, your average place would be 6th . Divide th is by 3 (number of races run) to get your point ra tin g o f 2 .0 . Anyone can keep track o f t h e ir scores, and we encourage those lis t e d below to keep tabs on us and send in your records at the end of the year i f they d i f f e r from ours. We added a few other ru les to our system: ( a ) Races must be attended by a reasonable number o f ath letes (to be determined by the e d ito r at th is point in time...maybe using some other method l a t e r ) , and must be PA-AAU sanctioned events, or at le a s t take place in the PA-AAU with su b stan tia l numbers o f p a rtic ip a n ts ; ( b ) we only count fin is h e rs in the top 10 (open) and top s ix (s e n io r ) fo r our ra n k in g s...y o u need not be lim ited to th is in fig u r in g your own personal t o t a ls . I f a lis t e d runner fin ish ed out of the top ten (o r top 6 fo r s e n io rs) in a given race, th is i s n 't counted against him; ( c ) a l l ath letes re s id in g in the PA-AAU are e l i g i b le , whether reg istered in the A ssociation or not ( e . g . - Ray Darwin, John Anderson), as w e ll as PA ath letes re s id in g outside the A ssociation ( e . g . - B i l l Scobey); (d ) in meets where two races are held (o r more), the main event s h a ll count fo r open competition and two races may be counted fo r senior competition ( e . g . - Lake M e rritt, Monterey, e t c . ) . The scoring year sta rts with the Lake M erritt Races on Columbus Day. Below are lis t e d the top 15 open competitors and top 9 s e n io rs. Handicap races are counted, but order of f i n ish is not used. Instead, fa st-tim e is used in determining the point r a t in g s . In case of t i e s , the placing is fig u re d as an average. I f 2 in d iv id u als tied fo r 4th place, then 4.5 would be used as the fin is h p la c in g . Below, t ie s (2-w ay) are indicated by an a s te risk ( * ) , and 3-way t ie s are indicated by a degree sign ( ° ) . We are always interested in hearing comments from our readers on how we might improve our system...maybe taking into consideration the number o f competitors, q u a lity o f f i e l d , length o f race?? Send us your ideas. Maybe in the coming year we can devise an equation based on a l l (and more) o f these fa cto rs and feed i t to a computer to get standings. For the month of August, we are complete with open and senior standings through the Martinez 7 M iler with the exception of the Felton and Lafayette Runs. Anyone having p a r t ia l or complete re s u lts fo r these r a c e s ...p le a s e send them to us. Jack Leydig firmed his hold on the open d iv is io n , lengthening his lead over D arryl B eard a ll and Dan Anderson, h is only serious competitors. With the exception of Pat Stordahl moving onto the l i s t fo r the f i r s t time, there were very few changes. Wayne Badgley had a bad race at Tiburon and th is hurt h is point t o t a l quite a b i t . In the hot senior race, Ross Smith d id n 't compete but s t i l l maintains a siz e a b le lead over Dave Stevenson, Jim O 'N e il and Bob Malain, who are fig h tin g i t out fo r the second spot. G il Tarin ju st missed the l i s t with his 0.313. Very few changes in p o sitio n , but Paul Reese c e rta in ly i s n 't acting lik e h e 's 55 years old with a firm hold on sixth spot and closin g in on Jim Nicholson fo r f i f t h . SPECIAL ARTICLE "Oldest Female Marathoner Sets New Senior Record"— Marcie Trent, 54y ear-o ld Anchorage, Alaska, marathoner and mother o f f i v e , recen tly completed the Culver C ity Marathon (her fa v o r it e ) in a remarkable 3 hours, 43 minutes, and 37 seconds. To the best o f the author's knowledge, th is is not only a record in the 50 to 60 d iv is io n , but also one in the 40-and-over c la s s . Marcie started running in June of 1968 . An example o f her gradual entry into long distance running is the fo llo w in g : "Mileage fo r 6 months in 1968— 1 mile per day fo r a t o t a l of 1941 1969—2 miles per day fo r a t o t a l of 7 3 7 ; 1970--4 miles per day fo r a t o t a l o f 1358 ." Her husband, John, is the Coor dinator o f the famous P u lsators Running Club in Anchorage. Just a short while ago, Eva Barraza ran a 3:43:59 in the Golden Gate Marathon, a new female senior record at that time. Marcie beat th is record by 18 seconds. This was E va's f i r s t marathon. No other women over 40 have run under 4 hours to the best o f my knowledge. Katherine Heard, age 58 in 1959, came in f i r s t in the Pikes Peak Marathon in 5:17:52, and ran some 4 times through 1963 in that race, being second and th ird in the