Non-Plan: Bir Özgürlük Deneyi
Three years before Learning from Las Vegas was published, an audacious argument was put forth in the British magazine New Society by four men (historian Reyner Banham, architect Cedric Price, geographer Peter Hall, and Paul Barker, the magazine’s editor). Contrary to the aesthetic moralism and tacit elitism of contemporary urban theorists, they suggested that the suburbs of Britain represented popular sites of community engagement, rather than blighted patterns of development. In these lowdensity neighborhoods, they observed a high degree of personalization of the living environment, including garden decorations, door typologies, and repurposed garages. Critically, this controversial perspective coincided with the wholesale demolition of terraced housing in anticipation of “modernist” tower blocks, which today are much maligned for their perceived fostering of social ills. Non-Plan was an effort “to see the world as it was, and not how it was supposed to be.”