woman's d i v i sio n . Katherine is now 71 and walks Pikes Peak at le a s t once a year. She dispenses oranges to the marathoners at the "C irq u e", one mile from the sum mit o f Pikes Peak. Mary Boitano, mother o f fi v e , had her 49th birth day r e cen tly and celebrated w ith a huge birth day cake fo llo w in g her l4th marathon in the Redwood Empire Marathon in Arca ta . Mary has only been running three years and has competed at Pikes Peak and a l l the lo c a l marathons. She is the mother of the 1971 Dipsea Champion, Mike (10) and Maryetta ( 9 ) , who hold world age group marathon records at sev era l le v e ls . Isa V a r e lla , mother o f s ix , and 4 7 -y ears-o ld , ran her f i r s t marathon at Culver C ity th is past June (the same one Marcie r a n ), but did not crack the four-hour b a r r i e r . She ran a 300 mile re la y from Hollywood to Las Vegas a couple o f years ago with a bunch of ancient marathoners (over 60 ) . She is planning on running Pikes Peak th is year. Annabelle Marsh, 48, ran the Golden Gate Marathon a year ago w ith le ss than a year of running. She saw the runners coming into the fin is h and asked, "What's going on?" When i t was explained to her that i t was a 26 mile race, she s a id , "I'm going to run i t next y e a r," and she d id . She plans to c e le brate her 49th birthday by running i t again. Francis Morrison, another 40-year-old from Houston, Texas, ran Boston th is year but d id n 't make i t under 4 hours. Annette Mallebeu, yet another senior woman marathoner, ran the P lo d d er's Marathon in 1971 in 4:17:48. Her uncle won the Boston Marathon many years ago. Active female marathoners over 40 are ra re r than a tru th fu l statement from the Pentagon. Strangely, a l l the runners in t h e ir 30's , men and women, c a n 't w ait u n t il they become 4o...sam e with the 40's and 5 0 's. Everyone is anxious to run in an older d iv is io n . Many happy returns to a l l the female "se n io r" marathoners. —Walt Stack

RELAY TO THE OLYMPIC TRIALS: "SO WHERE'S THE BRASS BAND?" I f I may be permitted to climb on the bandwagon o f running a llu sio n s in lit e r a t u r e fo r a moment, I would lik e to borrow Andrew M a rv e ll's lin e from "To His Coy M is tre ss ": "Though we cannot make our sun stand s t i l l , we w i l l make him ru n ." Beneath the lo f t y language the speaker was making ye olde pitch to a f a i r e maide to "se iz e the day," to s a t is fy her/his sexual d e s ire s . I,o n the other hand, am using the image more l i t e r a l l y ; I would lik e to use i t to a s s is t in describing our recent r e la y to the Olympic T r ia ls in Eugene. While spectating and ph ilosophizing around the sid e lin e s o f an all-com ers meet, Gerry Haslam ("Running Through L it e r a t u r e ", RW, July 1972) and I sagely agreed that there was "no way one could a c tu a lly pred ict or prepare fo r a long, hot, ru n ." Not that one co u ld n 't say, fo r instance th a t, "W e ll, i t ' l l be about 80 degrees at ten a.m ., humidity about 40%, and 90 to 100 degrees in the a f t e r noon and so on. But the concrete, we concluded, the r e a l th in g, is such a fa r cry from whatever one surmise, that to attempt to comprehend the actual e ffe c t s of running th re e -a n d -a -h a lf days in the extreme heat, from Napa, C a lifo rn ia to Eugene, Oregon, fo r the opening o f the Olympic T r i a ls , would be akin to the d ifferen ce between looking at a picture o f a v ast, e te rn a l, d esert, and being suddenly thrust into one— lik e the d ifferen ce between watching "Night G a llery " and being one of the subjects in the p ic tu re s. Yet, thus were we, a handful of runners from the Napa Runners, and a s im ila r ly sized group from the High S ie rra Track Club, thrust into the p ic tu re . And we had prepared, too; had a l l our " s t u f f " together. Purpose: to c a l l atten tion to the Olympic T r ia ls in Eugene, and to c o lle c t donations along the way from Napa to Eugene v ia Kiwanis Clubs on the rou te. O rganization: the K iwanis and a state assemblyman wheedled and dealed somebody and got us clearance from the C a lifo rn ia Highway P a tro l ( ! ) to run on highways and freeways (in t e r state 5 ) . In Oregon we discovered that i t is le g a l to run on freeways, so long as "you keep moving and go about your b u sin ess." Oregon, Runner's Heaven: We even had a t e le v is io n sta tio n covering the f i r s t se v e ra l " le g s " . Enthusiasm: a half-dozen "su p e r-s ta r" runners from the Bay Area gave us a b ig send off by running a good deal o f the distance on the f i r s t day: Darren George, Jack Ley d ig, Gerry Haslam, John B u t t e r fie ld , Jim O 'N e il, Chaplain Joe Shay, Ed Healy clicked o f f over s ix ty hot miles through Woodland—where we met the High S ie rra runners-and combined with them fo r the re s t of the way. High S ie r r a , made up o f Dave Bronzan (who had q u a lifie d fo r the T r i a l s ' Marathon), B i l l Cockerham, Donna Cockerham, Don Gregory, Rich Peterson, Steve Ward, and an itin eran t run ner that joined them somewhere in Oregon, (could he have b a ile d out o f an a i r lin e r , carrying a p is t o l and a pouch?), were road-w ise, a ft e r having run up

from Fresno the Saturday b e fo re , and they were apparently relie v ed to see us at rendevous time. The Napa "re g u la rs " were m yself, Mike Healy, Mark Proteau, Ray Miranda, Bev Healy, and th irte e n -y e a r-o ld Michael Healy. The P la n : to combine with the group from Fresno and fo llo w a schedule through c it ie s on the route at between a s ix to s ix -t h ir t y per mile pace, to cover between one-hundred and onehundred and s ix ty miles per day between 4:30 am and 9:30 pm, to a rriv e at Hayward F ie ld in Eugene at the opening o f the fir s t - n ig h t ceremonies amidst drum r u f f le s and flo u r is h e s , and to present the Olympic Committee with our baton stu ffed with checks and notes that we had c o lle c te d . And maybe get in fr e e , too. We had been promised a reception ; we had been p rac tic in g our humble/heroic track side manners. Although the intense heat on the f i r s t day had us "Transpiring at every pore w ith instant f i r e s " ("Coy M is t r e s s "), and Haslam, who ran sev era l " le g s " that day, and I had had our prophecy f u l f i l l e d , the r e la y was proceeding w e ll and the run ners appeared to be lig h t o f heart and fo o t. Jim O 'N e il clicked o f f a s tra ig h t, fa s t , seventeen miles over blacktop and one-hundred-degree heat. The Fresno team had been pleased to see us and quickly agreed not to run as separate teams: the previous two days on the road, a searing "baptism by f i r e , " had made them w ise. Yet beneath the general ligh theartedn ess, one could detect a c e rta in stra in in g in the re la tio n sh ip s among the runners we had met. One of them put i t simply and e l oquently when he tossed o f f , "W e're beginning to notice l i t t l e th in g s ." As he said th is his eyes pinched s li g h t ly and he looked beyond me down thehot macadam ro a d . His statement recurred to me that evening as we bedded down fo r the night on the bank o f the Feather R iver, a tin y , rev erberatin g, motif that meandered through my thoughts fo r the re s t of the run. Our turn came on the second day at fo u r -t h ir t y a.m. Five-m ile le g s , drive ahead, h an d -off, work up your best form fo r going through towns and receiving checks from lo c a l beauty queens, exchange baton, fiv e -m ile le g s , six-minute pace, heat r i s i n g . Passing through G rid ley, B iggs, Los Molinos, Chico, gathering funds to support the floundering finances o f an Olympic team that pays trib u te to M oral i t y and Amateurism. Chased o f f the freeway twice on f i r s t day by uninformed CHP, over the cyclone fence into the h i l l s , heat r is in g , beginning to notice " l i t t l e th in g s ." Switch to two-mile le g s : one-hundred and fiv e degrees, then one-hundred and seven degrees between Red B lu ff and Redding, noxious fumes from speeding d ie s e l trucks, kicked o f f again, over the fence and into the h i l l s again. Heat r is in g , " l i t t l e things" cropping up. Time's winged chariot hurried near. Somehow, on th e ir midday le g , between Red B lu ff and Redding, the Fresno run ners held together on an overwhelmingly hot and circu itou s route (a f t e r again being ousted from the freeway by the CHP) and brought the baton to the Holiday Inn in Redding, where we Napa runners had inveigled a dip in t h e ir p o o l. I t was here that I think we experienced the "turning point" in our r e la y and most f u l l y re a lize d the concrete r e a li t y o f our s itu a tio n ; in an old track fan expression, "the bear was on our backs." We were beginning to be sen sitive in the extreme; we were beginning to doubt the value o f our e f f o r t s ; sometimes, I wondered i f we would even survive ("The g ra v e 's a fin e and p riv ate p la ce , but none, I think, do there em brace.") We went on. Or rath e r, we went up: the next day involved, by v a riatio n s of long ups and short downs, climbing to 4000 fe e t e le v a tio n . That we had begun to notice l i t t l e things can be quickly i llu s t r a t e d . On a hot, f l a t stretch on a country road, the current runner approaches the truck, where a cup of water is o ffered him: "How about a drink?", to which he sp its back, "Get out of my way, you son-o f-a-b it c h ! " And when someone d rivin g along side the current runner says jo k in gly , "Only three miles to go, heh, heh," he r e p lie s , "Don't b . s . me you damn i d i o t ! " Or the ultimate sen s i t i v i t y : "How ya fe e lin g ? " The r e p ly : "What the h e ll do you mean by that?" But with the a ltitu d e came the cooling r e l i e f of mountain a i r and the p a r a lle l dropping of anxiety and tempers. One more day to go; we were close to schedule. On the b e a u tifu l Oregon Freeway with le ss than one-hundred miles to go we were a cinch to make i t -- o n time, too. We made i t with an hour to spare. I t was ju st fiv e p.m. as the teams trotted together up to Hayward F ie ld . We wondered where the brass band was, and the reception committee? What there was was a throng o f track fans and concessionaires m igrating determinedly through the s t r e e t s . This was a somewhat le ss auspicious welcome than we had planned on. Why w eren't the Olympic o f f i c i a l s and ath letes queueing up a l l around? We were t o t a lly dejected. We began to babble: "Hold the money! 700 miles and nothing, z e r o !...W h a t 's the d e al, an yw ay?...Let's storm the g a te !" Obviously, the thought had escaped us that the o f f i c i a l s and ath letes might have some passing in tere st in ge ttin g the track meet under way, and that they may not be t e r r i b l y impressed by a band o f ragtag r e la y runners m illin g in the crowd on Agate S tre e t. For a l l the good our shouting o f u n c iv il epith ets did us, we might as w e ll have been s e llin g ice cream bars and popcorn. We were stopped cold at every g a te . The gatekeepers turned out to be a h igh ly trained corp of psychologists and karate exp erts: nobody could shake t h e ir grip s on the almighty t u r n s t ile s . Then we trie d a l i t t l e ploy. We sent a representative over to the A th le te s' Headquarters across the s tr e e t , told him to look fo r an AAU or Olympic Committee O f f i c i a l . "S lid e up to him," we s a id , "look mysterious, whisper into his e a r: 'W e're here, we have over a thousand d o lla rs that we raised on our r e la y run to E ugen e.'" "Then ju st disappear into the crowd," we s a id . Our man went o f f toward the HQ and reap peared w ithin the hour, s t i l l looking mysterious. He had made contact. True to form, w ithin a couple o f hours, several white-capped AAU o f f i c i a l s smiled t h e ir way into our ragged ranks, murmuring, "Over a thousand d o lla r s , you s a y .. . Meet Ken Duncan: Ken Duncan always wanted to be a s p rin te r. Jerry Proctor, fo r one, probably wishes he was. Instead o f pursuing the dashes— despite 9-7 speed—Duncan concentrated on the long jump. That concentration reached it s high est— and longest— point at the p restigiou s Golden West Prep Meet on June 17 in Sacramento when Duncan powered o f f the board and landed 26'2 l/4 " away to set a na t io n a l high school record, erasin g P ro c to r's 1967 mark o f 26*0 3/4". The 6-3, 1 7 0 -lb. leader from Sacramento's McClatchy Highp r viewed his b ig jump with a mighty 26-8 fo u l on his f i r s t leap o f the day. Duncan's record served to catapult him into n ational prominence as w e ll as the prep record book. E a r lie r in June he was beaten fo r the C a lifo rn ia prep t i t l e by Sacramento H igh's v e r s a t ile C a rl McCullough. Then Ken placed third in the In tern ation al Prep Meet in I l l i n o i s , jumping 23-10 3/4, but c lo sin g in on McCullough (23-11 l / 2 ). Then Duncan delivered his crusher at the GWI. Following that he placed th ird in the U .S . Junior Championships ( 2 5 - l ) , but earned a place on the US Junior (under 20) Team to meet the USSR Juniors since the runner-up was a non-American. Duncan h it the b ig time by jumping in the US F in a l Olympic T r i a ls , missing q u a lify in g fo r the fin a ls by a place and one inch (24 -2 l/2 to James M c A liste r's 24-10 l / 2 ). S t i l l , Ken topped such well-known 26 -footers as P h il Shinnick, J e ff B olin , A1 Lanier, Bouncy Moore, Stan Royster, and P rocto r. Duncan returned to the scene of his prep record, Sacramento's Hughes Stadium, and placed a c re d ita b le th ird In the US-USSR Junior match at a windy 25-2 3/4 behind the high-powered jumps o f US O pian Randy W illiam s (26-9 l/ 4 ) and '70 European Junior long and t r ip le jump champ, V a le riy Podluzhniy (26-7 3/4). A phenominal season fo r a jumper whose previous seasonal best was 22-11 in *1971. " I think my good year was due to ju st good o l* hard work," says the v e r s a t ile l 8 -y e a r -o ld . Besides the long jump, Duncan recorded such marks in '72 as 14.0 fo r the prep hurdles, l4 -6 fo r the pole v a u lt, and 48.0 fo r a r e la y 440. Duncan a lso runs cross country, u su a lly as a part of f a l l t ra in in g , before con centrating on speed and jump work in the sprin g. As fa r ab\style goes, he told Track & F ie ld News, "Some jumpers use a hitch kick, but I ju st flo a t lik e a b i r d ." Duncan indicated in 1972 he has only begun to spread his wings and f l y . WEST VALLEY PORTRAIT Meet Peter D u ffy : The past track season has been sort o f a "turning point" fo r WVTC's Englishman from Reno. Peter D uffy had always been a "good" performer in a v a rie ty o f distance events, but could never quite get the combination together to become n ation al c la s s . A fte r running a li f e - b e s t mile o f 4:03.8 (h is previous best had been 4:08) against P a c ific Coast Club th is A p r il, his confidence grew, and as a r e s u lt , h is times came down, in great le ap s. He improved his two-mile best from an 8:48 to a c la s sy 8:35.8, and his three mile from 13:48 to 13:28 (and 13:55.8 fo r 5000m). In the s ix m ile, a race he had seldom run, Peter proceeded to run away from a very c la s sy f i e ld at the San Jose In v it a t io n a l, recording a PR o f 2$:04.2 fo r the metric distance and a 28:08 in route at s ix m iles. In the process, he defeated the lik e s o f Don Kardong, Jon Anderson, B i l l C lark, Greg Brock and Mike H a z illa among others. He closed the season with three s t e r lin g performances (8:35 .8 fo r 2 miles and a 5th place at the C a lifo rn ia Relays, beating the lik e s of such in t e r n a tio n a lists as Gerry Lindgren and Tom L a r is ; 29:08.8 fo r 10,000 meters and a 5th in the NCAA Championships; and f i n a l l y 13:55.8 fo r 5000 meters and a close th ird in the AAU M eet). A l l th is came with a knee in ju ry that forced him to lim it his workouts to only 3-4 miles (3 times a day) over the la s t month o f the season. With the knee healed, Peter is ready to run a strong cross country sea son and then attempt in tern ation al c lass times next track season ( he hopes fo r 4 minutes in the mile and around 8:20 fo r two m ile s ). Born in Manchester, England, the 2 3 -year-old Duffy has been in the States fo r quite some time now, enough, in fa c t , to earn him s e l f a degree in S ocial Psychology from the U n iversity of Nevada at Reno. There he liv e s with his w ife E lain e , and is cu rren tly em ployed part time with United A ir lin e s . He seems to have taken a lik in g to the h ig h -a ltitu d e tra in in g conditions in Reno, as his cur rent improvement has shown. Looking back over his running career, Peter sin gle s out two moments that he considers his "most e x c itin g ", although he emphasizes, " I don't u su a lly get very excited about rac es. I'm in i t p rim arily fo r the enjoyment, and not n e ce ssarily the winning." His f i r s t b ig win as a junior came in 1966 when he fin ish ed third in the E nglish Schools' Mile in a time o f 4:22. He con sid ers his competing in the AAU cross country championships la s t f a l l to be another o f his "e x c itin g moments". He fin ish ed 30th in that race, and fig u re s to improve considerably th is year in Chicago as his track improvement seems to d ic ta te . The blond Englishman's tra in in g schedule is more or le ss "common sense", as he puts i t . He f i t s h is tra in in g together into a pattern that seems to su it him at the time. Normally he lik e s to go fo r 9 miles o f easy running in the mornings, followed by 6 miles in the afternoon at a quick c lip ( 5:20 per mile pace or thereabouts) or in te rv a l work, e s p e c ia lly as the season's b ig meets come around. This year he ran a race almost every week (u s u a lly more) fo r the U n iv e rsity of Nevada, but he'd much p re fe r aiming at about fiv e or s ix important races next track season of his. own choosing. This way h e ' l l be able to concentrate more on consistent train in g in the attainment o f his lo f t y g o a ls . With 1972 almost behind him (a t le a s t track season), Duffy has "come o f age", and the future looks very b righ t indeed fo r his emergence onto the in tern ation al scene. A l l his team mates wish him success in these endeavors.

VICTOR MORA "KEEPS ON TRUCKIN'* AT TIBUR0N (J u ly 22, Tiburon) - Colombian V ic to r Mora is going to be a hard man to beat at the Olympic Games marathon. A fte r running in a pack composed of Hale, T ibaduiza, and M ejia fo r about h a lf the 8.5 mile course, he took o f f and l e f t a l l opposition fa r behind. Tom, Hale, him self a 28:20 s ix -m ile r , wound up almost a minute behind Mora's 41:20, which tied B i l l C la rk 's 1971 record, except the course went clockwise around the peninsula th is year over a s li g h t ly d iffe r e n t route at the beginning and end. Jim O 'N e il was an easy winner in the senior d iv isio n (40th, 4 9 :1 0 )...we don't know who was next as we've only got the top 50 at press time. Jack B ellah was the f i r s t high schooler by almost a f u l l minute over Angelo Martinez, as he fin ish ed eighth o v e r a ll. Fran Conley was the f i r s t woman to cross the lin e , but we don't have her place or time fo r th is issu e. West V a lle y TC won the team t i t l e again, placing four o f its scorers in the top 8 p la ce s. The race was run under sunny but cool conditions as th is was probably the fa s t e s t m ass-finish in the h is to ry o f the race. Last y e a r's champ, B i l l C lark, could only manage a f i f t h today, but no doubt was s t i l l fe e lin g a b it tire d from the Olympic T r ia ls Marathon of two weeks before in which he placed 11th. The top 50 are on the next page. /Reported by Darren Walton/

TOM HALE SMASHES OCEAN-TO-BAY MARATHON RECORD

(August 5, Martins Beach to Marine W orld) - Running his f i r s t marathon race (lo n ge st previous race was the 15 mile F t. Baker Race in 1971), M o r a g a Tom Hale, headed fo r the U n iversity o f Oregon, where h e ' l l be a soph, chopped more than fiv e minutes from B i l l C la r k 's 1970 course record. The s ta r t and fin is h were s li g h t ly altered so that the fin is h was down the s tre e t from Marine World. H ale 's winning time o f 2:27:58.8 was more than a mile ahead of second-placer John Weidinger who clocked 2:35:35. J e ff Arnold, who w i l l be a high school senior next f a l l , was a surprise th ird place fin is h e r in a hot 2:36:26. Matt Yeo, fourth o v e r a ll, was the s e cond ju n io r to cross the l i n e . In the over-40 category, Stanford RC's s te a d ily improving Dave Stevenson nipped Paul Reese (h is 3rd marathon in a month) and clocked the only senior sub-three hour e f f o r t of the day at 2:59:29. Amazing Fran Conley showed that she is to be recognized at the longer distances as w e ll as the short ones as she clocked a s c i n t i lla t i n g 3:24:13 over the rugged course which climbs 2000 fe e t in the f i r s t 8-10 m iles. That was good enough fo r 38th place out o f 88 fin is h e rs (103 s t a r t e d ). Wal t Stack, 64, was oldest to fin is h in another sub-four hour e f f o r t fo r him -- 3 : 56 : 39 - - - r e a l l y ge ttin g con sisten t. Tommy Owen and Mary Crevelt were the youngest to fin is h at 9 years (Tommy was 73rd in 4:14:42 and Mary got 80th in 4 :5 7 :1 0 ). The Redwood C ity S trid e rs ju st b a re ly got the team trophy in a hot contest with West V a lle y TC. The S trid e rs had 17 points to WVTC's 21. Then came Stanford RC with 25, NorCal Seniors with 27, and San Diego TC with 30. Donna Gookin helped to make up the San Diego team w ith her 3:43:26 in 55th p la ce .
